This was about Paul Kossoff - Free's guitarist. After he died, Bad Company were formed. Paul's father, David Kossoff, used to go to schools & colleges to teach (preach) about drug use, using his son as an example. He used to play various songs of his son, but always played this tribute song.
The song fits the life of any rock person who died young, but the key line is "Listen to the wind, you can still here him play"
John Bonham died after this song was released, but his death, inadvertently, lead to the break up of the original band as they were both managed by Peter Grant, & he was so upset by Bonzo's death, he neglected Bad Company to a degree
I don’t think this song was about Paul Kossoff because Bad company formed in 1973 this song was released in 1975 and Paul unfortunately died in 76 also John Bonham was in Led Zeppelin no Bad company
@@robertphelps1574 he never said Bonzo was in Bad Co. he was just saying Peter Grant was upset with his death, and couldn’t do his Managing of the band. Both bands were under Swan Song.
@@scottlaughlin9897 the original poster most certainly mentioned John Bonham.
This song was absolutely made about Paul kossoff after he died
Rodgers who wrote the song said the it was about the pitfalls which rock artistes face. This was the early 70s and the world had just lost Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Morrison. Bad Company is blues based rock band. I would never regard their music as soft though.
Bad Company
"Silver Blue and Gold"
Paul Rodgers (Bad CO) + Jimmy Paige (Zeppelin) = The Firm ~"Satisfaction Guaranteed"
Is Incredible...!
Midnight moonlight lady! Saw the Firm live - closest I came to Bad Co and Led Zeppelin
It wasn't written about Hendrix, specifically, but about all those rock stars we lost around this time, including Jimi, but also Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones et al.
Rodgers experience with Paul Kossoff in his band Free is very likely.
@@michaeldowson6988 They did include Kossoff in the tribute when they played this live in later years but the song was written and released years before Paul Kossoff died.
@@michaeldowson6988 This came out before Kossoff died. Very ironic isn’t it?
This song was inspired by all of those lost. When I last saw them live in 2009 they displayed photos of Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and others. Also, they showed the late Free guitarist Paul Kossoff and Bad Company bassist Boz Burrell. Kossoff and Burrell were band mates of Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke is Free and Bad Company respectively.
Bad Co has always been one of my favorites and Paul Rodgers is my "prototypical" Rock Voice! Led Zeppelin signed Bad Co as their first band to the Swan Song label....Peter Grant was an icon too. Other great Bad Co songs - Seagull - Simple Man - Silver Blue and Gold - Feel like makin love - rock n roll fantasy - ready for love - ETC ETC
Bad Company is a great band!
Paul Rodgers was a damn good rock vocalist…✌🏻
Still is an excellent vocalist
This Song was written by Paul Rogers as a tribute to his friend Paul Kossof (Son of Film Star David Kossof) who played Lead Guitar in Paul Roger's former Group "Free", after Paul died "Free" broke up, the two Paul's in "Free" were very, very close friends and this song was dedicated to him.
Where would we/I be without Wikipedia.
Bad Company are an English rock supergroup formed in Albury, Surrey in 1973 by singer Paul Rodgers, guitarist Mick Ralphs, drummer Simon Kirke and later adding bassist Boz Burrell.[1] Peter Grant, who managed the rock band Led Zeppelin, also managed Bad Company until 1982.
Bad Company enjoyed great success throughout the 1970s. Their first three albums, Bad Company (1974), Straight Shooter (1975), and Run with the Pack (1976), reached the top five in the album charts in both the UK and the US.[2][3] Many of their singles and songs, such as "Bad Company", "Can't Get Enough", "Good Lovin' Gone Bad", "Feel Like Makin' Love", "Ready for Love", "Shooting Star", and "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy", remain staples of classic rock radio. They have sold 20 million RIAA-certified albums in the US and 40 million worldwide.[4]
Forget about who it was about Bad Company was a great band and had so many iconic songs
It was written about Paul Kossoff, who was in band with Paul Rogers called Free. Paul Kossoff died of a heroin overdose!
"Wishing Well" was also about him, of course.
I had this on 8-track back in the day.... Used to go cruisin' in my '67 Mustang, windows down, volume cranked up...those were the days...😉👍
Bad Company was the first band signed to Zeppelin's label Swan Song...
When this came out I fell in love with it.
Glad you got the shooting star reference about shining bright for a short time then burning out
What a voice! Has there ever been a more rounded, soulful voi e than Paul Rogers
He performs without monitor's
Led Zeppelin signed them. They were on Jimmy pages label , Swan Song
Thanks for Bad Company. A great rock group with one of the best rock vocalists ever. Now sample Badfinger a totally different group from the same era. Another great band, but one of the most tragic groups in history.
Led Zeppelin signed them for their Swan Song record label.
"Burning Sky" is one of their best imo. Damn sexy too. Love Paul Rodgers' voice. 💙
That wa
That wasn't Paul Rogers
@@jerrymoadjr6098
It's absolutely Paul Rodgers, singing lead as usual. Who were you thinking of?
@@deborahcornell171 no that was Brian Howe
@@jerrymoadjr6098
Brian Howe replaced Paul Rodgers in 1986. "Burnin' Sky" is from the 1977 album of the same name, 9 years earlier. That's facts, along with the fact that I had the album when it came out (the song got a lot of radio play) & saw Bad Company in concert shortly after it came out (with Paul). Brian Howe's career didn't even really get started till about 1983, with Ted Nugent.
This song is about Paul Kossoff, guitarist from Free of All Right Now fame!
Led Zeppelin signed Bad Company on their label Swan Song
Great song, great album. Many suggest this is about Paul Kossof of Free. His descent finished Free and Bad Company started
Mick Ralphs and Simon Kirke stated on In the Studio (which devoted an episode to Straight Shooter) that the track "Shooting Star" (written by lead singer, Paul Rodgers) was lyrically inspired by the drug and alcohol-related deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison. Like John all their first names started with J.
Led Zeppelin signed Bad Company to their label. Swan Song.
The modern conception is this is about PAUL KOSSOFF but it's not about anyone in particular just the long line of casualties of the rock industry . Fabulous band with the ultimate ROCK/BLUES frontman PAUL RODGERS ex Free , SIMON KIRKE ex Free on drums, BOZ BURRELL ex King Crimson on bass and MICK RALPHS ex Mott the Hoople on guitar, SUPERGROUP ? YOU BETTER BELIVE IT.
It's about koss, genius lead guitar player for the mighty band free
Bad Company's first album was the first US release on Led Zeppelin's label Swan Song.
Lots of great Bad Co. tunes..! A couple lessor known are "Don't let me down" and "The way I choose"
One of my favourites on the Queen/paul rodgers tour
For me, other songs lyrically in this vein:
Juke Box Hero by Foreigner (the studio version from Foreigner 4, some of the live versions have a different lead singer)
Limelight by Rush
and
Turn the Page by Bob Segar
Musically they're different styles, but for me, the stories told are similar.
Thanks Harry!
This could be about any number of musicians we lost too soon.
They "go fast, die young"!
It's a timeless classic about a recurring theme..
Foreigner's JUKEBOX HERO is in a similar vein.
And my favorite is a song by Tesla titled SONG AND EMOTION. It's a tribute to Stephen Clark, the guitarist for Def Leppard that died from alcohol poisoning.
Tesla and Def Leppard toured together in the 80s and shared a tour bus, so you get pretty close. Like it or not. But the tribute suggests they loved Stephen.
Give it a spin. Thank me later.👍🏻
I always took it to mean he committed suicide. Sad song but so well written, played, and sung.
Love this song, thanks Harri 💕 made my Saturday night.
Good one Harri, thank you
I've got one you are sure to love , Funeral for a friend/ Love lies bleeding by Elton John!! if your time was short - it would be a MUST to hear one more time , it's that good!!!!!!
Bad Company is great! Listen to I Feel Like Making Love, Bad Company.
So many greats died young. Great pick and analysis Harri!
This is a great band. Nice choice. ✌️🌺
The song was written before Paul Kossoff passed away to clear up any confusion on that point.
Led Zeppelin had these boys signed to swan song records I believe
Saw them headline with Golden Earring in the mid 70s as the opening act. ! A fantastic show only 10 feet from Paul Rodgers !!!
hinting about hendrix and several others.
Paul Rodgers "NOW" (The album) is imo his best work since Bad Co. Never heard it mentioned by any supposed Rodgers fans. Any takers?
Burning Sky is a good one to give a listen to , Seagull is a slower, softer . so many to choose from!
Also check out Rock and Roll Fantasy.
Can't go wrong with and Bad Co ..
Olá sou do Brasil possivelmente é sobre paul kossof que já tocou com o vocalista
💜
Well done … Johnny be Goode I fell is the a
anthem To rock ‘n’ roll
Zeppelin signed them.
Hendrix and all that came before and after him. Does anyone know the meaning of the 27 club? They were all shooting stars.
This is by no means considered soft rock.
This song could have easily been written for Kurt Cobain. It's the price you pay for laying your heart on the line for everyone to rip apart and destroy.
I think it is an amalgam of them all, using the fictional character Johnny. I wonder if Johnny was a member of the "27" club?
Paul kossof
Don't you know??
10 -4, Hendrix ?
This is the price you pay to sing like a bird.
