Charlie's Angels - How Gender Obsession Can Ruin a Film | Anatomy Of A Failure

- The 2019 Elizabeth Banks reboot of Charlie's Angels with Kristen Stewart and Princess Jasmine and the other one didn't go so well. Not only did it flop bad enough to end the franchise, it also got quite a bit of heat from audiences, mostly because of its relentless transfixion with being a female driven movie like Wonder Woman or Captain Marvel. In today's family friendly episode of Anatomy of a Failure, let's see how this film was so obsessed in its gender related agenda that it inadvertently managed to ruin itself. If you're planning to make a female driven action movie, here's what to avoid. Now let's just wait for Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow.

As sad as it is, Hollywood tends to write strong FEMALE characters instead of STRONG female characters
Dang that's a really important distinction that I didn't think of before
Dayummm; What sort of wisdom is it💪🏻💯
How to make a classic strong FEMALE character:
-take a toxic male character;
-make it female;
-profit;
this means literally nothing, just a pseudo intellectual comment
I think the problem is that they don’t write strong female CHARACTERS because they’re too focused on the first two
Remember when being a cool character meant you were a cool character, regardless of gender? Like Ripley from Aliens?
Ripley was also written originally as a man. It was swapped last minute and made it more interesting. It could've been played by any gender and still be good cause the foundation writing was good.
In Alien and Aliens, Ripley didn't start out as a badass, she developed into a badass in the movie. Even in Aliens, Burk and the marines cast Ripley in a supporting role until she showed them she is the smartest, most capable person in the room.
You finally see Ripley's character replace her public image among the marines after Burk's failed attempt to implant the aliens in her and Newt.
I would say that is what makes good movies. Leave the politically-fueled agendas outside the studio, and just make great movies. Otherwise, it's just propaganda, because anyone can recognize it for what it is.
I member!
Remember when you could differentiate between masculine and feminine?
@Benjamin McMullan what the fuck happen to women? They can vote, they can body build and star in movies, cartoons and more and they have the Gall to say THEY are OPPRESSED!?😡
Gender politics shouldn't be a zero sum game. Supporting women doesn't necessarily mean you have to hate men to do it.

No not because of politcal statements but because they love each other and there is no gender bias crap. I believe in good characters not good gender characters.
One problem with woke movies and video games is they throw the gender or race victim thing on to make a politcal statement.
I have no problem with female leads example being lucina from fire emblem not that she’s the main character but you can control her and boy o boy I use her all the time like she’s a main character cause she’s a absolute badass and I ship her and robin.
I never once looked at Lucina as a overpowered female. She’s a natural badass who’s female. I respect the fact that she never treats male genders differently she’s treats everyone the same.

I knew exactly what you mean. SEMI- LONG POST AHEAD!
For a somewhat recent example of this, I'd look at the 2015 film 'Krampus,' specifically at the character Aunt Linda. She's not a strong Amazon who also happens to be a brilliant scientist; She's an average, slightly overweight homemaker who has some issues with her sister (Which they both can be blamed for) when they all get together for Christmas. Over the course of the film, she and her sister begin setting aside their differences amid the ordeal their families are going through. Then, around the film's second act, there's a scene when they and another adult are attacked in the attic by killer toys Krampus has sicced on them. When all seems lost, Aunt Linda (Who at the time was wearing a goofy- looking Rudolph sweater) gains a nice shot of courage, and uses a broken- off icicle and axe to bravely fight off the toys and save her family. I'd say THAT's an example of a strong, empowering, inspirational example for women; An average, seemingly- unimpressive woman whose love for her family gives her the strength to stand up to evil.
Like the new terminator
Anddddd you can have both types of 'strong female characters'! Ta-da!
Captain Marvel is exactly this. Too strong. I mean, she destroyed a ship in seconds that the whole Avengers could not even make a dent in. It's not that she's a woman, it's that she doesn't have any character flaws.
@@invizcharlie9477 I think the biggest problem with Captain Marvel is that the creators are taking a character that's unlikeable and trying to convince us that she's likeable. With Tony, he's portrayed as unlikeable and we know he's unlikeable. And then he experiences character growth. Captain Marvel is a flat, arrogant, and dull character with no growth or likeability.
When I think about a great way to portray a “badass woman” I think of the animated Mulan movie.
Yes, she accomplished a lot, but we see her initially really bad at what she does. We root for her and her victories are more deserved. Additionally, she still has plenty of funny moments, making her more well-rounded.
I’m so tired of these “emotionless, badass, perfect” women in movies. Please. Literally give me anything else.
Padme
@Tracker X Agreed.
May I just add that I love the animated Mulan and I would never get tired of repeating it, I know it all word by word😂
You are totally right, she is portrayed as a real women, someone who is cable, strong and independent yet she also has a soft side where she cares for the people she love in this case going into war for her father and she also has a little crush on her commander, that's girly for me, the fact that she has flaws it's what makes her more humane and relatable and during combat she had support by the men to save china which overall shows that despite our differences in gender, race blah blah we are all human😊
Mulan is possibly the only female lead character in a Disney movie I have ever actually been able to label as "favourite" because of that. She struggles, she fails, but she doesn't give up, and that's a major part of what makes her a good character, that she's allowed to go through that and show regular, human emotion as she does so.

They went so deep into making the women "strong" and "powerful" that they literally forgot to give them flaws. The whole female cast are mary sues
And pretty much all Mary Sues are exactly the same. That's even worse when you have not only 1 but 3 Mary Sues like here. They're basically 3 times the same character, just portrayed by different actors. And i'm losing the term "character" losely here.

and it's sad because they wanted to empower women and young girls but we literally couldn't even relate to the protagonists
How to make good female leads:
Make good characters.THEN make them female.
Or just make actual female characters with real female traits. No one wants women pretending to be men.
EDIT: also, no, you can't design a good character and just genderswap them at the end. Men and women are different. A strong character has their gender decided early in the design process. You make a female character, THEN you make them good. Too many people just stop at the "make female" part and forget that that there's more to it than that.
Sad thing is some of these movies that have all female lead characters were wrote by females themselves. It's like those female writers don't know how to write a female character.
By making female characters good leaders, don't you make them masculine? The Mary Sue is the innate birthright value of the feminine projected by gender egalitarians onto masculine domains, where one is not born with value, instead value is is made by struggle, violence, competition and sacrifice.

Maintaining a thriving civilization is more dependent on leadership, specifically population control (not just increase), rules, and rule enforcement.
So JUST making babies as a woman isn't directly important to the maintenance of that civilization.
It is population control that DIRECTLY involves women's ability to birth, making her being a female important. JUST like men are required to impregnate. BOTH are required here, EQUALLY.
Outside of reproduction, BOTH men and women are capable of doing OTHER important key things like building, working, farming, researching, teaching, and serving in the military which ALL (I would argue) are MUCH more important factors than reproduction. PEOPLE in general can work as much as needed for a thriving civilization while still being able to reproduce fairly quickly if required.
Women's reproductive value is equal to men's. Further, I argue reproduction is NOT important at this point since the earth is becoming overpopulated.

Funny that the last Charlies Angels movie series easily defined the personalities of their characters. all three were pretty, flirty, and good fighters, but Lucy Lu was the techy person of the group, she was a bad cook, she was good with computers/electronics and came from a privileged upbringing. Cameron Diaz was the geeky/dorky one who was socially awkward, but also very book smart. Drew Barrymore was the hot headed, cocky one who was street smart and had a rough childhood, she also had bad taste in men
was about to say just this, the real Charlies Angels movies were so good, each character had their own distinguish traits and all of them came out funny and cool and relatable.
At least the Chad was great
Wade don’t forget Sam Rockwell amazing dancing scene..
I also love how well they written the male characters, compared to how one dimensional they make them now in any female lead action story nowadays. Lucy Lu's father was unconditionally supportive of her despite the hilarious misunderstandings of her line of "work," the Bosley's were pretty solid, with Murray's being a funny goofball but still got things done, and Mac's reluctant attitude on these high stakes missions but knowing he wouldn't let anyone hurt the Angels.
Even as a kid when Bosley went from a *white* male to a *black* male, I didn't even question it because the characters were just so well done. I didn't need to be painfully struck over the head that a character has this obvious trait like _this_ Charlie's Angels did.
And that's why those movies were awesome.

I'd just like to shout out the horror/thriller movie "The Descent", which has an all female main cast, who are depicted as normal people with flaws and are shown as badass and intelligent protagonists without reminding us that they're, in fact, females.
Good call. In that film the fact that the leads are all female doesn't feel forced - it feels as natural as, say, the leads in "Deliverance" being a group of male friends. And, as you say, they're not presented as being impossibly perfect, and they don't feel the need to constantly remind the audience that they're women. It's really not so difficult to do female-led movies right - you just need to NOT add more gender-politics than is absolutely necessary to the plot.

The thing that made the 2000s Angels good is that the three ladies had a personality and “vibe”.
Lucy was the hot Asian who was smart and used martial arts, Cameron was quirky and awkward but bubbly and was a more technical fighter, Drew was blunt and guy-crazy and was a street brawler.
They each fit well into their respective styles and roles and it worked. They felt like they were good coworkers but also good friends. And the men weren’t this misandrist take on men. Bosley (both Bill and Bernie) felt like competent and fun bosses. Jason had the charm that Joey from Friends did (obviously same actor). Seeing how one's strength can come in when another character falls short, or how even though they work together they don't always get along because their viewpoints vary. This movie seemed to try to "balance" all three girls out because they don't want one strength, like chemistry smarts, to be nitpicked as a "less cool" ability than being competent in combat. The word empowerment in itself is the first mistake when making a character. Superman and Batman did not exist to "empower" anyone, nor did Harry Potter or Obi-wan Kenobi. Arya stark was not, nor were Hermoine Granger, Lara Croft, or Princess Leia created for that purpose. Exactly. Ocean's movies were about a group of man that were good at what they were doing, stealing, planning the shit out of it, bring gimmicks, tricks and tools on the table to carefully execute said plan. But they also, had a human side, a side that showed us how fragile these men were despite the fact that they were arguably the best on the business.

Ocean's movies are the type of movies you have on the background while you cook or do your taxes or some shit, it has a good premise, reachable characters, some positive moral values despite they were thieves and antagonists that fit on the plot.
The females' ocean movie just grabs 2 female characters to be similar to Clooney's and Brad Pitt's characters and the rest are fillers that I bet they were made on the spot, after they cast all the female leads.

Also the concept of "alpha" in a nutshell.
It's all just projection. These types are constantly complaining about "toxic masculinity," but their portrayals of women end up mimicking the very thing they complain about. The action movies of the 80s had more self-awareness.
It's a lot easier to assume that anything these people are accusing their enemies of, is exactly what they're doing, because that's how it typically turns out.
That’s because feminists are the most shallow people out there.

Both original angels here can fight because IT IS THEIR JOB, they were selected on this basis and trained to be able to do it. As well as being smart is obviously required for this job.
Gerry C the author of the comment never said that mentioned traits of MCU characters are the only traits they have. What was written is just illustrates that the fact that several characters have some similar traits (“brave” and “heroic”) doesn’t mean we can’t tell them apart.
Thats why when in the video it is said “how are we supposed to tell them apart if they are all smart and bad ass????” it makes no more sense than saying “how are we supposed to tell mcu characters apart if they all are brave and heroic????”
of course individualities of mcu characters are very well shown while CA individualities are shown poorly, and this is the problem, not that all of them are smart and can fight - but for some reason video keeps repeating that the problem is that if all 3 characters can both fight and are smart, then viewers can’t tell them apart 🤷♀️
@@anastasiablazhenova3692 I agree with what you're saying; it's quite a black and white statement in the video to say "we can't tell them apart" just because they share character traits. I think the core idea we're all digging at is this: There's nothing wrong with Charlie's Angels being an in-your-face female lead story, but the writers had the opportunity to build three very unique characters, but they just made one character three times.
In real life (and in engaging, relatable writing) each of these characters would have clear strengths and weaknesses which compliment each other. It would have opened the door to messages about supporting and uplifting your fellow woman, your weakness is someone else's strength, a group is greater than the sum of its parts, etc.
Instead they went with the image of three intelligent, athletic, witty, funny and strong leads who can each independently breeze through any obstacle in their way because "of course we can...and you can too!"
The message is great and we need more of it, but this movie became a slave to its message and robbed itself in order to serve it.
I agree with what your saying but captain marvel had good roles from males too. And in endgame it didn’t feel like she was the only one to contribute in the fight
To be fair, Captain Marvel was seriously scarred and conflicted, throwing up a barely convincing façade of "I can manage, all's good and well". Brie got a lot of flack, but I could identify with her and I found her acting good. I didn't look too much into all the drama, I just watched the movie.
I don’t have a problem with strong characters. My biggest problem is that they cannot do this without degrading, mocking, and making others feel inferior. It comes off as arrogance.
I like charlie's angel with drew, lucy, and cameron.
Tbh that was more of a comedy than an action movie so they could hide any mistakes they made
Classic!
Henry McCoy are u saying this new one has more action than old one ? Coz last time I checked Lucy actually knows martial arts. And it has few memorable moments like the barracuda sassy leather teacher scene 🤣
Henry McCoy no u dumb
The fact that I never even heard there was a 2019 Charlie's Angels movie speaks to how it was going to fail no matter what. I'll stick with the 1999 one thx.
Not to mention they use Kristen Stewart who is basically a man as one of the angels. They hate men but cast someone who wants to be a man so bad
Ripley in Alien (Sigourney Weaver's character) was originally written gender neutral so they could audition BOTH men and women for the role. Sigourney gave the best audition and that's why they went with her, creating one of the most iconic action stars of all time. There was no ''gender agenda'' with the writing or casting, it was simply a very talented individual playing a well written character and that's what made it successful.
Didn't know that (about Weaver), thanks for sharing.
Not quite true. Ripley was a man in the script but then someone in the team asked Ridley if it was super important if Ripley was a guy and he said no. The intention was that Ripley was going to be a male, after meeting Weaver they gave the role to her and I guess Weaver gave the role her own spin after that. But Ripley is an icon!
Now imagine if someone made the opposite movie, where men are portrayed as saints and women as devilspawn. Imagine how many women would watch and like this movie...
Plot twist: if the Male characters are hot, women would support the movie nonetheless. Even more so if the characters have solid relationships with each other. In short, it's not the gender that matters.
Don't need a movie for that, just go to 4chan or any incel page
@@thegreyeyedcat9142 Shut up and take my like, you genius.
We don’t need to imagine. We already have feminists screeching about how women are potrayed in games and movies
I doubt even men would watch and like this movie. Nah we guys always wanna beat up bad guys, and we wanna see that shit too.
I think the perfect example of how to make the perfect movie like this is the 1990 film La Femme Nikita. It really is a masterpiece and would be a fantastic film for you to do a video on.
Being a Chemical engineer I found this extra cringey

Do you want good films with strong Female lead character? Go watch any of Hayao Miyazaki's films! He really knows how to write a good aspiring Female protagonist
Agreed
Reading the comments here it proof that Elizabeth Banks' version of Charlie's Angels has displeased both males and females. Being a woman also, I'm looking for a sense of balance between genders in movies and tv series. That both males and females can work together as well as be enemies of each other. In this movie it makes out the female are the heroes and the male are the enemies. Clearly Elizabeth Banks has some serious trust issues and shouldn't bring them into a production.
This one just looked so bland and plain. The 2000s Charlie’s Angel’s was slapstick and corny, and the director knew it and owned it, making it stand out. Each of the characters had their own backstory and personality that allows them to work best as a team. This one was just so...boring looking.
The dialogue in Charlie's angels 2 was so corny that I knew it word for word, I haven't even watched this movie and I'm already bored.
Kumi dude the joker 2000 CA is so funny
And there were also women as bad guys.
"Women can do anything": yes
"Women can do everything": no
No one can do everything, not even men, and if they can then there is a very good explanation or it's just a bad movie.
I would like to use John Wick as an example.
He seems perfect in every aspect of the film but he's not. He's extremely good and well-trained soldier/hitman but anything than that he's sub par. And even while fighting he still takes damage and has scars from his previous fights.
He is not so savvy, he is very blunt with his interactions with others. He just has a lot of fighting experience and he isn't just running guns blazing without a care in the world. He could die if an enemy got lucky but Wick makes it damn sure the enemy won't have the chance to get lucky.
Wick is also nothing without his safety net.
Exactly why people find it so hard to understand this
@@mr.paperbag771 and thats exactly why john wick is So good , i won't be suprised if someone like him existed in real life
Only Batman can do everything

It's fascinating how overly emphasized gender obsession movies tends to fail spectacularly in the box office and the ones to blame are always the male audience ignoring(?) them
It’s kinda like the new Star Wars Rey thing where she never struggles and it makes the story boring
Or mera
Or like Captain Marvel.
Or Birds of Prey.
Where we are supposed to like characters because they are the protagonists, but that are bland and actually behaving obnoxiously, unlikeable, weak or even plain evil.
Rey is good character. And I am pretty sure that it was male all boys that hate on her were going to like him
@@darinanikolova4626 Rey is interesting in TFA. Then gets Mary Sued in TLJ and made insignificant (or ridiculed) in TRoS.
If you like her, fine. The character, however, suffered as heavily from the lack of creative direction as did the whole trilogy. And that really isn't a male/female thing. Finn suffered even more.
My favorite young female Star Wars fan prefers Ahsoka Tano to Rey any time of the day.
Rey's a pretty cool guy. It flaps its vagina and doesn't afraid or anything.
Honestly the movie was really bad.. It bored me.. And its not true that men don't support female action movie.. Every demographic loved the Cameron diaz Charlie's angels. Wonder Woman was so great because the plot was excellent.. Alot of writers fail to realize that they can't make their movie too gender obsessed and one sided it just make for a boring time at the theater. King Author legend of the sword flopped for the same reasons it was too male oriented
Okay so to start I'm not trying to come off as rude(that's the problem with typing you can't really hear if they're trying to be a dick or just talking so had to throw that out there). So firstly, I love King Arthur just because I liked the plot and character development. Was it mainly male sided? Yeah I probably would've liked to see more women fighting too instead of just that sorcerer girl. Woulve made it better but I still liked it and everyone is entitled to their own opinion so I get why you didn't like it. But secondly Wonder Woman was fucking amazing. I loved that movie. I can't wait for the next one! Last of all, I remember watching the ORIGINAL Charlie's Angels show. Like sorta muffled sound original. My dad and I used to love watching that and other classics. I saw the movies and I loved those too, they made me laugh my ass off and honestly they were pretty badass. This new one however, I knew wasn't going to go well after they said "This movie is for women" and I just sat there looking at my phone screen like "What the fuck?" I had seen the movie on the "What's Coming Out This Year?" List and got excited until I saw that comment. Then I watched the trailer and I knew this would flop. Long story short, thank you for helping me not waste my time watching this movie. Also sorry this comment is so long
Anyone who says men don’t support a female led action movie is deluded.
Just look at the Alien franchise.
The sequel Aliens is a particularly good example of a movie that empowers women.
Ripley’s feminine nature is emphasized a number of times, especially in comparison to the exaggerated masculinity of the marines (including the female marine).
And yet despite this, Ripley grows to be the toughest, most bad-ass of all the characters.
In fact, it’s the “protective mother” aspect of her character that makes her transformation into an unstoppable warrior so believable and relatable.
And as for male support?
Well let’s put it this way; does anyone believe it was female fans that made it the blockbuster franchise it has become?
Kinda reminds me of learning why Disney changed the title from "Rapunzel" to "Tangled" and included Flynn on the poster. People generally like seeing characters they can instantly relate to, and if every character who looks like you is deemed "the bad guy", "deserves bad things" or nonexistent, then it's going to be hard for you to get into it.
Also, anytime a creator claims if their work fails, it's the audience's fault, you know it's going to be shit.
Word. King Arthur for me sucked. Not because it was filled with men??
Any other ensemble action movie: "We're putting together a crack team of special operatives. First, there's Brick Fistington, who can punch your soul right out of your body. Here's Gun Shootman, who's mastered every firearm. Here's Sneaky Thiefberg, who can slip past any defense unnoticed. Here's Billard Nyel, the Science Gent. He can turn everything in your refrigerator into an explosive."
Feminist Charlies' Angels: "Here's Girl A, B and C. They can all do everything equally so they're completely interchangeable and forgettable. Girl power."
This is just hilarious.
Underrated comment
Byllard Nyle😂
Billard Nyel sounds like a great name if Bill became a hitman
When they're all dressed alike and looking in the mirror, I, literally, couldn't tell which was was Kristen Stewart.
That's how bland they all are.
