In a perfect coincidence of events, the day after I got to experience the new Corvette E-Ray on track, I was off to Spring Mountain for my Z06 Owner's track school! This meant I had a pretty cool opportunity to compare the two highest performance (current) iterations of the C8 Corvette. I know this is not a direct track comparison, but was still as close as possible at this point of the E-Ray's launch for me. Join me as I share some thoughts and fun on track with these high horsepower mid-engined Corvette supercars!

E-Ray w/a Magnuson Supercharger!!!
This is the one I've been waiting for. I live in Maine and put a lot of miles on my toys. The ability to drive late into the season and get reasonable mileage on road trips (i.e., used as a GT) matters to me.

Guarantee you rewatch this video in 5-10 years when the Z06 and it’s high revving naturally aspirated flat plane crank engine is long gone and there’s a more powerful, lighter, all around improved E-Ray with more battery capacity and you’ll be looking back wondering why anyone would have picked the E-Ray over the Z06. The E-Ray is a cool car but it’s just the beginning of a new era of cars that will be just like it.

All these car will be outdated in 5 to 10years. This is true for every car. Technology will alway improve and standards improve greatly. I am a drag racer and I remember in 2000 when a car running high 6 second 1/4mile was really saying something. Hell even a 1000hp was something out of this world for a street car. A 12second 1/4mile car was very fast. Now in 2024, 1000hp means nothing lol. There are family vehicles now that go from 0-60mph in less than 4seconds. There are just some things that are classic to have and it become less about speed and more about how the car makes you feel. Would take a 1969 Camaro SS over an E-ray anyday. Hell give me any 1960-1970 muscle car over any modern sports car mess. Those cars had character and value much more than the modern plastic car.😊
@@finwaydiddy1977 yeah, obviously the performance figures will continue to improve but the power sources won’t necessarily improve to real car enthusiasts. Ask a Ferrari aficionado what he’d rather have a 458 Speciale or a 296GTB and despite the 296 being able to destroy the 458 most will

Awesome video and overview comparison @EddieX! I totally see your points as the Z06 is so raw and visceral and such a race car experience which I absolutely love. Eray seems more geared for street comfort with the ability to drive in all weather scenarios. Being a car enthusiast, my vote all day is for the Z06! 💪🏻
I think you nailed the review. ERAY = DULL AND HEAVY. . If i want a well rounded car i will take my other vehicle. I want a sports car thats a BEAST!!! Z06 for the win!!
E-ray seems like the better car all around. I live in California, I think there is a company that can add like 50 hp without breaking the smog laws to the e-ray(but they charge way too much for it). I really like the silent mode/mpg. And I have seen stingrays that have Z07 wing and aftermarket ground effect, lip and canards that look Oem so if you really want, since the E-Ray has same body as Z06 you can just order it and have reputable shop or yourself install it.
Also has the carbon fiber wheel option. I think the ZR1 original Zora should have a beefed up Z06 engine + the battery and motor of the E-Ray. Having that awd traction power and torque out of turns would be insane.
Great reviews as usual. I notice you had the tension/twilight blue interior in all your test cars. Did that just happen or did you get to choose? Even though the carbon fiber console looks cool in the test cars, I prefer the light blue console like our cars have, especially with the blue interior.
I think 3 of the E-Rays at the track had that blue interior, so that was a coincidence. At Spring Mountain there was a Rapid Blue over blue Z06 which was almost identical to my personal car so I went for that one haha! And yes, I didn't do carbon interior as I also prefer the blue leather!

Hey Eddie, thanks for the video. You mention the sf90 being a beast in acceleration, but no emotion… you don’t feel anything afterwards. Is that what the e-ray is more like? I have a z06 and I am thinking of getting an e-ray as well as I live in Idaho and could use the AWD. Thank you kindly!
Good job on this. I currently track my base C8 but considering upgrading in the future and it seems like the Z06 is the clear winner at this point for track use.
I don’t do track days and live in the Pacific Northwest so e-ray for me.

Idc what anyone says about the e ray, I own a c6 grand sport that I think is the coolest car ever, only other corvette I’d get is a any c4 cause those are the best looking imo. Maybe bc C6 came out when I graduated high school, c4 came out when I was born ..but anyway, I would do terrible, illegal things for a z06 of any gen but they never seemed to be something I could drive anywhere besides the freeway. but I’m starting to think I’d take the e-ray instead bc of the low end torque, and its a little different. Love how Chevy is making foreign companies sweat with what they’ve been able to accomplish and add to the C8. Plus the e ray has the targa so yea lol

E Ray for my first corvette when I can. When the La Ferrari came out they went like hot cakes and they only made so many. Makes me wonder how many GM will make of the E Ray? Just sayin if they would have a limited number then I think they would all be snatched up!

If I had money to burn I would get the ERAY Corvette I would also have the Z06 I would take the motor out of the Z06 and put it into the ERay Now we are talking speed fantastic sound from the flat plane crank motor that tops out at almost eight grand

please let me know if you would interested in testing the C8 with the Speedway Composites Chassis Strut X Brace, it should cut ~1% off your lap times and make the car even easier to drive hard due to the 8+% stiffer Chassis.

That E-Ray is a beast off the line. But that Z06 screams like a mofo!!
Still patiently waiting for a real race on track between a Z06 and an Eray. I'm not saying I would favor one over the other, and anyone could make a "comment" as if they knew. But they just can't know yet. As you said, "I love the sound this Z06 makes, nothing like it" and you also said "Right about here, the Z06 does not have the same torque as the Eray" When you say torque, I can only assume you mean acceleration. And "the front wheel drive pulls you out of the corners" and I'm assuming you mean vs. catching up after loose rear end in the Z06. Correct me if I am wrong. And also in your opinion, if the Eray is left on "Charge +" it does loose about 2 to 3 percent performance after a lap or two. Would that 2 to 3 percent loose enough performance for what it earns by the acceleration and cornering advantage?

GM has said multiple times the Z06 has superior lap times in every track /scenario
They are both nice, but if I had an unlimited budget, I'd buy a GT3 Touring with a 6-speed manual.
At the same price point, I'll take the Z06 because it's the best track car _money can buy. If they took like 40k off the price, I'd say Eray. I drive, at the track, switch back canyon roads and Interstate. In those scenarios the Z06 at the same price point rules. In town light to light isnt much a driving experience as much as its bragging rights. At that Eray price point you're paying a lot to go fast light to light but be inferior to Z06 in a true driving experience situation.
What is the reliability of that electric motor and system?
The C8 Z07 with CF rims and Cup2R (which have a weekend life) has a 2:38.6 laptime @ VIR. Eddie what is your guess the CF & Cup2R tires vs std rims & Mich 4S? 1 second?
Honestly I don't have the knowledge to even guess at the kind of deficit. I imagine it would be a decent amount given how ridiculously sticky the Cup 2Rs are in their optimum window.
How about an Eray with a borla attak exhaust? Would you consider the Eray a closer comparison with that exhaust?
While that would sound better it wouldn’t change the experience that much, still fundamentally different feeling engine/powertrains. Completely different intents and personalities.
I'd probably get the regular C8 as opposed to the E Ray if I planned on owning it for awhile. The E ray will most likely develop significant issues after a few years
I own a c6 z06 I bought brand new that i barely drive after buying my 07 s65 amg, i think if i bought another vette id get the e ray, id rather have the extra comfort

My question is if the e ray had the z07 tires on. Would it beat the standard z06 on the track. Because TIRES matter like crazy on the track!
That would be interesting. I’m not sure if the weight penalty would be offset by the awd and torque. It may depend on the kind of track layout.
@@EddieX like you said it’s just a different way that you have to drive it than the rwd cars. I mean look at the nismo gtr, those weigh 200 pounds more than the c8 z06 and 400 pounds more than the previous generation c7 z06. Yet those handle well just tend to have more understeer, just a different style of setting quick lap times. I feel like AWD style is similar to motorcycles, they get out of the hole quicker but don’t trap as high in mid corner, you feel the understeer more with the awd.
I am not a track expert but have poured 30 k into converting my gt86 into a race car and yes! Get the sport tune suspension with the pilot sport 4S tires and yes a track suspension tune with cup2R tires and carbon fiber wheels is the secret sauce answer for The E Ray and all ground effects package get.

@@JerryCecco Unsure what the full weight with fluids has been quoted at, I was told 2-300 lbs more than Z06. One of the magazines may have weighed one already. I think it's 41/59 F/R weight distribution, which is essentially the same as regular C8.

Old school and not into EV's at all. There's more to it than just acceleration. Whoever worked on combustion engines, tuned cars and have been into racing knows what I am talking about. Watch Formula-e. OMG. Go to a car meeting. There's the "old", exciting, with a story and history cars. And there's the Tesla fanboys. All the same models in just different colors. Maybe one guy wanted to be different. He put a bumper sticker. LOL
Eray is heavy slower and will eat tires faster than the zo6.
Eray is faster in a straight line and won’t kill tires as fast cause awd 🤷♂️ z06 is more nimble and sounds better
@@DriverJ-Nthat’s unfortunately not how it works, just because the tires aren’t spinning doesn’t have anything to do with how they will wear in a track setting. 300 more pounds is a lot of weight and although it wouldn’t be a catastrophic effect to additional tire wear it would certainly punish the outside edges far more after many laps
I don't think so. ERay is standard with all season, longer life rubber while Z06 choices are Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or Sport Cup 2s. Both are summer tires that are softer than the all seasons on ERay

lol.. I dont think many reviewers go all out on a new car and in many cases on a track they never have been on.. and many dont race cars. He did great and was very fair. Im buying an E-ray and completely know many that hate the idea of even having an E-ray. To me its exactly the everything vett I was hoping for. Eddie you and another reviewer talked about the charge +.. Did GM map more power when its used? I thought the charge + was to max it out only, but I would assume the power it puts out would be the same from 100% to 70 or do they very the HP at different levels?

the e ray is pretty much a Prius lol, the e ray should of never existed.
