    What a pleasure it is to listen to a reactor that listens, (and watches), so openly, carefully, and actively. As a result you notice so many subtle details almost all others miss. And you're so articulate regarding what you do notice. On every video, even about subjects you humbly admit to being ignorant about, you display remarkable insight and intelligence. Put your enthusiasm, positivity and intense curiosity on top of that, and you've got a great channel. Congrats. Even better than that, you'll be an interesting and expansive parent for some kid some day.

      Yeah without her and her husband (and then Bernie funking on keys) this was just a weird art school keyboard band. I mean props to Jerry Harrison for being part of the Modern Lovers but this is nowhere near as consequential without the groove.

    A band making history. It was recorded over two days by Jonathan Denme and is considered one of the greatest shows ever recorded.
    There is no doubt that David Byrne (the lead singer) was born Scottish and with many talents, one of them is the ability to bring music and artistic performances together as a whole. And a lot of fun!
    PS: You are getting late with the reaction to the GOAT, the one, the unique, the Purple Highness... Prince. Check'im LIVE and:
    1. You won't regret it
    2. You'll become a fan for life.

    You really should watch this concert movie. They go on like this for about 2 hours, dancing, jumping, and running around like lunatics. Its a hell of a show man, giving the audience their money's worth.
    I should add that they perform the material pretty much perfectly even with all of the chaos. There's some serious talent on that stage.

    The Talking Heads are often categorized as punk/new wave. The truth is they are their own genre. I recommend Girlfriend is Better from this same live performance next. Their music and particularly their videos are quirky and different.

    It’s literally about life during wartime. We’ve never had to imagine here, a situation of being under attack or our way of life totally disrupted and chaotic. He’s trying to survive in war conditions which is why he doesn’t have time for anything but getting through the roadblock so they can tap the phone lines in their student and housewife costumes.

  • @wheatthicks
    @wheatthicks Рік тому +3

    Their genre usually gets labeled as New Wave. They were part of the 70s punk/new wave movement in NYC (They opened for The Ramones at CBGB’s for their first show ever). Musically their sound is a combination of rock, funk, afrobeat, and more.

    "Does anyone have any questions?"
    It's actually rhetorical. Talking Heads were all about the perverseness of life and using hyperbole to bring it home. You should perhaps hear more of this particular documentary. It was directed by Jonathan Demme before he went on to win an oscar for directing Silence of the Lambs. That much intellect going into this production, many believe it is the greatest live concert documentary ever filmed. Mick who?

    First thing you should know about The Talking Heads is that the four core members met in Art College in Boston. So being weird is just part and parcel of who they are, especially David Byrne, the lead singer, song writer, and guitarist. The weird noises you thought were guitar at first is a synthesizer and Jerry Harrison, one of the 4 core members, was playing the solo that you heard. The other synth player, that you didn't hear as much on this song, was Bernie Worrell, the legendary keyboard player from Parliament/Funkadelic. Trivia: David Byrne grew up in Baltimore (I'm from MD, and lived there for a while) and he makes a little nod to Baltimore early in the song with the mention of 'lived in Brown Stones', which is a style of house in a lot of Baltimore City. Keep going with songs from this concert, "Stop Making Sense" - they're all awesome! Thanks for listening and sharing.
    Peace from SF

    • @ernesthakey3396
      @ernesthakey3396 4 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for the brownstone rabbit hole you just sent me down! Not just Baltimore though, you can definitely find brownstones in NYC and Boston; I first encountered the style up here in the Boston area. Definition:
      "a kind of reddish-brown sandstone used for building.
      "marble, brownstone, and brick all played major roles in New York construction"
      a building faced with reddish-brown sandstone.
      plural noun: brownstones"
      "A brownstone is a building made from, well, brownstone-a dark sandstone quarried primarily from New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maine. Since this stone is soft (at least as far as stones go) and easy to carve, it lends itself to ornate ornamentation that makes these homes highly sought-after real estate today."
      So brownstones can definitely be found both in the Mid-Atlantic states and in the northeast, I'm not sure where else but with the material primarily quarried in those three states, it makes sense for it to mostly be used within reasonable transportation distance of those sources.
      Have you seen any brownstones in SF? San Francisco I presume? Or maybe Santa Fe.

    In answer to your question about alot of the 'WTF Sound is That!....
    They did quite alot of feeding instruments through a MOOG Synthesizer. An old school Synth that still used cables to connect different elements (Not sure if they still get used).. This lead to quite a bit of innovation in Audio Production. They did this not only for the obvious artistic flavor, but also because they wanted a sound that they could create just as good live as in the studio. They weren't the pioneers of the technique, but they were certainly Masters of it!

    NOT DISCO. New Wave.
    You have to know a bit about what was going on in the world at that time. Running on stage was running during war time, you didn't notice the guitar player "shooting" at him as he ran by the first time. And, he's not taking questions at the end, he's being funny. Your generation doesn't get metaphor very well, you all think too literal. You're not used to creativity in music and lyrics and performance. He is a bit paranoid, moving around time, has a stash of weapons, stay away from the window, tapping phone lines, has some passports and visas, changes his hair style, dress in suit and ties or like house wives. I hope music can get back to this purposeful, artistic, and creative way.
