I've been experimenting with how to generate more Instagram followers with ads for the past couple of months.
And I've developed a simple and easy to follow Instagram advertising strategy that works really well and can be used to generate thousands of Instagram followers.

Geeeez. I've been bashing my head trying to figure out how to create an ad for my Instagram page without having to boost a post (the worst). Thank you! Though the video is 11 months old, its about 97% accurate, mostly because of updates to the ad amanger layout etc.

I tried this directly on Instagram, which I hated doing because of the limited options... I targeted UK and us and got followers at around 35-40 cents per. I was using an existing image on the feed.
So now since I am now over a thousand followers I will now try your method using that same pic in the stories at lookalike audiences of people that interacted... Will also retarget website visitors and see...
I didn't think fb would do well since you can have the cta to go to profile.... But will try it out.

I have had my Instagram since 2014 and I want to try out this technique but i'm scared that since i used to use it for personal reasons and am now using it for fashion content that the look alike audience would not be accurate since most people following me are friends and family. Thanks Ben, does the swipe up website link bring them to the Instagram app on their phone or on a website browser? Just curious because if it brings them to Instagram on a browser they may not be logged in to their account which may mean they won't follow you. I've been searching this for a while and could not find an answer for it.

Hey Ben! Im trying to implement this exact same thing, however when I choose, Traffic-Link clicks-my instagram URL- The platform throws an error: Ad Creative Does Not Use Valid Link: The link in this ad is either missing or invalid for Link Click Ads optimization. This could be because this ad needs to link external content (e.g., an advertiser's website), but this ad does not (e.g., it links to a Facebook page). Fix this error by making the link valid.

Two questions - (1) Do you cover anywhere when someone gets "Size too small - must have more than 100 in source" - even though the follower counts and engagement numbers for the IG accounts are well over 100 in one country". and (2) You added the countries in both the creation of the audience, and then added them again when you got back to the ad. Can you clarify as to why? Going back to #1 question above, I managed to (oddly) get it to accept my source by removing all but one country (US), and then it cleared the warning. When I get to the ad and am given the option to add countries again, if I then add those other countries (the ones I had to leave out in the first step), does that essentially work around the issue? Or would I have needed those countries IN the source audience AND the ad audience? Or, is that essentially creating an audience that consists of a lookalike in the US, and then a random non-lookalike-everyone-and-their-brother from those countries added in step 2? If you have any advice, would be greatly appreciated, as that's the only place (so far) that I've gotten stuck.
Same for me. My metrics tell me I have over 100 people falling into the category I am making my lookalike from, but the error message I get is that it’s less than 100

Hey Ben- hope you see this. I tried this method today and while it appears I'm getting a lot of link clicks from my desired audience, I can't tell if I'm getting any follows. I'm using my IG profile as the destination URL in my story ads. Is there a way to be sure the clicks are actually being directed to my profile? I would have expected many more follows for the amount of clicks I've been getting, as well as compared to how many follows I get when I boost posts.
Watching in 2024…. and plan on trying this. But no mention of budget? Not sure how much I should spend daily.
Adding a website URL will make the "Learn More" button open your profile page in instagram's internal browser... isn't there a way to just send the person to your profile directly?
I noticed where it says "where would you like to drive traffic" you left it at website and not app. Is that something you missed or don't recommend changing? Thanks
Is there a difference in reach between direct Instagram Ads and ads from fb manager? Seems easier to do it from insta if the focus is getting more followers on insta?
When I test this, if someone clicks my ad either on IG newsfeed or IG story from within the app, it opens on my Instagram Profile in their web browser (Safari or Chrome) instead of the IG app, thus they're not logged in and can't hit follow. How do I get around this?
Use the link from the app not the website
Hey Ben. Just wondering if there is a way to send the user to the in app link? The web URL opens in a browser for the user and they then have to choose open in app, are sent to the app store with the option to open in app. Then they're sent back to the browser in an endless loop. Or am I missing something?
i had this problem - it would always send them to the web version which is useless.
you need to create a deeplink (try URLgenius) so that it automatically opens in the app

When I create an insta story Ad on ad manager and ad my insta url where you put the website. When the people click learn more it takes them to a website of my insta page instead of staying on the actual app. Is there a way to fix this?

I would love an example of someone who's used this strategy with other industries than "How to Make Money". I've yet to find a fitness, relationship or general lifestyle brand that isn't selling about how to make money in their ads or page using this. I believe it can work in different industries however it would be great to have a different example as most people will click a how I make $1,000,000 post
Hey, Ben great video! Quick Question: I'm on day 2 of my campaign and now in the learning limited stage. I have about 26 link clicks and 6500 impressions. Is this normal for a lookalike audience of 2.7MM at $20 a day budget? The audience is US, CAN, UK, AUS so I expect a bit more expensive CPC. Definitely don't want to make adjustments at this point but the learning limited signification always gets me uneasy.

Just one question : as far as I know, using the instagram Link causes any mobile phone to open the profile in the browser instead of just staying in the app. Which makes everyone just quit the whole process without any further interaction. through a browser! that's why for me it's better to start the AD directly from the mobile app, so that you can have the "visit IG profile" call to action and they can land directly on the instagram app :) otherwise you risk that users are not already logged into the IG account and they won't log in just to become followers :) in my opinion, ofc

Denin Varikkassery oh, well, unfortunately from the instagram app you don’t have the lookalike audience.. so I normally target through interests. But if you are sure all your followers are real you can use the “automatic” audience which should work more or less as a lookalike :) I don’t assure you guys you’ll have more followers like this, I’m still experimenting too... but at least I’m sure I’ll have the “Visit Instagram Profile” call to action and I’m sure the user will be sent on my profile ON the app and not on an internal browser :)

When ads are viewed in the app - they'll take people to your profile within the app :)

I used a compilation of my best animations cutting really quick between them with some text above and below. Thanks for sharing!!! I used to spend $0.30-$0.50 per follower so I gave up on paid marketing and stuck to organic. Gave your video a like. Keep up the good work!

You certainly can do - the reach numbers of this sort of campaign tend to be very large so I don't think it will make much different either way.

I am from India. I had been using all the countries I could think of in my saved audience and my oh my was it expensive!!!! I used to get like 8 followers for every 100 rupees that I used which is tooooooo expensive. I had no idea that putting first world countries in my target audience was increasing my expense smh. I am trying out your strategy right now and hopefully everything works and I get more followers :( It will really help my business.

Following this video, where on earth is the 'Quick Creation' option you talk about? Seeing on one or two other video's this should be the top right corner...however it's not there on our screen. Yes you can - 700 is enough. You may want to try and improve other areas of your campaign though.

In that case you'll want to use relevant interest targeting options to start with.
I’ve had a split test of two campaigns one from a facebook ads manager and one from mobile version of Instagram and mobile version campaign performed outstandingly better

I have a question: We only have 260 followers for now and when I try to create ig lookalike audience, it won't work cause it says at least 100 people from the same country and it tried to locate USA and it works but it shows only 1000 people in my target audience no matter how many percentage I choose to target. They only have data of 1 year that's why. If your followers one year ago were 200 and than this year you have 60 than they will only take 60 followers.(English is not my first language still tried to explain it)

Hey Ben! Thanks for this it’s great! When I do try to sample from my profile for a look alike and try to sample other countries it gives an error and says you need 100 samples from that country? Which I’m assuming is 100 followers? Am I doing something wrong?
Error code is; Source is too small please chose a source that includes at least 100 people in the same country (#2654)
Yes so you need 100+ followers from the same country to use the Lookalike. If you don't have that yet then you can target relevant interests until you get there.

Hi Ben! I have a creator account and can’t create a lookalike audience. I started out with using all my interests in 1 adset and decided to split them into 1 each to test them. Unfortunately I have no clue which of the adsets my followers are coming from. What do you advice I do in this case?

In that scenario you'd have to run each ad set in isolation and monitor how that affect follower levels. You just don't have much visibility on tracking with this I'm afraid.
Thanks Ben, how are you determining how many followers you received as I don't believe the Facebook Ads reports show Instagram Follows, only Facebook Page Likes. Do you just see the uplift in following during the time period when the ads ran vs usual number of followers gained?

Honestly not easily. We usually track the total daily and compare that to what was being generated before launching the campaign.

I selected the video of the ads I had run from my Instagram account and I got over 28k reach and over 15k engagement but yet nothing up to 7 reflected on the ig post I picked, no comment, no likes whatsoever. Please what could be the problem. I need help
Hi Ben just created the look alike audience, I tried both 1% and 10% but the audience size is fewer than 1,000 people. Is this normal or will the audience size take sometimes to increase? Thank you in advance, always loved your content.
1% lookalikes are always the size of 1% of the population on Facebook and Instagram in your target area. It sounds to me like you are either targeting a very small area or you have added other detailed targeting criteria at the ad set level. When using lookalikes locally you want to go with a 10%.

Thanks a lot - you'll need to use a bigger source audience. Facebook is telling you that the custom audience you're using to create a lookalike is too small. That isn't related to the target location of the lookalike audience.

@@AestheticGoblin I had the same issue, and it doesn't seem that Ben has shared what exactly needs to be done, so I have removed all the countries and was left with one and it worked, as my audience was too small too when I started adding many of them.

Are you doing so with the right Facebook Pixel? They could be too small if not.

You can look at clicks and that will be an indicator but won't provide concrete data.
I noticed you kept ads optimized for link clicks but get charged per impression. Do you think you can optimize spend by getting charged when link clicked instead?
Hi Stacy, changing how you get charged makes no difference to your results. It just changes how your invoice is presented. Facebook does everything per impression. If you choose to be charged by click then they just convert the data into that metric.
