My best friend, Robert, got me into AVGN back in 2007. He was OBSESSED. Well, his favorite Nintendo game to talk (incessantly) about was "A Boy and His Blob". He was beyond excited for the Wii remake. Anyway, Robert passed suddenly in 2016, and it's never been the same watching these without having a discussion with him about them afterwards. I'm watching twice for you, Rob. Miss you buddy

Loved this game as a kid. I always preferred the quirkier interesting games like this and Maniac Mansion. I used to play with my whole family so we all helped out like a team, even my grandpa offered advice while we played Nintendo. As a family team it was cool because you could get stuck and then dad would take over and figure the hard stuff out. I remember this being my grandpa's favorite game and my grandma's favorite was Maniac Mansion. They always figured out how to do the puzzles. Miss those guys. RIP

I have a lot of nostalgia for this one, I owned it as a kid. I have a ton of respect for David Crane. Imagine a two person team trying to release a fully playable game like that on a modern console today in six weeks.

I had the sequel, Rescue of Princess Blobette, on the Game Boy in the early 90s. It was equally confusing as a kid, but fun tossing around jellybeans to transform your pet blob. The soundtrack and music cues were exactly the same as the original, big nostalgia 😌

I used the Game Genie to explore hidden areas of a lot of NES games, including this one. In this game in particular, there are hidden chambers that were never meant to be part of the game. Inside a bunch of rooms, the programmers hid a poem about the blob turning into a shape to help a kid. You have to fall through the floor in the right place to reach it, but if you don't have the game genie then you just die. I've looked it up but nobody seems to know about this!

Great review, but in case you missed the "pun" for the cinnamon jelly beans: cinnamon is the flavor used for "Red Hots" candies, hence a cinnamon jellybean gives you a "Red Hot" blowtorch. I loved the puns used in the transformation choices! But the couple times I tried this game, I lost badly. Definitely a unique experience, which you encapsulated perfectly in your review.

I remember playing this game on a bootleg PS1 cd that included many NES games. I never ketchup the purpose of the game, but it was a lot of fun to use the Jellybeans until they ran out.

I remember renting this from Randall's in Katy TX (back when grocery stores had movie/game rentals inside). No manual, of course, but I had so much fun figuring out which jellybeans did what. I remember getting as far as riding the rocket before I had to return it to avoid the astronomical late fees. It's still one of the most memorable NES games from my childhood. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
