Worst leatherman ever, beats the OHT by a mile at that. Tools of the wingman/sidekick, with the price of a charge AL, with a 420hc instead of 154cm blade. If you use TUF GLYDE you can make your wave/charge open and close one handed
Tool Crib I have a couple questions for you. Do you know if the wingman package opener will work in the wave. I recently purchased one and am looking to customize it
It doesn’t work very well because the catch mechanisms are different, so it will not lock in place properly.
@@txtoolcrib thank you for the feed back. I did stumble upon you surge videos explaining this
Get yaself a micro Leatherman (i think that's it? ) it has a tweezer tool fold out. For ya keyring...., it's got ya perfect nail cleaner 👌 , best ever!!!
This is hands-down the best review and comparison since the release of the Free Series. Job well done and thank you!
Thank you, I appreciate that very much.
I'll concur. Easy to listen to. Very fair. Put the information out there clear and concise with real world testing. Great video.
where is it free
Really lol he was using the can opener the wrong way on the p4 in the video.😂😂😂
I think when they had the design meetings, Marketing spoke a lot louder than Engineering. The Wave has a much better toolset.
I think you’re right on all points.
There's a video on Blade HQ (cringe HQ) where they interview the product manager Jeremy and watching that he definitely came off more of a salesman to me than anything.
The only thing i could add to the wave its an awl, the rest is just perfect
Spot on!
Surge makes the wave and the free pale in comparison
Finally got to fiddle with a P4 yesterday. The magnetised open /close was cool. If I could get the Wave tools with the P4 gimmick I'd be happy.
This is certainly an in depth review and although I agree that the wave + has advantages over the free p4...I think the free has equal advantages over the wave. I’ve owned a wave plus that unfortunately fell out of my pack on a 3 day hike in the Catskills. Chalked it up as a sad loss. When I got home I figured I’d give the free p4 a shot. I couldn’t be happier with it! The only thing I miss is the etched in ruler on the liners. I don’t miss the bit driver because I always lost the bits anyway and I definitely don’t miss needing to open the handles for the tool access. The free was designed to be and easier more practical multi tool over the wave. I haven’t had and issues regarding the pliers either. The hinge is much looser than the locking tabs that keep the handles from folding over. Mine is comparable to a butterfly knife in function. I have used it just about every day for work for over 6 months and have been happy. I also like the newly designed locking mechanism for the tools over the wave along with the magnetic pull to seat them down. There I days I miss my wave but I certainly don’t regret my purchase of the free. At the end of the day it’s a different tool that suits different needs.
Thanks for illuminating the differences in functionality so well.On the surface the p4 would appear to be the next big thing, but upon further inspection I think I'll stick with my wave and rebar for my purposes. Excellent video!
You’re quite welcome sir.
your a smart fella careful though you pick up a surge and the wave feels like a toy
@@abelcross2445 absolutely
From everything I have seen regarding the Free tools, it seems that they rushed to release them. They focused too much on how nice they look and how fun they are to fidget with, but they forgot to test them as tools, and see how the design translates to function. They would have caught a lot of issues users are coming across.
The Free P4 is nowhere near the Wave. One-handed access to everything is nice, but it means nothing when the vast majority of tools are so inferior to the Wave's. Sure, we fidget with our multi-tools, but that should not be the main selling point.
I agree. I think this new line of tools sacrifices ease and speed of use for performance and functionality. Fundamentally, I believe it is wrong approach.
As a Millwright I would rather use the Wave. Not that a multi tool is going to be used in the type of work that I do, however when I'm not at work, and want something that could potentially get me out of a jam. The Wave is a better bet. In my opinion. The free p4 is a good looking MT, but I think it's more suited to those who dont use hand tools very often in daily life. It would be good to keep in a road side emergency kit, or a household tool set.
Still, we don't have to forget that is a multitool. You have to remove or to insert a screw? you have a Philips drive and a flat one. You want to cut some wood? you have a saw. You want to open a can or a bottle? you have the tools there and so on. Don't know what you expect from a multitool. Of course you can't go to build a house with it but it does the light job for what it's actually meant. So much fuss about the wave's bit driver and comparisons...
I think this might be the best review I've seen on UA-cam. Subject matter aside, the format, clarity, thoroughness, and skill of presentation are top notch. Really made it a pleasure to watch. Well done!
Side note: I agree with your conclusion on the tools and the other guy's analogy. The Free might be a little more style and comfort, but the Wave is WAY more truck.
Thank you very much for that statement. I have had quite a few people that have really liked this format. I believe I will adopt it going forward on future reviews as well. Thank you for watching.
I've been looking for a multitool because its a pain to carry my tools everywhere. This told me everything I needed to know. I figured the saws blades would be a side thought but then I saw how easily you cut through the wood. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
You’re very welcome. I started carrying a multi tool over 20 years ago. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t have one with me.
Hi Ben, I’ve viewed many of your videos but have yet to comment. Just wanted to say that the quality of your content is literally second-to-none for a couple reasons:
1. You’re clearly an expert in your profession. The commentary you provide is not just entertaining and informative, but typically educational. I feel I’ve learned a great deal just from viewing your videos.
2. You disseminate your knowledge and expertise in a coherent manner. As a scientist, I fortunately get to interact with experts daily, however, I wish half of them could be as clear in their explanations as you are.
Just wanted to acknowledge your fantastic work, looking forward to all future videos on various topics.
Matthew, I believe that is the highest compliment I’ve ever received in my entire life. Thank you very much. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos.
@@txtoolcrib Allow me then to give you the highest insult you've ever received in your life, just to balance it out:

just kidding :)
Thank you for taking the time to shoot, record, and edit this content. It saved me time and potential buyer's remorse.
One thing I noticed with my Wave Plus was the cap lifter wasn't good at all. But I realized that I was using the cap lifter with the handles closed (same as you were in the video). If you use the cap lifter with the handles open, then it works great. When you close the handles they get in the way of most bottles... opening the handles just gets them out of the way. :) Great video.
clearly Leatherman needs to have you test all there prototypes in the future :)
Great video, I was thinking about buying my first "Leatherman" ( I own a couple of Gerber multi-tools due to price but I think it's time to upgrade) and the wave + was the one I've been looking at. I completely agree with your comparison between these two. Thanks for posting.
You’re welcome, thanks for watching.
I’ve been trying to out-Wave my Wave+ for years...can’t. I own a Surge, an old Wave, a Skeletool, a cpl Gerber’s, an old Schrade (sp?), and a Vic Swisstool. The Wave+ is not perfect but it’s damned good and still the winner IMO.
Absolutely brilliant break down on both knives features. Just purchased my first Leatherman, it's a WAVE+ and after watching your video, I have learned a lot about it. Will still utilize the Awl on the Victorinox Swiss Tool but cannot wait to get stuck in using the WAVE+
Thanks mate for a top notch video 👍
Glad to help!
Looks like my Wave is good for another generation! Glad to hear that, I thought i was missing out! Now I plan to have them bury me with it strapped to my waist!
It appears to me that it's not that the P4 is a bad tool but that the Wave is a better tool & hard act to follow. Perhaps they decided to cut things down a bit to get a more modular appearance and single handed access for the sub tool set of the P4. I've loved my Wave forever. I bought the first generation that didn't have the locking tool set option. I gave that to my son years ago and he still has it among his stuff. It's in great condition and the tool was bought in 1998!
I think the Wave is still one of the best multi tools made.
I've been watching gear reviews for years and this is, by far, the most comprehensive, thorough and informative review/comparison I've ever seen. I've been painstakingly researching leatherman MTs for the past couple days and I narrowed it down to the Wave+ and P4, which led me to this video. After watching this review, I'm confident in my final decision. Thank you!
Well thank you, I appreciate that very much. Which one did you decide on?
@@txtoolcrib ...The Wave+, of course. And I also ordered the accessory package. This will be my first real multi-tool...and hopefully, my last. Or at least, for a while :-)
An excellent choice!
@..Thomas Smith 10 months later I’m predicting by now you own at least 5 and have kept buying at least a couple of them a secret from your better half. Am I close 😂?
been going through your videos I'm getting a new wave+ this weekend so I'm a very happy guy and your videos are awesome👍
I own both and here's my own breakdown on why the Wave+ is superior:
- The Wave has a slightly longer straight blade, serrated blade and saw, with the option of swapping the better S30V blade on the Charge tti
- It's more compact in length
- Has a functional 8" ruler
- Has replaceable bit
- Serrated blade is placed on a better side than the one on the P4
- Way better file with diamond coat
- Is more moddable
- Pocket clip can be placed on either side (you have to remove the hidden lanyard ring)
- Option for storing the tweezers (from the Style PS)
- Eyeglass screwdriver if you like that feature
The only cons I've found on the Wave so far are not one hand operations and inferior scissors. Other than that I personally like it better than the P4.
Even though this review is 3 years old..it’s extremely helpful..I’ve had a gen 2 wave for over 6 years..I have a couple other leatherman but keep coming back to the wave..thought about trying a p series..but after this review I’m sticking with the wave 👌🏼💯
Well done...this is one of the best side by side comparisons that is on UA-cam. Very honest on straight forward and no BS.
Thank you sir, I appreciate that.
Ben, great review! If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m a leatherman collector I would have returned my new Free P-4. If it sticks like you showed it’s going back to leatherman in a heartbeat! I agree with you 100% on your review. Thanks!
Thank you sir, I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. I am going to be returning my P4 soon, hopefully the plier issue will be corrected quickly by Leatherman.
Great, honest, in-depth comparison. Thanks for posting. For me, im able to deploy most of the tools on my Surge one-handed (including the pliers). So while having all tools deployable and returnable is a great design for the Free, the cost and compromise on other tools just cant sell me. That being said, im hoping to try one soon to judge for myself
I think you said it best, it’s a compromise. It’s too large of a compromise for end users to have to accept though, especially considering the price.
@@txtoolcrib true. I think the biggest compromise was what you had mentioned in the video: the bit exchanger. In an ideal world, it would be great to have a multi-tool that has fully-modular/interchangeable parts. But that's unlikely, and not cost-efficient I would assume from a business-model point of view. But having some modular parts like the bit exchanger really opens up the capability and flexibility of a Leatherman. Hopefully reviews and comments from the community will have some influence on their R&D in future designs.
I have no finger nails so I can't use a regular mutitool. Sooooo! Happy they came out with the free. I use it every day all day at work and minus the finger smashing its awsome!
Sticking with my Wave +. Thank you for the very thorough review!
You’re welcome, thanks for watching.
8:01 Nice excuse to have 2 cold ones. Great vid!
This is awesome and fair comparison, rare to find such no-nonsense and honest videos regarding these things.
Thank you very much, I appreciate it.
Good review! Even the design of the Wave (in my eyes) is more streamline and modern - the Leatherman Free is in my eyes a lil' bit "standard". The price isn't accurate for this one..
Thank you. I think the Wave is far better overall than the new FREE series.
As a serious MT user and after a couple weeks of use I find In fact you do want to play with it, in fact it is a more pleasant experience, the scissors are better, the file is much more capable than I thought. The screw drivers and package opener are great. The wave is slightly more capable but not really a huge difference for me. The P4 is so pleasant to use and carry it's almost fun.
I love my Free P4. For my line of work it's one-,handed easy to access tooling has worked out great for me.
But I don't have Wave+ to compare it too. I own 5 other mult-tools and the Free P4 is my new EDC.
There is no doubt that the one-handed accessibility is a huge selling point for some. I just wished they hadn’t sacrificed the level of tool quality we have come to expect from Leatherman’s higher end models.
I have been using my free P4 as a daily driver for 3 weeks now. I have to say I really like the easy access of the tools on the outside of the device. I think that's truley innovative. I think with a few design tweaks from user feedback the P42 could be a solid device.
They have to figure out how to get that bit exchanger in there on the next version. That opens up space for the rebar package opener a great awl. I don't know how they are going to fix the file issue. They took that slot and added the sissors which are really nice.
Directionally insiring, but they missed the mark just a little bit.
I too hope that user feedback as well as reviews will help point Leatherman in the right direction to fix the issues on the new designs. They have some innovative engineering built in, they just don’t work as a package. The ideas are on the right track I think, but they need to approach it differently. Thanks for watching.
Very very big thanks for your comparison. It is very useful for me. IMHO your view is very serious and practice. You help me in my decision.
Thanks.
Have great time.
You are very welcome sir. I’m glad my video helped you to make your decision.
Totally agree with your assessment. The bit interchangeability is a show stopper for me on giving up my wave. I'd like the better scissors and get rid of the eye glass screw driver and replace with an "awl" and the wave would be the perfect tool.
Couldn't agree more.
Thanks for the video, you just confirmed what I was thinking anyway. Had to return a FREE product because the blade wouldn't stay locked.
Mr Ben, I have been really enjoying your videos on multitools and pocket knives. Thanks for taking the time to make them: you're very knowledgeable regarding tools and their uses, and I can tell you have a fascination for them, which I do too. God bless you sir!
Thank you, glad you’re enjoying the content.
Exceptionally informative video comparing the two Leatherman products. Methodical in looking at each tool and good camera work. Perfect pace. Was able to decide which Leatherman to purchase. Job done. Thanking you sir.
Far and away the best comparison of these two I’ve ever seen. Good work!
Thank you sir, I appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time to watch.
So I've just purchased the Rev last week and I purchased it for all the reasons that you find fault in. I have a few Super Tools that I've owned for decades and the idea of a much smaller tool at a $25 price point was very appealing. I like the clip and find that it works best in my left pocket because the slim side flows with my pocket and doesn't create a bulge. I've never liked the spring loaded pliers and find they are more burdensome than useful especially when I lay them down. I want them to stay there, not to spring open. The last item is the package opener; I just used it all afternoon for cutting weather sealing tape. You hook it on the tape and being as sharp as it is, cuts it clean and smooth. Without closing it I can clip it on my pocket and not have a very sharp, pointed knife out. It also works well with twine and hay bales. I have used it on the pesky plastic container packages and it works well as designed. I do find the clip a touch loose but not a bother and I do have to question the blade hole. All in all I find that it is a fine tool and exactly what I was looking for. I've never found a good reason to have the saw and I don't want scissors on my multi-tool. Nice review, I just find it a bit off the mark.
If you can find them cheap, then they are worth it. Most of the places I have seen the Rev the prices have just been too high to consider it a viable option.
A year later and I'm still super glad I stuck with my Wave. I think the magnet idea is fun, bit not durable. Time will tell, but I know my Wave has years of experience and I've had zero issues.
Heck, my PSTii is just about 25 years old and has had zero issues! (It rides in my tacklebox now since I got my Wage years ago.)
It's a few ounces heavier than my Skeletool (5 oz. compared to 8.5 oz) in my pocket....so the Wave is in a belt sheath with a bit kit and extender. I tend to throw the Wave/Sheath combo in my bag, briefcase, or glovebox or saddlebag.
Not a wave +, just a plain old Wave...skill going strong. I think the Free series will fade.
Totally agree, I have a Charge TTi with a custom titanium awl, I will wait for the next evolution of the Free series
And see if there are any improvements - OUTSTANDING review 👍👍👍
Thank you sir, and thank you very much for taking the time to watch my video. I hope you’ll find some of my other videos as informative.
Love your videos, subscribed a few days ago. Had a question about the ruler/depth gauge thing on the P4: Are the markings only printed/laser engraved on or they also physically stamped into the metal like on the Wave?
Thank you very much sir. If memory serves, they are laser etched. I will have to verify that though and try to get back with you.
The Free can opener is like a modern Vx version and it is designed to operate in a forward (counter clockwise) direction. You were trying to use in the clockwise direction like the old Leatherman/Wenger style is used. The Vx style opener works well once you get the hang of it and get a rhythm going.
Right handed winz again! Lol
I know this review was done a couple years ago but I thought I'd put my 2 cents in. I have both the Free P4 and the Wave (albeit not the Plus). I do agree with you that the Free P4 does have an issue with the handles popping loose when opening after applying load on the pliers. However I've had mine for a couple years now and that issue does go away when the pliers get used and worn in, but I definitely agree that it is annoying for the first few months of use. Although I do like the Free P4 I always find myself gravitating to the Charge TTi I purchased back in high school. Whether its from sentimental value or because I just prefer it more I can't tell hahaha. I do really wish it had an Awl though, I've been thinking of swapping the flat head driver on my charge to the awl from my rebar but I don't want to start Frankensteining tools together. Anyhow, great video as always, hope you are doing well.
the best honest fully thought-out hands-on review by a true tool user i have seen period ...no fluff, simply real-world based usable information. frankly Leatherman (and other companies) should hire you to truly test their tools. i will hold off on the P-series until Leatherman resolves those issues, for now will be happily keeping my Wave +, Rebar, Super 300 and Skeletool, and trusty Juice KF4 . A+++ Review Ben, Bravo.
Thank you very much, I appreciate you watching.
Tnx for this review! I have a ‘98 PST and Micra. Was floating between Wave+, FREE P4, or a MUT as my EDC. Your reviews/channel has helped me decide on a Wave+.
Subbed as well 🤙🏽
*any thoughts on the bit drivers/extender? Unsure how often I’d use? But I could pass entire set to one of my boys down the road.
The diamond file alone has me firmly in the Wave camp.
I'm a bid diamond file fan as well.
Yeah diamond file are soo good.
@@hellsing56666 Yep, I've used them on hardened steel a regular file won't touch.
Bought my hubby the wave + he loves it for fishing
A great tool and a great gift. I bet he is really enjoying it.
I'd love to see who signed off on the ruler and file on the P4 and said "yeah this is better than what we have already". 2 very useful tools that are basically unusable for so many people! Was looking at the P4 purely for design but I'm going to go update my Rebar with the Wave. Cheers buddy
I feel ya!
One thing you didn’t touch on is the pocket clips. The wave is the clear winner in my book as it offers deep ride and a black coated option. I much prefer a low profile, less noticeable carry for office and formal occasions, and the P4 doesn’t offer that. Granted you could paint the P4 clip but the top of the tool would still stick out, plus paint doesn’t hold up long.
Excellent, detailed review. Well done. If I remember correctly the fault that you described with the Free P4 pliers was a fault in the original Leatherman PST.
Thank you sir.
Wave was a revolution when it first arrived on the market , and still is best all round choice imo . I just gave one to an old mate for a gift , he seemed pretty happy with it .
I have had my wave for years and it has never let me down, I am not retiring it and letting it down.
Great review. My p4 pliers don't open like your's when opening the pliers up. It looks like your catch is weak. I would send it back for sure. Something is off there.
Ben I'd just like to thank you for the time and effort you put into these reviews. Great work keep it up.
Same here
Great video, I enjoyed and learned something new. I have carried a version of the Leatherman since 1990 and the wave is by far my favorite. Too bad Leatherman doesn't sell a wave/surge/rebar frame and one can add tools as they want them. If the can opener on the rebar is better than the wave just add it, if the serrated blade on the Free is great just add it. A fully customizable Leatherman and the user just chooses the options. Just my two cents.
Thank you. I too have been a long time Leatherman user. The Wave was on my hip for over seven years. It has a special place in my heart, got me out of countless jambs. Hopefully one day we will get the ability to customize our own tools, that would be awesome. I want to thank you for watching and for commenting.
Considering both are 140, I would take my Charge+ over the P4 any day of the week. Form over function in some cases. For me the major selling points are the bit driver, and that sweet 154CM blade steel. I have a habit of flipping it out balisong style lately glad to see that at the end of the video lmao
I love the Charge +, I’m hopeful for the day that Leatherman makes an upgraded Surge to match. Bit driver is a big advantage for me as well. Blade steel also. I also like the overall feel of the Charge +. I thought it would be fun to throw that in at the end.
At $140... why not just get the Surge and be done with it?
I agree! I think I’ll stick with my old charge tti and victorinox swisstool. Glad I found this video
Function over Flash! ...completely agree.
Keep these awesome vids coming.
Just calling them like I see them. Thanks for watching.
Good job- thanks for posting your review!
Interesting enough I had to send in my wave plus twice because the pliers had the same problem you mentioned. They put on some good ones the 3rd time. I don’t know what causes it?
It does happen. I had a brand new Signal that came that way out of the box. I will be sending it back soon to be replaced as well. I have seen about two dozen FREE models with this problem since their release. I’m confident the problem will be resolved quickly though.
The problem with the plier head becoming stiff after hard squeezes seems to apply to ALL leatherman models. For example the same thing happens with my Wave+ and it takes a few minutes of intentional working to get it loose again.
I like the bit exchange and extender but is that something else you need to carry with the tool?
I work as a set dresser/props in a movie industry. I've been using Leatherman and Victorinox for more than 15 years and I always prefer Leatherman. I had and use mostly Wave and Surge. You will appreciate Free P4 only when you hanging up on a step letter and losing your drive bit or need some tool but you have only one hand available. Free series came right on time for me. Surge was perfect for me but too heavy and bulky, wave was in the sweet spot with all the compromises, P4 is exactly what I need. One last thing, if you want to get the job done in a proper way- get the dedicated tool. Leatherman and all the rest of the multitools are made for emergencies and light work which doesn't require special skills or tools.
Extremely detailed and functional review of the tools. I have been researching this exact topic as I plan to buy a leatherman and this review was an eye opener. "Function over Flash" is the statement really resonated with me.
Thank you sir, I hope this leads you a little closer to helping you find what works for you.
awesome review.. definitely helped me to choose the wave. thank you
I had the same falfunction of the closing handle on my Surge. Instead of sending it to Leatherman to fix it, i searched it on the internet and its fixable just by hitting the outter side of the tool with a little hammer. Its very common problem and very very easy to solve
Thanks for sharing that tip. I actually wasn’t aware of that.
Nice one, I love it and I almost helped you with the one hand opening of the wave 😀 but luckily you did it on the end😉
Great review by the way, I guess I could've mentioned that in my other post!
Thank you, and thank you for watching.
I have a similar tightening plier issue with my surge and rebar. As I squeeze hard on the pliers they become sticky. But since their handle tension is good they won’t bent upon reopening. I can loosen the plier again by twisting the handles. I guess there’s a design problem or QC problem with plier heads. My wave doesn’t have the same problem.
Great videos and info
What would be your go multi tool you would recommend for a building and maintenance trade thanks
That’s an interesting question. My three top choices would be the Surge, SwissTool, and SuperTool 300. I also think the Crunch could be very valuable in certain situations as well. I think for maintenance, you’ll want to lean towards the more robust models. If you haven’t used a multi tool on the job before now, they will save you multiple trips back to the toolbox for those small jobs.
Mod the free series with after market bit driver, changes the Philips and pry bar out for it. I have the free p2 so I'm changing scissors for a full serrated too.
Also, I can't recreate that plier problem on my free p2. My initial thought is it may be your wire cutters catching each other. When the needlepoint flexes
So I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Free P4. After using the T4 for years, I got its big brother and looking at the tools you can notice a slight difference between what was on the T4 when it was released and the P4 now. The awl tip became finer and the scissors river tighter, but the can opener is dull, which likely was the case in this video. Overall I don’t know why Leatherman compared the Free P4 to the Wave + when I think the wave, charge, and surge fit more of a tradesman purposes whereas the Free series fits the casual user.
Pretty cool video, thanks for sharing, planning to get one for December this help a lot thank you
You’re welcome. Thank you for watching.
Are the blades interchangeable? If I was willing to swap my Wave tools into a P4 will they fit and work?
Thanks for a great review. I was ready to sell my Wave and get a P4 because my old man’s nails can’t pull all the Wave tools out anymore…. : (
Marketing will tell me what is great about any given product, what I want to know is what is wrong with it and how much it matters. For that emphasis in your review sir, I salute you.
Thank you for that. I try to look at everything as objectively as I can. I am like you, I want to know where the faults lie or the areas of concern before I make a purchase.
Hahaha. Love the way you’re pointing out leatherman features with a Swiss army tool.
Two of my favorite manufacturers.
I bought the Wave in 2020. Since then, I have beat the living daylights out of it. Still works like a charm. I never go anywhere without it and don't feel complete apart from it. Save the holster or sheath or whatever it's called, the pocket clip works fine for me and keeps my money clip in my pocket from shifting around. Leatherman makes quality products that pretty much last a lifetime. The Waves hidden feature in the form of a lanyard keeps my spare keys out of my pocket thus freeing up space and giving me piece of mind.
I work in dirt doing gas main. I use my charge Tti a lot more than most and it’s abused. There is a lot of modified around me I can tell you the magnets in the free series pick up every single piece of small metal dust which sucks. It’s hard enough cleaning the tool up without the magnets holding metal dust. My charge stays on my belt and has rust spots from working in the rain. My p4 rusted faster and more working in the rain. Most users would cry if they saw how dirty and abused my tool is....
I anticipated that the P series was not going to work at all for us blue collar guys. I don’t think people have a real understanding of just how much ferrous dust we will encounter on a daily basis. It was a bad idea from the start.
fantastic review and comparison of these two...well done.
VERY comprehensive measurements, Thanks
You’re welcome, and thanks for watching.
Hello there TX Tool Crib.
I think you did a very good review on the two tools. I will say that new one P4, probably was up talked lol. (Marketing
And all that)
I’m a Generation 2 wave carrier (since 2003 or in the first or second year it came out. I have the locking backs), and I have to agree with you in the sense of practicality. The multi Head replacement with the bit extender I have will beat that “up class Multi tool” for 90% of the jobs I do. And if I don’t have my bit extender Plus extra bits, maybe 75% of the time my Wave will get it done.
I do think all the hype was about the fact that out of the box it can do an one hand open. Which isn’t really Noteworthy. Unless you’re one of those New kids on the block.
Meanwhile anybody with the wave who has broken it in could One hand open it as well. I don’t see myself “upgrading” to this any time soon. Even after breaking generation 1 and 2 once each. (I broke my generation one prying something open and I accidentally welded my generation two pliers together working on a car.)
Just in case anybody is interested in what I do, I do landscaping (trees, dirt, concrete, Grass, stonework, Stones, maintenance on the machines and more. Along with working a part-time job at the Home Depot.)
The Leatherman wave (generation two) Will stay by my side for years to come.
Thank you for your honest review!
You're welcome. I actually think the Gen 2 Wave is the best of the group myself. I don't see the need for replaceable cutters on that small of pliers.
Honestly an amazing review - thank you so much for the time and effort.
(Constantly hearing) And this one goes to the Wave +, really shows - thanks again!
thanks for this video, very professional very nice! I am about to buy P4 until I saw this, now I will go for wave
I love this channel I was in Cabela’s today playing with a P2 and the problem with the players not coming apart and the handle breaking free I think is because typically all leathermen’s players are pretty stiff for a while until they’re well broken in which is not a bad thing but I think it’s differ in the players than they are in those handles with the crappy magnets so I think that problem is going to exist in anyone’s daily use if they put any type of pressure on the handles that being said maybe after they get really broken in over a significant amount of time maybe that will get better but I am with you I cannot bring myself to purchase it I think they need a lot of work it’s almost like Leatherman went back to the beginning and maybe over the years they will perfect it as they did with the wave just kind of sucks that they put that out there and it was almost like a few steps back
You may be right, the pliers may break in just fine.
I do a lot of things one handed, or holding something while digging for a tool. The pocket clip and ease of use were key in my decision to get the p4. Coming from the sidekick and wingman; I’m happy with the overall functionality of the p4.
It's a fit for some, but i think you're in the minority. The real NEED for a 1 handed opening multi tool is not prevalent
@@benningsniper9516 I disagree with you there. I’m a tradesman so 99% of the time I’m using my real tools and the only real time I use my leather man is when I’m in the middle of something and don’t have a specific tool on me, so the one handed accessibility is exactly what made me choose the p4.
the malfuunction at 20:12 is the biggest deal breaker. Give that thing more time and use and it will get worse.
very nice review..made me stick my wave even more.
I think that is a good choice. I know that not everyone agrees with me on this. I feel that, until we see some refinement on the FREE series, the Wave will remain the better of the two. There are some things about the FREE series that I do like, they are just not there yet. The tool set will certainly have to be improved for starters.
Awesome Review! I don't have a Wave Plus But I am on my 3rd Wave, it is by far my favorite Leatherman. I have quite a few other Leatherman tools. I also occationally use a Skeletool, Charge TTi, Surge I also have a Mutt on my Backpack. I will keep an eye on the new tools I might get one for light duty work but my Wave is used Everyday. About the only thing that bothers me with the Wave is getting pinched when using the pliers. Holy Crud that hurts! I am tempted to Grind down the blades to try to avoid that.
Thank you. I like the Wave a lot. It was my EDC for many years. I do know what you mean about getting pinched. I had to train myself, when using to the Wave, to make a conscience effort to grip the pliers lower on the handles when gripping something hard with the pliers. It is one of the only downsides to the Wave.
I lost my CS4 and for replacement/upgrade i choosed a wave+ before the free p4 i am afraid my environment with welding and grinding iron will cause problems whit the magnets attract iron particles!? what do you think?
Pär Ericsson I agree. I don’t think these multi tools would be very conducive to an environment that is filled with ferrous materials. You could clean it out, but I think it would be a constant thorn in your side.
Best review/comparison of these two tools!
Great review. I wish I had seen this before I bought the Free P4.
Excellent analysis. Really helped me decide!
Agree 100% with this video. Thanks for your comparison!.. At a $140 price tag, I rather purchase the Charge+ but in the mean time, I will definitely stick with my Wave+ which, by the way, it does exactly the same after using it everyday at work 25:25 👍🙂
You're welcome. I think the Wave+ is definitely the more capable of the two from a purely functionality standpoint. I do see the appeal of the FREE P4 as well though, it's just not for me.
Recently purchased a Free P4, no issues with the pliers and handle that you pointed out. Maybe Leatherman sorted it out and did a running change? Otherwise, good review.
Thank you!
I like some of leatherman’s products but I’ll stick my Gerber for multi tools. Good review
Great review of both...thanks!
Thank you.
Have my P4 in my hands watching this. Mine does not have that problem with the pliers. That said I agree with most of your points. My wire cutters on my P4 are way better than my charge, but I think they redesigned the cutting blades
It could have been a problem with the first batch that went out, however, I have seen many people with the same problem concerning the pliers. The cutters are definitely sharper than other Leatherman models. They also have a bit more relief behind the cutters than other models, which allows them to cut cleaner. It will be interesting to see if replacement cutters will have the same profile moving forward.
The plier handle break over issue can be solved "temporarily". Just fold P4 then you can see Two of "T" shaped Long nose plier ankle area. Grab P4 and hit the T shaped area hard on the wood or something. Then it can help releasing stuck plier to original position. But if you use it again, it will stuck again. So this is big issue for sure.
I wonder if they have been able to correct this issue. Mine is one of the early models.
Great review. Very professional and extremely helpful in making my decision on which one to purchase. Thank you!
Thank you very much.
