I have the tiny pests in every Leca self watering pot too. If they ever over populate its not an issue because when you normally flush your potted orchids for maintenance no matter what medium you are using, you will also reduce the springtail population down to very little numbers and the colony cycle will just restart itself. I flush every 2-3 months.
Those are a type of springtails, I have them in some of my pots as well. I actually got them from a bag of Orchiata Kiwi bark and they spread to some of my other pots. So far no issues with any of the plants with springtails in their pot, if you absolutely must get rid of them just let the pot go really dry for a long time and they will die off. I leave them because they do well in cleaning up dying algae in my pots.
I was wondering about those bugs. I found them in the bark of a queen anthurium and panicked . The dont jump , they crawl and move along when I disturb the potting media. They are a little bit shiny . What is their exact name?
I had root mealybugs after using rainwater to water my orchid. They nearly killed my orchid but I reported it and washed the roots free of the silly creatures. After about a year of rest, she bloomed and she’s happier than ever.
You can only ID springtails under a microscope (there's something called a furcula that they use to jump), but they're harmless like you said. P.S. Springtails are in the Class Insecta and mites are in the Class Arachnida
I have one in a clear plastic pot and I love it since I can see the roots. It is my best one although it has not given me a flower. It was the top of another that just grew up with leaves. I use your "tiered" method and spaghamoss.
I found a lot of very TINY clear/translucent/whiteish bugs on my orchid near bottom and all over the bark. Should I be worried? I THINK they are springtails
Hey Danny! Thank you so much for all your videos! I’m a total fan! I have a problem though, I have 15 phalaenopsis and some sort of pest is eating up my new roots. I repotted all of them, sprayed everything with peroxide, have used alcohol, soaps, and I’m growing a bid desperate... one of them is showing crazy signs of dehydration although it has roots and it’s being watered consistently ( I even put it water culture for a bit between repotting and nothing changed) and an other has bad yellow patches and lost a bunch of newer leaves. On top of all this I brought my all time favourite one to the sink to water and although it had green and beautiful leaves + a green flower spike, both leaves dropped as soon as I moved it and it just died right there. As I was repotting them I’ve found signs of spider mites and there was some sort of big (half a centimetre) fast running bug in a lot of the old pots. What do I do!? Should I keep them out of their pots so I can keep a close eye on the root system? Should I do a semi water culture? I’m sorry for the super long horror story but I’m desperate and really need help to save these poor plants! Thank you for even reading this! Keep up the good work!
1:55 I came here because I noticed tiny white dots moving on the bark of my orchids and I was freaking out!!!!! Good thing I found this video!! I was worried because I have 17 orchids, 1 of them with sentimental value because my mom gave it to me for my birthday in 2019 and I didn’t want anything to happen to that plant😟
Welp, I just repotted/potted up my phalaenopsis orchid (before watching this video 😫😔) because it had bugs, moldy media and the roots had been damaged from a spike placed by the nursery. All the roots around the damage turned dark black around where the stake was. I also repotted it because it had bark chips but moss around the core with a "wick" in the middle. It made it so the plant never really dried. I fertilized it after repotting. 😫 I really hope I didn't kill it. :'(
Super happy to find you! I have killed every orchid I ever had. I got one last year that was not doing well. Apparently because I know nothing about orchids!!! The small leaf started to grow suddenly so I'm going to try to save it! Thank you for all the information. I do have a question. I have a few small holes in my leaves. Otherwise the leaves look healthy...the roots not so much but I think they are salvagable. I had some mites or something on my other plants so I spayed everything with neem oil. They seem to be gone and I don't see anything on any of my plants. Could these small holes be from that??
Hi Danni I love your videos and a lot of what you have said has worked with my orchids.. I have one question for phals only, under grow lights. Do you have your grow lights on 24/7 or for a certain time. The lights I have, have quite a few settings but time wise I have 4, 8, or 12 hours and if I wish all the time. Which would you think or know would be the best or would you recommend, thank you wishing you all the best xx
Hi, I have them on for 12 hours all year round, not a good idea to have them on all the time! Respiration is regulated by the night / day cycle. 12 h is very similar to the areas they naturally grow in ☺️
No, I've seen in videos that "eyes" are assessed when a sick orchid is being repotted. The presence of an eye seems to be a positive factor that a sick orchid might survive. I just don't know what to look for. I'm a new orchid hobbyist. I only have phals, dendrobium phals, cattleyas, oncidiums, and tolumnia. Are "eyes" present in any of these type of orchids? I've not had any issues with insects or diseases, just poor root growth found in some during repotting after purchase. Are eyes an important factor with orchid survival secondary go a poor root system?
Ok I think I can make a video on it, great suggestion! Until then though, I think you refer to sympodial orchids which grow a new structure each year, I think this video goes a bit into the subject ua-cam.com/video/hnXC-4NA3s4/v-deo.html
I noticed tiny black bugs in my bark , what are they and are they damaging? I have to look at them through a magnifying glass that’s how tiny they are. I sprayed the pit and top of bark with rubbing alcohol. Any thoughts on this? Thankyou
Hi Danny! I just recently got my first cattleya, the Iwanagara Apple Blossom. I'm a big fan of fragrant orchids and was wondering if you knew of any cattleyas or other orchids that smell just like roses? Many thanks!
Finally I'm jumped into advance levels purchased the rarest lowii 2 inch seedling with preety kinda poor root system for 15 euros or 1200 rupees expensive but I joined the advance club and now searching for sideria japonica badly and new super stuffs.
Okay i have a really weird orchid question and would really love if you could help me. I rescued an incredibly sad odontocidium tiger barb a while ago. The two bulbs it had were leafless and incredibly dehydrated and it had mealybugs. Now i have a nice healthy new bulb forming but the weird part is that its flowering - BUT, theres no spike. Like, theres a flower growing between the leaves. It cant open because its so far down. Ive never seen this before. Any ideas?
Hello I have a Phalaenopsis .. I’ve notice gnats flying around does this mean something? She looks healthy, she is currently growing a new stem and has new bulbs..
Hello Danny! I dont know if that happens to you...i have some cattleyas in LECA as u! But some of the new roots stop growing with a black spot when touch LECA...what can i do? I don’t see salt build up...dont know what happens :( Ty for answering!
Hi, think it is salt but you cannot see with the naked eye. It happens to me too sometimes, it's my cue to flush the pots. With leca salts tend to rise at the top, rather than get trapped inside the pot.
Hi, maybe it will, maybe not, breathing is not impaired if sprayed properly, if you are in the camp with 'stomatal absorbence'. I have a very different perspective on proper foliar feeding and I don't foliar feed, hence I don't really mind the oil, nor do the orchids. I think the answer is a debate, so I'm just going to say that if foliar feeding is something you care about, then don't use this recipe. Or read on horticultural mineral oils, as my recipe is basically that, but diy'd. Maybe you'll find more info from manufacturers :) good luck!
Heya, just a couple of things. 1, I sent an email, but no response, is the email still valid? 2, I've found tiny black insects almost like a Cross between silverfish and earwig, but about the size of an eyelash on my phal flowers. I can't find anything in orchid pests online. Any ideas/advice? Thanks!
For the question about the drying flower spikes.... I go with.... If it's brown, cut it down, if it's green, don't be mean. That way it gives the orchid a chance to respike if it wants to or maybe even throw out a keiki.....
Hi, the problem is that if it's green, it also consumes resources. It's not always a good thing and some growers (myself included) cut spikes each year, rather than let it try and rebloom and take energy from a new one and from the orchid. Not the case of the Phal species which make much fewer flowers than the complex hybrids ;)
Hi Danny, Just wondering if you know any bugs climb on the root? Those bugs are really really really tiny. I thought they are like springtails. But they climb onto the roots.
Wow I've been panicking about the sringtails in my pots but it's good to hear they are harmless😍
Thank you for clarifying what spring tails do and look like!

@@MissOrchidGirlHi Danni thank you so much for replying. That's great 🤩 thank you for helping me decide 😊
Dani, can you explain what an orchid " eye" is, show one, and explain its importance.
Hi, it depends on what genus of orchid you refer to, any type in mind?

Yes please do. Her second question is helpful as I report those with poor root systems.

Are pill bugs bad for my orchids?? I can’t seem to find any info about these grey “rolly pollys” in orchids, but I’ve got them!
What about two very long and persisting extra green spikes on a rootless orchid?
Insects eats my cattleya leaves like caterpillars 😢. How do i get rid of them please?
