As an organist and singer, this is absolutely my favorite church anthem.
That last chord. The soprano E-flat floating on top like the first star you see on a soft summer evening. Sublime.
This has to be one of the most perfect pairings of ensemble and composition ever. To watch them is a treasure. They're constantly listening to each other and singing with their entire body. Seemingly effortlessly but you know there's a lot of hard work behind that. They use the accoustic of the room, and as a tip to anyone, look closely and you'll notice that they're fully into the piece and anticipating every entrance a few notes before. When they have a couple measures off they don't lose energy, Never in a hurry, always on point, always singing on top of the notes just as they should be. This piece is all about overlapping lines with the various parts coming and going. VOCES8 has mastered the art of sliding in so inconspicuously that the listener barely notices another line has joined. Thank, people, is difficult and shows how well they know each other. Plus, they really truly seem to enjoy singing together,. It doesn''t hurt that Stanford was clearly in a very happy place when he composed this anthem. Amazing job!
AGREED !!! I couldn't have expressed it better. A stunningly sensitive interpretation one usually expects to hear performed by a larger group. Bravo, Voces8.
Jim Roberts - a superb description of good choral technique! I’ve sung all my life, and really love unaccompanied voices, and being in a good choir and singing Tallis or Palestrina is heavenly. I did sing Dvorak’s Requiem in Prague, with the National Orchestra, which was thrilling, but, as I age, I prefer these beautiful pieces (such as O Magnum Mysterium). Disappearing into the blend is transporting. At 70, I don’t have the voice any more, but I can appreciate this perfectly balanced group. Absolutely gorgeous!
Good on you too Jim! Loved hearing Voces 8 at Ukaria. I go to major choral concerts when they come to South Australia. I Fagiolini was fun but Voces 8 stopped me in my tracks. I love all the educational work they do too.
The top soprano / treble has a voice of honey
The final chord here is extremely moving and uplifting.
I have been searching for this song for years!!! My university choir sang this and it always brought tears to my eyes. It's been 30 years and I have never forgotten how much it gave me chills. Admittedly, this group did far more justice than we did!
I sang this song with my junior college choir in 1993!
Boldog, akinek útja szeplőtelen, aki az Úr törvénye szerint él.
Boldog, aki követi útmutatásait, s aki egész szívével keresi őt.
(Zsolt 119, 1-2)
Had the unique opportunity to hear this incredible ensemble today in Grass Valley, California. If you appreciate unaccompanied vocal music, you will love hearing this ensemble live. They are a pure joy in concert, and those of us who were in attendance today left with warmed hearts and broad smiles, acutely aware of the rare musical gift we’d received. Peace.
I can't get enough of those two tenors, they're amazing.
I spent a few years touring and recording with a brass ensemble in the 1980s. In workshops, when we tried to explain what we were trying to achieve regarding balance, blend, intonation, style, ensemble, interpretation...it would have been so nice just to be able to point to VOCES8 as a shining example. What an absolute treat to hear!
How Blessed are we now in this modern world that YOU TUBE allows us to see and hear these incredible masterpieces
The stillness that lingers after the glorious sounds is magnificent
. One of the most beautiful compositions ever ever written. Lovely.
Some quite extraordinary control of breathing, timbre and intonation here; the timing is fabulous. Beautiful.
La nature humaine est capable du meilleur comme du pire, dans ce cas, nous sommes dans le meilleur.
Soprano. Wow! Voice like a bell. Incredible.
Voces8 is one of the finest choral ensembles in the world. Incredible voices producing glorious music. Thank you.
This is really beautiful. I am often amazed at how much high quality English music is ignored and unknown. High quality music really well performed. I shall certainly be listening to more from VOCES8.
Stanford was not English, he was Irish, which should be obvious by the titles of many of his pieces. I'm often amazed at how much high quality Irish music is mistakenly labelled as English!
Fabulously tranquil expressions. What a delight to watch and listen to.
LOVE HEARING VOCES8 and the Choral Selections of the Baroque (my favorites) and I so Miss blending my own voice in harmony (I was born singing harmony!) as my own voice is pretty much gone these days being an Octogenarian...and something I LOVED doing over the years...especially with a good group of singers...sighs
Suzanne LeBizarre you do though, appreciate and love this glorious music ♥️🇨🇦
My favourite chord progression of all time: the B flat minor 7/9 to E flat to A flat. Simply the most beautiful choral music.
Astonishing! Thank you.
The blend and tone quality is mind-bogglingly perfect...just PERFECT!
Perfect.
Psalm 119:1
Beati quorum via integra est,
qui ambulant in lege Domini.
Blessed are the undefiled in the way,
who walk in the law of the Lord.
Mark Ward Jr I knew this was a religion song.
beautiful❤
OMG, the overtones!!! Total goosebumps on this one every time. More more more!
Wow, that was beautiful.
Breathtaking!!!
Stunning
Beautiful. Takes me back to my choral days.
This performance is as balanced as its original format for full SATB choir.
I think Stanford would have given his thumbs up to this performance!
I certainly did!
It's written for SSATBB. Yes even with doubling the Alto and Tenor parts it still sounds beautifully balanced!
Magnificent!

My, this sounds so pure. Especially special for me as I sang it in Chamber Choir last year.
Masterful! Beautiful! The most perfect rendition of this song. Ever.
Fantastici😍
Magnifico. Bella y profundo.
Epic, as always. Faultless even. Great unity on the dynamics
I didn't recognize this piece by name but as it started, remembered singing the English translation in college. Was one of my favorites and this did not disappoint! I have a cassette tape (yes it was that long ago) of our performance but it was nothing as perfect as this! I can't get over this choir and have listened to this at least a dozen times in the last week. This group is superb!!
Mag-bloody-nificent.
Sustained genius by all eight singers...and the composer.
This is the one - an exquisite performance
Beautiful 😍 enjoy singing this!! Been a few years now... So glad this is on our list xxx
I was absolutely jaw-dropped at the end of this video. Incredible!
To perform in this group each and every one must definitely be on their game and they absolutely are baby!!
So wonderfully sublime and blended! Thank you for the thrilling experience in seeing and hearing you make such gorgeous music!
Absolutely sublime-such purity and precision from such a small group, every voice perfection.
Sublime - another example of why Voces8 is the very best at what they do.
Wonderful. Words fail. A beautiful piece superbly done. Thank you.
We're currently singing this in my high school choir as a competition piece! Beautiful song and a beautiful performance!
Wunderbar... Stimmen wie aus dem Himmel! Mehr davon!
Quelles belles nuances vous faites, c'est un délice. Salutations de Montréal, Québec
