So many games had weird rules like this early on, often courtesy of Twin Galaxies. I remember they didn't accept using the warp pipes at all for SMB1 100%, so you couldn't go into the pipe in 1-1 for example. So silly.

I can say that Holy Water in Ultimate is much like the one from Castlevania: When hit an enemy, this one is stunned while receiving damage, unable to do any damage to you, making them easy to kill or run away from. He even said that indirectly in 3:45. On a side note, their down-air is much like boosting in those games, in the sense of boucing if you hit an enemy.

I love that you're showcasing and focusing in on the fact that even on these major record-breaking runs, there's all these mistakes and room for obvious further optimizations that make it plain as day the record could drop even further and that someone's going to eventually come and do that, or the record-breaker themselves will refine the run further. It really makes you think about so many current standing records for so many games that have those same things and are waiting to be refined further by passionate players.

Here ya go. Even before frauds like Billy Mitchell and Todd Rodgers made TG into an utter laughingstock, they were already a complete joke prior to that. I cannot even imagine how much damage they did to speedruns and superplays with their arbitrary and laughable rulings.
So many games had weird rules like this early on, often courtesy of Twin Galaxies. I remember they didn't accept using the warp pipes at all for SMB1 100%, so you couldn't go into the pipe in 1-1 for example. So silly.
