This is episode 204 of the Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN)! When it comes to movie-based games, you’d think The Nerd covered them all by now, but here’s another one based on the Bruce Willis film, Hudson Hawk on NES. The movie is a bit of a mixed bag, so lets see what kind of "bag' the game is! Released by Sony Imagesoft in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, you play as the titular Hudson Hawk (Willis), the world's greatest thief, who is forced to steal three of Da Vinci's precious artifacts by the Mario Brothers Mafia. The movie also starred Danny Aiello, Andie MacDowell, Richard E. Grant, and Sandra Bernhard.

Electronic Gaming Monthly actually has a pretty amusing story involving this game. Apparently their editors worked out this big promotion for both the movie and the game and they wanted to have it on their front cover. The end result was a low-res cut-out pic of Bruce Willis awkwardly standing on the right side the side of the cover next to headlines and thumbnails of other stories inside that particular issue. Electronic Gaming Monthly would later call it their worst cover ever, especially after both the movie and the game went on to flop hard.
Just gave it a look, that cover looks bizarre.

This really felt like an old AVGN episode, I still remember the days of binge watching of the nerds so I can see someone beat a difficult classic game because I wouldnt dare touch said game.

Man, this episode REALLY brought back the nostalgia for me, as it reminded me of some of your earlier videos such as Back to the Future, where you would intersplice clips from the movie. Hilarious and awesome! Hard to believe how many years have passed since those old videos. Thank you for always being there to give me a laugh!

I remember seeing Hudson Hawk in the theaters when I was a kid. I loved it. Still kinda do. It walks a weird line between serious and silly. Not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but not as bad as people say.
Nothing like a new AVGN episode after gettin off work. Love this.

I absolutely adored the GB version of this game as a kid - had no idea it was a movie until I was a teenager, I was just happy to have a new game.
I discovered this on a 100 in one game cartridge I got from my aunt years ago.. I never tried to complete it, but I remember its kickass soundtrack :)

I love how much this feels like an older AVGN episode with the movie screenshots and clips interjecting. The jokes were also hilarious throughout, especially the advertising ones. James going strong after all these years.

Hudson Hawk is amazing and is more of a spoof / real comedy instead of an action movie like Die Hard with more comedy. It failed at the box office because people thought it was Die Hard. Bruce Willis started his career as a comedian...

the intro music has become so nostalgic for me i almost tear up when i hear it. not just for the last decade of youtube but for the 90s and late 80s when these games were new and things felt easier

Wasnt there a thing in the movie where he timed something by singing the "would you like to swing on a star" song? Like wouldnt it have made sense to have like a musical level where it had that music and maybe you have to avoid traps using the timing in the song?
I dunno maybe im insane and remembered that all wrong since its been like 30 years.

Thanks! It's actually a really simple edit. I stood off camera, and took the beer out of James's hand while he stayed as still as possible. Then he did a reaction shot after I got out of frame. The bottle breaking is just a png of the bottle that I photoshopped out of his hand and used the shatter effect in AfterEffects on. Then it's just a matter of cutting the two shots together, adding a stock water splash effect, and tweeking the physics of the shatter effect
Didn't look that great lol, it exploded so slowly and the splash is also too slow.

I haven't watched AVGN for YEARS and watching him now looks very different than I remembered.
Hudson Hawk is the movie that introduced me to Cappucino. And boy did i have decades of fun drinking that, until i can't drink it anymore... Anyway, love the movie, part of childhood nostalgia.
The rant at the end was unexpectedly perfect.
Hudson Hawk is one of my favorite movies! I love the humor and the cast is epic. Definitely recommend.
But the film failed at the box office: apparently the audience was waiting for an action movie, and they did not like the comedic direction of the film.

I dont think that 2 or three tropes make up the magic of why we fell in love with AVGN... but constantly playing into those 2 or three tropes.. while winking at the camera.. makes me feel used.

@@Gorlokk666 I think the attempt to mimic the older episodes is a bit forced, and probably a deliberate move by whoever is writing the scripts nowadays, but I certainly prefer them to everything released in the previous past years. The line about the hypothetical end screen to Contra actually made me laugh a bit. That hasn't happened when watching AVGN since probably.. 2012?

I actually rented this as a kid and I loathed it completely and ended up returning it the following day, forgot about it until I saw this video.
The movie itself wasn't bad it was a goofy type of comedy action film. But I've always enjoyed Bruce Willis films like the Die Hard movies, Pulp Fiction, Death Becomes Her, the Sixth Sense, the Last Boy Scout, and Fifth Element.
I rented Roger Rabbit as a kid...i hated it!

I can't believe you're hating on Hudson Hawk. It's clearly a comedy that knew what it was trying to do and NAILED IT! It's a great movie that lets Bruce Willis show his comedy chops like his moonlighting days. "I must commune with the dolphins now."
