Samuel Barber's Agnus Dei is a choral arrangement of his timeless work, Adagio for Strings. Barber put the Latin words of the liturgical Agnus Dei to his original 1936 work. The partition calling for a mixed choir and optional accompaniment was written in 1967. The composer set religious words to this theme after reflecting for some time on how the Adagio for Strings was taken by the public and critics. After seeing how people associated his music with mourning and passion, Barber wanted to add a spiritual twist to this famous theme. Marked up similarly to the original, the slow introduction of the voices at the beginning prepares the chapter for the rest of the piece. Barber uses the words of Agnus Dei to dictate which intonations should be set to what voicings from the original. Initially it is the voice soprano who take the lead with the melody, but later on some of the other voices take the reigns of the melody. The repetition of the phrase « Agnus Dei » is significant as it shows what Barber was wanting from this arrangement. The haunting atmosphere of Agnus Dei has a similar effect to Adagio for Strings, with both using sustained lines and slow-moving melodies to create the desired effect. Although perhaps not as famous that the instrumental work, Agnus Dei is however popular in the register of choral music, with a number of futuristic vocal recordings of the work. Music is a beautiful refuge against the imperfection of the world. To Marie-Jeanne. *Lucien*

I went to a 2:00 PM special showing of the movie Platoon when it first came out in Eau Claire WI. It was for Vietnam vets only. There were maybe 50 of us scattered throughout the theater. When this incredible piece was played during the movie, it crawled under my skin and into the lining of my heart and has stayed there since that moment. When the movie ended, there was silence for about 15 seconds and then one guy yelled, "Yeah, it was like that, man ." And we applauded. It's almost 50 years since I was a witness to the fall of Saigon. My work with the national security agency has rendered me 100% disabled even now. I still don't know what to do with the experience. But I'm still alive, so that's a success of a sort.

This is as beautiful a performance of this fine work as you can get. The voices are absolutely stunning; the balance and blend are total perfection; the diction and clarity of pronunciation is outstanding as well. It also shows that one does not need to hear this from a larger chorus of singers, as the 'full effect' here is displayed in all its musical intent. Combining these two wonderful groups was a wonderful idea, and more of this collaboration between VOCES8 and VOKETT HANOVER would be totally welcomed and a real treat. Samuel Barber himself would indeed be pleased with this outstanding performance, that is quite certain.

Oh dear, you probably have got many days before you to live, before your funeral ceremony. My feeling is that it's quit ealy to dream and plan for thatfrom now.
Anyway, whatever you plan or prepare, you will not be there to enjoy it.
The plans of God for our lives, sometimes are far wider than we can ever imagine, regardless of our age or passion for life. Remember Elijah the prophet. He asked warmly to die, very tired cause of the conditions of his life. Despite that, God gave him strength, to go on, in order to fulfill His plans for Him. Much more glorious plans, that he could ever imagine. He met the God on the mountain, he did not die, but ascended to heaven with a fire chariot. And finally, he appeared on the mountain of Trasfiguration of Jesus, together with Moses.
I used to pay much attention to my funeral ceremony. For its impression and also, for the words that other people, will say for me. But then I started to realize, that it's a kind of desire for legacy. A vanity without any value, comparing it with the reality of Eternity that I will belong to.
The opinion of the other people for me, is useless, when the opinion of God is that matters. As he sees the deeps of my heart motives, for everything I do or think. Good or bad.
And even He knows all my Truth, he accepts me and loves me unconditionally. Because Jesus on the Cross gave me the privilege to accept His gift, He to become my Fther. Even I don't worth it.
The wedding ceremony, has nothing to do with the life in marriage. As well as, the funeral ceremony, has nothing to do with my eternal life.
Sometimes, when I hear a music or a hymn, I dream my funeral ceremony. But then, I wake up and say, Jesus, my real treasure, is to walk with you and your Love in this life, under any circumstances, easy or hard. And to live with you in the Eternity. So help me to pay more attention to the eternals, than to the temporaries.
And then, my soul is getting joyful and my heart prays for give me to serve Him, helping others, Not for me, but for them.
I will not stop myself, to imagine my funeral ceremony day. But now, dreaming the presence of Jesus there and touching people to decide to walk with Him and be together with Him in Eternity, as I will be already there.
The greater reward is to meet people that were saved by His blood through you.
Something that we'll see only there, even we believe now that our passing from this life has not touched anyone.
Never underestimate the power of your witness

What a great live performance! Perfect tempo and flow (not dragging like many of the performances of the Agnus Dei) and such a nice sound. Of course, we're listening to some of the best ensembles here! 👍👍👍 Voces16 and/or Doppelvoktett Hannover 😀😀😀

Samuel Barber hat nach 1945 unglaublich viel für das Land geleistet, in dem ich heute lebe. Das "adagio for strings" hier in der "Agnus dei" Version ist sein Meisterstück. Der Film dazu ist "Platoon".

Shaggnasty, it’s never too late. The simple message when Jesus was on earth gave was repent and believe the gospel. Romans chapter 10 verses nine and 10 gives you a simple template to salvation. That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus as Lord of your life and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made for salvation. For whosoever shall call on the Lord shall be saved.

It's not really God or religion what you need, you need hope and strength, to convince yourself that you can be truly good and leave a positive impact in those around you, to apologize to those you have hurt before and live a positive life from now on. But to really achieve this you must do this not from selfish fear of eternal damnation, but because you truly and selflessly want to better the world and be a good person, you don't need to save a country or be a superhero, you just need to lend a hand to someone in need, listen and give support to someone struggling, just be patient with people. That said don't let yourself become a punching bag for others. Let your religion be a source of strength, not a source of fear.

Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) is a choral composition in one movement by Samuel Barber, his own arrangement of his Adagio for Strings (1936). In 1967, he set the Latin words of the liturgical Agnus Dei, a part of the Mass, for mixed chorus with optional organ or piano accompaniment.

The Cathedral, Markuskirche in Hannover was nearly destroyed, along with most of the city by the consecutive bombing raid conducted throughout WW II, by British and US forces. Barber's Agnus Dei is most commonly associated with the battle of Britain and St. Peter's chathrdral in London during the battle over Britain. To have this song so beautifully preformed in a reconstructed / refurbish ancient church increases the poingnency of the music while the children and elders grasp a far deeper understanding for why that level and urgency of musical expression exists.

Stunning. The most amazing part to me is that they don’t seem to have a conductor. I couldn’t tell from the video as it was largely a far shot, but I didn’t notice any singer really leading the cues and cutoffs either. That is an amazing amount of work to rehearse to get to the point of breathing and working together as one.
