In Angry Video Game Nerd episode 208, The Nerd opens up a can of worms and takes a gross out look back at the Earthworm Jim series! Often hailed as classics, The Nerd looks to find out if the original Sega Genesis games (or the 3D one for N64) still hold up, or, if they were simply a flash in the pan of the 90s.

Oh my gah
I loved these games but they were SO HARD!!! I was actually thinking of revisiting them now as an older and wiser gamer haha
Fun fact: The manual to Earthworm Jim 2 contained a Table of Contents, Table of Continents, and a Contents of Table which listed all the screws and wood needed to build a table. They really dialed the absurdity up to 11 and eight year old me loved every minute of it.

Jim 1 & 2 are some of the most creative and genius games I've ever played. If you're into surreal comedy and platformers it's a dream come true.
Basically the precursor of Crash Bandicoot if you think about it.
Seeing James put his elbow on the back of the couch and turn around to talk to the camera is a great AVGN classic call-back move
Absolutely. Reminded me of Little Red Hood in particular. His 'random game design' rant was also a callback to the 'Attack of the Mutant Penguins' randomness from the Jaguar episode! Love how he's making his past work for him!
It’s kind of like he’s taking us back…to the pas… I’ll see myself out
@@gamingintrospection I was kind of hoping he'd devolve into just referencing that game considering how random it is lol

Gotta love that Earthworm Jim 3D cared so little for its own awful premise that the ending completely forgets that he's even inside his mind.
So technically the series ended with Jim dying/dead in the hospital

The music in the level "What the Heck" is actually Night on Bald Mountain composed by Modest Mussorgsky
Which was also featured in Disney's Phantasia.

I'm kind of surprised that he didn't mentioned "Andy Asteroids?" level. Music from that level was so catchy, it still just plays in my head occasionally.
The animation in EWJ remains exceptional.
Music/sfx, design, and even difficult gameplay (if you enjoy a challenge) are all beyond stellar, which is the only flaw people seem to give this (and a hilariously disappointing ending.)
The game is progressively hard because it chooses to be, not because of bad controls from the beginning like Top Gun. It's like people complaining about Resident Evil tank controls. Believe it or not, it just takes practice, but everything is consistent and clear so you can improve, which is why people still do speedruns and aren't complaining about broken controls, but with Earthworm Jim everyone knows how to platform so there's even less of a learning curve but more of a difficulty curve, which more games should have.
@@Goblin_Hands Agreed. This game was a joy to play from start to finish. Even after completing it many many times it managed to retain it's playability to me as a kid (and probably me as an adult if I was still a gamer)

Earthworm Jim embodies everything I love about the 90’s. Nostalgia overload!
Same here. Partially why is one of my favorite gaming mascots of the decade.

Same.
It was one of my favorite games as a kid. Probably a big part of why my humor is so messed up.
Groovy!
The fact he’s still going on is so inspiring. I hope this never ends.
James really hit gold with AVGN. All these years later, and the show still goes on with new episodes 😃 Thank you James and everyone who has worked on this show. 👍
EWJ2 was hands down my fav childhood game, the salamander stage plays Moonlight Sonata. The menu song is an ear worm (haha) too. This game was the embodiment of “lol random *holds up spork*” of the 90s.
Hearing a 16 bit rendition of Moonlight Sonata is still quite a unique feeling for me (it’s one of my favorite piano pieces). And since the SNES and Genesis each had a unique sound to their music due to their different sound chips I feel like each version fits a slightly different mood.
The SNES version called that stage "Villi People" which is a nice little joke.
I'm surprised that he didn't talk about how the guys who worked on the Sega version of Aladdin also worked on this game. Hence why it feels so smoothy animated and like a cartoon.

The cow was launched into the movie "Twister" that came out the same year. It was still flying.

Earthworm Jim is like a video game equivalent of an early 90s psychedelic cartoon. Yet another franchise that def couldn't make the 3D transition. Excellent episode!
That's why I love 2D, cuz there are just some things you can't transition to 3D very well.. I'll argue most 16 bit game franchises never transitioned well to 3D.
It could have easily worked as a cartoony FPS or ratchet and clank type game, it just wasn't built to be a collectathon.
@@HiNRGboy Say what you want but some 3D Sonic games were simply awesome. I actually enjoyed most of them, but then I'm a big fan of the franchise.
@@HiNRGboy love you all
earth worm jim 64 was fun actually
16 Bit Earthworm Jim suffers from the infamous "Battletoad effect": it starts with the game being what you actually want to play but quickly devolves into a frustrating nightmare. 17:46 sums it up perfectly.
I've been waiting over a decade to hear what avgn had to say on earthworm Jim 3d.
it was the most anger I had ever felt towards a video game when I was a kid back when you would rent video games on the weekends. That psychrow boss fight was easily the most frustrating experience I've ever had in a video game.
