KTM 990 Adventure ride Part 2 | Riding the Whipsaw Trail BC
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- Last August we planned a motorcycle camping trip to Princeton British Columbia to go and ride the Whipsaw Trail.
The trail is an iconic 4x4 trail but it's also a lot of fun on most ADV | Dual Sport-bikes. My friend Chris is on his KTM 690 and I am on my KTM 990 Adventure R both loaded with camping gear.
The traill was great, not too hard overall but had a few sections that challenged you. One being Falcon Hill, we rode the trail counter-clockwise so we could descend it rather than climb it. Next time we will try it the other way.
Follow along to see how the ride went.

Great video. You probably already know this, but I'll just mention it. If you get to a section like the one at 05:39, where you said you are basically unable to use your back brake, you can switch your bike off, put it in gear, and then use the clutch as a back brake for when you can't use your real back brake. I use this all the time.
Thanks for that. I’ll try that next time, was a bit overwhelmed at that point.
@@j-moto1215 Yes yes. Obviously many adventure bike riders never do THAT technical stuff. But me as an enduro rider utilize that a lot when I need both of my feet...
@@johansmitphotography yes, good tip (I ride enduro as well) but the heavy bikes picking up momentum will easily restart the engine in gear. Even my 500EXC does it.
This is normally what I do but minus turning off the bike?
OMG men, crazy ride... Was really amazing see you guys...
Looks like a battle! My t7 wouldn't be an "enjoyable" bike for that. I'd want a dirtbike style ripper i'd feel more in control with. I don't like to fight the entire trail. I appreciate the video to check out thistrail.
A friend of mine just did it on his T7 and he was solo. If you go counter clockwise it’s pretty manageable if you ride dirt bikes. Hope you enjoy the ride however you ride it 🤘
@@j-moto1215 that's great input, thnx bud.
The various Clake hydraulic left hand rear brakes make these descents so much easier on big Adv bikes precisely because you can easily put both feet down. They’re not cheap, but they transform the bike
Good tips, I’ve seen them before and they look slick. Might have to try that. Cheers
looks like a great place to ride!! Thanks for sharing!!
Nice vid again Jody. Ton of fun on this trail and yeah take your time and enjoy it
Thanks, Russ you riding much?
@@j-moto1215 OH yeah, Riding harder now that the summer camp season is done and I have had a few extra months of healing but rode all season, a fair amount.
Thats some great riding. The train track looking bridge was impressive.
Thanks it’s was a great ride. It’s always nice to take the big bike out for a rip once and awhile.
Epic ride! Some proper riding that. Well done guys!
Thank you sir, love taking the big bikes into their element
A lower 1st gear could be beneficial in the rougher spots. Less chance of stalling the engine. ?? Like the Honda CT 90,s they had the lower range gear box.
Good call. The bike has 1 tooth smaller on the front and it makes a big difference in the tech stuff.
Sick video!!! So rad, would love to do this one. Man that bike is a beast!
Yeah shes a bit of an animal haha
That was awesome guys, always wanted to do that loop
Its a good day out forsure
BRAVO , very hard off road
Thanks, always fun on the big bikes
Just rode whipsaw a week ago . The 4x4 traffic has gotten very busy. It’s taken on a lot of damage
Great video, thanks for sharing
Thanks Steve glad you enjoyed it
Awesome ride!
Thanks !! Are you in Canada?
@@j-moto1215 no I'm from South Africa
Right foot on the ground downhill: turn off the Bike with 1st gear in and use the clutch as rear break
I’m guessing you are talking about that one descent section? Good tip I’ll try that next time cheers
@@j-moto1215 yes, the sketchy downhill you mentioned you had to dab with your right foot.
Check some Enduro tutorials on steep downhills, some techniques can be applied for big bikes too. Nice riding area you have there!!
@@thomasrosenwirth7035 thanks yeah it makes perfect sense. That’s a smart way to get down something in that very situation. Are you in Canada?
No, I live in Mexico. Also nice areas here to ride and way less (almost no) restrictions :-)
Wow. That’s a great tip. Hope I remember it when needed.
Great content. Makes me realize I need way more miles under my belt before I attempt the whipsaw. Subbed 👍
Nice !! Smaller bike would have been easier but yeah there are a few tough sections
I'm close to purchasing a 990, probably not the R version I'm 5'8 and ride solo that steep hill you did gave me the hibbyjibby's haha. Do you think the standard(not S spec) 990 would be capable with what you did in this vid? cheers if you reply, know the vid is fairly old now, cheers.
I’m pretty sure the S model would be fine. The R has a bit more travel but both are very capable. It’s actually insane what they can tackle. You won’t be disappointed with the S
Oh god that low idle stall has almost had me fall too! What are your camera settings at ? Thx for a great video
Yeah it’s deceiving isn’t it. You think you have it…. But sadly you don’t
Did you our bike overheat? Mine kinda hates going really slow.
No I was thinking about it the entire ride but for whatever reason it didn’t. It’s got the engine ice coolant in the RAD maybe that makes a difference
Nice ride, how many hours did it take? Cheers
We started around 10am and finished the trail around 4pm I think. Could have done it a lot faster but we took breaks and enjoyed ourselves. The trail itself is about 90kms in length
@@j-moto1215 nice 👍 Thinking of exploring this on my FX 350 for giggles
@@WADZUP it’s a good time, lots of side stuff to keep you entertained man. Your FX will crush it
@@j-moto1215 cheers and fun video and great trip
How tall are you. Does the KTM feel too tall.
I’m 6’2” so it fits me pretty well. It’s definitely a tall ride
sub 150!
Thank you sir!!
