Remember, James has been making nerd videos since 2004 so in about a year we will have 20 years of AVGN
That’s epic
It still is just twenty years ago that Kid Icarus was released! Riiiiiiight?
That is some dedication for a show :) And I just love it.
The locket protector pinned on the costume is classic Nerd!!! 😂💪💪💪💪😂
I still can't believe i've been watching AVGN for that long
The fact that James’ Greek costume even kept the signature nerd pen pocket is simply amazing.
Greek Geek
Personally, I would have gone with a more diegetic adaption. Like a pouch with a roman stylus is it.
But... the anachronism works for him.
Little deets
I noticed and loved that touch too.
The almighty pocket protector, with that you're one slide rule away from acquiring the top nerd status in the school caste system.
I remember playing this for hours not knowing what to do, just like every game from my childhood.
😂 it's amazing how many games I went back to play in my adult years that I realised I had no idea what I was doing back in the day
I think that's the reason why Mario is is still the most clever design in videogames
@@franciscoastudillo699 Probably.
I used to come home from middle school and play this game every day. Got to the point where I could speed run through the whole game 4 times before dinner. I miss those early days of gaming.
Having also played Kid Icarus, I do not.
The Nerd nerding out about weird mythological stories is the best part of this episode
He is the best history teacher ever
Indeed!
Today I learned that the stuff on Deviant Art and Tumbler are nothing new.
As someone obsessed with myth, that made me laugh the hardest.
absolutely
The fact that I’m not sure if shooting the camera was intentional or not is a testament to James’ filmmaking skills.
I don’t think it was on purpose but he keeps going to finish the clip.
13:46 best moment in the video
Never forget the kid koll episode when he throws the cartridge and lands on a trash can behind him XD
Looks like he shot it stopped for a sec and kept going realizing the camera didn't fall
I think he didn't shoot it, that looks like an after effect.
Crazy how faithful Kid Icarus Uprising is. It's literally pure fan service with less tedious gameplay.
i like how all the characters just beef over a telepathic discord call during the gameplay. It’s a fun way to deliver story without stopping for a cutscene every 5 seconds. Honestly i’d like it if more games took that approach
Mario was playing Kid Icarus in the movie.
thats why he died
@@intel_3245 I'm Finished.
@@theprototype2518 have One on me 🍷
I love how James was genuinely concerned about hitting the camera with an arrow for exactly half a second.
Broke character for a quick second lol
13:40 for those looking again.
@@johndavidthornton13:47 *
And the rant starts at 13:33 👍
Reminds me of the Indiana Jones episode, when he whipped a lamp and broke it.
Although the camera shake here looks like it was added in editing, seeing as there is 0 motion blur, and only shakes left and right. So it may have been scripted.
45 years old here , wife , 2 daughters .
when returning from a stressful day from work , playing something retro listening to the nerd "seasons videos" is therapy for me.
I run all his old seasons in chronological order and it's like the best audiobook for me when doing chores or just chillin' :)
2 wives, four daughters here. Unstressful day, only off season vids
No wives or children. Nerd is one of the last things that genuinely makes me smile.
ditto
It's interesting how similar your age and family composition is to that of James himself.
The arrow hitting the camera was hilarious and the fact that you can't tell if that was scripted or an honest reaction that he just played off makes it even funnier
I thought nobody would bring it up lol
After 19 years, AVGN hasn't lost it. Its always like a breath of fresh air with every upload. Thank you so much James!
19 years and James is still bringing it. We should all be so lucky to have a job for nearly 20 years that we still love.
I wonder if he truly loves it, or if he does it because it's what brings the most money
Does he still love it?
@@Posiman nah
I think hes over it, hes said it in a past video
@@batofdestiny7801 interesting pfp
Kid Icarus' music was absolutely LEGENDARY. The main theme was actually an incredibly gorgeous creation.
The game was hard as HELL (lol), but beating it was awesome, and for whatever reason, the fact that the final level was *easy* ... was actually a great reward for fighting through the previous difficulty of everything else.
I never really had too much trouble except for the 3rd dungeon level where I was locked in an almost endless loop of getting turned into an eggplant and going to the hospital. VERY frustrating because it'd usually be the last room right before the boss fight that I'd get turned
agreed
Lol, the eggplant wizard strikes again! 🧙🏽♂️🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆
It's decent but there are better ones
@@ilikepancakes1426 Fun Fact: The guy who directed this game would go on to direct Mario Land 1.
10:14 the delivery is just 10/10 perfect. I now have no doubt that that is what it's called.
9:28 The editing gags of this whole section have to be my favorite thing to see out of this recent new AVGN style.
My cousin showed me Kid Icarus in 1988, I couldn’t get that far into the game but it left an impression on me. Thanks AVGN for nostalgia
I don't think that many people could get that far , it's a really hard game to play.
The day always gets better when an AVGN episode gets uploaded
Ditto.
Agreed
True True True.......
📠
He gatta do something about that forehead 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
13:46 I love how James quickly recovered from his concern back into talking smack.
I wasn't born in the 80's or 90's, so I mostly learn about old games through people like James and others on the internet. However, I remember beating Kid Icarus on the NES classic and having a lot of fun, although I do agree that it is a challenge.
I love hearing about the past enough that I got a NES
Kid Icarus needs to make a comeback. I’ve been hoping Uprising comes to switch then a new game bc that really gave Pit and Palutena the love they needed
Uprising was a great game, with some of the worst controls ever
Game is supposed to be Nintendo Hard. Without that it just isn't Kid Icarus
The maze levels were great and reminds me a lot of Zelda and Metroid
@@lucapirilli did we play the same game? Once you get used to them it's really precise.
@@lucapirilli Why do you think the controls are bad?
@@geo4290 you can only play for small bursts because of the hand cramps.... and the ground controls are pretty bad since it's not the same type of gameplay
still an amazing game that deserves a port
There’s no 8-bit music intro that evokes nostalgic feelings greater than ‘Kid Icarus’.
4:46
Iron Maiden=Zelda
Metallica=Metroid
Guns N Roses=Mario
Nickelback=Kid Icarus
Kid Icarus is like the youngest sibling of the four great games of the Golden Age. Smaller and not as impressive, but had a part to play nonetheless.
This is one of my favorite games on the nes it’s such a classic. These days the series itself deserves so much better, it died, was revived in a glorious fashion, and then died again
A solid choice to review
Other than the controls I really liked that 3DS game they did was really cool.
Stylus controls that couldn't be made conventional, is what killed the 3DS series entry. I also love the original NES game.
And that's ironic because pit is an angel.
I hope it'll be revived again on the Nintendo Switch (rumour has it it will).
I love James' demeanor. Even when he is in character as the nerd you can just tell the guy is humble and gentle. His whole demeanor is wholesome all-around. He must have been raised by great parents.
He's adorable
Yea for real
Jesus take this g@y love fest somewhere else.
I feel like James had a lot of fun recording this episode especially the nerd farms part
Why are you doing this?
I could never beat this game as a kid. Finally beat it in 2013 while overseas for the army. That was probably the highlight of that deployment.
I somehow beat it as a kid and don't think I could now
Waiting for the war?
😂😂😂😂😂
Brings back memories where my friends and I had each had one of the Titan games. I had Metroid, our cool friend had Zelda, and the poor guy who had Icarus ended up taking one for the team.
. much appreciated
Kid Icarus amazes me how obscured it became for some and afterwards it got an unexpected sequel kid Icarus uprising and that just blew up the series with how great it was. Course we haven't got a new one since but the characters have stuck around in the smash bros series.
What system of kid Icarus uprising? Never heard of it.
@@michaelknight1303 It was on the 3DS
It had a sequel before on GameBoy. Kid Icarus of myths and monsters. Was one of my favorites as a kid.
i wouldnt say it was unexpected bc brawl revived pit with a completely new design that was used for uprising
The eggplant/hospital thing reminds me of earthbound when your head turns into a diamond or you have a mushroom growing out of your dome.
"Please doctor, fix my head"
James is KILLING it with this episode, very quality jokes/bits throughout. This is definitely one of the better ones.
16:54 - 18:37
You know... After a serious day of Depression and stress from work, feeling like I just want to give up on everything... Seeing Nerd in the ridiculous Kid Icarus costume made me immediately forget all those problems and smile. Thank you so much James and all the crew that helped make this episode possible.
I hope you're ok 👍 dude.
@@thegamingprozone1941 honestly, due to laughing so much I do feel better. Thank you. :3 asking helps and so does AVGN. Lol
Same....
You and me both man...
@VKermode maybe you should speak to a professional?
One of the most wholesome endings to a Nerd episode I can ever remember 😊
besides "Contra"...
9:48 The angel on my shoulder reminding me of proper driving etiquette.
One of my go to videos whenever I need something to fill a void is AVGN videos. I always seem to find something to help me relax or smile and entertain me. To see that there are still new videos being made is really, really awesome. I hope we still have years and years of nerd!
AVGN must live forever!! Thank you James. I'm 34 and you bring me back to my childhood. You're content is a UA-cam treasure!
Same here, I'm 35 it brings back my child hood too, especially when I flipped out when I couldn't clock kid Icarus lol
His basement just makes me happy, the shelves of movies and video games just stirs up memories
Facts!!! I been watching since my highschool days im 27 now and every epsiode bringsme so much joy 😂
37 here lol
34 here. Love James. Love AVGN. I’m truly happy that he’s still doing it after all these years. A world without the Angry Video Game Nerd wouldn’t be a world I’d want to live in.
13:46 The genuine surprise on this face, I firmly believe he shot the camera by accident!
13:46
I love that he shoots the camera and leaves it in
Hard to believe there's only three Kid Icarus games:
1. Kid Icarus (1986)
2. Kid Icarus: Of Myth and Monsters (1991)
3. Kid Icarus: Uprising (2012)
It should be criminal that this guy's been doing this for almost 20 years and he's still THIS funny and entertaining

Crazy I've been watching AVGN for almost 20 years now! I hope this show goes on for another 20!! ILL NEVER GET SICK OF WATCHING JAMES PLAY 8/16 BIT GAMES!!!
Can't wait for his review of Skyrim and GTA V
I could imagine him still doing it as an old man like he did a parody of in one of his vids. And I'll still be watching as an old man also XD
Hope we get an 80 yo nerd reviewing all the terrible vintage PS6 games.
i HAVE gotten pretty sick of it, but still watch occasionally if the game interests me :)
Angry Video Game Gramps 2050.
I love kid Icarus. It’s easily one of my favorite NES games
15:47 That’s what I’ll do when I got hit by the eggplant wizard’s projectiles! Not only that, I better wait until the text finishes typing “Let me remove the eggplant curse.”
This has one of the most wholesome endings in any AVGN episode. Well done James!!
Agreed!
I was expecting it to be a lot more brutal to the game. It is NOT an easy game, especially when you start. Definitely one of my favorites on the NES though.
he's getting soft XD
@@CBM64 he's a Dad now...a family Guy...and it shows. 🤣
And the least angry episodes tbh :D
Freakin' love the angel outfit with the nerd pocket protector... killin' it as always, James

The Guitar Guy (Kyle Justin) would have been surprised if he saw The Nerd use his pocket pouch for something. XD

Dang, I haven't watched the Nerd in a long, long while, and this episode really brought it all back for me. Really felt like classic AVGN. Thank you for nearly 20 years of fun, James.

😂 when Nerd hit the camera with the arrow, I lost it! 😂 😂😂
Loved that it was playing the Underground Theme from Super Mario Land when he starts talking about Horus and Set's "story"
When a new AVGN episode drops, my spirit is lifted.
You sure it isn’t a rolling rock?
so much this
I love how we're learning Mythology from the Angry Video Game Nerd. Just what I needed.
Mythology and cosmology, two in one!
@@Sara3346 Fun Fact: This game was a big inspiration to Owlboy.
"Gah, I'm glad you guys know all these pooping outside rules!" - Eric Cartman
That farming skit is full on classic.
13:51 cracked me up so much. XD Just the way he got side-tracked from his entire rant by the little prop torch making noise, as well as the absolute INTENSITY of him staring and yelling at it.
Also, never even heard of those more messed up mythological stories about Orion's birth or the Egyptian gods jacking onto each other until now... I actually learned something new from an AVGN video.... huh.
14:42 Best part is the 3DS game makes this joke too, only one of the other characters cuts him off to shut him up
That’s one of the things I loved most about Uprising, the humor! It wasn’t afraid to poke fun at the NES original.
8:53 "who came on who" is my favorite AC/DC song
Kid Icarus Uprising on the 3ds is chef's kiss. I still play it online. Such a great game and needs a switch remaster.
The music from Kid Icarus takes me right back to 1987. I had just moved to the US and a friend was showing me games on this thing called a "Nintendo" that we didn't really have in the UK because it was unpopular there. I saved up my earnings and shortly afterwards I bought my very own Nintendo, borrowing lots of games from that friend.
There's an unexplainable wistfulness that tune evokes in me.
I grew up with a combination of PC, NES/SNES games in the UK (too young for the ZX Spectrum/BBC Micro) and always find it weird hearing that, but when I look back I realise almost everyone else had a MasterSystem or Megadrive.
Plenty of NES in my UK youth and the SNES and GB were everywhere.
@@MarbleThumbs Fun Fact: The guy who directed this game would go on to direct Mario Land 1.
I didn't need to ask for pricey games to my parents since I had that same friend full of NES games 😂😂😂
Kid Icarus was my favorite game on the NES. I love it still to this day.
I do too.
In the New Super Mario Bros movie there is a part where Mario is playing Nintendo and he is playing Kid Icarus 😂
I can't believe they referenced AVGN in the Mario Movie!
"let me cure you of your eggplant curse" riveting
I like this mellowed out but still cynical and hilarious AVGN. Feels like you nailed the vibe for the modern platform.
Gee I wonder if that has anything to do with us, his audience, being in the relative same age span...
@@trixylizard6970 true, but some channels don't adapt. AVGN has been able to do it.
@@dasdeke Also very true. Did NOT mean to come off sarcastic. It's a problem. :)

This really was a great episode.
As always James is Amazing and were hoping for more vids like this soon!!
Imagine modern video games telling you have to mark your own location lol 😆
13:40
The best way to play this game is "3D Classics: Kid Icarus", which is not emulation but the whole game rewritten from scratch, with all the key gameplay present but the NES jank all removed. Unfortunately it's soon to become completely unobtainable with the 3ds eshop closing this year.
By the way, the reason for the Metroids is that the game was developed by the same team, and uses the same game engine.
19:43 Lady Palutena is NOT a princess, she’s the Goddess of Light.
I was thinking yesterday, “man it would be nice to have a new Angry Video Game Nerd episode “. The universe is kind.
I had that thought about 2 hours ago and then I checked UA-cam and what do you know

Kid Icarus was one of the games that turned me into a gamer. I loved that game so much
Nooooo! The original Zelda did! or in my case Zelda did!
I recommend OwlBoy
for me, Contra and Ninja Gaiden solidified my dedication to NES console gaming
AVGN isn’t just gamer history, it’s history period.
Everything is technically
Can't believe James has been going for this long. He truly is the GOAT
this was honestly a very enjoyable episode, i just hope he stays doing them 20 years more.
I think Kid Icarus big problem was it was meant to be part of a great trio but unlike the other 2 Nintendo never really gave it a legacy. Perhaps if they did release more games it'd be one of Nintendos legendary franchises rather then a small but respected one
I wonder what that would've been like. I can almost guarantee we wouldn't have Uprising, though, not if we're to believe butterfly theory and all that.
The Nerd Farms skit made me chuckle. Especially followed by "grinding." "You're not getting a skit for that one."
*HOW DID I MISS THIS AVGN EPISODE?!*
Seeing James as an angel is something that I never expected to see!
What do you mean? He's always been one!
I thought he was cosplaying as Pit.
There are high schoolers who weren’t even alive when I began watching the Nerd! Thank you James, for hours and hours of laughter! Your videos have helped me get through some very tough struggles these last 15+ years!
19:07 oh baby a triple
I can see someone figuring out that "Hold A+B on the second Controller" cheat by letting their younger sibling pretend to play on the other controller.
I wasn't expecting a new AVGN episode at all! Thank you James! 💪🏻
thats cause they aren't very often anymore
It's 3 years like this
Wow almost 20 year anniversary, you’re great James! 🙌🏽
I thought it was 2005? He is a busy married man so that we have to understand.
The Oedipus quip really made me chuckle.
Literally playing a labyrinth with a monster roaming around. Monstrum
The acting is so great that I keep replaying it! Thank you, James, thank you for keeping innovating AVGN to higher and higher levels
Kid Icarus is one of those games that I respected and loved, even though it didn't love me back. Though, the soundtrack is amazing to this day.
15:54 That’s not that. An area with a nurse is nearby, no matter where you go. Also, It types “Let me remove the eggplant curse.” Then you’ll be back to human!
I'm actually taking a world mythology class and I'm happy to hear you talk about Greek mythology and a little bit of Egypt mythology
The wholesome moments from AVGN always kinda hit the hardest.
Loved the smile at 9:23 then mad again!
Love the Ending so much! Kid Icarus was a fun game and just nice to see it get the respect it needed from AVGN. I’ll always look to the sky at night to see Pit in the Stars.
so do I
Nintendo should bring this ip back. After all Metroid is back now. Kid Icarus needs the sams treatment.
I loved kid Icarus as a kid. I also finished it.
Honestly, Kid Icarus is most known for his Smash Bros. appearances and his 3DS game “Uprising”.
