I had moderate inflammation of my vocal cords a few months ago. I'll be 66yo in January 2025. The ENT thought it was reflux and prescribed a PPI. I took it for a week and then watched some UA-cam videos talking about a cause could be lower production of acid, not too much, and suggested organic apple cider vinegar with "mother". Every time I thought I felt reflux, I took a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and it seems to have worked for me. I also became conscious of how soon before bedtime I ate and made sure I was up for at least a couple of hours before I went to bed. My reflux seems to have just about disappeared and my vocal cords have healed. It's worth a try. I've had bad reflux issues off and on since my 40s, had it under control, but I'm weird in that plain water has triggered bad reflux, but not seltzer. Someone suggested temperature, so I also stopped drinking cold water and just drank room temperature water. That also seems to have helped.

@AliceR27. Thank you for your comment. I had cysts on my vocal cords and had them surgically removed twice. The ENT put me on a PPI and I would like to get off them. I have read about apple cider vinegar with the mother, bought it, but never tried it. I just had some acid reflux like symptoms this weekend while taking the PPIs. I think I will try the ACV with the mother and see what happens. Had not heard about cold drinks triggering it but I do like cold drinks. Thanks again!

@timmartin4952 Everything is worth a try just to see if it works. I started magnesium recently for sleep. Didn't help my sleep, but burning on bottom of my feet at night has almost disappeared.

When I worked for hospitals, I couldn't believe how many older adults were on PPIs. Then, they began prescribing for infants! I couldn't imagine the long-term effects on babies whose bodies are still developing. I argued with a GI doctor about nutritional deficiencies. He assured me they were fine. Right!!!

Omeprazole can cause a GI bleed. I had been on Omeprazole for many years. My hemoglobin started to go down. My doctor, who had prescribed it, said that sometimes it can cause a GI bleed. I stopped taking it & my next blood tests showed my hemoglobin was back within normal limits. Now I use ACV which works great. Wish I had known about it in the beginning.

He is absolutely right. I took PPI for years. Protonix to be exact. Got off of them had worse reflux than initially for about three weeks. Once I got past that I started taking magnesium and aloe vera juice, and haven’t had any issues since. Now I’ll get heartburn every once in a while like he said if I eat red sauce or I eat something really late. But I haven’t taken Protonix in over a year. The magnesium in aloe vera have worked very well. Great info. ❤

How did you know you had low stomach acid? I've done the bicarb soda burp test which suggests I do, but two GI doctors have told me I must have high stomach acid which has caused my GERD.

I tried that the other day.. something else must have been wrong, since I felt the GERD especially strong not long after. I used Pepto B. to reduce the symptoms, but that didn't really address the root cause that time. I think I've had ACV help in the past.

    - Get a fecal test done to determine the state of your stomach and intestinal biome. I did and found my system so out of wack I had excess yeast in the absence of good bacteria . After short bout on antibiotics to kill yeast then a regiment of prebiotics and probiotics, my stomach is feeling great. No PPI’s after 20 yrs being on them. Now I just limit sugar and alcohol use to keep things in balance.

Radishes. My dad ate 2-3 radishes after dinner every night. He'd burp, and his heartburn would be gone.
I have a hiatal hernia. I do the samething. It works! I tell people all the time and they look at me like I am crazy. But they try it and it works. So what do you have to loose in trying Radishes? They are inexpensive to by and have other nutrients your body needs.

Dr. Human, you are one of the greatest doctors out there whom I trust and follow their advice. The question that arises in this regard is what if someone has a hiatal hernia which requires them to use anti-reflux meds?. From my experience, a procedure to fix the hernia is the wisest decision otherwise this person will have to be on ppi's and h2 blockers for the rest of their lives. These side effects are nasty and should be avoided at all costs. Years ago, my doctor advised me to stay on these meds for my entire life which does not sound to be logical or healthy. Now, I only use them occasionally with a strong intent to perform a TIF or a Nissen Fundoplication procedure soon. Thank you Doc. You are enlightening the world with your priceless medical advice. ❤❤❤

Fatty foods do not cause weakening of the valve. It's fats and carbs together being consumed through a process called the randle cycle. Also any chronic inflammation triggers valve weakening.

Maybe you actually needed another procedure called Nissen Fundoplication, which is a more precise procedure. Nissen Fundoplication is performed when the lower esophageal sphincter(LES) needs more strengthening.

  • @MarkCooperMD
    @MarkCooperMD 18 днів тому +2

The research he suggests needs to be done was actually already done. Most of these risks were long ago disproven. The risk for pneumonia is primarily in older people who have aspiration. This doesn’t apply to most viewers. There’s not much reason to be scared of these meds to make an interesting video. So it’s too bad to see him resort to scare tactics
The simple fact is most digestion and absorption takes place at non acidic levels. Your GI tract has many more tricks to absorb food and fend off unwanted bacteria than stomach acid.
The big reason to not take a PPI long term is that diet changes can reduce many people’s symptoms. If you can control your symptoms with a better diet you gain a lot more.
In the short term if you have heartburn then enjoy some relief with a PPI. But also do the work of changing your diet, how and when you eat, and throw away cigarettes and alcohol.

Thanks for this Video Dr. Hyman!
Your warning about PPI risks brings important attention to a commonly overlooked problem. While these medications provide quick relief, their long-term use can lead to serious issues like poor nutrient absorption and gut health problems. It's concerning that many people take these drugs for years without knowing the potential risks to their brain health and overall wellness.
Your focus on natural solutions through lifestyle changes and herbal remedies offers a safer, more sustainable approach to managing acid reflux. By addressing the root causes rather than just masking symptoms, people can find lasting relief without the risks of long-term medication use.

Sometimes it gets better but then it flares again. Nobody knows how to treat "Covid related GERD". I also tried cutting out gluten and still have problems after antibody to gluten test was positive. It is a mystery, sometimes but only temporary help is Rolaids, tums, and sometimes H2 blockers.

I switched to a pescatarian diet and started eating only in an 8 hr window/16 hr fast after they found a suspicious polyp after a colonoscopy. It turned out to be okay but switching to that diet helped. I was eating more foods with lentils and/or chickpeas and using spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, and ginger. If it calls for chili peppers or flakes I don't put them in. I now only take omeprazole if I have a coffee and it seems to be causing too much acid. I will also eat candied ginger instead of the omeprazole. Ginger tea is also very effective. After my last colonoscopy, my doc said, whatever you're doing keep doing it! See you in 2yrs! I hope this helps.😊

It depends on where you live I think. I watched a video of Molly Pelletier where she recommends several natural supplements. Also mastic gum. She has a list in the video description of the supplements that can help with gerd and lpr. I think that you can find the brand that she recommends there.
I live in the Netherlands and can only get what is available in Europe.

Hello Dr. Mark Hyman, are you going to work with RFK to help make american people healthy again? I think most American people prefer to see functional doctors or holistic doctors. Is there a way that functional doctors can accept health insurance?

I am taking 40mg of Essomeprozole od I have heartburn from a hiatal hernia. That is the only reason most people take ppi’s. What alternative do I have if I don’t take it I will risk getting Barrets esophagus. What is your advice about a hiatal hernia and getting of PPl’s.
