These replicas are getting too close for comfort. As a watchmaker l have found only one simple way to spot a fake Patek or Rolex. Ok you need to open the watch.... so maybe its not so simple. The balance wheel is regulated by small weights on the balance wheel. It's called a free sprung balance wheel and is very difficult to make and adjust. Most balance wheels are simply adjusted by changing the length of the spring using an extra arm that pinches the spring. All fakes use this method!! @@djordje4304 This type of balance regulating ineeds very high quality and specialist manufacturing plus it needs to be adjusted by hand by a watch maker which takes time, say minimum 30 minutes per watch. @@duprie37 this assumes all luxury watch makers are being honest and pricing their watches according to the material value they provide. I know you're not that blue-eyed. The fake exists because the original does, with all its history and handcrafting, because the manufactures invented and never stopped researching mechanical intricacies and designers broke molds and innovated. @@optimusprime1634 Of course it doesn't cost $60K to build as then the company would make no profit selling them. But an average Patek watchmaker makes about $100k/year with benefits and makes about 100 watches. So that's ~$10k watch for the manufacturing work. And I don't actually think a watchmaker can make 100 of these $60k model per year because of their complexities. Then of course they need to pay for sales, marketing, logistics, materials, real estate, and research and development of new stuff Patek is a high margin business but also high cost. In China however the "watchmaker" probably gets paid a few hundred bucks per month and the watch making is mostly automated and they spend $0 for development. So $60k for a watch is a crazy price but it really costs Patek more than $10k on average to make that watch. The company gross profit margin is somewhere around 40-50%... the same as Apple.
I was going to start a proper collection of my own but a couple friends had the same Omega seamaster chronos - one fake and the other real. Put it this way - the look on the face of the real owner was enough. Apart from the fake being less than 1mm thicker we could not really tell the difference - even under the microscope. You’d only ever be ‘found out’ if you bumped into someone with a real one and a super magnifier. But worse - the real owner then sold his £7k watch and bought several replicas so now has a collection of high end watches which he can wear without fear of damaging etc. whereas he previously only wore his real omega to ‘nice places’ and had an everyday Seiko Prospex. But it was his face. Honestly - the colour drained before my eyes. He’s not looked back and tells me he feels even more smug now than he did with an authentic watch.
So If I have a Ferrari, I can buy a fake and people are gonna be convinced? I think that the main focus is that no one is gonna give about your watch. Maybe 1% of the population and 0.5% can distinguish a fake from an authentic, especially if this good. So you should buy and use a watch if it pleasures you, if a 500€ fake Patek is your thing, go for it, if it's a 500€ Junghans, that's probably better. If it's a 60k Patek, well enjoy it. Hahaha!
Especially when the watch is ugly like that
This watch is made for rich people and the brand is very niche at rich people. The replica is if you want to fool your rich friend since it isn’t even widely know to the general public like Rolex. A Patek Philipe for 60k is cheap if you consider that they made models that cost around 200k

@John Doe There are some Pateks that are affordable, vintage ones, I would go that route if I wanted a legit Patek, or just buy a fake on too if I wanted a nautilus
One of the left is real. I bought a fake Tag Heuer in Thailand for around $30 and the quality is crazy good. My mom, as I was living overseas and left the watch in US, took it to a jewelry shop to get a new battery and the lady who helped her at one of the oldest jewelers in town asked, "Honey, do you have insurance for this watch, it's really expensive?" 🤣🤣🤣
She was just trying to sell you insurance. Dealers won’t tell you if you have a fake if they can sell you something.
Is there even any quartz Tag expensive enough to need an insurance?
@@svdragunov I don't know, probably wanted to sell the insurance, but the point was...just goes to show how good that fake is made.
Conclusion: almost same watch can be made for 600€ and they are making profit for selling a watch at this price. Patek and rolex are really overcharging us by a huge margin.
Not really. If you see the amount of work and the quality of the materials that go into a real luxury watch, you'll understand why the best watches are also ridiculously expensive. A fake watch maker doesn't have to spend anything on design and R&Dfor example.
@@duprie37 this assumes all luxury watch makers are being honest and pricing their watches according to the material value they provide. I know you're not that blue-eyed. If Patek sells a watch for 100k it doesn't mean they invested almost 100k in materials and finishing. It just means someone is willing to pay it.

Facts, as Nico Leonard said, I could say this is the retail price but it's not what the watch is actually worth.
Without the Patek and Rolex, what would the fake designers base their design off and sell knock-offs? why don't they just make their own brand? Name matters a lot.
Brand name matters a lot. But the biggest thing the fakes cannot replicate is heritage and servicibility. You buy a Patek for yourself, your child and even your grandchildren. Patek promises (and keeps its promise) to provide servicing for your timepiece indefinitely. No replica can do that.

If the differences between a 60.000 and a 500 euro watch are only somewhat noticeable under a microscope, it really makes you wonder about how much finishing and craftmanship matter to collectors and enthusiasts as they purport and how much the "big dick" and "look at me peasant" factors really come into watch pricing after all
Nicely said Matt! Totally agree with you.
The fake exists because the original does, with all its history and handcrafting, because the manufactures invented and never stopped researching mechanical intricacies and designers broke molds and innovated. Uncultured new money certainly gravitates towards status symbols, but collectors and enthusiasts are passionate about the craftsmanship and history and would much rather have an iconic Swatch or a Casio than an imitation high end watch.
@@mesteme I think that the point being made simply was that these watches, considering what they offer, are grossly overpriced. You are buying into the heritage and the brand more than the actual physical goods you get... After all, a $500 fake looks almost as good as the original, so I'd wager you'd be able to get a nigh-undistinguishable fake for $1000 or less. The other $49,000 you're paying is for the brand, or whatever abstract idea it is that they're selling to you.
@@RM-el3gw Except you're not just paying for the brand. The Nautilus wouldn't have been the Nautilus if it hadn't been for decades of research, mistakes, know-how, r&d, trials and error. It is silly to compare the bare production price of the two. No one would have made the imitation if the Nautilus hadn't been desirable, the Nautilus would not have been desireable if PP hadn't made it and to get to make it it requires incalculable resources over decades of both engineering from Patek and artistic talent and culture from Gerald Genta.
@@mesteme nah.. they're still over priced. They only got cloned because the demand is high but no one is willing to spend that much on a watch. Tons of stuff had a lot of r&d like in the tech industry. The only difference I can see are these watches are hand made. But seeing as the replicas are also hand made yet it cost just 1% of the real one is something to think about.
Going back in the 60s and 70s, watched like Rolex costs a fraction of what they are today even if you factor in inflation. Sure the watches had some improvement in built quality but that doesn't justify the price at all. It just go rebranded as a luxury product over the decades.

Brand name is one hell of a price
You're absolutely wrong, if you factor in the building, equipment, and work-time expenses for a swiss company, with $1000 you can't even make the clasp
@@gfilippou Have you ever seen videos where fake vs real are compared? There are some really good fakes that even the experts say on certain aspects look better made etc than the real deal. Fact is, just like anything, you're buying the hype and the name for the most part. Do you really think it costs $60K to make a patek? unless its laden with diamonds or a Richard Mille that costs $400k?
@@gfilippou maybe $10, and only if clasp is very expensive to build.....
Cant stopping laughing looking at the comments section - thanks Elle for getting the conversation going.
Hopefully this video should give the cloners better info to improve the replicas ;)

I do watch repair and this is the first time I’ve heard someone else take about the metal grain to spot a fake . I’ve always use that method and the weight method. High end watch companies use high grade stainless steel or solid gold and have a very distinct weight it’s not about being heavy or light it’s just the right weight or not . You can use the weight / feel method on any item from purses , game controllers to construction tools we’ve all picked up something cheap and something high end and you can immediately feel the difference.
Yes, my fake Rolex feels lighter than the real version, but also owning a real one, the fake is a more accurate timekeeper, cost only £200 (Real £4000 +) and if muged I'd feel a lot less annoyed handing it to the arsehole behind the weapon. He would have to get it apprised to know it wasn't pukka ; and if he sold it to another theiving twat, (as real,) he would mayby be looking for new knee caps later. Also the night "Lume" on the fake is pathetic! I'll continue to use my real one at home - and my fake - on holiday.
That’s impressive. You can see the difference if you investigate closely side by side but the reality of that happening in real life is pretty slim. Also demonstrates the brand markup on the genuine product, the finesse of the real deals quality details doesn’t quantify x100+ pricing.
