    Alternatively known as: blue big boi
    And this time it's a bit of a longer video! The other option was to make it into 2 parts, which theoretically would be fine too,, but there's just something so satisfying about seeing an image go from sketch to finishing touches all in one video.
    I could of course speed it up even further to shorten the runtime, but it's already a tad faster than the usual and I wouldn't want the footage looking janky/flashy
    And the music is a bit more upbeat this time!

    Could you please do a tutorial on how to draw scales in traditional art? I’ve never been quite able to get the hang of drawing them.

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  6 років тому +41

      The best I can advise is to look at photo reference to get ideas,, there are a bunch of different scale types. How I used to do it traditonally was like: i2.wp.com/www.johnmuirlaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Scales-1b.jpg
      But you can also do it more messily like remarin.deviantart.com/art/Dragon-in-black-525179697 note how it's not even filled in all the way around, you can just sprinkle some scale-details here and there, and the viewer's brain will automatically know that the texture is scaley,, generally you can have more denser areas where there would be shadows.
      But nowadays, there isn't much planning being done when I do scales, I just do whatever feels right.
      I'm writing this out, because I have no idea when I'll be more used to doing tutorials :'> so have this in the mean time.

    I did not copy everything but I wanted to get a bit more skilled in my drawings and not have them look so basic. I used the pose, body shape(sort of), and the mouth but almost everything else is different. The hair is now spikes, I gave it 4 ears and chin spikes, a cat like nose, paws instead of dragon hands, and the tail is covered in spikes instead of hair. I didnt give it as much skin detail, the chest scales are not the same and neither is the muscle structure. I also do not have the background or the mage/sorcerer?? Whatever the cloaky boi is
    I really hope u don't take any offense to this as I found your drawings very anatomically educational. I have learned quite a bit from "mimicking" this video alone, I always draw the same mouth but with this I've learned to draw the lips and teeth more correctly.
    I drew this more as education for myself so I hope you don't mind! I love ur drawings and always have.

    I want to improve in art but i feel like im limited because of the program i use. I use paint tool sai and want photoshop (i can afford it) would you recomend getting photoshop ? Im just scared that if i do get it i wont know how to use it and end up waisting money. How lobg did it take for you to be able to easily use photoshop?

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  6 років тому +1

      I've seen many artists use both SAI and photoshop, but a large majority seem to do all the main work on SAI and then just do some editing/adjustments on PS,, so I can't really say how different the drawing will feel like.
      You can buy Photoshop elements for a 1-time buy (last time I checked it was ~90€ for the newest update)
      I've been using that photoshop for like 5 years, and there even were new things I discovered only a year ago or so. Truly learning the ins and outs of a program can take time, but to use photoshop I'd say the main things you need to know is: how to use the layer system/layer settings, brushes being downloadable and there being a ton of packs online (I mostly looked for them on deviantart) and you can adjust colors / light-dark / contrast in many various ways, and on various levels.
      The brush system is more advanced in SAI from what I can tell, so switching over to PS, which compensates with the mentioned brush packs, might possibly feel like a step backward.
      Learning a new program will take time either way, and it will need exploring and playing around.
      But alas, my main thought is: in what way do you feel limited by SAI?
      To "improve in art" can be done in so many various ways. Talking from personal experience, you can improve your technical skill by playing around with cheap pens on paper. Being comfortable with your medium is of course important as well, but your art might simply just *look* at tad better than before, while your improvement in art stays unaffected by it.
      Feeling like you're not improving is a very common thing to feel, the solution there is either: to wait things out, try drawing something completely different, or try figure out what *exactly* you want to see improve (anatomy? art style? color-usage? shading? backgrounds?etc)

    How long do the sketches take?

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  6 років тому +1

      For this piece, from white canvas until the moment color is put in, it's 47 minutes. Sometimes I struggle with a certain figure and it can take a whole hour alone for me to figure out what the general pose should look like.
      I can punch out sketches quite quickly, but when doing a larger-scale painting or something I simply want to invest lots of work in - getting the sketch right is for me the most important part. If something looks off-proportion or doesn't fit right,, not fixing that right away means more work later on when I try to fix it after having drawn tons of details.
      So I usually don't mind when sketching takes up half of the time of what I invest into a piece :0

      Close but no ;> I was born and raised in a lil' country called Luxembourg! German (and French) are taught at primary school level,, but we also speak Luxembourgish. (it has really wack grammatic rules, so it's very inconvenient to use it anywhere outside of spoken conversation and online chatting - it has like 5 different ways to write out "e" sounds)
      Right now I'm probably most comfortable with English, but at the time when I got this program it was German

    Critique: The dragon is incredibly detailed and stunningly made, however since the background is much simpler compared to it, the viewer could be drawn out of the piece.

      I'm not surprised, since comparatively I've got way more experience in drawing gnarly dragons than drawing rolling fields with forests and rivers,, the a gap in quality between creature and background is something I've been struggling to close for a long time :'> Keep in mind, this is still only the second piece that I've ever done trying to get that feel of giant size, with an open landscape like this all while drawing in the style of digitally painting.
      The first piece being this: ua-cam.com/video/Ta9wQVkisSk/v-deo.html with a creature that had an easier design/ less work so that I could invest more energy in the surroundings.
      But you can bet, I'll be the first to celebrate when detailing landscapes and backgrounds comes as easily and naturally to me as detailing a dragon.

      Remarin I know how you feel, I'm not too good with large scale landscapes either. There's always something to work on right? Lol

      Remarin don't stress it. I think the simplicity of the background ADDS to the composition. If the background was as detailed as the dragon, it'd detract from the piece and leave the viewer confused as to what to look at.
