it would be cool if you could do an a la carte leatherman, pick the tools you want and assemble yourself
That would be awesome
No doubt...I'd honestly pay $170 for an a la carte Free
They probably haven't done it yet because it would make the warranty process harder. They would have a tough time knowing if it was a factory custom tool, or customer made custom tool.
@@Brandon_Neil stamp a small custom stamp in all the parts? Or still make all the custom choices unique to that knife only or serial number each part to that knife.
It will most likely never happen because it will hurt the company real bad. All the other products will never sell and people won't be buying more tools. Or it should be really really expensive.
I talked with Leatherman online and asked them were I could buy a pocket clip for the P4. They sent me one ☝🏻 at no additional cost. FYI
The serated blade on the wave has jimping on the spine 👍🏻
I was just about to add the same comment. :)
@iPac9mm I didn't miss it. I've known about it for years. But it's hardly worth mentioning since it's easier to overlook when grabbing than it is to notice it. The entire point, regardless, is how much easier the Free series is to index than the Wave.
Yep as soon as he said it i went to comments.. lol
All good points. I don’t like the idea of a combo blade either. Also the P2 comes with a pocket clip. What’s up with that? Maybe they feel the extra width of the P4 makes it less likely to be used with a pocket clip? But it seems so minimal and cheap of them not to include it with the P4. The issues with the thinner stock and file seem very relevant also. These are some glaring deficiencies that I think would keep me from purchasing. I watched another reviewer and think the surge is where I’d park my money. Yeah it’s a bigger tool but I believe it’s only 4.5” long closed.
Side note, please stop the “subliminal” text flashes. Makes the video longer when I have to rewind to see if I missed something pertinent.
yes! I can't believe so many people don't know this.
25 year warranty...use it for your broken failed wave. C'mon man.
Ok Joe Biden
The WAVE has both fine edge and the fully serrated blade. The outside of the serrated blade has notches ground into it so YOU KNOW which blade you want without looking or in total darkness. Of course the pocket clip help too.
Best part about the P4 is that all the tolls are accessible in the closed position, Amazing!! The downside is the placement of the serrated blade (the serrated and saw should be swapped as serrated would be used a lot more than a saw) AND the file... love the large file on the Wave+.
Amazing review and comparison!!
I love my interchangeable bit. My charge gets daily use and honestly it saves me from running back to my tool bag when it's always on my hip.
I have to say I was pretty excited about P4 at first but with no bit holder or full size file I've decided to wait. I carry a Surge everyday and don't see that changing. I think Leatherman is on to something just need more time to get it right.
Yea once they release their interchangeable bit driver for the P4 it will be a lot better for most people I think.
I love my Leatherman Wave
Leatherman is now shipping pocket clips to those that bought the p4 from them. Mine is on the way
Fantastic review. I'm glad I upgraded to the wave +.
I’ll save you 28 mins. Pass on the P2 & 4. Overpriced.
and we're stuck at that price until the patent on that deployment method expires, only competition will drive the price down
In Germany its 199€ for the P4 so about 220$ absolutly crazy
@@r0m4n70 in Australia $299 in most big stores for the P4
It looks like they have the same tool set from the wingman or the sidekick. $140?
Bunch of cheap ass wieners.
the free are cool as hell, but I'll stick with my wave.
I must say TM, this is the best presented reviews I've seen so far in all UA-cam reviewers. You definitely stepped up brother. Catch you later from Australia.
Great video. I agree with what you said about being "so close". Overall the Free platform is ingenious -- a potential game changer. Now it just needs better implementation. I hope Leatherman is listening to feedback like yours.
I haven’t handled one yet, so I can’t speak to quality.
BUT, I love, love, love the concept. I’ve always carried Rebar or Swisstool Spirit, or ST300 as I always felt the bits were gimmicky. Not deep enough to reach in deep and too weak for heavy use.
I love that this, in my opinion, doesn’t have bits. It’s back to the fundamentals of what a multi-tool should be all with outside tool access. Love, love, love it.
Great review! I'm not sold on the free series either. I like the new bells and whistled but the wave seems like a more solid multitool overall
I still have my Original Wave I bought in 1999 for aviation school and it is still solid and functions flawlessly.
Honestly after watching this, I'm even more happy I decided to buy a Wave+ the other day over the P4
Great comparison review sir! I own them both...actually as a MT collector I own most Leatherman models. I think if the P4 had a full size file it would be much better. I am anxious for the 2nd generation of Free Series to come out!
Really great and thorough review. Going to stick with my Sidekick for a while, I guess, until they iron out the kinks on this new design. The P4 does have nice aesthetics, though. And having all the tools accessible from the outside seems beneficial.
Nice video Taylor. I think what you have here is a new design-foundation, but with a need in improvement to what's built upon that foundation. Leatherman seems to be on to the right track: one-handed operation. If they can get their tool selection, quality control, and price more dialed in (and yeah, that pocket clip for sure), then I think they'll have something great. Glad they're taking a step in a new direction, just need to make sure it's on sure-footing.
Very helpful review...almost pulled the trigger on the p4. I will wait now..I'm a big surge fan anyway.
I have to point something out about the Wave I'm not so sure many people noticed. If you're trying to figure out which blade you're about to open, look on the top/spine of the blade close to the hinge. The straight blade is smooth where as the serrated blade has a few ribs/notches on the top/spine of the blade. You can distinguish the blade by those markings. Also, when I pull out my Wave it's with the opening of the tool facing upwards out of the sheath which allows me to see the bit driver. The bit driver has the straight blade on it where as the other half of the tool has the serrated blade and saw. Here's a question I have to fire back at you, how do you store your multitool or do you just put it away without thinking about it's orientation?
I appreciate the video. I bought a brand new P2 at a flea market for $50. Lucky find for sure. I was convinced that I needed the P4 over the wave plus, but you’re right. Not a lot of advantage for the difference in price. I’m pretty certain that the wave plus is the right choice for me. The P2 is so smooth, but the file and little screwdriver would be a bigger benefit for me.
I think the bigger scissors are a great improvement. That they come out of the tool closed rather than open is a significant improvement to my mind. Certainly to my fingers opening sharp scissors that have exposed blades on stiff tools.
hmm' I'd probably skip the P4, and look at the K4 or even the T4. Thanks for the time you put in, quite practical.
Thanks for the honest review, Taylor. I was on the fence initially, but I'm going to stick with my Wave and Skeletool. The fact that the P4 isn't compatible with the bit kit is a hard pass for me. Carry on brother.
I have bought 3 Leatherman wave’s for $17.00 on clearance at a big box store. They are great.
Oh wow, great find. Jealous over here.
I just ordered a P4 and am having a little buyer’s remorse after watching this video. The bit kit, small screw driver, and large file all seem like very useful options. My current Leatherman is like 20 years old and while not abused, is a pain to access the tools. I hope this is better.
I’m thinking about buying the P4 soon, how do you like it after 2 years? Can you still recommend it?
Have bought at least 10 leatherman (wave, charge and surge). I use them everyday. The loose hinge is the biggest problem followed by the tip of the pliers getting caught in the handle when closing (exp the charge)
I agree the p4 needs the changes suggested in this review. The bit holder is genius and the large file is important. I'm confident leatherman will get this sorted...
Other than the fixed flathead driver directly next to the Phillips driver (why not just use the changeable bit driver?) i think the tool looks great. I have a wave+, and cant see anything the new tool would offer me so i wont be upgrading, but if i didnt have the wave i would really have to consider this.
What we really need, is for Leatherman to offer custom tools. i would pay a premium to have a 100% useable tool for me. Something with no wasted slots like the can opener, saw, 2nd flathead etc. I want a wave layout with an Awl, larger scissors etc. everyone has a different ideal layout, and they could capitalize on that. They would be the only manufacture doing it
Who is gonna design that feat of engineering?
Great video! I do carry the wave and have been thinking about the upgrade.
Thanks for the review. I have an original Wave (the one before the ones in this video) and debated replacing it, but found nothing else really fitting what I want for carry. I'm probably going to stick with the Wave as it does everything else I typically need and do a Surge with the bit kit to upgrade the tool kit on my motorcycle - someone at Kawasaki must have had a twisted sense of humor to call what they included the "tool kit" (the bike is my daily driver and I go on several thousand mile trips on it, too, hence wanting something better there.)
Being able to identify the blades by feel is the one thing I dislike about mine. With no belt clip on that model my solution has been to make sure I put it into the belt pouch the same way each time.
WHAT, no interchangeable bit holder?! That changed my mind. I wish they just made a customiseable option to have whatever tools you want.
Catrik that is also the biggest downside of the Free p4 . And its something i really dont understand. To me iT is a big step back from What they had with the wave
Ppl will just take bit driver, file, saw, scissors and main blade and that would be the only thing leatherman would manage to sell. So obviously they wont.
Think about it. The "Wave", IS better. You can carry a whole lot of jig-saw "T" handed blades with You, and to sharpen the main blade, You can always release the diamond file, and use that, for resharpening. Anyway, thanks...
I think, that the video was great. I've hit both, the "like", and "subscribe" buttons.
Best wishes from Norway, Sir!
(Of course, I'm a veteran from the Norwegian Army, and I've been serving inside Norway, and for the United Nation, too. One period in Lebanon, and one period in the former Yugoslavian republic of Bosnia-Hercegovina. Proud to say, NEARLY made in the U.S.A!😉👍)
I made a little discovery while fidgeting with my P4 and watching this video. I too was disappointed that Leatherman did not include a bit driver on the P4. I would gladly give up the saw blade for a bit driver but others might disagree. Anyways...I took my ratcheting bit driver from my Wave + accessories and tried to find a place to secure it on the P4 (remembering the power pint end slot), I looked at that first. Well check this out...if you pull the blade locking tab on the P4 away from the frame you can slide your ratcheting extension into the slot you create and it actually locks in. Then you can use your ratchet driver as 90 degree offset, giving you more torque to get out uncooperative hardware. I am stoked!!!
I Love My Leatherman Wave & Charge TTI one of them always with me .
I’ve used both a lot but I think that the free is better than the wave. Ya, I’m disappointed in the bit kit but I have a small bit driver that fits with the leatherman bits and that driver fits on the screwdriver. The free is amazing and I really recommend it.
Clip is coming in the mail for free on the P4... just have to get a hold of them and they will send it out
Don't be sorry about the 140$, here in Austria it is still not available and the price is 219,95€!
Awesome video and thank you for your work
I just want to say I like your studio setup.
Like the p4 a few sharp points, few other minor grievances but all in all pretty good.
Returned my p4 for a surge and a bit extender. How many flat heads do you need? The p4 is a very redundant multitool
i have been waiting for your coverage of the free before i made a purchasing decision =) thanks for making the video
I own a surge as well as a bit kit. While I love the idea of one handed opening and magnets, I will not purchase until they introduce a model that utilizes the bit kit. Super handy tool for an electrician such as myself.
Good review, I love love love the file on my wave probably won’t buy the free for that reason but I do like the one hand opening, my old sog power pliers had that feature.
Been using my Leatherman Pulse for almost twenty years. It has a really complete set of tools (with a full sized file amongst them) and it has never failed me. So for now, no Free for me.
For the wave,+, there is a wavy line on the serrated blade. So is possible the tell whether it is serrated blade or normal blade without pulling it out.
I got one of these for my brother in law for his birthday, I have a Leatherman Surge it has the most tools but is based off of the the Wave. After briefly playing around with the P4 Free I like it. I’ll probably get my own. They’re supposed to have a pocket clip available online. But I really love the little click when you open the pliers. The only complaints I would have with this tool the can opener isn’t as good as my Surge. I wish they would have changed the fixed phillips head for a bit driver, would have opened the possibility of other task.
Totally agreed!
I went camping a little while ago with some folks, one of whom had a P4.. My original opinion still stands: the P2 and P4 series are just very expensive toys. They do, however, have some very amusing features. The "file" and "ruler" are hilarious.
In terms of the Free and the accessibility of the tools, note that you mentioned the ease of use on your new Wave vs old. Would it be difficult to rate the Free accurately since you have a new unit unaffected by rust?
Personally, I use the Surge with the magnetic clip from RAE Gear USA. That allows me to open the surge one handed. $30, $35 with space for the Bit Kit.
Here in the uk I can get a wave + for $131 BUT a Free p4 costs $248.............NO BRAINER.........Great vid Taylor
120€ For wave+, and 200€ for P4 in Finland. I will stick to my 10year old swistool X, still going strong.
Not adding the bit driver was a tremendous oversight. I also agree with pretty much everything else in this video. This tool could have been so much better...
Got a 12 year old leatherman wave with lots of rust and veeery gritty tool opening. Disasembled it, cleaned it, soaked it in wd40 and tuned the screws. Works better than new.
I agree pretty much with your overall assessment: On the P2, lose the partially serrated blade and offer it with a fine edge blade.
The P4 needs the bit holder from the wave and it needs a full size file. The pocket clip/lanyard hole should come standard with any $100+ MT, as should the sheath. Thank You for a well done review.
The lack of bit driver and pocket clip has made me return my P4 order for a Charge Plus TTI instead, and I was fortunate enough to get this at the same price point! I am not sure about the Charge cap crimper, so now I’m contemplating retrofitting my Rebar pliers and awl, though its black. There just doesn’t seem to be any “perfect” multitool configuration!
I don't get the excitement of a bit driver. And I don't really want a removable bit when Its designed to be flipped about.
SUBSCRIBED!! thx for the vid.
I'll take a razor sharp plain edge over a serrated "combo" blade anyday. Easier to sharpen and cuts just as well if maintained sharp. The bit kit is a must for me so for that reason, the Free P4 isn't for me. Also, 99% of the time, "one hand" operation isn't needed for me and often a tiny convenience. I just use both hands when needed to open the tool. i think I'll stick with my Surge... thanks for the awesome informative review.
Yoshi Yamamoto if you're mainly cutting fibrous materials, finish your sharpening on a coarser stone. It'll leave little teeth on the edge that'll tear through rope and similar stuff. It won't shave, but it'll cut aggressively for quite a while.
I just got the P4 yesterday and was pleased to discover a pocket clip attached to it. I got it from Dick’s Sporting Goods so I don’t know if they have one of their exclusive deals or not. Plus I had to work pretty hard to make the tools come out a little when slamming the pliers open.
Do the dimensions lend themselves to taking the full sized file from the wave and swapping it for the serrated on your p4? I do not have a P series, so I was not sure. You make a lot of valid points as to why I may want to wait anyway. Thanks!
Fun fact Taylor the leatherman wave has some jimping on the serrated blade to identify it without fumbling around with the tool
Awesome video thanks
I feel like they are kind of wasting their time with this. Tbh I think what would really benefit Leatherman, is to allow you to make your own multitool.
Have the setup on your site, and allow a bunch of different tool options and sizes. That, I would pay over a hundred dollars for.
Who's gonna design that feat of engineering?
@@fourthpanda
It wouldnt be too difficult. Simply offer a selection of tools made to fit in a lighter frame. Then a set designed for a larger model.
Let people pick and choose which tools they want, from the options available. Add in blade serrations or none, and maybe offer a higher end blade steel for extra $.
@@FidelCashflow_YT I don't think you realize how hard that would actually be, it would not just be "simple."
@@fourthpanda
Alright, explain possible problems...
@@FidelCashflow_YT This goes for everything, but engineers are given a certain amount of space to design a part, if there are interchangeable everything, then they can't be given a certain amount of space therefore making it impossible. Like a can opener will be a different thickness than file, so they can design a file thickness based on how it will fit with a can opener. If there is no guarantee which tools will fit in the tool together, then it would be impossible to be able to design said other tools.
So if it were a choice between the Free P4 or the similarly priced Charge+...
really what’s the choice?
A few remarks, the fully serated blade is awesome for cutting cardboard. Also on the Wave it's easy to know what knife is what, there are serrations on the top of the serrated knife and I've carried a Wave for 15 years (yeah every single day) and none of the tools rusted and/or are hard to get out!
2 huge problems with the Free series: no big File and no interchangable bits (and I've used those a lot)!
As for not being able to tell which blade you're getting on the wave, I engraved a few lines on the thumb release and now its very easy to tell.
I am glad I saw your review of the P2 and P4, I was going to get the P4 but now will wait a year or 2 for Leatherman to make the upgrades you are talking about. I like a full sized file and pocket clip too.
same, I was looking at these as my first ever multi-tool but I guess it's best if i just wait on it still.
Even if they were the same price I would probably still go with the wave over the free p4. Just more mobility I guess. Great layout and I pretty much always have both hands free when I need it and if I don't I can stll open everything with one hand (tho with a lot of practice and patience).
I'm getting me one ....as soon as I break my surge....I'm never getting one the surge is a beast
Yeah, the surge makes quite a good toolbox when fully kitted, and it's certainly a beast. I've had mine three years, still not broken, and I've not exactly been kind to it.
@@billythepigeon7345 i would edc the surge if it wasn't so big and heavy
@@Rikhardi it certainly makes a good boat anchor. I couldn't keep the surge on my hip in public anyway, UK laws, only slip joints are "pocket legal". Victorinox cyber tool lite is my edc.
I’ve never had a problem accessing the pliers on my Charge TTi or Juice S2 one handed. I’ve always found the Charge series to be a better choice than the Wave series.
And I think it’s obvious a Charge TTi beats a Free P4 every time and comes in a similar price.
word of poor qc travels fast. you're right for documenting it, but i would've sent it right back and hope they make it right. 👍
Thank you very helpful
On their website the P4 shows a pocket clip. I like the P4 but I think the lack of the exchangeble bit, micro screw driver, and small file are a deal breaker for me. Maybe GEN 2 will fix this.
I think they did a great job for a first attempt. Me personally, I'm just gonna wait for the price to go down and the kinks ironed out, maybe 2nd or 3rd gen before I replace my wave.
Wise advice
Great video. I got som good deals on some used multi tool now.
If you see back on sarreted blade you see the different from the plane. And then know what blade i what. 😊
on the wave plus at least, theres jimping on the spine of the serrated blade so that definitely helps with Orientation and such
It helps someone, I'm sure. But end up overlooking it every damn time. lol
oh yeah for sure it's definitely not perfect
That crap file on a $140 tool. No way.
Same file as all the other ones. Also it's actually pretty good, idk what you are talking about. Not a diamond though maybe that's what you mean.
@@fourthpanda Exactly. The full size diamond file on the wave+ is one of my favorite things about it. I just don't think I can be pleased with a multi tool without that--especially not a pricy one--It's fine and very effective.
Got a p4 and love it came with a pocket clip btw 😂 good review though
I've had a p4 for years - lost it and got a wave+, then found my p4 a few months later - I now have both.... I far prefer the free p4 and during the time when it was missing and I was carrying the wave+, I wished every time I still had my free p4.
It's just a superior tool for what I want it to do.
My p4 came with a pocket clip and my wave + has only the internal little lanyard thing (bought both at cabelas at least3 years ago for the wave+ and maybe 4-5 for the p4)
Think I'll stick with my Victorinox Swisstool X for now. Thanks for the informative review!
Same, mine is about 10y old. Spotted the P2 and P4 in store today, and fiddled with them. Walked out dissapointed. I did get new pants tough.
The original WAVE had none of the issues that the new school WAVE Plus has! I still use my old school Wave and it is great! I carry and use Rebar as well but when I want to go premium? It is the Victorinox tools hands down!
Okay no bit exchanger. No Clip. For a tool that size and price. How often did I need a torx or hexdriver and was glad to have this! Every damn Ganzo tool comes with a bitholder. And for an EDC guy like me who has the bit kit, what reason would there be to trade my trusty Titanium Charge for this? I can swing my Charge open with one hand only, trust me. Bitholder and clip will come in 2022 as the Free plus series, I guess. Plus meaning plus another 50 bucks. Better do a proper sheath to comfortably hold a full sized tool and a complete bit kit. Skinth can do it, where is the problem, Leatherman?
Excellent review 👍 For me the Wave + is the clear winner. The file with three different 3" files is a deal breaker.
I was all on-board to get a Free P4 until 12:29 where I got a good look at the internal tools. They look like Wingman tools. I find them cheap looking for something that sells for $140. The deployment method is cool; I like the one-handedness of it, but I'll keep my Wave. Too bad. Was really stoked to get one.
Agreed. That's what I thought about the toolset.
Does your saw lock drop in as far as the other tools? Mine, all the locks go almost all the way in but on the saw it's about less than half engaged. I can modify it but I don't think I need to.
The removal of the bit holder and the tiny eyeglasses screwdriver are dealbreakers for me.
SwissTool spirit still good
For those who want a clip contact Leatherman, they may send it free. I chose the P4 for the serrated blade and saw. I modded my serrated and saw blade. Using my customized Wave A+ file(154 blade and cut hook serrated). The P4 serrated and saw have a tanto shaped end, that locks them closed when pliers are opened. The serrated blade also has a utility edge tip, the point is rounded. That was filed To a True tanto point, the saw also was filed to a point and added a edge for dry wall use. One small mod too champher the sharp plier side edges so to not bite your finger when closed one handed. In conclusion the Free P4 won't replace the Wave for my work day carry, however on weekends the P4 gets it done, and fun to fidgit with.
9min 11sec: for folks wanting to know what blade they are pulling out. Serrated blade has jimping and regular blade doesn’t.
Wave is such a great tool that I’m left handed and just adapted to holding it on my right side and pulling it out with my right hand. Mine has been carried lots of years.
Love the cinematography of the opening scenes in these videos.
How about they finally offer a version for us southpaws! I had to disassemble mine and switch the blade positions which turned into an all day PITA to get the washers right... And for the cash...UPGRADE the blade steel! I spent almost the same amount on my Charge Ti and that had an s30v blade! Now I'm back to 420HC??
420 hc is fine if you have the slightest clue how to sharpen a knife I work on a farm and have never had an issue I am constantly using my blade from cutting bale wraps, cutting plastic off feed bunk, cutting string you name it yeah I might have to touch it up once or twice a week but it takes no time within 5 minutes you can get a edge you can shave with so I'd love to hear what tasks you plan on doing with this tool that a 420 hc blade wouldn't do
@@justinnelson3522 People that complain are usually the one that just collect knives and once awhile open a amazon box with a new 300$ knife in it.
@@justinnelson3522 i think what he is pointing out is for the same price the charge tti has better steel in the main blade..not that the 420HC is bad just not as good S30V. I use my multitools everyday and never had a problem with the 420 steel but at the price the P4 is better steel should be on the main blade...if he said elmax now that would be steel snobbery
the Wave/Wave+ serrated blade has a triple notch at its base, easy to tell the difference, including in the dark.
I have the surge and the p4. Personally I think the P4s goal is to make it more user friendly. The surge is equipped with much better tool set.
Love the light/MT leather holster. Is that homemade, or can you buy that somewhere?
You may have learned since 11 months ago but Tale of Knives makes them.
I think I must have got a newer version of the p4 because mine had none of the attention to quality issues that you talked about, the tools dont pop out upon hard openings the knife blade came shaving sharp out of the box and mine has a pocket clip
My concern on the P4 is how long the magnet(s) will effectively work and yes, the price. Not sure if it is worth it. I am in Canada so the difference is $60 CDN plus tax or $68. The only "upgrade" for the Wave required in my opinion is the sheath offering. The new "Ainsworth " Leather sheath is Better except the price. Offer the tool separate from the sheath and price more attractively. I sent this suggestion to Leatherman. My Wave is my EDC and suits me fine.
On the wave, there are 3 ridges on the the thumb pull for the serrated blade, the smooth blade has no ridges so you can tell from the closed position.
I forgot to mention...
I've got a whole lot of different "Leatherman tolls". I love'em all!
But My favourit tool, is the "Surge". I've got a Victorinox "Swiss tool" in My belt too, and of course a pair of Swiss Army knives, of the bigger size, in My pockets. Always helpful. And a good flashligt, and a headlight, will help You, even moore!😉
