RARE Marvin Gaye LOST and HONEST 1983 Interview...Talks About DEPRESSION and MOTOWN!

- Assigned to CBS's Columbia subsidiary, Gaye worked on his first post-Motown album titled Midnight Love. The first single, "Sexual Healing" which was written and recorded in Ostend in his apartment, was released on September 30, 1982, and became Gaye's biggest career hit, spending a record ten weeks at No. 1 on the Hot Black Singles chart, becoming the biggest R&B hit of the 1980s according to Billboard stats. The success later translated to the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1983 where it peaked at No. 3, while the record reached international success, reaching the top spot in New Zealand and Canada and reaching the top ten on the United Kingdom's OCC singles chart, later selling over two million copies in the U.S. alone, becoming Gaye's most successful single to date. The video for the song was shot at Ostend's Casino-Kursaal.
Sexual Healing won Gaye his first two Grammy Awards including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, in February 1983, and also won Gaye an American Music Award in the R&B-soul category. People magazine called it "America's hottest musical turn-on since Olivia Newton-John demanded we get Physical." Midnight Love was released to stores a day after the single's release, and was equally successful, peaking at the top ten of the Billboard 200 and becoming Gaye's eighth No. 1 album on the Top Black Albums chart, eventually selling over six million copies worldwide, three million alone in the U.S.
I don't make records for pleasure. I did when I was a younger artist, but I don't today. I record so that I can feed people what they need, what they feel. Hopefully, I record so that I can help someone overcome a bad time.
- NME - December 1982[94]
On February 13, 1983, Gaye sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the NBA All-Star Game at The Forum in Inglewood, California-accompanied by Gordon Banks, who played the studio tape from the stands. The following month, Gaye performed at the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever special. This and a May appearance on Soul Train (his third appearance on the show) became Gaye's final television performances. Gaye embarked on his final concert tour, titled the Sexual Healing Tour, on April 18, 1983, in San Diego. The tour ended on August 14, 1983 at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, California but was plagued by cocaine-triggered paranoia and illness. Following the concert's end, he moved into his parents' house in Los Angeles. In early 1984, Midnight Love was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Male R&B Vocal Performance category, his 12th and final nomination. - Розваги
When he said my depression comes from the empathy that I have for humanity my emotions.... mmm who else felt that?
Think about that ever since I heard him say it..

Marvin suffered from 'existential' depression. This is the empathy for the world Marvin speaks of. There is no pill for that. Help comes only from the Spirit which we all are. Many know this depression. Most don't.
yes and wish i knew this man but he was before my time but really an inspirational man he will not be forgotten RIP Marvin Gaye
I 100% know this.
Yep me too
How can many people know something that most don't? That makes no sense
@@jack2957 it's not difficult to understand. One's level of awareness must be substantial enough to speak of one's Spiritual nature. I suggest that you Google existential depression if you are open to information. You can't think this, so it probably can't make sense to you.
Marvin Gaye. A troubled genius. A walking contradiction. An icon and loner who never really found what he was looking for in life. And a life that ended much too soon. He is missed!
First and foremost he didn't get love and acceptance from his father.
You don't KNOW him or his heart

His speaking voice is just as amazing as his singing voice...Rest well King Marvin
sexy as hell. I'm on my 2nd viewing LOL
Marvin Gaye as a person was not a good guy, not a king. The dude got his wife’s 15 year old niece pregnant and abused his second wife. Not to mention he cheated on his first wife with his second wife. Not a good person at all. Made great music though.

He attempted suicide at least 3 times as far as the public goes. First time being in 1969. I was shocked to hear that because 1969 Marvin seemingly looked happy and had the entire future ahead of him. At the time his marriage was failing. Depression is something that always lingers, no matter how happy someone may seem. 😢
His speaking voice is totally different than I expected.
He reminds me of Ben Carson ironically enough
Yes, I’ve NEVER seen an interview, before this particular one, where he spoke like this. Hmmm, I think I prefer his “Acceptance Speeches ” and singing voices.
Same, it totally threw me off because his voice sounds so passionate and powerful on his records, I honestly didn't expect his talking voice to sound so laid back and soft. This shocked me more than hearing Matthew Bellamy of Muse speak for the first time in an interview.
Hes so soft spoken. My heart😭😭

He was so well spoken, self-reflective, introspective, articulate, open, vulnerable and sophisticated all at once... Classic interview - WOW!
Marvin Gaye was a beautiful soul. I’m 34 and recognize an empath when I see one. He was an empath that felt deeply for the world. Even though it seem like he couldn’t defeat his demons he still left a wonderful legacy. His music, his energy is timeless and he definitely made an impact. May his soul be at peace ❤

This is really amazing. How many of us have heard his speaking voice? We've heard him sing about love, sex, What's Going On?, and all the hits. Being 71, I*'ve heard his voice however he was not out there like a lot of performers and he rarely did interviews. The only time to really hear him speak was when we went to his shows.
Wow, never knew how deep Marvin's depression went. A very fragile, deep thinking and empathetic dude. A genius mind and good communicator hence the superb quality of his music.
Totally agree
The sexiest man ever graced music, and with voice and talent to match his looks.
I was born & raised in Detroit, Michigan. When I was 13 years of age, after hearing Marvin Gaye's music I had to meet him! (I had every album he ever made!) I did not know what a “Concert” was, but I snuck out the house, willing to bear the consequences of "getting in trouble" with my very strict Mother. I went to Cobo Hall, and somehow made it to the front row! Marvin Gaye held my hand and sang a part of "Distant Lover" to me. There will never be another Marvin Gaye! My apologies to my Dear Mother, because as a teen I must have played my Distant Lover LP one million times. Peace
That is one of the most beautiful things I ever heard. Marvin Gaye is my favorite artist.
Awesome story!
No one is mentioning the fact that this brother was very intelligent and articulate. As well as gifted and talented. A pure genius

Wow, this is probably the most honest interview I've ever heard by a musical artist.
"Gaye’s mother, Alberta Cooper Gay, spoke out a number of times about the harbored animosity Gay Sr. held for his son."
“My husband never wanted Marvin, and he never liked him,” Cooper revealed. “For some reason, he didn’t love Marvin, and what’s worse, he didn’t want me to love Marvin either. Marvin wasn’t very old before he understood that.”
Roots run deep.😢
We loved you Marvelous Marvin❤❤❤
Him..Richard Pryor …MJ…Marlon Brando all had this underlying tone of depression and sadness in their interviews…all tortured souls but made the best music
Good discernment, Prince, Andre 3K and a few others also had that. I believe that they wanted to help people but couldn't figure out how to do it.

he looks so exhausted from life it hurts my heart. I hope you’re resting easy Marvin ❤️

@daniel laurence it was MORE than just the drugs. The drugs were an escape. He first became depressed when his friend and co-singer Tammy Terrell died of cancer, he also suffered broken hearts from 2 marriages, and the state of the world depressed him.
So eloquent
Exhausted from staying up doing coke

I agree with you both. Mental health can be 1 of the hardest things to open up about, as we often think about judgement
I suffer badly from depression. I can honestly say i wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy

A lot of young men today need to hear him speak about it
Thoughtful, intelligent, warm, complex, honest, engaging, self-doubting, compassionate, humourous, articulate. Just some of the words you could use to describe Marvin Gaye. What a wonderful piece to watch. If only he could have believed in himself the way in which we, his fans did! Such an amazing talent and, a beautiful, sensitive human being. Had he not died so young, I could easily have seen him championing mental health awareness. At least we still have his music. RIP Marvin
What an absolutely lovely comment - so true in it's entirety. I think he was contrary, incredibly erudite and so frustratingly passive. Given all the circumstances, it's no wonder the drugs took hold - sheer escapism. Utterly heart-breaking - just a tortured soul.
He was considered the "Black Frank Sinatra" of his era. Your comments are spot-on!!!

Yes 💜
It's called kakane
That's what makes him a great artist. This is all intuitive.
I love how Marvin explains how he feels deeply about the world, which can lead to depression. I'm guessing he was an introvert. This is the first time I ever saw him interviewed. I danced to his songs in the clubs and loved his music, especially "What's Going On". He is such a soft-spoken man. Gentle. So insightful. A talent gone far too soon from gun violence.
It's not about guns, it's about violence. If there was no gun, he would have used a knife or club.
"gun Violence"? His own Father killed him. If he stabbed him, would it be "Knife violence"?
His intelligence is mind-blowing. He is a genius musically, intellectually etc. I could listen to him all day.
He said that the state of humanity was a source of his depression. I felt the same during that time frame, and since then. His song "What's Going On" evokes that feeling of melancholy. The 60's were wonderful and horrible at once. His music captured all of it.
He never needed awards.
RIP Marvin
Indeed his empathy for the world ran deep and it was too much at times
Still can't believe his father killed him smh
@@MacNif It's what he wanted, though.
During that time!!?? You honestly should listen to what's going on again and see if it still relates to today. That song should honestly be played to children in elementary schools.
He actually needed validation. Very much so. He knew his worth but couldn't focus because of his damaged ego and childhood traumas. This compounded with an inability to control his excesses was a hugely damaging combination.
He would probably be diagnosed with manic depression or bi-polar disorder nowadays. For these individuals dealing with real life is difficult in the extreme. The success comes with many caveats not fully expected by those with more stable beginnings. Marvin refused to be labelled or controlled by societal convention. He even stood up Princess Margaret at a concert in London to go powder his nose.
He was not wholly blameless in the matter of his own destruction.

Also read "Divided Soul" by David Ritz. Great read!
He was so right about the World being in a horrible place. He was insightful along with deep dysfunction . His openness about his depression & suicide attempt is remarkable. I admire his transparency.
The world still in a horrible place.
Actually the world is worst than ever I’m a 90’s kid and this artist was able to depict all the devastating things way back then which is even more apparent today! Rip Mr.Gaye the resurrection is soon to come.
A lot of artist were going through it. Donnie H. committed suicide right around this time a few years earlier.
It's just a negative vibe that has been passed and handed down through every generation......that most will grab like a baton to run to recycle. It's kind of crazy how easy it is for anyone that believes themselves to be depressed/chooses to exercise depression to gravitate towards harming and killing themselves.
It still is. And it will never change.
That voice. His intelligence. His thoughtfulness. A tremendous and powerful person. Wow. Thank you Mr. Gaye. 🙏🏾
Y'all have to remember he lost Tammi Terrell and he loved her DEEPLY they said his depression was awful after her death
There was more to his life than Tammi Terrell. He had whole wives he was dealing with. Tammi was a friend, and that touched him psychologically when she died, but there were more significant elements.
Marvin will never be replicated. His music gets inside- it isn't only beautiful it 'gets to you'. Somehow he knew how to do that, and he realized it. I know his 'habits' had a negative effect- but his soul will live forever. RIP Marvin- you're missed terribly
The way he takes sooo much accountability and recognizes his short comings. Admitting he is difficult to live with.
Not many people are ready to admit that they are imperfect.
I relate to Marvin. May he rest in peace
He knows his shortcomings, but continues the behavior anyway. That’s not accountability. Part of being accountable is solving how to correct the behavior. Being able to admit the shortfall doesn’t help anyone, not even him.
He loved emotional drama and would often sabotage his own happiness
Too bad a lot of women cant be self held accountable. But yes he did like the drama, yes there was a sense of arrogance yes he was a tortured Soul, sometimes self-inflicted. Some argue, he committed suicide by having his father kill him, he did give his father the gun.
Truth Indeed

Marvin was not accepting of the things that they wanted him to do at Motown.Story was that he and Barry had many heated arguments because of what he refused to do but Anna( his first wife) put the fire to his feet. If you notice in Anna's interview she said that they put up with a lot. They pampered Marvin a lot. If you read Jan's book she wrote about him being unpredictable. If he had commitments he would sometimes ignore them and not give a damn about how it would affect others involved. Marvin was free spirited and they expected conformity. This is a really sad and very haunting video of this legend. As some others have noted, his speaking voice was as incredible as his singing voice. RIP Marvin
This man and his music were the quintessential soul. The blessing and the curse, the tragedy and the eternal. His music hits deep in the lives of people born years after he left. His message resonates with the strange resemblances between our time and his, the weight of the issues. I'm too young to have lived in the same world he did, but I'm glad he's still relevant and potent in mine
Same here.
Candid, empathic, realist, intelligent 👌, creative, compassionate ♥️, grateful 🙏, self-analytical, sensitive, sensual, ....
He was deep, true artist with his thought perspective. 22:49 was an elaborate answer to a simple but loaded question. As someone who has mostly created in my youth and for my living, I feel what he was feeling. As a loner by choice as a kid I felt that, and how it allows me to sustain as an adult now with a family but still comfortable with time alone. I really appreciate this interview being captured and now available to watch and learn more of him.
This man's music has meant so much to me throughout my life. I can't believe this is the first time I've seen hem speak. He's so intelligent, sensitive and forthright.
Totally agree
This is the first Marvin Gaye interview I’ve ever seen, thank you. 💀🔥💔
"In order for people to give you the kind of acceptance, prestige that they would like to have to talk about you, you have to sort of engage yourself in this material warfare. And I'm going to play the game..."
I love his voice and how he speaks.
He's so transparent.
He was such a sensitive soul. I’ve read that he never got over Tammi Terrell’s death, even though they were never romantic. The music they made together will live forever.
Great interview ! As an artist myself I understand/felt every word. His way of expressing his imperfections was flawless & his honesty was rare. A true artist. A true legend 🙏🏾
Can you believe the man won just one Grammy and it was his last hit.
2. And it “was” his last hit
Grammys literally don’t matter
He awarded for vocal performance on sexual healing
An elite artist always
acknowledges GOD mission
first middle last .. musical genius
The Sexual Healing instrumental won also. He has 2 grammys but I understand what you mean he only won for one song. Unbelievable the politics of that industry
This man is just FINE..TO GOD BE THE GLORY!.❤🌹
Yes lord he was so so fine!!
How dare you tell Marvin Gaye to put his cigarette out its a privilege to even be in this man's presence one of the best soul singers of his time he was a smooth dude God bless his soul 🙏
His most candid interview. Such a sweet and honest soul.
Powerful and heartwrenching... Also, the death of Tammi Terrell affected him very deeply. Both gone too soon. 💕
I think what's so awfully sad is that the man that killed him which was his father, was the man that controlled him all his life until he took his son's life, he was never freed or accepted by his father and it destroyed him mentally, emotionally.
I love the way he spoke about Depression at a time when it was like “you what?” R.I.p Marvin Gay
KILLED BY HIS OWN FATHER....WHAT A 'GREAT' STORY . LESSON: LEARN TO DIVORCE YOUR FAMILY IF THEY'RE TOXIC.
Hard To Believe It Will Be 40 Years Since We Lost This Great Person 👍, Still Sad 😢,May He R.I.P, Still Miss You Always 😢
His music lives on and on and on and on.....🙏💔💖😢
Wow he was so open and honest. Love his realness
The way he died, at the hands of his abusive father (who served no jail time) hurts my heart. It’s so wrong man. He was such a beautiful, gentle soul.
HE WAS SUPER VENTING. THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE FOR MEN TO WATCH & LEARN A LOT OF REPEATED MISTAKES THAT OFTEN HAPPEN IN MENS LIVES! MARVIN WAS VERY IN TUNED WITH HIMSELF & HONEST ABOUT HIS ART N HIMSELF
He was so handsome. ❤
Marvin was an enlightened being. To me he is a healer of great magnitude ....Bless him he lives on through his great artistry and amazing voice and truly gifted writing
‘Healer of great magnitude’ I totally agree. 🙌🏽
Being enlightened is not always easy
Pure genius. 1976 album "I Want You" is one of my fav of all times.
Mine too. ♥️
"I Want You" is a good album but it's pretty much a Leon Ware album featuring Marvin. For Me "What's Goin' On", "Let's Get It On" and "Midnight Love" are his masterpieces.
Also one of my favorites
I heard his actual i want you song quite later but that one is definitely in his top 5s
@@jonhank2884 Here My Dear was a masterpiece.
He was a very very charming man....his aura was everything
You're Missed 💜🙏🏽💜
Marvin Gaye touched my soul as a child of the 60’s . . .
Only love can conquer hate are prophetic words of God . . .
If a person has nothing but love in his heart but never finds out how or where to distribute his love to the world, he will kill himself in one way or another. Even when you listen to the song called starry starry night by don mclean, there is a lyric that says. "You took your life as lovers often do" referring to Vicent van Gogh. This song was also Tupac's favorite song. Poetry in motion!
I'm a mid 70s baby('74) and grew up on a STEADY DOSE of MG and Motown. I remember sitting at the dinner table and hearing it on the news playing...just sad and tragic, we all battle with demons within AND without, please work on healing and rectifying BOTH problematic issues...RIP MG
You should have been a Motown fan in the sixties. FAR superior to that crap they put out when they moved to Cali.
Name another artist who’s speaking voice is as melodic as his singing voice. None. Marvin was a genius. Listening to him in this interview was like he was preaching to my inner soul. Rest in Peace.
