The day Leatherman allows you to custom build a multitool with the tools you actually want... *sigh*
They would probably cost at least double as much, because they’d probably have to have physical labor added that isn’t already in their cost of production. Economies of scale, etc.
@@chuckhightower2730 People would pay it though, myself included.
@@Plunz I’m not saying I wouldn’t, but they have to make the decision of whether or not it is a financially feasible and marketable service
That's the part that sucks. I'm pretty sure they 'have' weighed the options and already came to the decision not to do it. It's a shame.
@@chuckhightower2730 They definitely already have and decided it wasn't.
I see why the P2 is so expensive now. Imagine trying to put those damn washers in at the factory.
If only someone designed a multi-tool made to be customized 😉
Send this man a product yo 😂
SOG can be customized, the warranty sucks though. I recommend the Ozark trail Multiforce, inexpensive and no worries.
Genius
@@excat true
@@excat I literally argued with the video production company about that line!😅 they assured me it was the best way to phrase it for the masses. Handles and most the tools are 17-4 PH, blade is 440c. Upgrade options down the line for S30V. 🤙 Hope the marketing lingo didn't put you off too much!
A suggestion... I came up with the idea to align everything by using a small piece of string. (Like a single strand of paracord core.) Thread everything onto the string such as, scale, liner, washer, blade, washer liner, scale. Pull both ends of the string to align all the pieces in between the scales. I do this every time I take my bugout apart for cleaning. Pop out pivot, replace with string, clean, reassemble, use string to line everything up, pop pin back in. BONUS: You literally can't drop/lose the tiny washers if you tie the string ends together.
damn thats high key smart as shit. you in IT or an electrician or somethin ?

Or use a punch as a slave pin
I've actually said before that Leatherman should simply let you customize your multi tool how you want. One person said that it wouldn't be possible to have every tool combo due to the different sizes and shapes. So because they couldn't have EVERY possible combination, it's not worth doing.
I very much disagree with that. I think it's better to have a lot of customization options, instead of none.
If GOAT Tools is successful, Leatheman will likely respond with a modular / customizable tool. Is anyone aware of any other modular multi-tools?
That would be a dream
@@stevemartyn3138more made in China garbage that’s flooding the desk jockey edc market?
I'm so glad you didn't delete this video. I've taken apart 3 bugouts so moding a Leatherman should be fun. Wish me luck
Your patience is amazing. That leatherman would have been airborne if I was trying to reassemble it with all that drama
I did this mod to my p2 a few months back (the leatherman bit one) and have been loving it. I work in the IT field, so the p2 is damn near perfect for me now with that mod, leatherman bit-kit, and the new ratchet! The combo blade is a non issue for me since I usually have my benchmade 940 with me. Great vid, sir.
I just bought a 1/4" socket with a 1/4" drive. Fits neatly over the phillips and flat head driver. Now I can fit any 1/4" bit. Easy to carry along with all extra bits required.
Was running out of things to watch on youtube perfect timing!
I had the wave and sold it for a P2! AND I love it for my style of edc! I actually purchased this insert along with the new leatherman ratchet! It’s going to be $ for my edc!
I don't get the need for a Leatherman to have changeable bits. The point of a multitool is to have the most commonly needed tools, most of the time. If I'm carrying more than the leatherman itself, as in, extra bits, then I might as well also carry a small ratchet or driver. If I need anything other than a flathead of phillips then it's not a job for the leatherman anyways. As you pointed out here, with this mod you're only carrying the phillips at all times, so you've given up the flathead in exchange for being able to carry more bits with you. I much prefer the stock P2/P4 solution. The tools are well shapes, work well, and cannot fall out and become lost.
That said I do appreciate the work Zapwizard has done, more customization options is always a good thing. His scalpel mount option is really appealing. Worth checking out his youtube channel.
100% agree on serrated blades. Never needed or wanted to have one with me all the time.
I totally agree. If I have two swap bits I might as well grab my 901 one ratchet for you in a drill
That intro B-roll is BEAUTIFUL
I was screaming at the start of this video "Read the Product Description" he lays out everything there about how to install and use them!
I love the fact that this experiment worked out to about a B- at best, and yet you still shared the video.
This was great, I don’t think leatherman would advise it but I use the pliers to pry things apart and the amount of force you can convey through them is pretty substantial, I have since stopped carrying them and moved to 4LR vice-grips. Love this community.
I love the experimentation and sharing the mixed results. Kudos
I saw these bits a while back , the videos I watched from the person who designed them does indeed put magnet down in the hole of the bit itself .
It's cool you tried it. I'm waiting on a new P series with updated tools before I upgrade my Leatherman
I have and carry both the P4 and the Surge. I love them both. The P4 is part of my edc on my days off and during work days it the almighty Surge. Gr8 vid. 🇺🇸
I became obsessed with serrated blades since I found out they cut rope extremely well, now I EDC a leatherman surge, a straight blade knife and a serrated blade knife.
This definitely gives me some ideas as to how I could tinker with my Leatherman.
Thanks! This was helpful... I'm really glad you posted the disassembly footage.
Just in case this helps. When I put a multitool back together that last washer is the most difficult to get on. The easiest way I have found is by having the pivot just blow where the washer would go then use tweezers to push the washer in the general area it needs to be. I then put the tweezers in the pivot hole and catch the center of the washer. This allows me to pull the washer directly where I need it to be with little fighting. I can also always explain more and send picture in the discord.
Love it, keep on working on em.
Thanks, you made up my mind. I'm definitely not messing with my P2.
Another awesome vid! It's cool to see someone else mod their stuff the same way you mod your own things.
I think you are on to something, leather man should make interchangeable parts to make the exact tool functions desired. 👍
This entire video hits really hard..I came into ALL the same issues with mine. Starting with not having 2 t9's lmao. Couldnt get the 3D printed thumb studs to stay, I don't even think I realized it was a MINI bit holder when i bought it..also scooped the proper magnets which were a B*tch to get in that tiny little shaft! 🤣 going to try to tackle it again this year lmfao 4 years later..
I went for the p4 because the combo blade on p2, I'm totally on board. The only draw back is the size and weight of the thing.... So it mostly lives in the EDC tool pouch, and back in my pocket is my trusty juice s2. I find it to be a very good EDC tool and on most days it's all I need. Thanks again for the great video and for taking the time👍
Good stuff Taylor! Thanks for sharing!
What is that pad you’re working to keep the stuff altogether? Pretty neat. Hehe.
I have the p4 I actually like it carry it everyday. I'm a painter so the pry bar is nice for opening cans if I need it the Philips an flat heads are good for small stuff like remove a drywall scerw or faceplates. When folded one end has a flat pommel I use to bang can lids shut. Best part is I can grab it from my belt one handed whip out any tool an use it without using my other hand. I've enjoyed it for the last year ive had it.
That tool you removed along with the Phillips screwdriver is a combination package opener / pry tool. The three slotted screwdrivers are all in the other handle.
I have the stammer hammer on my skeletool. Love it.
Well done 👍! Great modification!
Serrations suck for my uses. I like your mod to make something that works for you. I'd take the extra serrated blade to my belt sander and turn it into a Texas Toothpick and resharpen it for something different and light weight. I have modded a socket with neodymium magnets to hold micro bits and I ended up using 2 magnets together to have enough holding force. Press fitting might crack the magnet if to big. I ordered a bunch of different sizes and thicknesses to have for future projects so I was able to pick the right combination. I lightly sanded the magnets and inside the socket with rough sand paper and epoxied into the socket and that seemed to work well. Scratching the surface of anything will help the epoxy hold as the scratches get filled in and helps it lock the epoxy in place if between something.
Great video! Do these mods fit the Free K models as well?
Thanks. Can i use that adaptor to my sidekick?
Because anyone who is into EDC needs YET ANOTHER bottle opener. Great video, may look into mods for my Sidekick.
What about can l openers on them they're almost useless
brave man, and finicky; I too like the un-serrated edge
I absolutely love the surge.
Your content is so well done
Just recently got hooked on your videos and love all you content! I'm wondering if you have any cool ideas for what kind of bag/case you could recommend to hold small EDC items (knife, pen, bandages, oligh...) in the glove box or armrest of my car? My old Ziploc bag just won't do anymore since I've seen your channel!!! Thank you very much! Cheers!
Awesome video, I was wondering about doing something similar, but I think I’ll stick with carrying a Signal.
who's bit driver are you using for the tear down? That custom driver just looks beefy as hell! Made me want it.
Best thing in this video is that Marathon TSAR on the Wrist! My ultimate watch right there
Hi. Thank you for the video. I have an older wave that i wanna change out the pliers from a rebar( had to get special wrenches for the rebar) they worked great! Wondering if you or anyone can tell me what size the security torque screws are on my wave and recommend a good one so it doesn’t twist on me so i can change these out? Thank you. Have a good night
I'm looking into getting a half decent knife and I am undecided between the CIVIVi Brazen and CJRB Crag. I would like to know what others have to say.
could i replace the micro ruler and wierd awl on my p4 with the bit adapter instead of replacing the philips and flathead?
Thanks for your honesty.
I have the Free T-4 and the Gerber Armbar drive as my EDC, and I love them. I do wish the Armbar had a pocket clip tho.
Can i know what is the watch youre wearin? Looks good. 😊
Thanks a lot! Now I need a modded Free P2 in my life. 😆
Could you do a review of the leatherman ratcheting driver. Wondering about the quality
I blade swapped my plain and serrated on my P4 to make it left handed.
Where did you get the brass? handheld bit driver from, please?
Eres un gran hombre. Bravo . Excelente trabajo.
I have a P4, Surge, and Charge TTI. I carry the P4 and the Charge. The Surge stays in my truck. The issue you tackle in this video is the only issue I have with the P4 and P2. Interchangeable bit option. I love having that on the other two models I own. I'm going to give this mod a shot. I'll probably stick with the flat bits provided by Leatherman. Thanks for posting this! Love your channel, btw!
I edc the surge every day and find a use for it on the daily. Update I bent the edge on my p2 cutting a plastic high tension ziptie... the metal on the blade is very soft...
The gerber center drive, is just the best.
Soooo who make the brass bit driver that you are using to take apart the leathermans?
I’ve got a Free P4 and absolutely love it. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.
I want to replace the serrated blade on my Free P2 with a saw. Where can I get one??
Nice brand new drill
The bottle opener hook opening on the bottle opener/Phillips head on the p4 fits around 1/4 bit like a wrench on a nut. It’s not super easy to use, but it does work... I assume it’s by design, but don’t know for sure
What is the name of that screw driver with the bering on the end?
What bit driver is that silver one? I want one
I think the Free P4 is the prefect EDC full sized multi tool. The vast majority won't need more than a flat or Philips head. They also make for exceptional pry tool and bottle cap opener. I do wish the blade was 154cm and more flush.
I also love my Charge TTI but got rid of the small bit driver, scissors and flat head. Swapped them for a large bit driver(put a glass breaker) and Awl.
I did not know this was a thing game changer thanks my guy I liked this video so hard I broke my mouse!
If it wasn’t for the irritating tabs on the handles I would’ve kept and love my P2. My Wave is still cool but I recently got the Victorinox SwissTool Spirit and I love it!
What size magnet did you use?
I really want to do this to the opposite side of my P2. Use those 2 alot. Never use those other 4. Love the tool otherwise. Thanks for sharing!
I've used leatherman for 25 years and I've switched to gerber center drive for about three months now and I've given my 10 year old son my leatherman wave. Give gerber a shot, you'll like it. For me it does alot of whati need for my profession as a maintenance supervisor and now a full time HVACR technician. you'll be happy I think.
I have one. It’s alright. I prefer Leatherman
Will they work on the Leatherman Free K4?
I have a P4, and did a bit mod. A but socket fits on the driver tools, some filing on the flat head.
PS the serrated blade can be a tanto blade.
Can you imagine a Taylor Martin signature Leatherman Free. That would be wild.
Has anyone found a source to buy individual leatherman parts, I just want Free P2 but the full blade from the P4?
My Leatherman Charge is on my desk, so I'm constantly fidgeting with it (like right now), pulling the pocket clip on and off. Not sure why I keep it on (other than the fidget factor), I don't think I've ever worn it on a belt or pocket ... and never strapped the leather case through a belt loop. Just a little too big for that, but perfect for a backpack, car glove box, etc. The Free looks interesting though, and I've been looking for a good edc multi-tool.
the tension on the flat bit driver is adjustable. push the sides in to tighten out to loosen. we need a quick access 4mm bit holder. belt Carrie
Love the mod, I carry my LE Surge on my belt (TOK) so it's fine for me. Glad you improved your EDC.
What screwdriver is that? Love it.
Looks similar to the scout leather co driver, but I guess it's from a custom maker from Instagram brasswerx, I might be wrong tho..
If you turn that drill that you opened the hole up with around backwards, you can use it as a guide to line all the tools and bushings/liners up… then just slowly push it out from the other side with the pin
Does anyone know if these could be installed on a Leatherman Crunch?
What Jacket are you wearing in the intro?
I have carried everyday the Leatherman Wave with the 22 Leatherman bits, a Fisher Space Pen, and FourSevens Preon P1 in a holster for a decade or 2. The only issue is that Leatherman no longer makes the holster. When I lost a pen and flashlight because the elastic straps were worn out I purchased a Chinese made copy. The elastic straps/loops are looser - should last longer. However, the leather belt loop/snap cover did not even last a year. Fortunately Utica Shoe repaired it with better leather for ten or twenty bucks.
How can you edc a P2 while I often feel skeletool is to heavy to edc.
You have the option now to use the flat bit ratcheting extension. Keep that in mind. More options.
This was definitely not a waste of your time, especially since Leatherman just released a new ratchet driver that uses both their bits and standard 1/4inch.
Baron's Man Cave in Memphis, Tennessee now carries Finch knives if anyone is trying to see them in person.
Looks like you should replace that knife with a fold out bit holder for the 2d bits if that's possible
I agree serations are not that useful for my edc as well.
BUT I love my P4 for my job. More times than not, working as a diesel mechanic, I find my self with only one free hand. Holding up a big hydraulic line, wires, etc. So being able to flip open my P4 pliers or tools with one easy motion is a LIFESAVER.
And tbh, it's fun to flip around.
Taylor, print a small holder for the most used bits for the flat bits. I find them very useful.
A single holder the bits come with fits fine in my wallet.
Can I put a side clip on super tool 300
Seems to me having a feeler guage to stick in next to the washer would prevent it from slipping away towards the magnet
How can I get these 3D printed components?
Put a strong neodymium magnet in your tweezers to overcome the magnet in the Leatherman. Once you start the screws in the washers put away the tweezers.
You should get the thumb studs from shapeways it will stay on by two small screws t
what about bit storage inside the handle
Best Damn EDC Have you or could you do a all brass EDC?
possibly a dumb question: are those 3D printed bit driver parts metal or plastic?
