It's not even a glitch. Were they so anal about having people play the iNteNDeD wAY they wouldn't even let runners use normally harmful mechanics to their advantage?
Speedrunning be like:
"He discovered a trick that was immensely hard to pull off. It required ten angle perfect inputs, thirteen pixel perfect inputs, and alternating buttons every 60th of a second without pausing. It took place in the last minute of the run, and he had to be there on the perfect frame, which meant completely perfect play up to that point. Additionally, not only was his position required to be right, but his subpixel position, which takes too long to manipulate and is essentially RNG (7/3000 chance) had to be right as well. The trick involves unplugging your console from the controller, the monitor and the battery strategically to get a certain power flow, which if failed could electricute you; those inputs also had to be done within 1/60 of a second as well. In all, the trick saved around three tenths of a second. Obviously, it was worth going for it."

I'm 37 and I just discovered what speed running is. Castlevania was the first and only game I ever beat when I was a kid. At least a few dozen times. This video got me back into gaming. Thank you!

The best example of this I ever got was when the algorithm recommended a nearly 2 hour long video about the fast pass system at Disney World that ended up being the most interesting UA-cam video I have ever seen. I’ve watched it like 4 times, which is a lot given it’s length. Could not recommend more.

I was thinking I was going to think this before watching the video, and yes, now I believe Castlevania is a masterpiece, and I almost cried watching the video.
I love how collaborative speedrunning is. Everyone is basically putting all their tech out in the open so that they can completely for execution on a level playing field. At most someone gets Behemothed now and then (see the Super Metroid video for context) but even then a surprise record from a strategy change is usually accompanied by a big form post inviting everyone else to try to new trick and push it to the limit. It's really such a wholesome competition.

kmac came back out of retirement, and got a WR 11:20 6 months ago, only to have that beaten in the same month by shockra_tease at 11:13 and then 2 months later by SBDWolf at a time of 11:05. Could we get Sub 11? Anything is possible.

Interesting thing I did while watching the video:
So, every level has a counter at the top of the screen. Since the final dracula fight is usually featured prominently in any run shown, I decided to keep track of the remaining time, just to see who managed the final level the absolute fastest.
The first run featured, during the early era of runs covered, was by the V-man himself, Tom Votava, who killed dracula with a generous 567 left on the clock. This was improved by Retro2dGamer, who finished with 578 remaining. Unfortunately, the third "early era" run by Bablo didn't feature an orb collection, so the next improvement noted was by FunkDoc, finishing that era of runs with an impressive 597.
The Kmac era (ft. a guest appearance from Double Armory) began with a solid 603 finish. Over the course of his uncontested records, this was brought up to bold 614, before Double Armory stepped in. After squeaking by with a 616, Double Armory was mugged in a dark alley by Kmac, who retired after his landmark 618 finish.
The final record came from JC, who may not have come out on top in the 100% category, but his Dracula IL game was immaculate. His 621 orb collection went unmatched for the rest of the video, truly a powerful finish.

I'm really really happy with the run. It was incredibly tough to get, but it is also beatable. The biggest gap is the missed bat crit (3.5 seconds lost). We got the slower 7-1 boost. We also had an unlucky bone in level 5. The cookie fight can also be improved. There are more scroll glitches....
I've watched most of your videos multiple times but just noticed the names of the stops when you explained the frame rule system and I got a good chuckle. It's tiny details like those that often go overlooked that really make your videos special.

I know this is gonna sound like some hipster shit but I found Salt looking for Punch Out videos before he ever started doing this series. It's still surreal to me that a guy I randomly found while going through Punch Out videos ended up making one of my favorite series on UA-cam for the past few years.

I’ve never played a Castlevania game before but here’s what I learned about how to play.
1. Run through the level killing everything.
2. Get holy water.
3. Spam holy water during the boss fight.
4. Win.
I really think Summoning Salt ought to do a side series of shorter videos, just describing the developments in the run since the main video dropped. The current WR has cut almost 40s, so I imagine there's a lot to talk about!
I mean, he did that vid for Mario Kart wii Ultra shortcuts so there's precedent. I suspect his usual longer full history vids probably get better viewing metrics though.
