David Byrne - Full dance rehearsals for Stop Making Sense (1983)

- 40 years ago, David Byrne rehearsed dances for Talking Heads' upcoming Speaking in Tongues tour by recording video of himself to determine which moves worked better than others, which developed into many of the iconic moves seen in the Stop Making Sense movie, filmed at the end of 1983 and released in 1984. It was recently rereleased by A24 in restored 4K. These videos, recorded in David Byrne's loft, have been mentioned before in interviews and now after 40 years the footage is finally available! Quite a treasure trove of stuff here for Talking Heads fans to enjoy.
This compiles a diversity of moves (some of which recognizably made it through to the movie) across several different scenes, with some scenes rearranging the furniture, possibly to simulate the varying stage environment.
Lynn Mabry & Ednah Holt, who performed on the tour as backup vocalists (& dancers!) also appear towards the end of this video, as well as Adelle Lutz who would later be part of Stop Making Sense's crew as well as David Byrne's wife.
Note that the recording does NOT include sound (although sometimes clips from this footage get edited with music to fit the dances)
A bunch of the Stop Making Sense tracks would make a nice soundtrack to watching this, so I recommend playing that in the background of this video!

Words could never express the way this man makes me feel.
As someone like david who is autistic, i think that his dancing is unique and brilliant and that they fit him and the music they play perfectly.. they give me the same ramshackled yet awesome and expressive vibes that Ian Curtis’ (singer for Joy Division) dances do, despite their morbid inspirations. I myself do some of these dances when listening to music myself… and anyone who tries to tear David down for them wishes they had his skill

I am sure a few Talking Heads fans will clean this up and add music to it.
I never realized Dave put this much work behind his dance moves, always thought it was just improved.
