@IDGuy - thanks for the great video man, really appreciate you taking the time to create a video of my chosen topic. This topic is of interest to me as

I believe Patek, AP and Vacheron to be the trilogy worth considering and comparing. The Daytona being a chrono also makes it a different animal all together.

Very true. I made this video at the request of a viewer who had the option of choosing these three pieces. In future I'll be making a series around a variety of other watches that fall into the same categories (Like the Calatrava, Patrimony, Classique and the Master Grande Ultra Thin). Thanks for the comment, Marcus!

I am a huge Daytona fanboy. If there were such a thing as a day date Daytona I would camp outside the store and sell my body to get one.
That said. Thank you for pointing out the subdials no longer being centered with the 3 and 9 hour markers. I had never noticed. Now it’s all I can notice! My rose colored glasses are broken:(

I've loved the Nautilus design since the mid 80s, long before I knew who Gerald Genta was, and before I knew that Genta designed the Omega Constellation, Royal Oak, IWC ingeniuer, Hublot and VC styles, etc. The Nautilus is my favourite out of all the Genta designs.

  • @BobDyl

Excellent video, as usual. If by one watch, we're talking about the most iconic design, it's for sure the 5711. But if by one watch, you mean a watch you can wear and use every day and under any circumstances without worrying about damage, it has to be the Daytona (I've owned the 5711, the Daytona, and an AP chrono which is close to the jumbo). My reasons:
    1. 5mm easy link extension in the Daytona clasp is essential. The 5711 clasp is bottom line awful. AP has a better clasp but no extension.
    2. The Daytona ceramic bezel is scratch proof and looks *like new* forever. The 5711 bezel is delicate beyond belief and looks awful once it's scratched up. Trust me, given its current value, you won't be using the 5711 in the garage unless you are a Russian billionaire who loves to work in the garage. Same goes for the AP - beautiful when new but ... gaaad it's awful when bashed up.
    3. Ease and cost of service. Patek literally takes months and costs thousands to service in either NY or Switzerland. AP has a NJ service center but also takes months and costs thousands. The Daytona, weeks and perhaps $1K at any RSC.

Excellent points, Reptilicus...thanks for sharing those. As a Daytona Ceramic owner myself, I especially liked your justifications for the Daytona. lol I hate watches that scratch easily (too much polished areas that get bumped easily). I have a Cartier Santos that I LOVE, but it has a polished metal bezel surface which looks beautiful but drives me nuts. I unfortunately, am one of those guys that likes my watch to stay pristine looking. It's a tough battle with highly polished watches.

Wow this is a fantastic piece of analysis!
I happen to have the 41mm APRO, the moonphase Nautilus 5712 and this 116500. Every point you mentioned is right on the spot. I particularly like the part about the 5711 being too simple to be a "one watch" and it needs to have elements to draw you back in. I also dislike how the date window intrudes the dial.
Another thing I used to dislike about the daytona is the lack of a date window, which was why I sold a previous piece a decade ago. These days I don't even set the date.
As for the APRO, I find it rather uncomfortable to wear, but the bracelet is a marvellous piece of engineering.
I don't have a "one piece" out of the three, but it depends very much on the occasion. The nautilus for special functions/events, the Daytona for very casual days, and the APRO for anything in-between.

Although I agree with your assessment almost entirely i must add that if the three the only one I've seen in the wild was the Royal Oak (two tone no less) and I was amazed at how subtle and elegant it was. I was in my chiropractor's waiting room when I glance at the wrist of the gentleman next to me and thought "what a beautiful and interestingly unique watch". I said "excuse me, but you have a really lovely watch there, what is it"? "AP" he replied nonchalantly. We then had a nice discussion about being a WIS and he asked about my collection (though I was wearing a 5610 Casio).
As I left I couldn't help but think "man, that guy just oozed class! "

With PP you have the Calatrava and the Nautilus two trick pony. With the AP Royal Oak a one trick pony. Rolex has the Day Date, Date Just, Explores, Submariner, GMT, Daytona, Yacht Master, all icons. Rolex being considered lower class because they are not completely hand made. I would choose Rolex every time because they seem to have more thoroughbreds in the stable and l don't like the odd designs of the others. Cheers

Very professional assessment from a designer’s viewpoint. Full marks and the smooth and comforting voice over is a bonus as usual. However I would opine that the question could be different and would yield different conclusions. For example, which would you choose if you’re a 30 something vs a middle aged man. And if you’re attending a cocktails party of high society, which would you wear? Or if you go to a gathering of good old pals which one? Etc.

The perfect one watch is the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 4500V. Part of the “Big three” or “Trinity” and you get 3 straps to suit the occasion. Finishing quality is simply outstanding. Maybe because you can buy the VC straight from the boutique and not having to get on a painful waiting list, it wasn’t compared here? In that case, waiting lists are highly overrated.

Thanks for making this great video. It’s very enjoyable to watch. I think to really find out which that “one watch” is, you should own all these three watches and wear them regularly. You will find which one is the one you really like. For me, I have owned a black sub for 3 years and I recently got the SS Daytona. It feels great to have the Daytona on the wrist everyday since I got it. After a month or so, I decided to wear the sub again. Surprisingly I found the sub is so beautiful, it’s super easy to read, elegant and very strong. I could wear it for all the occasions and not worry about any scratches or dint. I don’t think I have all these feelings for the Daytona, probably not for the other two neither. Now I know the black SS sub is that “one watch” for me. Yes, all those rare watches will make us look good but that “one watch” is the one we truly need as an everyday watch.

As much as i like the Royal Oak, the Daytona has to be the most ideal one watch to have among the 3! Robust movement, easily serviced and superbly versatile give Daytona an edge over the nautilus and royal oak. If design is put in place, royal oak would take the spot! The nautilus is the weakest among the 3. The movement finishing isn't really that great for the price point, the movement is not the most durable and the design is not the best looking. I just feel that none of Patek's offering is worth what they are charging for. However, this is just my opinion.

  • @mrg1911

I have a high degree of regard for the the AP, and PP.....but would prefer the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Simple Date over those two.
I also don’t care enough for Gerald Genital’s designs to shell out my own cash to own them.
The Daytona has too many knobs competing with the one wearing it, but of the three, I’d go Daytona because of Rolex’s robust reliability.
    ONE watch? Rolex Explorer.....
I have been considering a white gold Day Date 40.......but no real need other than I’d like to own it.
    Thanks...

I never relaised how much the white date on the Nautilus irks me, till you mentioned it. I do believe its an awesome watch, But for me the 10k gap between the AP and Patek is a no no for me.

The Nautilus or more precisely, an Aquanaut for me.
The Daytona's small size, illegibility and irrelevant complication (for me) renders it third place. I owned one and quickly exchanged it for a blue dial Sky Dweller, which is much more of a pleasant to look at watch, who's complication will never become obsolete or boring like a chronograph.
The Royal Oak like the VC Overseas, which should have been included in the video and is conspicuous by its absence from the final trio, just contains far too much stainless steel.
Both look like throw backs from a previous age that I don't much care for. Large statement watches for people with either too large or too small egos.
I love the dial configuration, indecises, hands et cetera but I always come back to the amount of silver on show (primarily on the chainmail-like bracelet) and never get beyond that.
I find it rather bizarre how the amount of Gold on a watch is frowned upon in many watch circles and yet, these 80s silver stainless steel relics still seem to pass muster. Bizarre!

  • @barbelljoe

Royal Oak or Rolex BLNR for me. I should point out, though, that the Nautilus can come with a chronograph or moon phase complication, which elevates it above the Daytona.

Initially I was really into the RO, however over time the Nautilus won my heart over.
It's just that little bit more refined and classes than the RO imo. Not even to mention the perfect size and how the bracelet wraps around and wrist size.

To me the seconds hands of a watch is its pulse, it's how I receive a visual key and affirmation that the watch is alive and well. I see no merits of not having it. As a designer myself, I'm also disappointed why the date is so often put at the 3 o'clock position. I would consider placing it above the 6 o' clock position as it would bring stability to the layout in my humble opinion, or between 4 and 5 o clock. I'm surprised how removing the 3 o'clock line has become the norm, perhaps its due to technical reasons of the positioning of complication that favors this placement.

  • @damachine3

I own them all and it's a tough call. Probably between my Nautilus and my steel ceramic white dial Daytona, but my particular Nautilus is the only steel version with the alligator strap. I would rather have a steel bracelet for a one watch collection, so the nod goes to my Daytona.

The Royal Oak takes the biscuit for me, the Nautilus a very close 2nd, the latest Daytona chrono looks overstuffed and strangely misaligned. Ever since the lob sided chrono dials at 3 and 9 came into view it comes a deserved but distant 9th place in my watch league fantasy game.

  • @jamesrobert4106

Genta rendered a perfect design with the Royal Oak. The Nautilus he designed for women, and it is visible as such. The Daytona...Economics and availability aside, I would always prefer the Zenith El Primero.

This comparison misses the one watch that kills all these: The Vacheron Constantin Overseas 2000V. I bought one when I first started collecting, then 2 ceramic Daytonas, the Nautilus, and 3 15202s. The VC is a notch above them except the RO, and removes the author's distaste for its industrial aspect. It's as sublime as the RO but softer and dressier, more elegant. It's prettier than the odd Nautilus, a runner up to Genta's masterpiece. Unlike the author, I don't see Genta as having an advantage designing that watch, I see a great disadvantage to better his original with another hit without it being a blatant copy. The Nautilus suffers from so-so bracelet finishing, it just doesn't feel expensive on the wrist, and lacks the precise beveling of the RO. The dial is also an odd shape, which the too-wide bezel highlights. The 3800 or 7118 midsize is a bit better in this regard. Regardless, the 2000V has the dressy side of the Nautilus, but not quite the sport, a Maltese cross motif brings to mind no waterports. It is also considerably thinner than the RO or PP, a true ultra-thin. The Daytona should not have been part of this comparison, great watch though it is.
