    Being the proud owner of a 5711 with blue dial (miraculously acquired at retail at the AD more or less across the street from my house), I can say that it is 100% worth it. There is nothing like the feel of the bracelet on the wrist and the look of the dial as it catches the light in different ways. However, I would never pay a grey market price for it. That is definitely not worth it.

    • @firstname2072
      @firstname2072 5 років тому +3

      Of course it's not worth it. Have you had a replica on beside a real one? There is little difference. Certainly not enough difference to justify the price difference. However it does feel special to wear it but that's only because you know how much you paid for it.... Vein consumerism at its best

    • @firstname2072
      @firstname2072 5 років тому +1

      @Arkadi Danielyan Well not really because that's not what I said at all is it? Anything is worth its value as long as you can see where the money went. For example a range rover sport is worth the same as this. The range rover has a lot of metal in it, top of the range technology, leather seats, impressive engineering. You get a lot of bang for your buck. This is a small stainless steel watch..... Not worth 50k. Have you had one on? It's nice but fail to see why you'd spend so much money on a mass produced stainless steel watch.......
      Now like I actually said in my post if you would read it again is I cannot see where the extra 49800 $ goes into getting the real deal v replica. If a replica can be built to nearly exacting standards (bar the movement obv) then I shudder to think how much PP make per watch. If you have worn a A. Lange & sohne you can see where the money goes as they are made in limited quatities and generally out of precious metals etc.

    Had the 5711, bought at an AD. Wore it for three years. Then I stopped and it sat in my watchbox. With the recent increase in value, and after soul searching I sold it.
    No point in having a safe queen.

    The reason these watches are expensive is pretty simple; everyone wants one, Patek won't step up production to meet demand, and the only way to circumvent the multi-year waiting list is to buy one on the secondary market. Now, who has the money to just throw away to get what they want when they want it? Millionaire's and Billionaire's who won't think twice about overpaying if it means they get to show off their cool 'new' watch to all their friends. This is very much the same thing that has been happening with classic sports cars; the rich flooding the market, bidding against one another and causing the prices to skyrocket to the point where the idea of an average person being able to afford one is a pipe dream. The only difference in this case, is that it's all artificial. A 1955 Mercedes 300 SLR that won the Mille Miglia is truly one of a kind... but a steel sports watch that Patek could mass produce if they really wanted to? Quite the scam if you ask me. I'll just buy a $300 Chinese knockoff which is surprisingly passable to the non-watch enthusiast; and it will get me just as laid as a real one. :)

    The story I have heard was Genta was inspired by the "porthole of a ship" - specifically, transatlantic ocean-liners. Never heard "submarine" before this video.
    The Nautilus' "older brother", the Royal Oak, was designed by Genta a few years earlier. Inspiration for that design was allegedly an old diver helmet -- hence the octagonal shape and pronounced screws around the bezel.
    One of my favorite parts of the back story to this watch (that was not mentioned in this video) was the time it took Genta to come up with the Nautilus. Story goes (from his own account) that the design only took him a few minutes to sketch out. Obviously there was a lot of work to be done once it became a real project with Patek, but the soul of the watch and core characteristics were done in just a few minutes. I'd like to believe that story, mainly because when I look at the watch I do see a very organic, simplistic design that can easily be described as the natural reaction and idea of a true artist.
    The core design of the Royal Oak by Genta has a similar backstory regarding timing. Genta apparently sketched out the watch in one night on the eve of Basel 1971. Genta himself later called the Royal Oak the masterpiece of his career.
    I own a 15400 ST for the history of the Royal Oak, what it did to the "luxury" watch industry during a period of uncertainty, and a celebration of Genta design. I would have preferred to pony up for a jumbo 15202, but unfortunately that was not possible as a 1st time AP customer in the current market environment. For a time/date only piece, I think it has an edge over the 5711/1A if I had to pick one. That being said, I am currently waiting for a 5712/1A. I think the 5712 and the 15400 can play nicely together in a collection. I have always liked the '12 over the '11 because it gives you a taste of the complication that Patek does so masterfully well in such a thin case design. I also think the "controlled chaos" of it's asymmetric dial is truly unique and hard to find elsewhere.

      You are 100% right that it is a "porthole of a ship" and not submarine for the inspiration. Subs don't have portholes or any type of windows, haha.
      It's basically Instagram driving some watches to silly prices right now. There are many pieces I own or have owned including the Hulk, Pepsi 16750, AP 15300 , AP Diver, DateJust's etc. where I paid less than retail. The only brands that are trading above retail are Rolex, PP and AP. It's funny to see that brands that are just as prestigious and comparable in terms of finishing and history can be had at deep discounts such as A Lange, JLC and Vacheron. I'll be looking for deals with those manufacture's as well as vintage Rolex pieces till the hype dies down. Recently picked up an OysterQuartz which has < 25000 pieces ever made.That is true hype right there that the Instagram crowd doesn't know about yet. In this watch game you need to zig when others zag and vice versa.

      @jh7344 5 років тому

      "Nautilus" as a name when it comes to vessels almost exclusively refers to submarines. The most famous one being from the Jules Verne novel. In the book the salons porthole is described as -oval-, and from what I've heard that was exactly the inspiration to the watch. Makes the most sense since real subs don't need portholes, and why name it after a sub if the inspiration was a normal ship?

  • @SpydieFan

    I remember about 7 years ago, I was in the market for a high end steel sports watch, deciding between the AP Royal Oak 15300, 15202 and the Patek 5711. The Patek was offered at $18k preowned. Decided to get the 15300 used for $9k, side by side the AP seemed like a better and more luxurious watch. The 15202 was about $15k at the time and I liked having a more modern movement with screw down crown and a second hand.
    Certainly the 5711 would have been a better investment, but it’s not a better watch. The 5711 at retail is pretty egregiously overpriced considering what else you can get from Patek in their non sports line for similar money.
    Right now you can get at least on the secondary market a precious metal Perpetual Calendar from Patek for the same money as 5711, you have a pretty bad case of the Instagram envy or whatever social disorder to spend $50k on a steel Nautilus

    The PP Nautilus is worth that amount because the collectors say it is. From just a materials point of view, no watch is worth more than a couple of grand. Unless you decorate it with gems and such. Patek has carefully nurtured their image and truthfully their history is amazing and at the end of the day, you are paying for their image and reputation.

    It all comes down to "looks." The Aquanaut is rather ugly where the Nautilus is unusually well proportioned. The dial of the Aquanaut is especially ill conceived. Gerald Genta designed the Nautilus, one of his finest designs. Some hack at Patek designed the Aquanaut as a derivation of the Nautilus. The quality of the designs makes all the difference.

    What puts me off both the Royal Oak and the Nautilus is their gimmicky backstory, and what their success says about luxury watches in general. They have no sporting appeal to me because they were made for no other purpose whatsoever than to be luxurious. Their claim to fame is a marketing and rebranding success, which is not what one might call cool.
    To an extent this is true for any watch company which survived the quartz crisis. Fact of the matter is that watches are no longer a utility. However the Nautilus is arguably taking this fact, which isn't something it would seem the watch industry or the customers are all that comfortable with given that people are still mostly out to buy Divers and Racing chronos, and just rubs in everyones faces just because.
    How are real sportswatches any different? If you go far back enough into the Rolex submariners backstory you find diving. If you go back into the Cartier Santos history you'll find Zeppelin aviation. If you look at the Speedmasters history you'll find the moonlanding. You know, real bad a** stuff. When you strap one of these on you can pretend you have some sort of connection with all that. In fact wearing these watches may be more of a celebration of the fact that people went to the moon and flew zeppelins than anything else.
    If you look at the Royal Oak and Nautilus history you'll find arguably AP and then PP daring you, double-daring you motherf***er, to spend more money on a steel watch than on a gold watch, not in spite of the redundancy of mechanical watches, but rather because of the redundancy of mechanical watches. That's some emperors new clothes type of s***, if the emperor was told in advance what was going happen, wasn't given any clothes and proceeded to go out buck naked anyway on purpose.
    There's a common stereotype of luxury watch buyers that they're all just rich a**holes flaunting their wealth on frivolous stuff. When I think of the Sea-Dwellers history I can say "They wrong! These items are meaningful celebrations of mankinds accomplishments!" When I look at the Nautilus I think "S***, they're absolutely right. OMG. Why do I spend money on these things?"

      @@sircopperfield7420 You could say same thing about any watch, including a yuuuge gold-plated Invicta. There obviously is no objective right or wrong in choosing a watch to wear. Nevertheless I think these watches are lame, historical importance and build quality be damned.

      To me, the nautilus and royal oak show that you are a real watch aficionado. It proves that you do not care about gold value, or precious shiny diamonds, but instead give more attention to the movement inside your watch, the craftsmanship of your product, and a sturdy steel case that will protect the movement better than the brittle gold/platinum. I have to admit that due to the popularity of them, this has effect has leveled down a bit, but the same could be said about the solid gold submariner.
      In fact, most people do not even understand the resistance of divers. My dad is scared of swimming with my seiko frankenmonster, which is literally the definition of a divers watch. This is because the glamour of nice timepieces (Rolex, ap, pp, jlc, Lange, etc) has made him assume that any well made watch is brittle. Which is not the case.
      Even though you have a point, I will always have the royal oak (in specific) as a grail, as the level of craftsmanship that is given to a regular everyday diver is unreachable by others. And even though I love other watches with more heritage, like the Calatrava, I would be God scared to wear them anywhere while a royal oak could be my daily!

    • @qwertpoiuy430
      @qwertpoiuy430 5 років тому

      @Dundlele Bundy you might say so, but gold is also far softer than steel, even when presented with alloys, I would bet my life that steel will last longer and resist more. In specific with keeping corrosion out of my watch, as the softness of gold could potentially let water in from places like the crown. And while I must admit that Patek's case finishing is not top tier, (also I don't see GS as a common watch, they are beautiful!) I was referring to the level of decoration in the movement. If you look for nice case finishing, it's instant competitor, the Royal oak is a better candidate. And lastly, gold is heavier that steel, so having it made out of steel will just make it easier for the piece to wear everyday

    Much of the price inflation is definitely fueled by hype and not much else. That said, it doesn’t mean it’s in a bubble. Some of the stuff that’s gotten popular lately, especially vintage Rolex and Omega is also inflated by hype but I don’t see those bubbles bursting anytime soon either. There’s just something about those watches that makes their demand higher than their intrinsic worth and, unless there’s some big scandal, I think that will continue for a long time.
    As for me I’ll just stick with my Seiko SARB033.

    The answer your question. None of these luxury watches are worth what they're being marketed. A Stainless Steel watch selling for 55-70k is a pure scam. It is the law of supply and demand, that's it. How do you justify a watch that isn't even made from precious metal and selling it higher than Daytona or Gold watch? How does a SS watch worth more than White Gold Daytona. Look at the 5711. It's plain jane... what a scam.

    If you are rich and want a sports watch but think Rolex and Panerai are too plebian and commonplace, then Nautilus is the watch for you. But yeah, it is not an especially handsome watch at a glance (though, upon inspection, Patek's quality and finish make themselves obvious)--and the fact that you can have two Rolexes for the same price--or a white gold Lange 1815 Up/Down--or a stainless steel JLC Perpetual Calendar--means that it is a smart purchase only for two groups of people: those who wear only one watch and want it to be a Patek, and those who already have a dozen luxury watches and want to add another one.

    I follow the Ferrari market and it’s the predecessor of what you describe here. No apparent reason why certain models skyrocket, though with Ferrari #s made really matter. I personally wouldn’t touch a PP Nautilus (and I love the brand). They aren’t limited production and will come down to earth. My advice, if you truly love the design - 1st look at the Old school Royal Oak cuz the PP is really a branded homage piece in my opinion (sorry the truth hurts). Too bad Genta couldn’t come up with another brilliant design. The porthole is a winner

Yes, I paid the aftermarket prices on both. It is a desirable watch, and I get that we are in a bubble, I really wanted these. I do wear them and while most people have no idea about watches or Patek, each brings me personal joy. Watches are my passion and owning them are primarily for me as opposed to others. We live in sad times, considering Patek's most notable watch is one that was made in the last 50 years of its multi hundred year life... Most of its notoriety coming by the mere fact that genta designed it and along with the Aqua act as an entry point into Haute Horology ... I was hoping you'd say, if I only had one watch it would be a 5270 Salmon, 5004, 2499 or even a 5320 ... not a Naut.
