Micka, I was thinking of you sir when I made this adjustment. And thought I would pass it on . I used the smaller scotty clips , and for the most part they worked ok , but I found with current and snags they released more than I would like. I switched to the 1177 clips the large ones. New subscriber and really enjoying your channel. Great tutorial on making planer boards. I’ve done similar to you but used the material from a cheap set of clipboards from Walmart and pool noodle for the floats. They worked for 3 years without issue until I stepped on one one day. I’ve since made another set using aluminum from a cooking tray also from Walmart. Haven’t had them in the water yet.
They look great, especially in the water. A few ideas for you… 1) they sell 1/4-20 aluminum all thread, I didn’t bother to check the price difference, but it’s pretty cheap… if you’re putting heat shrink on it anyway the full length thread won’t matter. 2) you can make a drill “jig“ for the pilot hole with a nut (stainless, harder the better), maybe a “coupler” cut to length to get the same distance from the end, screw it on and drill through it, then smooth the end threads on your sander, or heat shrink to the end. 3) instead of using vice grips to hold to tighten the nut, put a pick or drill bit through the hole to avoid scarring and burrs (mute point if you use heat shrink to the end). 4) your DIY videos are great, consider affiliate links to the products you use.
Thank you for that. Really great ideas and yeah I'm gonna go back and link all the stuff I use. It's funny you mentioned the pick tho hold the rod. I started doing that right after that video. But I do thank you for your great ideas.

Once I rehab my old Clearboards im gonna make my own set like you. Great content man thanks!
Great video! If you sand the shiny finish off those foam boards, then coat them with water based polyurethane (polycrylic) it will harden them up significantly. I've done that and then painted them. Haven't tried the duct tape but will try it on my next set of planers and see if there's any difference in hardness of the foamboard. And speaking of polycrylic for anyone interested, it makes a great sealant for cork rod handles.

I watched the last video you made & Those planer boards you made look like, you now used metal ( aluminum ) instead of Plexi glass ? or is it just due to the sun? I was going to make some up here come winter time.
I work at a Hospital in Maintenance and we used 1/4" Lexan during Covid so I have plenty of scraps to make planer boards. Try WD40 on your threes when using the Die.
Yeah I make them out of aluminum now. After I posted thus video had alot of good comments that were suggesting that I try aluminum. So I did and was able to start making them that way.
Instead of plexi glass, use lexan of the same thickness. It is a little more expensive but you will not break it. @mickaburkhart14 ok just curious.
I just seen a camo boat with catfish poles in the back and thought it was. I waved and he waved back. Keep up the good content my family enjoys it.
Have you tried aluminum instead of plexiglass? About the same price at lowes and may be a bit more durable.
I have made them out of aluminum and when I perfect the aluminum arm I will be making some. And yes they definitely will be more durable.
The aluminum plate that you now for the planner boards are they 18 gauge?? or thicker??
Yeah 18 gauge.
Thanks I learned something.
Awesome! Really glad you did.
Hows those clips work with alot of junk floating?? My river as alot of junk floating most of the time. Just wondering how clips act with debree floating or build up.
They still work pretty well. I'm sure like where your at the leaves are everywhere. It get built up pretty good on the boards but they hold just fine.
I appreciate you posting this! Did you ever figure out how to tread the aluminum rods?
Thank you for watching. Yeah I was able to figure it out. I just had to get a die that had bigger clean outs on it. I also started making the body out of 18 gauge aluminum. Pretty much as good as anything on the market.
Ok, thanks, this is very helpful! I want start making my own. The rods are 18 gauge? I am sure I can just google that. May just order a bunch of that make me some up.
Sorry, you are using the aluminum instead of plexiglass?
@@mathewpeace yeah now. I figured out I can make the aluminum boards just like the plexiglass boards. Same tools and everything. Just the material is different.
What do you use to the aluminum sheet? And the round edge
Great video brother
Thank you
Where did you get the Scotty Clips?
Thats an amazing job.
@@sandyhenderson3267 I get them off Amazon. Cheapest place I've found them.
@@sandyhenderson3267 thank you
Great video bud.
Thank you
What kind of glue you used?
@@JEdronevideos I just used 100% silicone. It works pretty good.
I will try that.
It's a good money saver for sure.
What is the purpose of the tape? Isn't the EPS waterproof already?
It is. It's just to make it slightly more durable and you can make them pretty much any color you want.
@@mickaburkhart14 ok Cool, so not a necessary step for functionality?
What size is the slider clip you use?
I'm honestly not sure about the size. I'd say #2 or 3. I couldn't find it on the package. Sorry about that.
Your fishing the Tennessee River most of the time??
No the Cumberland river.
I watched the last video you made & Those planer boards you made look like, you now used metal ( aluminum ) instead of Plexi glass ? or is it just due to the sun? I was going to make some up here come winter time.
I was able to apply the same way I made them with plexiglass to making them out of aluminum.
I work at a Hospital in Maintenance and we used 1/4" Lexan during Covid so I have plenty of scraps to make planer boards. Try WD40 on your threes when using the Die.
Heck yeah. Lexan is way better than plexiglass by far. So you are good to go. Build a bunch.
Do you keep live bait ? If so what kind of tank are you going with??
I do keep live bait. I use 175 gallon stock tank with a bucket filter and a small pond pump. It works great.
Could be one of your next video topics during the offseason maybe??@@mickaburkhart14
@@PopPopJoe yeah that's a good idea. I'll have to do that.
I can’t wait to see you on a River bro
could you please send me link and where to buy both of those clips thanks.
So are you saying you now make them with aluminum rather than Plexi glass? I think I missed what you were saying.
Yeah I make them out of aluminum now. After I posted thus video had alot of good comments that were suggesting that I try aluminum. So I did and was able to start making them that way.
That’s good. What thickness aluminum are you using
@@PopPopJoe it is 18 gauge thickness.
I would like to make them but I have no idea how to use them or hook them up. I catfish a lot and have seen how they can be an advantage.
I'll include on how to use them in one of my next videos.
@@mickaburkhart14 awesome.
What’s dimensions on the plexiglass??
9.5 by 5.5 inches
Great video
Thank you
Instead of plexi glass, use lexan of the same thickness. It is a little more expensive but you will not break it. You will have to use a saw to cut it, table saw for straight lines and a jigsaw for curves or you can sand it down. Drilling won't break it either. I do glass work for a living, you can trust me on this info
You should show it in use
Take aluminum rod to a machine shop and ask them what type threader you should use. I'm sure they will tell you. Got to be a trick to it.
Yeah that's kinda what I actually did. Had a machinist friend of mine hook me up with the correct thread cutter I needed and it works great. But definitely thank you for your support.
💪👊👍
Thank you
I hate those red clips
I've used those scotty down rigger clips for years salmon fishing and have not had a problem. The further you put your line into the clip the better it holds
Good deal. Yeah I I really like them clips. For how I fish they are perfect.
