People forget Jan was still a teen when Marvin courted her. Imagine being 16/17 and one of the most famous musicians wants you and you become his muse! @@christyjackson4835 it doesn't mean that he didn't love her. AND let's not forget how petty he was with, "Here My Dear". Masochistic Beauty is just the pain talking...... Marvin was simply an artist who couldn't come from any other place but one of truth---he was angry AF w/her and that's how he felt at the time. he's said in his other works that if she ever left him that he'd be heartbroken/devastated----i believe that losing her drove him over the edge.....he didn't last much longer past their relationship ending....
@@plmitch girl. Listen. Marvin used Jan. He used her and fell out of love. He fell out of love with life itself because he became an ADDICT and lost his passion to sing and create more music. Read 2 books: My Brother Marvin by his sister Zeola Gaye. And Divided Soul by David Ritz. Marvin beat Jan. He broke her ribs, turned her into an addict, and wanted her to fk other men. She refused to let him see his children in the days before he died and that also hurt him deeply. I have read so much and watched so many documentaries on MG. You are romanticizing his relationship with Jan. They were just people like you and me. Jan accepted my Facebook friend request years ago and we inboxed each other many a time through the years. She told me once that she was like any other woman in an abusive marriage -- that she was a "victim of domestic violence", her exact words. This woman was just a young girl at 17 with a superstar who introduced her to hard drugs, orgies, and his insanity. Jan had affairs with Rick James, Frankie Beverly, Teddy Pendergrass, and all kinds of other men because she and Marvin were in an open relationship and she was just as screwed up and promiscuous as he was. Some of your facts and statements are off. You are obviously a MG fan like me but you are perhaps younger than me and therefore not as wise or mature enough yet to see that this man tormented others, including Jan and including himself because of his own unhappiness and mental illness. He wanted to die because he hated himself. He hated his father. He wanted his father to kill him. Keep reading about him and unpeeling the layers of this onion. It's much deeper than Jan. It goes back to his childhood when he was beaten by his father and raped by his uncle at the age of 14. Y'all need to grow up. His story is about more than this one woman. He was not in love with her when he died. He hated her. He was paranoid. He tried to commit suicide multiple times. He beat his Father many a time prior to the day he was killed too. Jeez 🤦🏾♀️ it's so much you obviously don't know.
@@christyjackson4835 Nope.....I actually read ALL those books and i came to the exact same conclusions that you did. as far as me being young, i'm not really that either. i am from Detroit, MI and i had a family member who worked as a domestic for Anna (and Marvin) when they were married, so i know quite a bit about Marvin's life (in his 1st marriage) prior to him starting up with Jan. that being said, artists are different than other people----i am an artist myself and i understand how they view things. Jan can only tell you things from HER OWN point of view, but she can't give you perspective FROM the man who created---you have to listen to HIM for that. if you looked into the lives of MANY a creative, you would most likely find many things you would find displeasing, distasteful, sometimes even deplorable (as in this situation), but it's often times where creatives, "muse". WE ALL romanticize what it takes to get to the art we're consuming---and i think that's the greater message here. i loved Marvin as a CREATIVE, but i am NOT AT ALL romantic about anything having to do with his life....and i'm sure, through a lot of their experiences, abused people as well as their abusers (often the abusers were abused themselves, as in this case) would speak differently about what they thought, "love" was to them. as someone who has (and currently IS) studying human behavior (to work in the healing arts), i don't like to completely dismiss feelings and actions---it's better to dismantle and then process them in a healthy way....
Tammy Terrell was a gorgeous woman, with her beautiful skin and hair and a body to make any man sweat and want to chase her down the Motown hallways! Her voice was delicious, in my opinion, like butter, and perfectly tuned to sing with Marvin. What a great duo they would have been over the years...sad he died.
24pekanpie Lies. She told so many lies. Did she mention the part where she poisoned Marvin’s marijuana supply after she and her mom took out a $1 million life insurance policy on him . ??
I finished the audio book in 2-days. I feel Jan was very truthful and I wish she had narrated the audio book. It was so insightful. She did a fantastic job.
I read the book and I loved it! Show me a different side of Marvin Gaye, the human side. He suffered a great deal and mostly did it to himself. I assume he felt it would make him a greater artist and it did. He suffered for us.

Her book was pretty good. Read it in two nights. She was very candid and shocking. They both used drugs regularly, she gave him oral sex at 17 when he was 33, while her mother was in the next room. When she was pregnant with Nona, Marvin sent her to stay with his parents in Maryland while he went on tour. She talks about how creepy the dad was. First time she met Marvin's dad he was wearing a Tank top and women's wig? No one was allowed to enter his room. She talks about how Anna Gordy, Marvin's first wife confronted her, her affair with Teddy Pendergrass...so many good stories. Glad she wrote the book since she died a few years ago.
I met Jan back when we both lived in LA. She was working for a small film production company. We met there and about two weeks later she called and asked me on a date! We dated for about a year-friends for many more. Very surreal dating/being "part of" Marvin Gaye's life...I'm listening to this with my eyes closed-hearing Jan's voice as I have a thousand times on the phone...missing her.

@@leonardodalongisland wow, just wow. Your lies about Jan are something else. Did you date Halle Berry too? Let me guess: you impregnated Whitney Houston before she married Bobby Brown, huh?
First off, Janis is /was fine. Remember, Janis is damn near 60 years old. People age. Though she was the one-time wife of a mega-star, I don't feel that she, post-Marvin, necessarily lived that "Rodeo Drive" lifestyle of Hollywood once-royalty (facelifts, personal trainers, regular injections, personal chefs). She seems to be pretty natural in her physical appearance, and I'd like to repeat, she's almost 60 years old.
Yes she's VERY beautiful and to be honest she doesn't even look that seriously. Fame ain't for EVERYONE it requires entirely TOO much just like you said surgery this surgery that gotta fit in with the damn Hollywood women ect. She much rather stay out of the limelight and was a mother for her kids. I wouldn't have wanted my kids always in the spotlight either.
I think this a very good interview. Jan is a delightful and classy lady. She tells the story and is honest. For Marvin fans they may or may not like the truth. Despite it does not take away from Marvin Gaye's greatness as an artist. In fact it makes us see our idols as real human beings with flaws like we all have. Also she expresses how Marvin loved Tammi Terrell and was very depressed after her death. His love for Tammi was more like big brother/big sister from what Marvin's sister Zeola wrote in her book and also Tammi's biography by her sister Ludie. It must be very difficult for Jan and her life seeing Marvin Gaye was and is such an idol to fans. To keep her privacy and live her life without seeking the limelight shows she has written her book and told her story. The rest is history and Marvin 's legacy will continue. God Bless Jan for letting get to know Marvin and your life with him. Regards, Jay Balvin
I don't think she was beating around the bush at all. Usually when a person is being interviewed about a book, they don't want to reveal too much. They'll give you just enough, so you can buy the book.
I was so in love with Marvin when I was seventeen too. I had no idea how dark he was in the inside. I used to love his music, but had no idea his songs was a representation of how his life was. Through my journey in life, it has taught me to be aware of what I look at and listen to. I in no way want to enjoy or participate in something that someone creative because of their pain or evil darkness that lives inside of them. I wish that Marvin Gay would have stayed with God! I hope he found the peace that he longed for in the end! RIP Mr. Gaye!
I read the book.I loved it.Made you feel like you were right in the room with him. She didn't touch on his so called bi sexual relationships. She did refer to an incident when he told her that he was attracted to a movie star in passing but she never flat out revealed it .Quincy Jones was the one that referred to his association with Marlon Brando. Even though he had a serious drug issue he was highly intelligent and seemed very likable. Thank you Jan.
My question is, how does Quincy know 🤔???? And, why isn't Quincy speaking on his own liaisons with men. Marvin is not here to confirm or deny, so therefore, it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Jan and I were in a Mass Media class at Dorsey High school a group of talented 11th and 12th graders from L A city schools about 10 of us, it was a great. We would travel to meet at Beverly Hills High School . She went to L A High. We were friends, I was young, didn't realize when when she would walk with me across Dorsey High's campus that she liked blackness. We would be at my locker and the sisters would eyeball us. I didn't know how to take it...then, it wasn't cool, boy was I stupid. She married Marvin. I didn't/couldn't see that she was half black. The sweetest girl.
I think he admired and respected her, (Anna) more. He loved Jan just in a more twisted and sadistic way. She was too young and did not know what she was up against. She was seeking his approval and validaton; whereas Anna could take himor leave him, she chose herself rather to destruct with him. As the aying goes there is a danger in loving someone too much. On another note: "Anna 's Song" is out of this world, it speaks volumes. That entire "Here My Dear" album does.
She deserves to express in any way she chooses. She was one of Marvin's BIGGEST inspirations she should reap the rewards from whatever she writes.

I have a few favorites. I want to be where you are, come live with me angel, feel all my love inside, soon I'll be loving you again, and since I had you.
Kayanda Eddings amazing, i heard the extended version of i want to be where you are.. .awesome
I think "Since I Had You" from I Want You is my favorite. She was indeed his muse for the musical artwork.
He is a good interviewer.
Network news channels should take notes. He does not interrupt her every second. He asks questions and listens as she responds.
He has always been My favorite male singer of All time, but the more I learn about him , I learn that he was a very Sick, confused, craze individual, on a personal note, maybe that’s why he was sooo talented!
Indeed, he was a very troubled man.
Thank you for sharing.
I still remember vividly the day I heard Marvin Gaye died. I remember the room I was in, where I was standing, the time of day. It's like the shock of hearing it, that moment, I froze in time.
Marvin was a very gifted man, and left us with so many beautiful songs. I'm just thankful for the time, we had him, with us.✌
Beautiful and intelligent woman.
His music still rings in this world!
How lucky to have had someone like Marvin love you and make you his muse. Too bad the drugs and violence had to intervene.
...and the fact that he was a 33 year old married man.
Beautiful women glad she wrote the book. Sad what we go thru as people PTSD
I have always been obsessed with the relationship between Marvin and Janis.I have always listened to the I Want You album and just knew he was singing every word to her.Her book was amazing. However,I love and respect Anna Gordy-Gaye.
@@plmitchyou don't know that. None of us knows any of that shit. We weren't there.
@@christyjackson4835 I said, "I BELIEVE".
Come Live With Me Angel was the joint!!!
My favorite song of all songs!!
Yes indeed Marvin poured his soul in that entire album
Tammy Terrell was a gorgeous woman, with her beautiful skin and hair and a body to make any man sweat and want to chase her down the Motown hallways! Her voice was delicious, in my opinion, like butter, and perfectly tuned to sing with Marvin. What a great duo they would have been over the years...sad he died.
Tammy Terrell died first ..he could never get over her
@@dorothywilder5525 ua-cam.com/video/D4C5uLNj-jY/v-deo.html
David Ruffin put Tammy through SO MUCH physical abuse. There was a time when Tammy had a anuerisym in Marvin's arms during a show performance.
ITS ABOUT JANIS NOT TAMMY.
Beautiful lady! Courageous & loving. Very sad situation for she & her family.
I'm from DC and he is still a great man 💯
A lovely woman. Good interview.
Chile the tea in her audible book!!! ☕️ I listened to it on a trip and finished it in one day! Whew! Marvin was crazy as’f
Stella Hale She told so many lies
I read the book and I loved it! Show me a different side of Marvin Gaye, the human side. He suffered a great deal and mostly did it to himself. I assume he felt it would make him a greater artist and it did. He suffered for us.
I read the book divided soul it layed out his childhood abuse by his father, it was terrible.
Marvin Gaye never suffered for us. He was just a man who suffered like we all do. Don't try to make Marvin Gaye out to be a god.

Glad she wrote the book since she died a few years ago.
she looks Great!
jacqueline2027 And you do too!
Wow! How was she dating wise? Kind loving and etc?
Yeah, right. Did Madonna give you a reach around too?

Shonda Marquise Total page turner. I read it in two days!
Shonda Marquise but oh SO SAD!! MUSIC INDUSTRY and DRUGS
Marvin felt very strongly about Tammi Terrell he called her his sister not romantically that's how strong the relationship was
Tammy was involved in a horrific relationship with James Brown.
she is still so very beautiful and Nona Gaye is too
Thank you for sharing her story with us,
First off, Janis is /was fine.
NYC Songman That was sweet! So glad you said that. She is a beautiful woman...still. ❤️
NYC Songman
NYC Songman She was extremely gorgeous back in 70s and 80s
NYC Songman Yes sir. She still got
Exactly
+Brian Davis She still was vague when answering some direct questions, dude let her off the hook!
Brian Davis true
She's not all that cute .l wonder was she a vergin when she met Marvin
@@bashiradennis1258 According to her book, she was not a virgin.
RIP Mr. Gaye!

Loved the book it was great thanks Janis”
I dont know why but i really dig her..

Listening to the audio book now.
She went to Hamilton High and left school early. It's in the book.
Perfect in-depth interview BLACK MAN
I would like to see the Marvin Gaye bio picture made.
I know this interview is 3 years 0ld but she still looks Good
She was very pretty when she got with Marvin Gaye. I believed he loved Jan but loved Anna even more.
Well yeah...Anna turnt him out
I think he admired and respected her, (Anna) more.
I use to listen to Lenny Green's show every night on WBLS.
Jerry Lewis, Elvis Presley and Marvin Gaye all had young teen brides ....the controversial side of these greats.
