"I used to know a blissed-out hippie-chick in Baltimore," recalled Byrne in the liner notes of Once in a Lifetime: The Best of Talking Heads. "She once told me that she used to do acid (the drug, not music) and lay down on the field by the Yoo-hoo chocolate soda factory. Flying out of her body, etc etc. It seemed like such a tacky kind of transcendence… but it was real! A new kind of religion being born out of heaps of rusted cars and fast food joints. And this girl was flying above it all, but in it too."
Drummer Chris Frantz said of the song, "It's a story about a woman who has the power to levitate above the ground and to check out all her neighbors from a kind of bird's eye view. And the guy who's writing the song is in love with her and he kinda wishes she would just be more normal and, like, come on back down to the ground [Laughs], but she doesn't. She goes floating over the backyard and past the buildings and the schools and stuff and is absolutely [upside-down] to him in every way."[
This takes me back to my college days in the 80’s. “Stay Up Late,” “Road To Nowhere,” “Wild Wild Life,” and “Nothing But Flowers,” to name a few.

I saw David Byrne at a small club in Indy about 25 years ago. He even put on the pink fur suit for a couple songs.

One of my favourite Talking Heads songs - and a notorious earworm! The lyrics are open to a lot of interpretations - maybe she was dead, maybe she was just very high. It's great to hear that the band have finally resolved their differences and are possibly getting back together. So many great songs. Try "Heaven" next!

My favorite Talking Heads song 👍 Also, Once in a Lifetime is awesome.
You can't help moving to this song, it's happy too
I enjoyed this quirky song and all their quirky songs. But my appreciation of this group went to the next level when I saw the concert movie, Stop Making Sense. If you review any song from that movie (they're all great), you won't be disappointed
I totally agree and a good start is "Psycho Killer" ...."Once in a lifetime" ...then "Life during wartime"....I went to the concert when the tour first came out and it was phenominal!!!!

Great, great song!! Did you do Take Me to the River yet? It's a cover song of an Al Green song. They honored him while also completely making it their own. They're just phenomenal.

The Talking Heads had the best music videos(Peter Gabriel a close 2nd)
This album was easily the most straight-forward Pop that Talking Heads ever produced.
Talking Heads are one of the most interesting bands to come out of the 80's. David Byrne is unique to say the least.

I died laughing at your comments. You certainly should be aware of the metaphysical realities that may be the focus of someone using hallucinogens. It is a story told about a woman with a pleasant elevation---she WAS. Her presence in the universe. She takes off her dress to have the separation of what is truly just herself apart from all she observes----and she WAS. This behavior is not acceptable in many communities and "he" (her partner) will not approve. This is what she has done wrong. But she is proud of her existence looking down on all there is---and she WAS. Incommunicado. Too far gone. No one knows where her mind is located. Until she returns, she is a missing person. If you asked her afterwards she would tell you---she WAS.
