I think casting Jason as aqua man was an important choice. He already has a hardy sailor asthetic but he’s also charming and passionate. He turns aqua man from “oh it’s fish boy” to “YOOOO ITS FUCKING FISH BOY”
Yeah I agree. He adds that zing to it. Aquaman is a pretty laughable character on paper. I feel like the guy that played Orm could actually fit the traditional aquaman look very well. He would feel like a good casting but momoa was definitely the better choice. When you imagine Momoa you imagine a chill, bro-ey, badass guy. Now when people think about Aquaman they think Momoa.
I agree with this. I remember watching tv shows and Aquaman getting mentioned in it like he's the worst superhero that has ever been created, him being the butt of jokes and all, but that all got changed when Jason Momoa played him and making him freaking badass, giving him the respect he deserves.
One thing that hit me more than anything else about this movie: it has COLOR. This was the first time I had watched a DC film and actually LIKED the cinematography of the film.
I find the main thing with colour in DCEU movies isn't the lack of colour per shot, Aquaman still has a specific palette for each scene, but the colour varies and has a cinematic purpose
Marvel and DC have gone in different directions on this subject. The first two Thor movies, as bad as they were, were beautiful to look at. The third one kept the vibrant color palette, but outside of Guardians of the galaxy and in very specific instances, Black panther, Marvel movies have this ugly grey filter to them that makes everything look well, grey and bland and beige. Don't know why they did that, but almost every day scene looks like it's somehow both overcast and sunny.
They acted like mera just had to be there as a love interest. She was all over the place with no personal story, journey or motivation. We didn't know her at all.
They were apparently going to focus more on her and revolve more of the plot around her in the sequel but now that amber heard has the controversy going on its up in the air now
Considering all the jokes, I was monumentally impressed that they found a way to make talking to fish pretty awesome.

@Billy West like using the Mariana Trench, since no human being has gone to the bottom and seen what's there people can make up all kind of weird SHIT to be in it!
@ "no human being has gone to the bottom" Don Walsh, Jacques Piccard and famed oceanographer, visionary linguist and honorary blackbelt; James Cameron would like to have a word.
@ Actually the trench scene was one that kind of bothered me. That many creatures would need soooo much food to live that they would eventually eat all the fish in the ocean.

@@jackburton6239 it's called suspension of disbelief, not like it's real anyway, and considering how smart oceanic creatures are in this universe it's easy to assume they only eat what's needed.
@@abbeyBominable123 The studio heads were probably to scared to let the true enemy of the film be the existential violent nature of mankind. So they forced in an action fight with a big grey CG villain.
100% agreed on Mera. I found her to just be the "obligatory love interest" who's main goal is to look sexy instead of actually being an interesting character adding into the story. Definitely the weakest part of the movie which is a shame since it otherwise had such great characters and did so many things right.
I don't know I feel like Mera helped him find himself along the way. It felt like becoming the King without her wouldn't be possible because she inspired him and pushed him to the edge at the beginning to take his place. But that's my opinion.
Jailan Simon - There were a couple scenes were the cinematography was really weird with how the camera is spinning in circles and has angles that are off during some fight sequences. Pretty damn good overall though!
I do have a curiosity about it though, and that is with perspective. As the ocean scenes are obviously from the perspective, including enhanced sight, of a biological Atlantean, how does the movie look from an entirely human perspective?
My favourite point you made in this video: "Make the character's motivations strong enough that the main characters HAVE to fight, regardless whether the writers want them to or not." That's pretty incredible to think of characters truly taking on a life of their own. :)
it's central to one of the two main styles of writing; the character-driven style (plot-driven being the other) - the characters make choices, which lead to actions, conflict &c &c... a good example of the two styles being used: the first few seasons of got were character driven, the last couple: plot. nb the fan derailment it caused when they switched & how most of us got fans feel let down by the switch... not saying plot-driven is wrong, per se, just that it tends to lead to things like 'martha' if the writers aren't careful.

Honestly when you think about it, that's the biggest problem. The ending. The movie sets up this idea that humans are capable of both good and evil and Wonder Woman is supposed to come to grips with this fact that despite humanity's evils, its worth protecting for the innocents that fill the world. The problem is, despite this fact, its made very apparent that Ares is the direct cause of humans enacting evil onto the world, meaning that without his interference, humans would have remained mostly pure and the events of the movie would have never happened. For the sake of a plot twist, the movie undid the greatest aspect of its narrative and that being; Wonder Woman's Growth. Think about it, outside of falling in love after knowing a guy for little under a week, what does she learn? How does she grow? In what way has her perspective been changed? She started off believing humans are good and worth saving and protecting and that they can only be lead astray by a god and at the end, that's exactly what happens. She doesn't develop, she's just along for the ride. That ruins the ending, especially when she learns that Ares is responsible and when Steve Trevor dies, instead of targeting Ares first, she attacks a bunch of random humans who are being influenced by *Ares* . Its sad but while Wonder Woman is a mostly good film, its ending was botched at best.
@@slithagain4352 People see what they want they assume that after WW killed Ares the war just ended but if you watch the movie they were trying to work towards peace before Steve and WW arrived the problem was some people on the German side didn't want peace because they enjoyed war. All those people are defeated and disgraced by WW.
NO, the end of WW and BvS doesn't throwaway the conflict message of the film, both movies grow the characters by showing there is more than one lesson to be learned, and that life is more complicated than their original construction. WW learns that not only is evil at work at both the human and god levels, but she herself could be deceived by the evil god about the circumstances. Finding out life is not as simple as one thought IS growth. In BvS both heroes grow by ascertaining that their conflict was manipulated into being by the bad guy. They learn there are more heroes than the two of them in the world, and that the antagonist is capable of summoning monsters that go beyond this world (thus Doomsday is hardly a throwaway villian). What the poster is calling "inconsistency" is simply character progression and greater comprehension, in both cases.

My favourite small element of Aquaman is how hard Orm is trying to radiate superiority to Arthur during the scene in the throne room. The armor, the cape, the way he slowly drifts down from above, even the way he talks; it's all just him flexing, and I love it.
@@Dante-vf4sd Everything about this scene was set up by Orm to make himself look and feel superior to Arthur. He has him chained, on his knees at the foot of the steps leading up to the throne, where he sits, fully decked out in gold armor, with a big gold crown. Then he slowly drifts down from on high, big golden cape flowing behind him, making him look like some sort of heavenly being. None of that was necessary. This meeting could have been conducted in some sort of private conference room, or in a prison cell, but that wouldn't be good enough fro Orm. He needed to show Arthur how much better than him he is.
I agree but he had his brother (Aquaman) like that for his ego and probably fear of his power. Fish talk and he had been doing his hero thing for quite a while before they met. He also was the older brother and blamed him for his mothers "death" even though he was a baby at the time. She chose a mortal over a merman King.

In this case, "Martha", is the name of the Batman and Superman's mothers, was used to resolve their conflict without really addressing the cause of the conflict in the first place. The easier the plot is resolved with one example, Martha being what tied them together, the higher the score on the "Martha" test. Mera is player by the same woman, who abused Johnny Depp in their relationship. Please just fire her from the role, then we´ll get a got actress to play the role and have a beautifull side character, that actually contributes to the plot and isn´t boring.
Then we need to establish very clear boundaries of what kind of criminal offences should merit actors not being given mainstream roles anymore. Because almost every single actor is a criminal. The use of drugs, for instance, is rampant and since they can get away with much more than an average mortal, they exploit their privilege. Amber Heard is by far not the only one in Hollywood who is abusive partner-the only reason her thing caught so much fire is because it fitted nicely within the prevailing political hatred that is ongoing across the nation, it's just a social media proxy war. You want to be consequential, we need to get rid of _all_ absusive partners in the industry and I guarantee that will result in quite a few of your favorite actors being fired.

I don't know, someone not wanting a war like Mera and inciting a call to adventure to me seems pretty established. "Why do you not want a war with ocean people and the land folk?" "BECAUSE I'M ONE OF THE IDIOTS THAT LIVES IN IT"
actually she mentions that war goes against what Kidman thought them (her and orm), so by that she was probbly raised by Kidman and thought that land and sea go together.
@bruncla2303 Yes, and in Justice League she also mentions that Queen Kidman took her in. I don't see why he's saying she's a bland character. I liked her because she wasn't some damsel. I felt she did everything from a moral code. In Justice League she was also the one to motivate Aquaman to fight.
How to make an awesome film? Create Characters with: Clear Goals in direct conflict with each other. Strong Motivations to carry out those goals. I remember reading the comic run this film was based on. Then I saw the movie in cinemas. And man, if you've ever experienced it, you know how much better a fantastic movie is when you have moments of "hell yeah I remember that bit!"
I like it being comic accurate and goofy like a power ranger villain, because black manta uses Atlantean technology...and every thing from Atlantis is weird...
U forgot the part in the final battle where Mira told Aquaman to hold back because too many casualties already From this you can see that she doesn't mind a few sacrifices if to avoid a great war
That's what I'm thinking. The underwater kingdoms may be technologically advanced but their societies are very much akin to that of medieval times. The idea of war and killing is somewhat commonplace for them. She does what she has to buy obviously still cares about the vast well being of her people. I do not fully agree with the his assessment of Mera
While true, this came pretty late in the film. The point of establishing a character's motivations early is so that we can feel for them throughout the film. We feel for Arthur's justified anger at the Atlanteans for killing his mother, just as we feel what it means to him when he chooses to set that aside to try to save everyone. We know that Mera doesn't want billions of people to die but we don't know why that means so much to her personally that she would do something about it when everyone else does nothing.
12:14 Arthur:Must... save...Atlana. Orm:Why did you say that name? Mera:It's his mother's name. Orm:My mother is also called Atlana. Let's take down Starro together.
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer She's more exposed now and people now know that she is a liar and abuser. I doubt it would make another billion dollars if she is still in the movie. I mean, would you or any non-sjw support a movie with an actress who has been abusing her husband and makes up lies to make herself the victim?
@WhoDarestheMAN gamer At least try understanding things...the Heard fiasco came out AFTER this movie came out. No one particularly liked SJWs but that doesn't mean Hollywood can just ignore it. Go look up what happened to Robert Downey Jr in the past. He was exiled too and it had absolutely nothing to do with his acting abilities. @@vigm4467 You're right, his character kind of barely grows, that growing will probably have to show when he gets into the fuss of ruling an ocean empire. Same here, i didn't expect much but the film was entertaining, the characters surprisingly interesting. And the effects were gorgeously overwhelming, just right for this kind of light entertainment :)

Aquaman is one of the best "drive in" movies in years. I think you've narrowed down a lot of reasons why, but the hero journey in Aquaman is so well followed. That's the biggest one. We recognize this journey. We know this journey. It's universal.
I thought Mera's character is grounded in her being a parallel of Aquaman's mother. Also engaged to be married to someone she doesn't love. Also seeks to escape that and to help the surface, like Aquaman's mother. Not the best of motivations perhaps, but it's there. They should have only made it more explicit
It was plenty explicit to me. Literally her first conversation with Arthur in this movie, she talks about how billions of people will die. Mera has a conscious and doesn't agree with this.
What its botherd me is the uploader call her ""the blandeist comic book character in existience" I think Natalie Portman's Jane Foster already took that title,XD
Beast, I also totally agree with your assessment. Mera does seem like a very strong parallel to Atlanna. And yes, it would have helped if they'd tried to wedge in a little something into the story to make this more explicit, more obvious. Maybe a line like "I don't want to the next Atlanna".
@@angelg6565 I really didn't mind Mera. I thought that she was endearing during those scenes on Malta when she was learning about humanity and regular people. And her eating the rose was a small parallel to Diana with being sort of being strangers in a strange land. My only (minor) gripe with Mera is that I didn't like her almost bizarrely red hair color. I wish that it had been a more realistic feeling shade of red, whether a slightly darkish "auburn" red or an orange-red "Irish" red hair. Her hair color looked too cartoony for my taste.
Ignacio Cañas yes it is 💀 there’s even a photo online from the hair department of all the wigs they used on the movie. It’s so obvious too; they look like 15 dollar wigs, they’re way too thick looking for Amber Heard’s head when dry and are so bluntly synthetic.
Great points! Although I think you're too hard on Mera but I have to agree that in comparison to Arthur, Black Manta and Orm, she isn't as well-developed. However, that said, I think it's a bit much to say she's one of the most bland and most forgettable main comic book movie characters in existence. Have to severly disagree - Mera was far from bland and forgetable. Giving her more of an arc would have distracted from Arthur and his journey. She filled her part perfectly - being Mentor and Sidekick aswell as romantic interest and even Comic relief - all in one. She gave exposition to the audience as well as being a counterpart to Arthurs personality when needed. They used her for the storys needs without compromising her character so that she would stray to far from her comic book origin. Its obvious she fights for Xebels people (not Atlanteans as a whole) being a good daughter to her father and proud princess for Xebels people. She learns as much about the surface as Arthur leanrs about the Ocean world.I agree with a lot of points of your analysis, but with Mera you are severly overlooking crucial details - at least in my opinion.
Thank you, i can only agree with your opinion on this one, you cant forget that not every person in a movie and not even every "protagonist" if you wanna call her that which she is not since there is only one protagonist and that is Aquaman himself and we have his counterparts antagonists in the prince and blackmamba. Some might argue even Blackmamba is too much the movie was really full of stuff it pretty much exceeded with the stuff it wanted to tell. And then you want to give a side character more screen time to build her character up and her motiviations ? excuse me what... i think she filled her role pretty good and maybe if she moves to a stronger romantic intereset in a second movie maybe we get more character build up and that would be cool. Thankfully that didnt happen in the first movie. And not everything is about consistent i would say, it can be a strong point and it is in this film certainly but it doesnt have to be like that in every movie and it shouldnt tbh depends on the movie and how you handle the characters really. I like Aquaman quite a bit more than alot of people i know but wonderwomen everyone i know agreed is a much better movie from start to finish alot of it comes down to less confusing action and too much different story elements in one movie that were not build up correctly partly motivational wise and storywise.
People just choose when not to pay attention in order to bash on something. Mera was clearly established and she kept going on about “I don’t want a war!” How could this person have missed this?!

Yeah, pissed off because she hasn't had a conversation with anyone in centuries and eats men she deems unworthy of the trident. Sounds like the best friend a woman could have!
The one thing that always irked me about that movie was that the love interest’s hair always looked so fake. It looks like someone put a red splash over her hair and turned off the opacity. It just looks bad.
Panteleimon Zaikis bruh they were talking about the girl with the red hair who has the tacky wig we know that these fictional characters aren’t real 😂 edit: I don’t know if you were joking if yes then it wasn’t that funny
Atlanteans have certain mutations that make them resemble aquatic creatures. Many aquatic creatures are bright red as the wavelengths that make up the color red is absorbed by the water, meaning that they look greyish underwater and are well camouflaged, as it doesn't stand out at all. If I am remembering right, in-story the character is considered to be plain-looking to the commoner Atlanteans who can't breathe air as they see her as without color or outstanding features. The noble air breathers, on the other hand, find her more human characteristics and vibrant red hair beautiful.
I will never understand how actors and actresses in movies have bad hair moments. Like, if you don’t dye your roots and get some extensions or find a quality wig... what is the problemmmmm?! Haha.
Aquaman was easily my favorite DC movie since the Dark Knight, and while I didn't hate Wonder Woman, I agree that it failed on the ending. Good video, I hope with Aquaman and Shazam we can get more DC movies with strong and consistent characters and stories.
I'd actually like to argue that introducing Ares as the main villain was to be expected. The entire reason Diana even decided to enter the war was so take him down. She knew he was the cause. The internal conflict she had of whether she should support humanity or not was underlying and was focused upon in the last scenes when Ares was trying to show her how evil humanity can be. Her decision was made when she realized that humanity can be evil yet gods can be too. Therefore it made her realize that good and evil go hand in hand. And she knew that if she joined Ares it'd be pure anarchy not only for humans but for other beings (i.e. demi gods etc)
Expected - yes. Executed properly - not really. See regardless to whether you see who Ares is or not, I was still with them when he makes his appearance near the end. And I find his monologue pretty convincing, claiming that he only "whispered in their ear", not actually making humanity do all the horrid stuff they did. It does set him up as a villain, but doesn't change the fact that humanity itself can be fairly bad... but than Ares is defeated and Germans no longer even try to stop their enemies, everyone is "buddy-buddy", which basically implies Ares was the only reason the war happened. Sure this all can be argued, but the point is the presentation does make Diana's prime conflict meaningless because it hints that humanity isn't to blame for the war - she just needed to find the "big bad" and beat his butt. The most compelling conflicts are always those were there is not clear right and wrong; that is why Marvel's "Civil War" worked so well - regardless to which side you support, both do have convincing arguments as to why they should be picked. In "Wonder Woman" that conflict comes down to that if humanity is to be saved, than you save both the good and the bad... but if the bad is the result of outside force (in this case Ares) that conflict loses meaning, because it gives a clear, right course of action (beat Ares and you only save the good).
@@Kewryn agreed, it wasn't executed properly which sucks because I'm a huge DC fan, but we always get the short end of the stick when it comes to live action since they choose to have multiple directors that don't work together and eventually give us poorly executed movies. It was executed like a Scooby-Doo villain though- Surprise! It was old man Jenkins in a mask all along... and if it wasn't for those darn kids he would've gotten away with it.
The film unfortunately did a disservice to the depiction and character of the Greek Gods in general and of Ares in particular. The Greek gods were completely immortal, they literally could not die. Their immortality was the most defining characteristic and not their powers and to say at the beginning of the film that not only died but killed by another god is completely wrong. Also, the character of Ares is completely wrong. The God depicted as Ares is mostly the Roman equivalent Mars and NOT the Greek god Ares. Ares was stupid, very aggressive, bloodthirsty god and Ares in the film.. wasn’t.
Can't agree more. Mera and Orm should've been played by better actors to make this movie great. The rest of the cast did what they had to. Manta was a great cast. So were Aquaman's parents.
@@gwenwalravens8030 I think these two are simply poorly written characters in this movie. They lack personality and I genuinely don't think it's the actors fault all the way.
@@sahelanthropus4991 Just look at the scenes where Mera is using her powers. Mera is decent enough as a character. AH just cannot act. Compare her role to Manta. Manta's character isn't that great either. The character sometime just doesn't make any sense but the actor makes it believable.
Its funny how her husband played a captain on a ship but somehow she ended up at the bottom of the sea. Guess she hit him too hard it sunk the ship. Glad he didn't save her.
Mera’s motivation is that she doesn’t want to marry someone who will start a war, Orm. She can’t ask her dad for help, King Xebel, since he also wants to invade the surface. So Mera has to dethroned Orm by helping Arthur be king of Atlantis, since she knows Arthur helped to prevent Earth be invaded by Steppenwolf.
She was also really close to Arthur's mom who thought her that the land and land walkers are not evil. So she's trying to do the right thing and stop a massacre.
Mera isn't out of character, she's defending her people yet her people are attacking *her* while working towards a goal that would bring her people to war, being lead by a psychopath. Mera has been written strangely in comics for years. Sometimes she's freaking awesome, other times she won't tell Arthur what she's doing and why, precisely like she did in the movie. You are essentially complaining about the character being true to character.
I think the focus is how the character is presented in the movie. Not the character itself, like she can explain to Arthur those special soldiers attacking them are responsible for many different atrocities. That can properly explain her motivation to kill at the same time protect the sea people.
Mera is an odd character, she always has been. It seemed pretty accurate to me on all counts, though there were a few softer moments that honestly didn't fit the Mera I remember from the comics.
Also remember, this squad of soldiers is there to kill Aquaman and Mera. When you're defending yourself against greater numbers, lethal force will sometimes be necessary.
let me tell you what was really consistent about Aquaman. Conversations being interrupted by a random explosion. It must have happened like 5 times and after the 3rd it was pretty cringy
i just watched and completely agree with you. The first one was good but then it happens again and i am thinking "well looks like the writing team ran out of ideas". Such a trick should only be used once.
Orm/Ocean Master is by far, the best DCEU villain. Based on a lot of what you said in this video. His goals absolutely clashed with Aquaman’s, and he believed that what he’s doing was right. Plus, the final scene of him seeing Atlanna after 20 years was very powerful. As if all the anger and hatred he had held for Arthur and the surface world vanished. Like a full arc for a villain realising the errors of his way. Overall, the best villain of the DCEU so far in my book.
To be honest, I don't see Orm as the villain. I see Black Manta as the Villain because Manta wants to kill Aquaman for revenge. Orm doesn't seem to care about Arthur until he confronts him. Orm even says that he doesn't want to kill him before their fight at the ring of fire. Orm like General Zod is only trying to help his people. For Zod it was finding a new home, for Orm it was giving everything back that the surface world threw down to their oceans. Zod in the end turn full baddy, and Orm in the end surrendered once he saw his mother still being alive. Yes Orm wanted to take down the surface world, but you need to hear his side of the story. Even King Nereus who isn't a villain in this film believed the same thing.
CavemanJesus4Life Exactly. A great villain is one who you can actually agree with and understand why they wanted to do something. Black Manta is a typical revenge-driven villain who was rotten to begin with. But I love him, because of his awesome suit and I love hating him. While Orm was not rotten to begin with, but he became like that because of the way he grew up without his mother. So both of them are great villains in their own right.
Filmento's editing from 12:04 - 12:16 is quite subtle yet really impressive. He manages to emphasize the importance of the 'Martha Test' in DC movies without words. It's funny too.
When Mera first appeared in the film, I thought it was very sudden. It would've been better to at least got like a scene of Mera deciding to go to Aquaman for help after seeing that submarine attack.
Did you notice how the first fight between aqua man and the king, aqua man was in what looked to be copper, and the king is in silver, and at the end aqua man is in gold and the king is still in silver, and rarity’s usually go from copper
did anyone even know who Amber Turd was before the Johnny Depp trial? heres hoping WB recast her before Aquaman 2 comes out, because if the Turd is still in it, it will bomb
Literally the top comment is about amber and it's from way before the trial so you coulda answered that yourself lol. Most people don't know who the hell she is though. I didn't. Kinda wish I still didn't
i disagree with your comments on mera. shes conflicted at heart but chooses to believe aquaman is the true king and is the answer to doing whats best for her people
From what I remember the movie did give Mera a motivation, they just didn't focus on it a whole lot. She decided to help Aquaman defeat Orm because she knew that he would bring war which would kill a lot of her people, so she's trying to prevent a war.
@@rebecca4680 Also she was betrothed to Orm, but didn't want to marry him, nor does she agree with his plan to go to war against the surface. It's the equivalent of someone being forced to marry Hitler despite not agreeing with any of his beliefs.
Rebecca but we’re not told WHY she wants to stop this war, especially when she’s been living with the notion that humans are irresponsible and wasteful. What could’ve been a motivation for Mera is that she is doing this out of honor for Queen Atlanna who would’ve wanted to see Arthur succeed (just by that connection alone it also sets up an arc for Mera in that she will he the new Queen of Atlantis having learned from Atlanna herself as a protege)

Saw this on my birthday and teared up it was an emotional movie, the acting was top tier I felt invested in each character. The villains didn't have dumb reasons for being a villain which tends to plague comic movies. The soundtrack was also amazing it enhanced emotional scenes and wasn't to over the top. Can't wait for aquaman 2.
The Martha test... The motivations of the antagonists is so strong that they have to fight, and no word "Martha" would stop this... Martha, I man Atlanna, enters the room...
But she entered after the conflict was resolved and helped to soothe the wounds of Orm rather than resolving it herself. Which makes sense as Orm was still bound by the laws he held to reject her. With Arthur on the throne though that no longer matters.
Wow! I can appreciate your opinion. I think you are off-base with Mira. Mira serves the kingdom and its people. Though Aquaman and her become intimately involved (crisis can create those intense bonds between men and women), she believed that if Aquaman secured the throne, it would bring peace for the people of the land and the people of the sea. She was a princess, with authority. She helped Aquaman understand his destiny and then helped him fulfill it. Forgettable? Debatable. Essential? Irrefutable. Absolutely. Thank you for taking the time to read my humble opinion.

Mera was an obligatory love interest, the only personality trait she had was the red hair, Amber is a bad actress and had no chemistry with Jason in the first place, WB should just fire her and hire Emilia Clarke
3:45 Diana's goal isn't to accept humanity, that doesn't even make sense as a character goal. If she wanted to accept humanity, she would just... do that. Story done. Her goal is to stop Ares so that the war will end. That's why Ares is the big baddie of the movie. Now, I think you mean to say that her arc involves accepting humanity for what it is, but only kinda. Diana's naivety is what makes her believe that stopping Ares will stop the war. When she thinks she kills Ares and the war continues is when she has doubts about humanity's true nature, but bc of Steve and everyone else, she knows mankind isn't purely evil. That's what keeps her fighting. She already accepted humanity long before this point. Now, the 3rd act kinda backpedals on this idea by having it turn out that stopping Ares actually does stop the war kinda defeating the point of that philosophical question. But it's not bad bc of character goals, it's bad bc it doesn't really follow through with its own ideas.
@@zina2141 Yea, I still stand by my point that that doesn't make sense as a character goal. Stopping a villain doesn't prove humanity is good, it proves that the main character can stop a bad guy. Let me explain it like this: In the Dark Knight, Joker believes that people will always resort to chaos in the end, Batman has faith in people though, but Batman's goal isn't to convince Joker that people won't go crazy, it's to stop him because Joker is out here killing folks. Batman having faith in people adds to the philosophical questions that the Dark Knight poses, but it has nothing to do with his direct goals. It has a lot to do with the arcs of the characters, but not their specific goals. Likewise, Diana has faith in humanity, but her goal is to stop Ares bc she believes that the war is his fault. Stop Ares, stop the war. That's her goal. She's not trying to stop Ares to prove that humanity is good, she's trying to stop him because he's a bad guy that's out here doing bad guy shit. The ethics of humanity is a theme, and is a philosophical question in the movie, but it's not a specific motivation.

King Orm was a great villain and I loved that final battle in the end where they were battling on the ship (similar to battling on land) and rain was pouring on them and like this both the sides had advantages.... Also, Mera was a pretty good character in my opinion... Not really good but still, pretty good...
Wow... How did he give you a Loki vibe? He isn't a trickster, he is leading an army, sure, but most villains do and also he is not being mind controlled... Also, he is completely evil, unlike Loki who is 80% good...
King Orm to me is a combination of Loki and Killamonger. He hates his brother(Loki), thinks he can rule best (loki), has a gladiator battle with the protagonist (Killamonger), and wants to declare war on the surface war for altruistic reasons with more advanced technology (Orm wants to invade to protect the kingdoms from surface world pollution even if done through nefarious methods, Killamonger wants to free people of his race around the world).

Honestly Mera was not the most bland and forgetable characters. I found her to be maybe the best character. don't remember exactly why though(and no it wasn't because she's pretty).
Yeah, I didn’t think she was bland at all. And honestly, I think her motive speaks for itself. We didn’t need an obvious reason why she wants to ensure the safety and correct leadership of her home.
I just dont get how people get confused with this movie. Sure the movie jumps around scenes but that doesnt make the movie confusing. It still makes sense.
I remember watching the trailer for this and thinking, "there's no way this will be a good movie." I'm not a fan of DC at all either. I was literally shocked at the end of the movie when I released, "that was pretty good."
I think casting Jason as aqua man was an important choice. He already has a hardy sailor asthetic but he’s also charming and passionate. He turns aqua man from “oh it’s fish boy” to “YOOOO ITS FUCKING FISH BOY”
And then amber Heard turns it into "ah I can't stand this shit turn it off"
More like Fish MAN
Jim Carrey would have been a better choice, in your opinion. 🤦
And wow, Mera's hair I'm dying
watched on LG OLED and it was such a pleasure indeed. The most visually satisfying DCEU movie.
You can thank Zack Snyder for that one

That's pretty incredible to think of characters truly taking on a life of their own. :)

it's central to one of the two main styles of writing; the character-driven style (plot-driven being the other) - the characters make choices, which lead to actions, conflict &c &c...
a good example of the two styles being used: the first few seasons of got were character driven, the last couple: plot.
nb the fan derailment it caused when they switched & how most of us got fans feel let down by the switch...
not saying plot-driven is wrong, per se, just that it tends to lead to things like 'martha' if the writers aren't careful.

It never occurred to me that the ending of Wonder Woman legitimately throws away the entire message of the movie.
I've been telling everyone about this, and you know what they say?

Could you elaborate ?

@@andrewowens4421 What is the martha test and who is martha?
@@sigrid.koppel The "Martha Test" is when you use a single interpersonal characteristic to resolve a plot problem without delving into why the problem is significant in the first place. In this case, "Martha", is the name of the Batman and Superman's mothers, was used to resolve their conflict without really addressing the cause of the conflict in the first place. The easier the plot is resolved with one example, Martha being what tied them together, the higher the score on the "Martha" test. For the Aquaman movie, his "Martha", that being his mother, wasn't used to *solve* a major plot point, only helped to drive that plot point toward its conclusion.

While true, this came pretty late in the film. The point of establishing a character's motivations early is so that we can feel for them throughout the film. We feel for Arthur's justified anger at the Atlanteans for killing his mother, just as we feel what it means to him when he chooses to set that aside to try to save everyone.
Totally agree

@@pzaikis, WTF Man! Da fuk you mean Atlantians aren't real? You've got to say spoiler alert before saying something like that.
Anu Sha Yeah the entire lead up is to kill Aries. ALways.
Ares was stupid, very aggressive, bloodthirsty god and Ares in the film.. wasn’t.

Mera’s motivation is that she doesn’t want to marry someone who will start a war, Orm. She can’t ask her dad for help, King Xebel, since he also wants to invade the surface. So Mera has to dethroned Orm by helping Arthur be king of Atlantis, since she knows Arthur helped to prevent Earth be invaded by Steppenwolf.

beside, she saw her father being owned by the guy was one of the motive
She was also really close to Arthur's mom who thought her that the land and land walkers are not evil. So she's trying to do the right thing and stop a massacre.
Yeah you'd think a guy who rewatches this stuff so much and pays attention to details wouldn't miss so much, but then you'd be wrong.
No mera can beat orm in a fight

Overall, the best villain of the DCEU so far in my book.
i second that opinion
Us they made him very comic book accurate. Love his Oceanmaster costume design. That helmet is boss.

Love this movie. It’s an adventure with a lot of heart. It’s not perfect, but it’s fun and heroic and Jason Mamoa kills it.
Did you notice how the first fight between aqua man and the king, aqua man was in what looked to be copper, and the king is in silver, and at the end aqua man is in gold and the king is still in silver, and rarity’s usually go from copper
Cool :D subtle*
did anyone even know who Amber Turd was before the Johnny Depp trial? heres hoping WB recast her before Aquaman 2 comes out, because if the Turd is still in it, it will bomb
They removed her and i think emilya clarck is replacing her
Just thought she was hot but nothing else memorable from watching the movie.
@@EricGraham94 Do you really expect people to give you a motivation for why they DON'T kill people? Seriously?
@@EricGraham94 I mean generally speaking the default for people is not to kill others, I can see you give reasons to kill people but reasons not to kill people? Well reason number 1 - You'd be killing people...
Everything about this movie was great except for the script. 7.5/10. Entertaining, but not much depth (no pun intended).
And also the hot actress hehe
Edox the Infinite there is some depth, but I'll agree that its pretty weak. Theres the debate about how pollution is killing the ocean, and the Atlantian's belief that theyre superior to humans. Not much, but a little
@@Integer_Overload enough for me. Especially as an aquaman starter movie

In BvS it was used to show Superman's humanity, since Batman saw him nothing other than an alien capable of conquering the human race.
Luc Germain he’s right
Panteleimon Zaikis yup
She was just skin tight eye candy to help push the story along. She was the MacGuffin that knew where the MacGuffin was.
Your videos help me so much with my English class because they teach me how to analyse plotlines and it's so helpful my guy, THANK YOU
Meera was visually pleasing. Characterwise boring as hell.
mera and aquaman had zero romantic chemistry and their "love" was shoehorned and came outta nowhere. that part really bothered me
It’s better then Superman and Lois Lane in these movies.
Don't expect to see the same actress in the sequel😂
Johnny Depp thought so.
She took a shit in johnny depp's bed and cut off his fucking finger
My opinion on the three best DCEU movies:
1. Shazam
2. Wonder Woman
3. Aquaman
For me it’s
1. Aquaman
2. Shazam
3. WW
Same, after seeing Shazam, Man of Steel went to bottom of my list
But I wish they were interconnected in some way, like the way mcu movies are interconnected.
1. BvS
2. Man of Steel
3. Shazam
In my Opinion, I like superhero movies with great fighting Scenes and these 3 movies are on top of my list.
And the Soundtrack, my Goodness the Soundtrack of BvS and MoS is Amazing!
Man of steel an the batman movies are the best. Then shazaam
Mera was an obligatory love interest, the only personality trait she had was the red hair, Amber is a bad actress and had no chemistry with Jason in the first place, WB should just fire her and hire Emilia Clarke
And cat taber
Diana's goal isn't to accept humanity, it's that guy's goal. (whatever his name was) He wants her to accept humanity.
@@sigrid.koppel steveeeeeeeeeeeee
She is the God Killer. That's her motivation and her nickname.
Diana's goal : proving humanity is good by stopping ares
Ares goal : prove humanity is evil
But tell if I'm wrong please😁

Mera: pretty but not good
@@rajatava3500 He's trying to overthrow his brother and become king and start a war in the first Thor movie that's what Loki wanted
I agree with Tyler Lamb more... But still, he didn't give me a Loki nor Killmonger vibe feeling... He was just... Not as good as them... But yeah, I get it...

What I loved about this movie is how the story was able to focus on the titular character without neglecting even the minor characters.
Aquaman didn't carry the movie... He was swept along with it just like any of those fantasy adventure stories should sweep up the lead character
It’s because of her tits

I just dont get how people get confused with this movie. Sure the movie jumps around scenes but that doesnt make the movie confusing. It still makes sense.
I remember watching the trailer for this and thinking, "there's no way this will be a good movie." I'm not a fan of DC at all either. I was literally shocked at the end of the movie when I released, "that was pretty good."
