The bad guys employed the classic "attack one at a time" method used in many great martial arts films. Its more cinematic than the "all five of us kill this guy at the same time" fighting style.
And that's why I never ever concider fight as a viable option. It's very simple way to lose your teeth, crack your bones, lose your health or even a way to end your life. Only idiots see that in a different way.
The amount of training and commitment Tom puts himself through has got to be unreal. Acting or not he does a lot of energetic scenes that takes real know how. I boxed for quite a few years and can absolutely give respect where respect is due!!!
Reminds me of two guys thay bullied me in junior high. They found me in a local park. At that point i had enough. One of them limped away with a busted lip. The other needed an ambulance. No charges were filed against me. Oddly enough those two always avoided me ever since.
A guy I grew up with was a National Judo silver medallist in the 90s. About 5 foot 8, 190pds and built like a fire hydrant. He bounced at a bar and was the calmest guy when working but when someone refused to leave or attacked him it never ended well. I was sitting eating with a group and at the table next to us this big guy (at least 6 foot 5 and 280pds) was being drunk and obnoxious. The bouncer went up to him and asked him politely to leave, the guy stood up, told him to F off and made a lunge towards him and within a blink of an eye the guys legs were straight up in the air and he came crashing down on the table and chairs. It was insane how quickly he threw him. Another time I saw him destroy three guys outside the bar that were trying to kick the door in to get back inside after being kicked out. These highly trained fighters are no joke and drunk idiots stand zero chance even in groups of 3 or more. People have no idea…
As an old guy, it's always interesting to see modern fight scenes compared to scenes from the 50's and 60's. I think Bruce Lee had a lot to do with it.
Bruce developed his art Jeet Kune Do and focused on practical street fighting. "Anything goes" mentality. This eventually sparked mixed martial arts and yes, is used in many modern fight scenes.
Tom tells the guy "You're OK" after the elbow to the head. I don't think so. Watched this scene hundreds of times and will probably watch it again and again. Never get tired of it.
Absolute worst choice in Hollywood for Reacher role. Reacher was 6'6" 270lbs. His size was a main element of his intimidation. 5'7" Cruise couldn't intimidate a preschooler.
Bruce Lee was 5' 7" - taller guys may be stronger (but not always), but shorter guys are faster and have better balance, and both of those qualities are integral to being a good fighter. I'm 5' 5" and I dropped a burly 6' 3" dude one time with a single spinning kick to his midsection after he had shoved me in a mosh pit and I ran into a big support beam near the side of the stage. I got really pissed and turned around and threw that kick. Another time a big dude who probably was as least 6' 2" and 250 kept jumping on my back up front at a metal show, so finally I threw a hard elbow back and hit him good. I turned around expecting a fight, but he was gone and people had cleared out the area in a 10 foot radius. Never underestimate short dudes.
@@trog777 I've never read any of those books or even watched the movies - I just don't appreciate shorter men being spoken of in a condescending belittling derogatory manner. And speaking of a male actor's size not being appropriate for a role, how about 6' 3" Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine, who's depicted as being 5' 3" in the comic books? But that's probably fine with you since that portrayal of a famous fictional character was taller than the original rather than shorter. Furthermore, Wolverine is a much more legendary and iconic character than Jack Reacher, who I'd never even heard of until these movies. What a bunch of biased heightist b.s.

Arrogance-Offensive display of superiority or self importance. Overbearing. Pride Tv Reacher didn't care about the murders until he found out it was his brother. Then he just flat out disrespected the police chief and did whatever he felt like. He was like a toned down version of his Hawk character from Teen Titans. Confidence: A consciousness of one's own power. The quality of being certain. Cruises Reacher did everything he could to try to talk the guys out of a fight because he knew they did not stand a chance. He stayed cool headed and calm the whole time. I'm not a Tom Cruise fan but his Reacher simply had a cooler temperament. The other guy was a hot head.
I know him as an actor not as a person. As an actor he’s one of my favorites. The media says all kinds of horrible things about people, most of the time it’s b.s. So I can’t judge him as a person based on the media.
He isn't a junky driving his car in to restaurants, he doesn't beat women, he's a genuinely nice person to fans who meet him in public. Other actors say he's great to work with. Is it really him you find weird? Or is it the scientology?
The best part of all of this is you can’t tell Cruise is 5’6…. That they have specific shooting philosophy based around making him seem average height is kind of Awesome.

Tom knows how to sell a scene. I read the books and liked his two movies. But I like it better when I don't think of him as Reacher. I liked the Alan Ritchson series. He's the right size, but TC's acting and delivery is so much better!
I would pay for a series of Reacher spoofs where he experiences what would actually happen to him. (Addendum edit): Over the course of the week I've noticed a small but significant percentage of folks who seriously think I was referring to Reacher's odds against the thugs. Perhaps I wasn't being clear. I was referring to what would happen when our Noble Constables arrived to utterly ruin every aspect of his life and not magically cut him loose book after book. (I feel like there's a term paper on Socioeconomic Caste Status in here somewhere) I apologize for the misunderstanding.
Believe me, Tom Cruise most likely trained for weeks in prep for the role. He's that dedicated. I "played" a game of 9 ball with him at the rap party for Color of Money. He broke and then ran the table. He held that table as long as he played, which was for quite a few games. He does all of this own stunts. I wouldn't fuck with him.
@@hanburgundy4317 yes and no, probly the problem with this scene is not them mobs attacking Tom one by one, its Tom who grunts to a single rib punch, I remember a dude here in Philippines who fought 5 or 6 kagawad (local authority) at a same time , 3 of them already grabbing his leg another is grabing from back, his forehead, backhead and knees are bleeding from struggling and fighting back that those kagawads needed to call another kagawads just to calm him down, that guys wasnt even drunk. To make it short, if you have enough endurance and energy, the scene might be possible (might be)
I feel that this scene is a perfect example of why Tom Cruise did such a good job with the character, because if they had gotten someone who did actually resemble the Jack Reacher character it would be kind of a given that he could take on this group of guys if anything we might be thinking why would they challenge such a man, but here with Tom not being a typical huge action hero type it's more entertaining seeing someone his size take on multiple guys and some bigger than himself.
It's fantasy not even a bigger guy could take out this Many dudes without a weapon. Maybe a bunch of teenage punks without fight experience, but certainly not a group of semi experienced fighting men. Don't get delusional there is a difference fighting men with rules versus a real fight.

That is the thing, you can spot SAS, special Forces guys a mile away - although great at what they do, they are no good as spies, undercover work - as said they stick out like a saw thumb. Now the 5ft 5-8, kind of guy - muscle, toned but not over the top weight lifting guy - just walks by, with no one paying any attention - that to me is why Tom does so well in this role - and the character should be like Tom - as that kind of guy/spy, is never sussed out until it is too late - he is unassuming, uninteresting, flies under the radar every time - people instantly over look him(no pun there, me and Tom are the same height, so I can't say shit) - you know, things that a spy need to be able to do - not stand out in a crowd, yet with a level of training and ability that would put pretty much special forces world wide to shame. Add to that intelligence and fore planning - a very dangerous adversary. This is what makes this movie brilliant and Tom as Reacher a dam good choice.
Cruise at 5'6" tall pretending to be the 6'5" Reacher is comedy gold. I read every single Reacher story. His height is integral to his character, plots and action. To pretend otherwise is pure hubris.

Every fight scene in today's movies has 💯 to do with Bruce lee
Bruce developed his art Jeet Kune Do and focused on practical street fighting. "Anything goes" mentality. This eventually sparked mixed martial arts and yes, is used in many modern fight scenes.
The first guy looks like Stifflers brother.
Darrens getting that street justice so rightfully deserved. Equalizer 2 took care of 4 in the hotel room.

he was certifiably "not okay" at that moment. and the following one.
...true definition of sadist psycho...
That elbow to the face. One of my favorite scenes.
@@dmitryowens TF does that have to do with Cruise size not matching the character envisioned in Lee Childs books?
@@trog777
I've never read any of those books or even watched the movies - I just don't appreciate shorter men being spoken of in a condescending belittling derogatory manner.
Tom may not have the right size to play Reacher as he's written in the books, but he captured the swagger and confidence perfectly.
Exactly. Better than the tv Teacher who has the size but lacks the suaveness

Arrogance-Offensive display of superiority or self importance. Overbearing. Pride
Tv Reacher didn't care about the murders until he found out it was his brother.

I've hardly separated my love between an actor and a private person with all his weird beliefs as much as with Tom Cruise.

I know him as an actor not as a person. As an actor he’s one of my favorites. The media says all kinds of horrible things about people, most of the time it’s b.s. So I can’t judge him as a person based on the media.
I had a chance meeting with him in a store. He came across as a great guy.
Agree
He isn't a junky driving his car in to restaurants, he doesn't beat women, he's a genuinely nice person to fans who meet him in public. Other actors say he's great to work with. Is it really him you find weird? Or is it the scientology?
Tom cruise is short and it’s about as believable as scientology
The best part of all of this is you can’t tell Cruise is 5’6…. That they have specific shooting philosophy based around making him seem average height is kind of Awesome.

Yea... Reacher is a monster in the books. Cruise (great actor) is a midget lol.

I would pay for a series of Reacher spoofs where he experiences what would actually happen to him.
What? when he would become the predator and Hansen pops out?
Believe me, Tom Cruise most likely trained for weeks in prep for the role. He's that dedicated. I "played" a game of 9 ball with him at the rap party for Color of Money.

I read every single Reacher story. His height is integral to his character, plots and action. To pretend otherwise is pure hubris.
Say what you will about Tom cruise’s stature, the man delivers the lines expertly.
You have to admire The Cruise...he does a great job here, totally convincing even though he is smaller than the book character. That first back left elbow to the face is a beaut....haha...whether you are big or small it is the skill set and the core strength that will work in your favour.
