    Hello, Jose from Puerto Rico and a new subscriber to this channel. I'm viewing this video on November 23, 2020. On this date I will receive a Leatherman P4. Having said that, the reason I subscribed to your channel was the first lines of your intro. You're a tradesman who puts tools through their paces taking them to the max. I'm not a tradesman per-say, but I do enjoy the functionality of these multi-tools. I've owned the Wave, some tools from Gerber, Victorinox and other brands I don't remember now. I currently own a Leatherman Crunch multi-tool and love that locking plier mechanism. I bought the P4 because arthritis is catching up to my hands and the one-handed design was the selling point for me. But after I pulled the trigger, I've seen lots of negative reviews on the P4. You're the only tradesman who has said positive things on this tool and it's reassuring that I didn't make a bad purchase. Like you mentioned in the first 2 sentences, not everyone is a tradesman and you're putting yourself in the place of folks who are not going to put this tool in situations that you probably do in a daily basis.I'm 64 and my hand joints are hurting. I'm also retired. So I guess not all is negative with the P4.

      Most of the initial reviews were positive. I was actually both. I thought the engineering behind the FREE line was brilliant, and the tool concept was lacking. However, after hearing many stories like yours, my thinking is that there is a reasonably strong market for this series. Some people just like the new and shiny, others actually need it for what it was intended to be used for. At any rate, I’m glad that the FREE series works so well for you. I appreciate your subscription very much, and welcome aboard.

      @@pylant I gave the P4 as a gift to a friend, and I got myself a Surge. The only tool I had from Victorinox was the famous multi-bladed knife that had everything but the kitchen sink. I ended up giving that to a good friend too. The Surge is my go-to EDC and I take it everywhere. I've heard the Victorinox model is very good also, but I prefer the Leatherman model. I think you can't go wrong with either one, it's just a personal preference.

    Im not a tradie, I have most leatherman models, and the P4 I just love it. Its so much easier to carry in pocket over a surge. I mostly fix things around home and kids toys etc, bikes and scooters. Pliers are needed but I dont need something super heavy duty. I just love how the free opens easy one handed while holding something with other hand. Love it. If I need anything stronger then the leatherman I go to the toolbox. Multitools to me are a backup to actual tools. Great video as always.

    Good honest review, taking a perspective outside your specific use case. I picked up the Free P4 recently and really like it so far. It's really nice to be able to get to the tools without opening the pliers up. I also have the Surge and older Wave (non plus) with the bit kit. For me, I've never had to switch the bits out often, so for now anyway, the P4 is on my hip, the Surge with extra bits in my backpack in case I do need something from the extra bits, and the Wave is in the truck. I'm an IT guy though, and woodwork in by basement shop when not in the office. I carry the P4 and Victorinox Cybertool, which is a good combo for my use case. In my shop most of the tools I need are within a few feet of me.
    It was being in IT though why I started carry a multitool. I found I needed something handy to loosen and tighten retention screws on switch modules, etc in the datacenter (for instance). I've carried one ever since. - Jim

      Jim, I appreciate you sharing your perspective. It sounds like you have found yourself a very solid combination with the P4 and Cybertool. My perspective is from an industrial application, hence the reason I tend to gravitate more to heavier duty multi tools and tools in general for that matter. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and for watching. I hope you'll take the time to view some of my other videos as well.

    I would add that when the P4 is clipped on my front pocket it is thinner, so my hand can more easily get to other things in my pocket. Also, the handles do not show scratches on the surface like most other multi-tools. The only modification I have made to my P4 is that I ground down the back edge of the awl into a point.
    Also, Clay Hayes used and abused his P4 in season 8 of the survival show 'Alone'. And he still uses the same P4 in very hard circumstances to this day. I has held up like a champ. And the knife is fun and easy to deploy and use. Kudos to Leatherman!

    Hvac guy myself, but I think actually a multitool is very suited for HVAC units. Aside from cutting pipe,the leatherman with the hacksaw could prob handle that too. and backing out the main refrigerant valves. Which I've found the Gerber centerdrive can sometimes do with a bit - socket adapter. You can fully access and service most units with just a multitool and a multimeter.
    Good review as well, that's a nice looking tool

    I work maintenance and hvac... this review helped. I have a Surge right now. I always want to upgraded my game and since I have a carry tool bag, i think i will consider trying this to save time for quick work orders. Using the surge to change bit and a bit extender, wire strippers, can opener, blah blah. I could just walk to my bag get my proper tools. Im not sure how you use your Surge for "heavy" applications ( big jobs you have your tools with you and power) but I see you point. All those jobs cutting paracord, putting in hookers screws, cutting rope, and opening up a can of tuna fish. If your really on that leatherman surge for "heavy applications" either you take way to long to do your job and give poor product or you dont have tools and still take too long to do your project. Never used the P4 but quick accessibility with fast centered motion is what's needed for a multi tool. And please spring load all of them. Figure out how to use that magnetic shit to do it. Grip is horrible. I love my Surge though. I just wish i didnt have to have more pockets to carry other shit to compensate. Make every tool work like a real tool and make it quicker then taking 2 steps to walk over and get something way cheaper and better for the job.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  5 років тому +1

      To answer your question about what I consider “heavy duty use”, I will give you a couple of examples. On location we get a lot of steel orders that are bundled with #9 wire. The Surge will rip right through those heavy gauge tie wires. I use the Surge to snap metal banding on pallets. The diamond file gets used often to dress HSS drill bits. I use the pliers to back up bolts up to 1/2” in size that I tighten with an impact on occasion. Scissors are used for mostly mundane tasks. Wire stripper gets used when I’m away from my tool trailer. Large screwdriver gets used often for opening up control panels. There are a variety of tasks that I use the Surge on in any given day. Some of those tasks can be handled by lighter duty multi tools. As far as having regular tools, I absolutely do. I do find it incredibly convenient to have my Surge on my hip at all times though. I’ll just say, paracord cutting is the least of my worries on any given day.

    Hi,
    Just a quick update about the package opener on P2/P4. I have slightly modified mine, which seems to have improved it a lot. It is still not great, but the fix was very easy to do and the effect was appreciable. Part of the problem seems to have been that piercing the material you want to cut was difficult. This makes sense because if you look closely, the point you’d naturally use for piercing e.g. clamshell packaging is actually very rounded. By making the whole implement about a millimetre or so shorter, you remove that rounded edge which leaves a more acute point. I simply used my Dremel to do this, and that helped a lot. Will now use it for some time to see if further modification is necessary.

      @@txtoolcrib I’ve now tried this fix for a few days, and it has been so good that I have concluded no further modification is needed.
      I’m not sure I want to say the package opener now is as good as the Wingman’s, but it is actually useful as a package opener. I’m amazed at how much of a difference this tiny tweak made (for me).
      It’d be interesting to hear your experience with this fix?

    I also own the leatherman surge with all the bit kits I just feel like it’s a little clunky. I’m so torn between the P4 and the Surge. I like the toolset and ergos on the P4 but I really don’t like the magnets. I need a wave or surge with the P4 tool configuration. Have you had a problem with metal shavings getting stuck to the magnets?

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  4 роки тому +1

      I have had problems with the magnets, but I also work around steel pretty much on a daily basis. Metal dust will collect against the magnets and against any of the tools that come into contact with metallic dust. It can be cleaned fairly easily with just a compressor shot of air, but it is tedious. Now if you don’t work around metal, it would probably work just fine.

    My biggest complaint with this one is the price. It's a hard sell to convince me that this tool is worth $40-ish more than the Wave + or $20-ish more than the Surge. Even the Charge + at the same price would be more compelling to me. I certainly appreciate you trying to look at the other side, but I just don't see the value compared to their other models. It seems like a Wingman redesigned with magnets.
    The one major thing I do like is the Free series has straight sides like the Rebar and ST (my personal favorites due to the compact size vs their function). I don't particularly care for the top of the blade protruding, but the handle shape is nice. There... that's my attempt at finding something I like about them... it's all I got and it kinda hurt. lol

      @magicdave93 5 років тому

      Well in my case it won’t get hard use and it’s light and easy to carry. I like the scissors, box opener and the blade also all the tools are easily accessible. I agree with you on the price but I guess it’s to do with the magnetic architecture.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  5 років тому +2

      That seems a little far-fetched for me. Magnets don’t cost that much. The magnets that are going into these multi tools are pretty weak as well, so I wouldn’t think it should affect the price that much. I think leatherman is just trying to maximize their profit because of the new styling of this tool. But then again that’s just a personal opinion.

It didn’t bend, it snapped off. I didn’t use a lot of pressure either. Add $15 in shipping to the $140 and it’s covered. I never had to use a Leatherman warranty, and I have a PST, Signal, Surge and MUT. I had to use it for the P4 after 30 days. I’m not sure how I’ll use it now. I have a little bit of trouble getting to my pliers one handed. I always feel like I'm doing something wrong or that I'm about to break the tool, because there's a little bit of play in the handles. How can I fix it? The pinch doesn't seem to work.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  3 роки тому

      It seems unusual that they are not opening smoothly for you. I haven’t encountered that problem with these models. The play that you feel in the handles is inherent to the design, unfortunately there’s not much you can do about it.

    This has solid potential. However, you can't have metal file because of magnets. Only wood file. Which is limiting from the get go. Plus... Tool selection is a big drawback. Not how I would have done it. Even the serrated blade is debatable for me. Sidekick did it the best. I never needed a full size serrated blade. They really need a 2.0 of this one. It's a nice idea, it's a looker, just seems like it was not thought out all that well.

    The Free P4 having a Bit-Driver would be an obvious thing to add? I owned a Wingman, Wave and Surge. The Wave mostly spoiled me because i used it for several years with its multi-bit capability. The Free P4 at $169 just a bit too expensive and without the Bit-Driver. There's a lot of reviews out there, I'll be waiting for the "after 1 year" review of the P4 and see how people think of it then.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  5 років тому

      I put the Wave and FREE P4 head to head. While the FREE has a couple of strong points, I think the Wave is the better all around multi tool. I think it boils down to how you use your multi tool. That will be the determining factor as to which one is right for you.

    First, I want to start off by not liking the new Free P series at all, for reasons already stated by Ben and in his other reviews - the lack of a bit holder, respectively a mini screwdriver. There is a decisive step backwards from the development of Leatherman so far. Even adding these tools someday, this multitool will remain catchy, because it has actually offered nothing new to users other than free access to one-handed tools. As a cyclist, I need a bit holder constantly to keep my bike running, so it's not a whim. That's why I refrained from getting one. In Europe, these instruments are still overprised - new from the store retails for € 180-185. So I ordered one that was supposed to be a little used for € 105 as much as I had in the collection. When I receive it, I will share my impressions! Thanks Ben for his wish to look at this topic from around the corner!

      If you need a bit driver or additional bits why a multi tool in the first place? just get a screwdriver with bits? Multi tools are just that a tool you use in a pinch if you want them to cover every situation they will always be flawed and everyone has different requirements. For me the P2 is perfect and is the tool i have pretty much been waiting fo,r a straight blade and better file would have been nice but other than that it is all good. The Machining engineering and overall finish of the Free series is something else compared to other Multi tools,

      TX Tool Crib The Surge is a tough act to follow, imo. I’m just trying to be optimistic. Haha!
      My Surge is the only one of all the Leatherman and Vicrorinox tools I have that has my initials engraved. That’s how much I like it.
      I think it’d be a tougher decision if the P4 had access to bits.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  5 років тому

      Now that is a valid point. I think a lot of people probably feel the same way. While I see other issues with the P4 and P2 on a personal level, the fact that they eliminated the bit exchanger on these models was my biggest disappointment with the new design. I really think they took a step backwards by doing that. I have heard more requests for the bit exchanger in the new FREE models than any other complaint.

    The juice blade has been ground down from the original ! I have no idea why Leatherman went with this , the original blade is legal here in the UK as the law is for none locking blade no longer than three inches cutting length, the tang is not included in the blade length!
    I wonder if Leatherman just cut it back to remove the delicate tip of the blade ? The y do snap very easy?
    I have had all the juice lines, and for me the kf4 was the worst model of the line up ,no bottle or can opener no scissors!
    I guess that's why it went years ago?

    One handed??? Overrated. Gimmick.
    The tool set in the Wave is simply unparalleled, the serrated blade, two stage file are full length, the scissors are small and precise and sharp, then there’s the versatility of the bit driver - capable, practical, efficient, the Wave is a much better multi tool.

      I agree completely. I still can’t shake the urge to give a P4 or P2 a shot. There is a gentleman, ZAP wizard, he makes a bit holder for the Free. I don’t want a Free because it offers me nothing (I think). But, I hate to be so critical of something I don’t have.
