Why is it most of these videos the presenter talks about the product and opens and closes the blades and accessories but never actually uses the tool to do some real work with it. I would really like to see some working people who actually use these daily on the job to put them through what real work would demand from a tool. These videos are ok just to see the tool but actions are louder than words.
I've had my leatherman free p4 for about 3 years my grandpa also uses one, we have cattle ranches our multitool gets used daily, I shaped the awl into a real awl, shaped the small flathead on the file tip, sharpened the can opener to make it useful for other things, I love my multitool cant see myself working with a different model I know it like the palm of my hand.
I dont know if you have seen them yet or not, but Clay Hayes shows some stuff on his channel like that. He uses the free p4 if I remember correctly. It was what he used on season 8 of alone. He does some re creations of the stuff he made on the show.
As an industrial electrician who deals with plenty of metal shavings, I have no had a problem with the magnets. I switched over from a bulky, trusty surge to the P2 specifically because of having exterior, easily accessible screwdrivers. The amount of times where I only need a slotted screwdriver in a plant setting is astounding, and this tool does it for me. I'm not using mine for survival or in the outdoors widdling sticks for no reason, but as a professional tradesman and it has not let me down once.
Ive modded my P4 to hold a file/saw and used it for a lot of metal filing and cutting. No problems. Great platform to modify/add swap tools around on woth the shared lock bar.
I also switched from the Surge (electronic technician). This is now my favorite multitool; had the original Leatherman, Surge and Wave. One hand operation is key, especially on a ladder holding something with one hand. This tool also has a B crimper if I don't have my tool belt on and need one in a pinch. And that, to me, is the point of any multitool. It doesn't replace real tools, it's something I have on me to use in a pinch. The wave stays in my backpack (saw) and I picked up a T4 to replace my SAK everyday.
@@maxlvledc the outdoor companion is best for you...there are plenty of people who use this item with a good experience....so No it's not really surprising at all....Nobody knows what is best for all...NOBODY
You are right that the free series is perfect for new users. My brother had many cheap multi-tools that lived in a draw. Bought him a free P2 for his 40th and he has carried it everyday since.
I agree. Still, the Leatherman Free P4 is my favorite multitool. Here's why: => I find the Free P4 amazing for outdoors and survival, with it's true one handed operation. If you have one hand busy or incapacitated, it can still be used with ease. It is also extremely robust, more than the wave, as the pliears are beefier, second only to the Surge. Sure, the bit drivers are not replaceable, but in the outdoors, screwdriver bits are almost useless. Also, in the outdors, a saw is a must, so it wins over the P2. My P4 is my permanent bug-out-bag multitool. => The Free P2 is great as a "casual" multitool: No interchangeable bits, no need for saw in the city, and lighter than many. So this one is great for EDC. Just as the Wingman, and the Free K2 and K4. => The Wave+ and the Charge+ and the Surge are great for home use or city use. Many many tools, but opening mechanism is primitive and they are bulky and heavy. So they are great for toolboxes, car, or keeping at home. But compared to the free series, their operation seems clunky and primitive. I still love it too, it's in my toolbox all the time. So I think each main Leatherman multitool has their place.
What use do you get out of the saw in the outdoors? I think the saw is to short to be effectivly used for anything you can’t break much quicker with your hands or step on it.
With the saw yow can carve square notches for traps, which you can't do by breaking. Saws do much more than just cutting branches. @@mariusengelsen7194
Free P4 was my first EDC multitool and it is brilliant - for those mentioned 3 reasons plus for that ballisong effect. In effect - my old Victorinox has landed in the drawer.
I agree! I was camping recently and had my Signal with me. Excellent multitool for outdoors, but the whole time I wished I had my Free P instead because I kept having to put down what was in my hand so I could get a tool on the Signal with two hands.
Yeah the pricing imo was a little high but I guess you were paying for the convenience and newness haha I do prefer the free series over any other leatherman I own. It's a much better plier than the wave plus, no pinchy pinchy lol the screwdrivers are the best I've used by far, I'm not a huge fan of leathermans proprietary bits they bend and fail too often. Looking forward to the mod videos to come! Hah
I investigate in the free series for a time. Because it's nice looking and easy to modify, with all the mods you can find on the internet. I'm a mechanic, so I heard also about the magnets and also if I would have bought the tool and all the mods the way I wanted, let's us say for that price range you could buy lots of others.
I bought mine for features, because it is quality, and because it is made in the USA. Sure, someone could buy cheap junk for less. Sure, the P4 could be improved upon. The problem is that there is no perfect multi-tool. Even if there was a perfect multi-tool for me, it would not be perfect for someone else. A multi-tool is a compromised collection of compromised tools. Compromises may be less for some, and more for others. Personally, I find the bottle opener to be useless. Everywhere you look, there is a bottle opener. Who actually uses a bottle opener? All but 2 multi-tools I have seen had a bottle opener. Enough, already! My biggest issue with multi-tools is that the tools do not work. Most of the multi-tool can openers are terrible. The same applies to many bottle openers, most package openers, many of the saws, most of the screw drivers, most of the scissors, many of the wire cutters, some of the pry tools, many of the files, and some of the blades. There is no reason for this! If they are going to include a tool, that tool should work! Sorry. A bit of a tangent. A screw driver that may be great for one person may be inadequate for another person. I have several multi-tools with replaceable bit drivers. In my experience, the replaceable bits on the multi-tools are always falling out. Further, the Leatherman replaceable bits are very flimsy. For a mechanic, it would seem that you would just use the correct tool. Using a multi-tool at the shop does not make sense to me. Outside the shop, there should not be small metal particles.
Your analysis is always so on point 👍 I'm really concerned that Leatherman is being run by a talented engineer who has NFI what customers want and doesn't give a damn.... Arrogance is Leathermans Achilles heel ☹️ I love my 2007 Wave and my brand new Surge, but, they make so many stupid choices ☹️
I’m thinking of going down in size from my wave to a p2. I daily pocket carry urban 99% so the saw isn’t needed and I agree about the bits. Got me thinkin now, thx
You make a great point at the intro about a complimentary outdoors tool. I thought the same thing when I first got mine. And if it was your first and only pliers based Multitool, you would not be missing much! Great video. Thank you for taking the time to make it for us.
I have an Original Charge TTI, Surge, Free P4, Victoronix and a new Charge TTI en route. I love all my tools but I love my P4 because of its functionality. It’s with me for life!
I've snapped a Charge TTI trying to take a jammed key out. Haven't had a problem with my P4. As for the magnets and metal shavings, that will be the minority. As the file does leave a lot to be desired.
If main blade was 154CM or S30V would've silenced 90% of the price complaints. Immediate changes I would make to this design: #1 Upgrade main blade and scissors steel to something decent like 154CM or S30V. #2 Replace serrated blade with 9mm snap-off OLFA retractable craft blade that deploys out the bottom of handle, not fold out. #3 Replace saw with t-shank jigsaw blade/file holder. #4 Square 4 edge cutter blades so you have onboard access to multiple fresh edges by rotating them. #5 Replace phillips/flathead with NORMAL double end bitholder, don't care if handles need to be slightly larger or something. #6 Replace all the random garbo small tools with storage for a few extra double end bits. In particular a double-ender with the torx bits required for the leatherman itself. #7 Hide a measuring scale in the designs on the sides of the handles. These failures to exploit existing HEAVILY R&Ded tools like bits, t-shank blades, and scalpel/utility/craft blades are why multi-tool designs are always inferior. Stop reinventing the wheel and learn to exploit the incredible amounts of materials science and engineering which has already been done. If there's one thing that makes absolute PERFECT sense to incorporate into a multi-tool, it's some kind of disposable blade. Ideally one suitable for rough work like an 18mm snapoff or utility blades, but even 9mm snapoff or scalpel blades would be a massive step up from what exists now. I don't need a stupid serrated blade, I need a hard use disposable blade. If Knipex made a pliers-wrench with slightly longer jaws that narrowed slightly at the end, a 9mm or 18mm Olfa-style snap off utility blade deployed from one handle and a retractable double-end bit holder in the other handle... I would use that every day over anything which exists on the market. I have a P4, a Wave, a Charge TTI, and a skeletool CX and I rarely use any of them except occasionally the P4. Instead I carry 150mm pliers wrench and a 20 dollar milwaukee fastback utility knife with bit driver. I already know how to sharpen blades... I don't want to spend 10 minutes resharpening my blade every time I use my knife for a rough task. I don't want to have to worry about putting deep gouges or nicks in it or snapping the tip off then end up fetching my utility knife instead because I don't want to damage my permanent blade. I want to get the job done, then replace the blade for pennies. I also don't want to carry around a bunch of useless novelty garbage tools like crappy awls and inferior files and ancient can openers. Just extra weight which could be distributed into increasing the quality of the tools which I actually use.
Hmmmm I love my P4. I work in the IT department and this tool has been my go to so far. I guess it depends with the person’s needs. I use to use the the wave+ and the super tool before that.
I hadn't seen this video, but I came to the same conclusion in a roundabout way. I was really unhappy with my Signal on an actual backpacking trip where I wanted to see if it could be my sole tool to carry when every ounce counts. The saw is too short as to ruin my experience of building a small fire. So from that point, I already knew I wanted to carry a little more saw, which I'll do with the Opinel 12 saw. Meanwhile, I agree that the Free tech is great for outdoor because one-handed access is really quite valuable for efficiency and enjoyability doing camp tasks. But since I don't need a redundant saw, that excludes the Free P4 in favor of the P2. So there you have it, the P2 is the surprising winner in a backpacking use case if you're already carrying a better saw. As for the Signal now, I really enjoy it most in its single-side pocketknife form via your awesome mod. Why not just go with a Victorinox Ranger grip, you ask? I may do so, but I keep running into need for good pliers when camping, and leaving a dedicated saw with my camping stuff allows me to EDC the P2 and not feel like I'm carrying anything unneeded. The obsession continues...
Thinking bout swapping my surge out for this. I've loved my surge. It's been used every single day since I got it and made me appreciate multitools. But honestly this seems alot more like what I was looking for... Worth doing the swap??
You are exactly right on target with this assessment! I am retiring this year, and a good multi tool is something I started thinking about. I was onboard for the p4, but maybe it was the marketing and the price that held me back some. Then for the last three weeks I have seen many many other multi tools. I’m just about burned out. Your video here actually resparked my interest in this one. Only I don’t think I want to pay that much. Question, can the Leatherman Free P4 be customized? Great job 👏
When the free series came out i didn't buy one because i thought they went backwards on the tool setup in regards to the bit driver although i did like the idea of the free technology and it was a bit expensive. I have both the wave and surge. I preferred the size of the wave but preferred the tool set up on the surge and was hoping they would come out with a tool that would be sort of a cross between the bothe of them. When the arc came out, at least for me, I thought it was a nice mix of the wave and surge along with the free technology. I did buy one and do like the set up but would like i think it was a little expensive. I'm aware that's because of the magnacut blade but I personally don't really need a steal like this on a multitool.
I had a wave and sold it to get a P2 which I found cheaper on eBay brand new. I love it although the lack of a bit driver sucks but there’s some mods u can do it to. Came across a best damn edc video about some mods for a bit driver and I purchased one from the guy that makes the mod for a P2 that was showed in that vid. Game changer for sure! Add the ratchet driver to it and it became my favorite leatherman! P2 is the way to go!
@@brianbrian4317 p4 has 2 extra tools and an extra ounce of weight. Little bigger measurements. Full serrated blade and wood saw. Blade changes from half serration to full smooth edge
Ive been carrying a sidekick since 2016 & its gets used pretty much everyday. I was looking for one that the tools locked open while deployed & a saw, i had some store credit so i ordered a free p4. It should be arriving shortly, im kinda bummed that the pliers aren't spring-loaded
I own both a Wave with a bit kit and a P4. As a member of a Ski Patrol, I arrived at some of the same conclusions. In my view the P4 is a much better tool when working outside in the cold and snow. The fact that all the tools are one handed accessible and that you don't have to dick around with changing bits with extremely cold hands (or dropping them in the snow) cinched the deal for me, P4 all the way.
The toolset works nice on the T-range, something that sits in your pocket for filing nails and whatnot as a far better alternative to the SAK. But in something that’s supposed to be used for work, they’re all too small. Less tools and full-size would have made more sense.
I own every Leatherman . Before they came up with these. I said no thanks. I actually just ordered the Victorianox multi tool. Spirit x. Due to Leatherman not really working out lately.
I never tried the P4 but I loved my P2. Ended up giving it to my dad tho. I fully intend on buying another one or trying the P4. What you've said about it wouldn't bother me at all.
Even tho i love the Free series and actually bought a P4 right when they came out... broke one if the springs on it two months after and i only played with it, Leatherman didn't understand how i broke it. Then bought a T4 and guess what... broke a spring as well... it's too fidgety, i play too much with them... ahah ! Looking forward to see your modifications on your P2 ! 🤟
So here is my take; the Leatherman P series is an domestic invention with largely American made manufactured parts. This is seldom stressed enough and while not perfect, the magnetic system is a new approach. Gerber had a another opportunity as they did with the CenterDrive to bring forward another domestic innovation, yet decided to make the Dual Force in China. Personally I don't swear any allegiance to any corporation, brand or individual; yet I don't think this is truly that out of the mainstream to want to put my country (United States of America) first. I'd be more than happy to pay a little more for products knowing I am sustaining and crating domestic manufacturing jobs in my country and not making others countries richer. In all the time I've used the P2, P4, K series and Mr. Crunch; I've never had any issue with metal shavings or any containments for that matter with the tool.
Good to hear! And I'm all for American made...but they said they spent 7 years developing it...so it makes me wonder how it could have been released with some many wierd issues. I think it's quite genius..no doubt, but it simply had a disconnect between the target audience, price, and marketing.
The Free P4 (which I do have) is a full version of the Free P2 (which I do not have). I'll have to see what you do, but using parts from the Free P4 to mod the P2 makes no sense to me at this time. You'll wind up with a P4? That having been stated, I have or have had just about all of Leatherman's multi-tools, several Ozark Trail multi-tools, several Bibury milti-tools, as well as other multi-tools, for a total of about 60 multi-tools. They come and go. The P4 is not perfect, but what is better? Not the Wave/Charge/clone series. Not the Wingman or Sidekick. Not the Rebar or 300. Not the OHT. Not the Crunch. In general, not the Surge. Not the K series. There is no perfect multi-tool. I went through maybe 100 multi-tools. A multi-tool is--by definition--a compromise. Every implement on it is compromised. Whomever designs and builds the multi-tool must make compromises in tool selection, as well as the tools themselves. Even 2 multi-tools were not adequate, for my purposes. Even if I chose the implements on both tools, they would not be adequate. I have seen youtube videos where the author claimed to have corrected the P4, or where the author claimed a "Super P4". Each of these "improvements" took a useful multi-tool, and made it junk, in my opinion. I was involved in a group that did a multi-tool challenge. In this case, the challenge was to use only the tools carried on our person, for an entire week. This challenge really showed whose tool selections worked...and whose tool selections did not work. Most of the participants failed. How will your new tool fare?
Yea the metal shaving , isn't an actual issue(I don't currently own a leatherman so I don't have a dog in this race yet) but as it was explained , if someone was working around enough metal shavings for this to be an issue , is it not better for the magnets to attract the shavings rather than it go everywhere into the moving parts . I will add I've talked to two machinist who use the free series and they also echoed that they don't have a problem with metal shavings. Maybe they put a extra strong neodymium magnet in the one he has
Put a couple of paper clips in one of the nooks in your tool, or carry a few paper clips in your wallet. ;) You can fancy a variety of little auxiliary tools out of a paper clip with a plier and wire cutter
@@mooseman6226 those would be cool...but i was thinking along the lines of the toothpick option...housed in the body. or in the case of some of the multitools that cater to the tech lovers, maybe an option that folds out...
The file is short, but certainly outlasts the file on the Wave. The P4 file will go where the Wave file will not go. The Wave is much ado about nothing.
I’m a custom knife maker and I have to keep this in a ziplock bag while I’m working. It gets caked. They should do another model in the free series w a real awl and better tools. The awl makes me want to cry. Also the screwdriver ruler already bent. Bullshit
This thing was sooo missmarketed..the implements just can't hold up to heavy use outside of the philips and large flat head... have you tried the dual force?
The SOG Poweraccess Assist MT does everything and more at 2/3 the cost of the Free series, with the the only draw back being bigger and bulkier. It has a full size bit drive, that locks at 90 degrees! One of my faves
SOG could have been Leatherman ! I had a Paratool back in 97, it was SO much better than any Leatherman tool ! But they never developed it ! Locking tools would have been an easy upgrade but they were lazy and Leatherman smashed them with the keyring tools and then the Wave.
There's never a clear winner! I'm leaning towards the Signal due to the size/weight & its bit drivers... but still tempted by the P2/P4 because of their free/open movement and one-handed everything. Can you buy individual blades from Leatherman for the purpose for "frankensteining"? e.g. putting a bit holder in the P2?
I love the models that u have nothing to lose..... people love the bit drivers and blade exchanger etc. Until the lose thier bits and blades then it's a useless tool until u order a new one
I think the P4 is just to heavy as a pocket knife/tool. Unless you wear it on your belt in its case. I prefer the Victorinox Ranger Grip 79. Half the weight and all the tools I need.
Honest truth if the Free P4 cost 80 dollars new, I would have bought it without a second thought. But at 150 dollars im asking myself, why buy this when i can get a Surge.
I want to upgrade from my 60$ gerber truss multi tool and I love the style of the free p4, the free motion and the tools but at that price I can't really bring myself to buy it. I found older second hand wave and charge ti near me so i might go with one of those.
*IN EUROPE THESE COST €200 !!!* There is no way in HELL I pay that much for it. It is so damn inconsidered of Leatherman to price it this high! I am a fan of Leatherman and would love to add stuff to my collection. But not at this steep of a price. A real shame.
Ouch...here in the UK it's £140 which is around 160 Euros...but still too expensive considering that I can get the Victorinox X Plus - the one with the added ratchet and bitset - or the new Spirit MX - the one with the pocket clip and one handed opening blade - for less. So if I were looking for a multitool with locking blades in that price bracket I'd get one of those instead. As it is I was able to pick up a Bond for under £50 which I can legally EDC, if I want scissors and woodsaw I pair it up with my excellent Victorinox Farmer X - that cost me just under £50 too but combined they still cost 2/3 of the price of the Free P4 and are a better quality toolset imho. Unfortunately we in Europe tend to pay much more for US made and even Chinese made US branded multitools i.e. SOG and Gerber than in North America.
Similar happens to quality European products making their way to the US. You see it all the time with German engineering. I think we can acknowledge both facts: 1. It's high quality stuff. 2. It's very expensive to import
What can I say guys I have a couple of multi-tools and different brands but I'm going to be totally honest with you guys once I got ahold on a Leatherman Wave Plus I just can't stop carrying it I was carrying the Gerber Center Drive for about a year-and-a-half but now that I have my Leatherman Wave plus just can't seem to let go it's been faithful to me came in handy when I needed it
Broke the bit drivers, first use. Lost the large bit, at some point, but it was already twisted. The scissors are terrible. The file wore out. The pliers head is always in the way, and it is such a psin,, having to open and close the pliers, to deploy some other implement. The Wave/Charge is the definition of poor design.
No one agrees, but the sharpened large flat blade screwdriver is terrible and it destroys the functionality of what would otherwise be a great driver. Leatherman, just add a small wharncliff blade for package opening and wire stripping like the Victorinox Electrician has. Works great. While you're at it, slim down the phillips driver so it fits into pocketed holes.
first leatherman with all outside tools, right? victorinox did that in 97/98 wit the Swisstool that is still superior to my second most liked mt, the surge>< the one hand stuff is cool and practical, just not as a southpaw living in a country where those blades are not street legal. Plus the quality of newer Leathermans is just ass. (speaking from own experience from my last 2 purchases, the wave+ 2h)
I’m getting more confused with all these multi tools. Maybe that’s way I still haven’t purchased one after all this time. I’m retired after thirty years of service and do handyman stuff around your home and some automotive repairs. It seems like if I purchase a multi tool another new just comes out.🤔.
budget range? for what purpose? When the dual force is available at SMKW for around $78 it should be very solid for automotive, and also possibly for handyman tasks.
The p4 was so close to being perfect, its an excellent tool. I got some modifications from zap wizard designs. I have a wave tshank adapter and bit driver and it makes it PERFECT. One handed operation of all tools with a pocket clip👌👌👌
I’m a leftie. I LOVE my leatherman free. As a leftie though, I am 100% aware that you have to pay for quality that’s ambidextrous. LOVE my Free! I am not a new user though.
Find me another multi tool that you can open with one hand every tool wearing a glove. Yes I wear an XL glove and I can open every tool and use it effectively wearing a glove. Yes, it is worth the $141 not having to remove my glove in the dead of winter to deploy the tools.
@@maxlvledc Made in USA with $30 per hour labor costs vs $2 per hour in China you will always have a much more costly tool. I am for quality and detail to workmanship. I have owned Chinese $50 multi tools with blades that cannot hold an edge and you get what you pay for and I paid $141 for my P4 and I feel like I got a good tool. I could have purchased a P2 for $79 new on EBay but the blade is wrong and no saw. Time and parts is money and I am not going to mess with a P2 to make it a P4 which in the end will cost me more than just buying the P4 factoring in my time and buying P4 /waive parts.
I work in the metal industry, i figured the magnets would make it impossible for me to use this tool at work... It is a shame tho, i did like the tool, even if the small tools don't look as good.
So Dominic, what's your thoughts about the new Tool coming out with the same system as the Free P4 {magnets} The Free P4 was a fail to so many people in the industry that works in a shop environment that operates power tools like grinders, metal lathe, welders, bench drills and large floor drills, farmers, mechanics. Magnets and that type of shop and work environment don't mix. Lets face it these types of shops are 70% of the industry, wood shops 10% and shipping and receiving {box cutters} 20%. Are they just looking at supplying the 30% of the work force? There is a reason why the Wave plus in a very short period became their best seller. Or are they looking to market their new tool just to the fidgeter, well that's what it looks like to me, and if so, well another fail for their designing team. Again just my opinion. What's your feedback.
Agreed. Who has actually experienced this? The P4 magnets are very weak. I have an Olight flashlight with a magnetic base. That base has a far stronger magnet. Even if metal filings do get into the P4, a soapy water wash with a stronger magnet fixes that. I have always cleaned my tools after use. My P4 sets in a sheath. Metal filings do not attract to, through, or into the sheath. They may attract if poured on the tool. There is a youtube video where someone showed this. They debunked the entire metal particles myth. I do not understand why people who have no experience or knowledge of this keep perpetuating this myth as fact.
Why is it most of these videos the presenter talks about the product and opens and closes the blades and accessories but never actually uses the tool to do some real work with it. I would really like to see some working people who actually use these daily on the job to put them through what real work would demand from a tool. Free P4 was my first EDC multitool and it is brilliant - for those mentioned 3 reasons plus for that ballisong effect. In effect - my old Victorinox has landed in the drawer.
I’m new to Leatherman. I spent $200CAD on the Free P4 and I’m so happy with it!
Been using the P4 for over a year everyday. It's a great tool
Hah
Seems like the older uses love wave and newer (like me) the free series
Your analysis is always so on point 👍
I'm really concerned that Leatherman is being run by a talented engineer who has NFI what customers want and doesn't give a damn.... Arrogance is Leathermans Achilles heel ☹️
I love my 2007 Wave and my brand new Surge, but, they make so many stupid choices ☹️
2 years later.... I just bought a Free P4 and I LOOOOOOVE IT. It's the poor man's Arc. That's not really for a poor man.
I’m thinking of going down in size from my wave to a p2. I daily pocket carry urban 99% so the saw isn’t needed and I agree about the bits. Got me thinkin now, thx
This is my first leatherman and I'm a bushcrafter that also works with computers. This tool serves me great.
I thing the P4 makes it into my top 5 outdoor multitools
@@maxlvledc what are the other 4
You make a great point at the intro about a complimentary outdoors tool. I thought the same thing when I first got mine. And if it was your first and only pliers based Multitool, you would not be missing much! Great video. Thank you for taking the time to make it for us.
I don't work with metal shavings on the daily, but I knew the magnets would be an issue right of the bat
As a Wave user of 14 years, I wanted a new one. The price really keeps me off this one sadly.
I use mine for fly fishing.. and love it. like you said for the outdoors
If main blade was 154CM or S30V would've silenced 90% of the price complaints.
Immediate changes I would make to this design:
#1 Upgrade main blade and scissors steel to something decent like 154CM or S30V.
The price in Germany is about 199€, I’ll take it for that preis , the only mistake is they don’t put the bit holder in it , than it wood be perfect
Mod is the go matey. Can't wait to see it. I'm sure Leatherman is definitely watching..!!
So isn’t the p2 the ‘lite’ version of the p4?
@@brianbrian4317 p4 has 2 extra tools and an extra ounce of weight. Little bigger measurements.
Full serrated blade and wood saw. Blade changes from half serration to full smooth edge
Ive been carrying a sidekick since 2016 & its gets used pretty much everyday. I was looking for one that the tools locked open while deployed & a saw, i had some store credit so i ordered a free p4. It should be arriving shortly, im kinda bummed that the pliers aren't spring-loaded
Just got my p4 I like it but can’t wait for the GOAT.
It is too bulky, thus far.
Exactly, they just marketed it completely wrong
i got this as my first multitool and i gotta say its amazing. i really like the how smooth it is. although i wonder if i got too much for a first.
The toolset works nice on the T-range, something that sits in your pocket for filing nails and whatnot as a far better alternative to the SAK. But in something that’s supposed to be used for work, they’re all too small. Less tools and full-size would have made more sense.
Yeah, not for me, back to my Chargre Ti, as you mentioned no bits and then I found the construction feeling "flimsy".
I own every Leatherman . Before they came up with these. I said no thanks. I actually just ordered the Victorianox multi tool. Spirit x. Due to Leatherman not really working out lately.
Very good review with clear and fresh points
I never tried the P4 but I loved my P2. Ended up giving it to my dad tho. I fully intend on buying another one or trying the P4. What you've said about it wouldn't bother me at all.
Even tho i love the Free series and actually bought a P4 right when they came out... broke one if the springs on it two months after and i only played with it, Leatherman didn't understand how i broke it. Then bought a T4 and guess what... broke a spring as well... it's too fidgety, i play too much with them... ahah ! Looking forward to see your modifications on your P2 ! 🤟
Which spring did you break?
@@googleuser6635 I guess the locking spring/leaf. Which is... Insane. Since you have a better chance of breaking the tools before the lock mechanism.
I have a TI leatherman from about 10 years ago. I've never needed another.
I have problems with metal dust sticking to my phone near the cameras and MagSafe port. Can see where the magnets can hinder their use.
I have the wave first and I lost it or was stolen so I replaced it with the p4 and love it its so many ways better then the wave
My P4 replaced my wave for all my uses (fishing, range bag, camping, hiking). Sorry you have to work around so many metal shavings :(
Yea the metal shaving , isn't an actual issue(I don't currently own a leatherman so I don't have a dog in this race yet) but as it was explained , if someone was working around enough metal shavings for this to be an issue , is it not better for the magnets to attract the shavings rather than it go everywhere into the moving parts . I will add I've talked to two machinist who use the free series and they also echoed that they don't have a problem with metal shavings. Maybe they put a extra strong neodymium magnet in the one he has
you know what might make an option on some multitools? a sim card tool...
Put a couple of paper clips in one of the nooks in your tool, or carry a few paper clips in your wallet. ;)
You can fancy a variety of little auxiliary tools out of a paper clip with a plier and wire cutter
I think victorinox have some aftermarket simcard tool, to be stores in the corkskrew.
@@mooseman6226 those would be cool...but i was thinking along the lines of the toothpick option...housed in the body. or in the case of some of the multitools that cater to the tech lovers, maybe an option that folds out...
The "open" design of the handles P4 and P2 does not stand up to criticism. This tool was developed by a 3D designer, not an engineer.
You are 100% correct
If they could just put a locking quarter inch driver on this platform it would be perfect
All FREE P4 tools are accessible with one hand : ua-cam.com/video/YecZ3jdYas0/v-deo.html
When did I say they weren't?
@@maxlvledc 0'57"
Is there a new free model coming out? Why did you say “new tool”? Curious….
You can’t leave me hanging like that haha
Thank you. The second hand market is going to be full after this.
already is lol, the P2 is like $70 on ebay.
I use the file on my Wave+ very often and the P4 file is a joke. That is my biggest complaint about the P4.
same, but it bothers me less on the P2 because they only had one slot to fill. P4..that annoys me.
Bullshit
Btw I collect leathemans. I have almost all of them and Vic and gerbers best models
This thing was sooo missmarketed..the implements just can't hold up to heavy use outside of the philips and large flat head... have you tried the dual force?
It’s a pity such a fancy (and expensive) tool cannot live out its predestined life. My condolences!
The SOG Poweraccess Assist MT does everything and more at 2/3 the cost of the Free series, with the the only draw back being bigger and bulkier. It has a full size bit drive, that locks at 90 degrees! One of my faves
I got that tool, played with it for two hours, then immediately returned it. Not even worth reviewing.
I also love this tool and think it's easily equal to a surge.
@@maxlvledc to each their own, I do like something that is very different from it, the Leatherman Crunch
SOG could have been Leatherman ! I had a Paratool back in 97, it was SO much better than any Leatherman tool ! But they never developed it ! Locking tools would have been an easy upgrade but they were lazy and Leatherman smashed them with the keyring tools and then the Wave.
@@maxlvledc Same.
Zap wizzard design has just that my friend
I love the models that u have nothing to lose..... people love the bit drivers and blade exchanger etc. Until the lose thier bits and blades then it's a useless tool until u order a new one
That was one of the reasons I bought the P4.
Is there a preference for the production date of Leatherman free p4 ?
Thanks
Not sure what your asking
I want to buy this multi tool
They have on the magnet a production date
Iam asking if there is a recommendation on the production date ?
I love the magnet lock and how it acts like a butterfly knife
It's good, no doublt, they simply messed up in marketing.
Does the P2 have a better fidget factor?
Same as P4
I would love to have one, but in Poland it costs $207.
I just want a Swisstool x clip
Very good thoughts on the tool.
Thanx!
Should I get wave+ or the free P4 🤔
They are COMPLETELY different tools, basically 🍎 and 🍊.
What can I say guys I have a couple of multi-tools and different brands but I'm going to be totally honest with you guys once I got ahold on a Leatherman Wave Plus I just can't stop carrying it I was carrying the Gerber Center Drive for about a year-and-a-half but now that I have my Leatherman Wave plus just can't seem to let go it's been faithful to me came in handy when I needed it
the Wave plus is still the tool to beat, for all it's shortcomings it still rocks!
I have no problem paying up for a quality tool that is made in Portland Oregon. Tim Leatherman is as American as it gets.
The Free P2 & P4 price is due to it's USA made.
No one agrees, but the sharpened large flat blade screwdriver is terrible and it destroys the functionality of what would otherwise be a great driver. Leatherman, just add a small wharncliff blade for package opening and wire stripping like the Victorinox Electrician has. Works great. While you're at it, slim down the phillips driver so it fits into pocketed holes.
wow, stop stealing the thunder! I was going to do exactly this mod for the large flat in the future P2.
The Wingman has an awesome package opener. I'd like to have that on my P4.
magnet to secure tools? meh. magnet to secure bits? yes please
I bought one. $200 Cdn. Worth the coin.
first leatherman with all outside tools, right? victorinox did that in 97/98 wit the Swisstool that is still superior to my second most liked mt, the surge>< the one hand stuff is cool and practical, just not as a southpaw living in a country where those blades are not street legal. Plus the quality of newer Leathermans is just ass. (speaking from own experience from my last 2 purchases, the wave+ 2h)
I know i am late to this video but did anyone else find the handle texture to be ugly? Like a poor attempt at the SAK alox scales?
It was supposed to be a tribute to the original PST I believe
I’m getting more confused with all these multi tools. Maybe that’s way I still haven’t purchased one after all this time. I’m retired after thirty years of service and do handyman stuff around your home and some automotive repairs. It seems like if I purchase a multi tool another new just comes out.🤔.
What would be a good one to buy that won’t quite break the bank? Thank you.
your not wrong
budget range? for what purpose? When the dual force is available at SMKW for around $78 it should be very solid for automotive, and also possibly for handyman tasks.
@@maxlvledc What would your choices be at this time?

I’m a leftie. I LOVE my leatherman free. As a leftie though, I am 100% aware that you have to pay for quality that’s ambidextrous. LOVE my Free! I am not a new user though.
I am also left-handed, could you please tell me which is the most comfortable multitool for lefties that you have used? Thanks
Find me another multi tool that you can open with one hand every tool wearing a glove. Yes I wear an XL glove and I can open every tool and use it effectively wearing a glove.
Yes, it is worth the $141 not having to remove my glove in the dead of winter to deploy the tools.
It's a big factor, the OHT can do that as well btw.

Free p4> free p2!
I work in the metal industry, i figured the magnets would make it impossible for me to use this tool at work...
It is a shame tho, i did like the tool, even if the small tools don't look as good.
Interestingly...a lot of ppl have come out of the wood work to tell me the magnet issue is overstated
See I have a need for a saw with serrations or a serrated blade. But possibly those are too deep
the P4 serrated blade is amazing..but I'll probably be going for straight blade + saw.
I made a whole video on it lol
Id love one, but it's too expensive.
Huh, good points indeed.
I love mine so much more then my wave
That doesn't surprise me..as the wave was not ideal for the average user.
Hmmm don’t really understand your reasoning behind this?🧐🧐 there basic the same tool.
Haha.. though I enjoy his reviews, a lot of this sentiment about metal shavings seems to be a personal hang up of TX tool crib, Amplified by youtube.
I am hearing from more ppl now that it may be an overstated problem. Sadly I have limited access to that kind of feedback
