  • Today we will talk about the different ways orchid growers grow their orchids and today we shall focus on repotting!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
    Oncidium orchids do have a distinct set of cultural needs, which you can learn more about here • How to care for Oncidi... and more about how they grow here • Growth stages of Oncid...
    But the correct culture can be achieved through different methods, which each grower develops and perfects in accordance with their needs. There is no one good medium, no one way to water and multiple things can work for different people.
    There are techniques which make this easier, or faster or simply apply in different territories only. Media is different from country to country and quality varies as well. Quality can make some growers opt for medium preparation, but others will not and so on.
    Then there are different opinions amongst growers, which are not necessarily incorrect, but rather more useful or more negligible. One of these is nutrient usage from flower spikes, learn more here • Orchid experiment - Is...
    Media choice is a big one. There is NO perfect medium for everyone, just some that might fit you better. Here is a summary for organic orchid mixes • Orchid Care for Beginn...
    And these are just a few examples, are you interested in more examples, such as watering, or cutting spikes? Let me know :D

    You may have noticed some stuff crawling about on the stake.. I have no idea what they were, but if I had to guess, I'd say they were mealy bug babies, you might remember I showed you the mealies on my Oncidium flowers? no worries, these orchids were separated ever since I purchased them ;) but woaaaw what a good camera lol

    Love your videos ! Love !! Thanks for your help. I am an avid gardener who recently began to take an interest in orchids. Honestly I was intimidated by this beautiful plant. I seemed to kill nearly every orchid I had. Until I found you !!! Now I am much wiser. How to water properly, treat mealybugs, etc. Still learning alot-- but no longer killing orchids ! Thanks Dani. Paula from Mexico. One of my boxing’s from Orchid web, nice company. A box of 3 orchids, came with just 2 plant, me thinking the other is coming separately. No it was suppose to be in that box, someone on the trip took it. It was Princess Kaiulani a Bellina. $75.00 USD. I was heart sick. You can’t even trust the post offices.

    I recently report a dendrobium nobile into semi-hydro, and the first 2 weeks my orchid did well, but after I awared that the trunk of the orchid got wrinkly. I know this is a sign of dehidration, but the clay beads are moist, only the top layer is dry, but I moist them every morning. Where is the problem? How can I fix? Do the orchid needs more time to adapt the new environtment (repot her a month ago)?

    I just have a question what if in a few weeks after repotting this oncidium all the roots die ? What will you do then to stimulate the new roots to grow ? It's all hypothetical of course! Just curious because of 19 orchids only one of mine 3 have put out roots strong enough to maintain and balance themselves in their pot ! So what is the magic besides giving humidity and regular watering ? Or isn't there? Lol! Xoxo

    By now, I not only spray the roots with hydrogen peroxide, but the whole plants. At least with oncidium type orchids and dendrobiums, because in my area, EVERY SINGLE ONE of them comes with (real) spider mites ...

    A friend of mine has given me an Orchid for a gift yesterday since I grow a lot of African violets and and have a lot of house plants. I’ve always wanted to get an orchid an see how I would do since I know they’re a little more picky than your average plant. I found your channel and am thrilled!! I love watching your videos they are super helpful and I’m getting excited to start nurturing my new plant baby 😋. The orchid is from a grocery store flower shop and it’s in potting soil. It has a few flowers bloomed and several buds on it. From watching your videos I know potting soil isn’t the best medium for the plant so I wanted to ask if you if I should go ahead and re pot it even though it’s currently in bloom? From what I understand that’s something you typically want to avoid.

    Mobile nutrients like nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus can certainly be reused from the flower spike, but it shouldn't be needed if you have a good fertilizing regimen

    I'm just new to orchid growing so find your videos very informative and helpful but at times a little confusing. I noticed you are now using clay pots. I live in new Zealand my climate has distinctive seasons and we can get high humidity in the summer but cold damp in the winter. So should I stick to plastic side ventilation pots and the more environmentally friendly clay?

    My pseudobulbs are very light green or almost yellow. I ordered my orchid a couple weeks ago and that's how it came it's hydrated the bark medium doesn't really smell it all and it's in Spike I'm not sure if this is a normal color for the vegetation

    Hi Danny! Plastic vs clay pots has become a big dilemma for me. Clay has obvious disadvantages when repoting and I don't want to damage my orchids. On the other hand, plastic pots are single-use plastics, they can not be recycled, I think, but even if they can, they are plastic... As orchid lover, I am a nature lover as well, and I find myself not acting as I think I should. Maybe this will be an interesting topic for a future video: an environmentally friendly approach to the orchid hobby. What do you think?

    • @StinkyDustyBird
      @StinkyDustyBird 5 років тому +4

      Ester CP why can’t they be recycled? I recycle my pots when I buy flowers in spring. Or even reuse for that matter, I reuse a lot of pots

    • @LJKNIGHTDIVER
      @LJKNIGHTDIVER 5 років тому

      Tammy Douglas most things you “recycle” aren’t actually recycled. ESP since China stopped accepting recyclables and they were the biggest one who was taking recyclables. Reusing is great but it’s best not to have plastic at all because it takes so long to break down in the environment.

    If a root is healthy along a section, but then has a part where the "string" is exposed, followed by another healthy section, should i cut where the "string" is exposed? Will the healthy root past the exposed "string" section eventually die?

      Little gnats usually feed on decomposing bark or moss. If bark is too old or overwatered, the gnats will reproduce.
      Using clay beads or another media that cannot decompose will eliminate the problem. Allow any organic media to dry a bit and increase ventilation to discourage these gnats.
      Also, regular houseplants in soil can serve as places where gnats can breed if the soil stays too wet.

      She seems to repot everything as soon as she buys it to check for old/decomposing media, to check for snails, root problems, to remove any plugs of moss the nursery might have left in the mix, and to make sure that the new plant matches the rest of her collection so she can water them on a similar schedule. Hope this helps!

      She is using Leca, or Hydroton. These are marble-sized hard clay beads made of the same stuff clay pots are made from. They are used in hydroponic grows. You can find them in most specialty shops in the U.S.
