I sacrifice a goat twice a week to see secret anatomy tutorials and color theory lessons from the void
But I also keep a playlist of videos that people without that kinda access to goats can watch too ua-cam.com/play/PLEFKK1ywgVCDPDR9RhgxU0SojdWpUZAiD.html art advice, how to improve, specific lesson-types, and some videos on the art industry as well are in there :0 I recommend not skipping too quickly over the 2 hour-type ones, it's often those that can be the most impactful in how you approach your learning methods

I feel like I am learning whenever I watch one of your videos. I don't have a lot of time for art, but do as much as I can. When I can't draw art videos are the first thing I come to! (especially yours

Over the past few years I watch your videos to understand shading and anatomy and I’m glad to have your vids as a teacher. Since about last year I can finally do any pose with animals and I just now starting to be able to different gestures with hands. I still come back to watch to see how you shade or draw because I don’t use lines like you did hear I kinda just wing it then fix a long the way. Your art helped me progress in mine and now I’m going to college for a computer science major to create video games with my art. But to you will always be a teacher with your amazing art work and videos

Youre honestly such an inspiration to me, and your anatomy, colours, and composition always leave me speechless.
I do have a question though,
I know you use references, but even with them how do you know what colours to pick?
I always struggle finding the right colours, and most choices people make I just cant comprehend and put to practice.
    How do you do it?
(sorry this is a trainwreck of a comment)

Thanks! And no worries, it's a messy mix of plenty of things and I'm still learning myself as well. In parts, it comes from music and the "idea" for the image,, as in "what feeling and mood do I want this image to have?". If the idea was inspired by music in the first place, I'll be leaning towards colors that could fit that music for example. If I know the image should come across with a certain feeling (like when I get commissioned for something specific) I'll already in my head connect some colors to the requested image. Dark foresty foreboding? Maybe some classic deep mossy green and red complementary contrast would work. Or in this case, uplifting freeing and hopeful? Well bright blue skies are maybe a bit cliché by now (not necessarily a bad thing) And it might be more interesting to contrast the main characters rusty-red with teal-green instead of the backgrounds sandy yellows with blue.
And hey look at that, there are some reference images with a teal sky and golden clouds that look neat- so that solidifies that mental idea.
That leads to the next thing, yeah references are important, especially if I want to achieve a realistic light-setting. I'm not yet skilled enough to be able to pick the right colors at the right shades to mimic specific light-situations. So that means photo references, and lots and lots of color adjustment sliders. Photoshop has a bunch, and I sometimes spend an hour just trying to get basic blobs of colors to look as "right" as possible. I'll recheck the sliders during other stages as well, and maybe add gradients and etc to harmonize anything that might clash a bit too much still.
In the end the decisions you make should usually work towards a common goal,, that is, if you want to lead the viewer's eye to the important points. And how do you lead the eye? Partly by controlling the areas of contrast. Light dark, warm cold, complementary, blurry focused etc.
So ask yourself a barrage of questions, what is the light source/s, and what is the environment like? A sunny
day in a humid jungle will feel differently than a sunny day in a frosty tundra - what colors do you avoid or focus on for each?. What is the character's color scheme, would it work to just have one or two main contrasting colors in the surroundings? Or do we need to make it more monochrome to avoid it being confusing? (like imagine if this character design already had hints of purple and yellow too - I might have gone with a bright blue sky, just so the character has more room to breathe in the frame)
Oof not sure if any of this is helpful :'I As with many things I rely a lot on intuition, especially when handling the mentioned color adjustment sliders. You only have intuition to trust when figuring out whether the levels of blue should be at +10% or +11% (and boy can it be a struggle) Other than that, I've also watched my fair share of color theory videos (most of which can be found in this playlist of mine ua-cam.com/play/PLEFKK1ywgVCDPDR9RhgxU0SojdWpUZAiD.html

I love watching your painting process, it's so smooth and gorgeous!
But if I'm honest, I think my favorite thing to watch is your thumbnail sketches. It's so so so fun to see your ideas and through process going into a piece, and it's super inspiring to see it go from several messy thumbnails to a final piece

I wanted to say that you have great feeling of composition and especially with perspective!;w; Would you give some tips on how to work with grids? They confused me always>< Keep awesome work!

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  5 років тому +1

Thanks! And hmm, I think it's all about first getting a solid mental image of what you want your drawing to possibly look like. That mental image doesn't have to be drawn out, but usually makes things easier - even if really rough. I still remember a couple years ago, it was very common for me to redraw one single pose like 10 times before it felt right, and it was usually the perspectives and proportions that often felt off. At some point after I've been going through that process again and again, trying to also shy away from "easy poses" (flat profile views, just sitting or standing - I made a habit of going for "floaty poses") - after all that, I gradually got better at feeling things out, perspective, shapes, volumes.
It's something you gotta be patient with, I sadly don't really know what kind of exercise would be most effective to train your brain to be able to envision 3D space while just putting lines on a flat screen :'I it's different for every person. But I guess concerning grids - trust your gut? If something "looks off" then there will be a reason for it. It's up to you what to do with that feeling,, if you at that moment have the energy to struggle through experimenting - shifting placement and angles until it maybe looks better or not,, or if you move on to see if maybe drawing it all out lets you see the issues when its all done - to do better next time.
Be self-critical, but also patient with yourself :> I hope that helps????? I depend largely on intuition and feel when it comes to perspective, so I don't have any actual technical advice.
Though I just remembered, there is this video series "becoming a Gi" that is very perspective focused ("Gi" refers to the Artist God™ Kim Jung Gi) so if you need some more legit drawing techniques and info then definitely check them out! ua-cam.com/video/h8x_TClXuxM/v-deo.html

yepp I get messages about this individual like twice a week by now :'I they make new accounts whenever their old ones get taken down, and there isn't much more one can do other than reporting them. But you'll always be able to recognize them by their focus on HTTYD stuff? From how I see it they in general seem to just use their account as some sort of archive, and I'm not very bothered by reposters that dont actively seek to gain personal profit from their reposting. Though I've had 3 commenters on this video alone include a link to the reposted video, and thus had to hide them, since that's basically the only source of views for a channel like that.
