In an interview he was asked which song he was most proud of composing, he said it was this song. The way each segment on piano has that dissonance, I feel what you felt Harri. Somehow the tones being slightly off are similar to his emotions. Great reaction my friend, have a great day and take care.
A beautiful song and amazing lyrics. Why is nobody picking up on the emotion evoked by the extremely clever phrasing? Billy Joel is a genius song writer and he taps into our inner core in ways most people don’t realise. Thanks for this video to bring this to more people’s attention.
Someone's already said that love is giving someone the ability to destroy you but trusting them not to. It is a leap of faith. Billy's song is true poetry. And I think he had his heart broken a few times...
This song is so achingly vulnerable. All of his best love songs are like this: admitting the difficulty of loving, the likeliness of relationships to fail, the choice to love anyway... They're love songs for adults who have been through some crap.
He had a tumultuous relationship, with one of the most beautiful women in the world at that time! Her name is Christie Brinkley. I suppose that could be the inspiration to this masterpiece from 1989!
So deceptively simple, yet so powerful. One of my absolute favorites. Just intense, and feels utterly true. Offering another person your heart opens you to hurt - again. But it’s the only way to love. So special.
H . . . the human heart is huge. It has room for tons of bad shit, but it also has acres and acres for songs like this . . . and there are those like Billy Joel with the vision to remind us and there are some of us who are moved by the rememberance
A beautiful song, so simple and elegant. Another Billy Joel song in the same vein is "Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)" . i think you'd really connect to it. Keep up the good work my man!
We love that song and used it when my son's sweet companion animal had to be pts at an early age. We made a video collage of all the photos of her with him and our friends and played that song. It's been 6 years, but I cry every time I watch it. And we used the version The King's Singers do.
This was his side of his relationship with a supermodel at the time she went away and made it big and he spoke to her and knew she was going to end the relationship.. your the only one who knows wrote it before she ended it and laid his heart out there... watched a recent interview and this was the song out of all that he was proudest of... he's a ge it's songwriter and tells a story with music and perfect lyrics
I still weep every time I hear this one. I’m glad it touched you, too. ❤️ Billy Joel speaks to us from his soul about the complexity of being human in a difficult world.
He wrote this song regarding his relationship with Elle McPherson. He was in his 30’s, she wasn’t even 20. He knew there was no way it would last. Shortly after they split, he started his relationship with Christie Brinkley. He met her at the same time as Elle, and she was more his age.
This remains my favorite Billy Joel song. So simple, but so elegant. You feel his pain, mistrust and also hopefulness all come out. Thank you for doing this. ❤
The pure, unbounded SURRENDER in this song floors me EVERY time I hear it. This song is the most beautiful way of describing carving your very heart out of your chest, and laying it on the ground before the one you love for them to do whatever they want with it.
Your comment about wondering how singing songs this emotional affects the singer during and after the show... it reminded me of something that Bonnie Raitt shared about her song "I Can't Make You Love Me." For Raitt, the song was notoriously difficult to sing, due to its required vocal range, difficult phrasing and breathing, and the emotional content involved. She said: "I mean, 'I Can't Make You Love Me' is no picnic. I love that song, so does the audience. So it's almost a sacred moment when you share that, that depth of pain with your audience. Because they get really quiet, and I have to summon ... some other place in order to honor that space. - Raitt, 2002 NPR interview
The official video of this song is just him on stage with his piano, in black and white, and the audience perfectly silent, all with their lighters up. Expressing your pain in others will either free you or destroy you. Artists tend to thrive most in high emotional states. If you want a fun song by Joel, listen to "I go to Extremes"!!!!
He can say in his songs, that the majority of us WISH we could say in times of love and heartbreak. Another song of Billy's that always brings me to tears, cos I have FELT what he expresses here
Billy and Stevie wonder are true poets…Their lyrics are just unbelievably top shelf and brilliantly crafted. You should listen to good night my angel which is an actual lullaby he wrote for his baby daughter and you should also listen to good night Saigon which is his tribute to the troops but you should absolutely make sure you have the lyrics to good night Saigon so that you get the whole message
Perfect reaction, My Friend. You have a new subscriber. This song is the story of my life. I had only felt the thorns. Then I met her, and I loved her so much. We became very close. But the time came when I knew I had to hand her my heart and let her know how I felt deep in my soul. I handed her my heart one evening when we were alone together, and yes…she broke it that night. This song tells the story perfectly 😢.
He has quite a few songs about loving, being hurt but still taking chances to love again. "Sleeping with the Television on" is another one of his along these lines though its more rocking.
I can't agree more with your reactions Harri. I have to say though, you are a victim of circumstance (not your fault), as you stopped the first time it was right on my favorite lyric. "And So it Goes, and so it goes, And So Will You Too I suppose". Bill Joel does have a way about him! Most musicians have connection with his very first "Piano Man", as they can identify with the clever lyrics 🙂
I can't say anything about Billy that hasn't already been said. I've seen him in concert 7 times over 3 decades. And to see him and Sir Elton together has no words to describe that experience. This man can tell stories that make you feel like you are a part of it. Someone who has been through the life he's had really put it into his music. A brilliant composer. I don't have a favorite so I'll mention some songs other than the well know. "Captain Jack", "Angry Young Man", "Allentown", and "For the Longest Time". Just a miniscule list of his tracks that transcend into each generation.
I didn't know this song existed until we had to sing it in choir in high school. I was going through my first break up at the time, and having to sing this absolutely tore me apart. To this day, it is the only Billy Joel song I really like.
Nice! He has so many songs that just grabs your emotions and puts you in that place. So many great songs to listen to. This is the Time, Leningrad, I Goto Extremes, Pressure, River of Dreams is just a few to get your started.
Just a cultural note; the expression "and so it goes" was about fatalism and from the Kurt Vonnegut's book Slaughterhouse Five, a oddly factual yet surrealistic novel all at the same time, about how Vonnegut was a POW who survived the fire bombing of Dresden. It was Boomer counter culture required reading, but a book that was/is hard to talk about. Ya just gotta read it, man. All there was to say about the book seemed to be "and so it goes" . It was understood to mean, so what more is there to say about that ... Oh, I just realized it was very much like Forrest Gump's saying "and that all I have to say about that ", and it just as much a thing that people actually said and knew the subtext. Making a connection like that always makes me smile.
Oh Harri, this is my favorite romantic song by him. I either want to or do cry when I hear it---- how can you not when someone bares their soul like that?
An extraordinary song by an extraordinary artist. I saw him live for the Storm Front Tour in Sydney. He and the band were superb. And you can have this heart to brake....Seems like there's something in my eye..
This song.. your heart opens up, your soul takes it in and you become a more loving and compassionate person . No one who lets this song inside leaves unchanged.
It's hard to pick a favorite Billy Joel song, but this might be mine. You should listen to the official music video version of this, too, since he was much older and wiser when he recorded it.
One of the saddest and most mature looks at love/lost love in pop music history. My favorite Billy Joel lyric and one of my favorite lyrics ever - what a great song
He took piano lessons from age four and the teacher also taught ballet too and he would get picked on by other kids when going to his lessons carrying his musical books. His father was European and could not settle in America and left the family home to return to Europe, leaving just Billy and his sister with their mother and so Billy took up boxing as a way to learn to stick up for himself. In his last fight he damaged his noise and worried that it would affect his singing voice and so he gave up boxing.
As a writer myself, I can say that when I wrote a poem or a song, that in and of itself was therapy for me. When I was a young man, I would experience anxiety for no reason. I would pick up a pen and just start writing... once I was finished, I would read what I wrote and discover what it was that I was anxious about, and then I would feel better. It wasn't even like writing for me... it was almost like I was dictating for someone else. I don't think I ever wrote a poem that that took me more than 5 minutes to write, and some of them were over a page long.. Billy Joel, Dan Fogelburg... these were some of my idols growing up. Check out Leader of the Band, and Make Love Stay, both by Dan Fogelburg...
You have such a beautiful vibe about you --- I appreciate your candor, your insights ... and the gentle kindness that seems to constitute your core. Thank you for the positivity you bring to the rest of us!
This is my favorite Billy Joel song, and one of my favorite songs, period. The same lyrics about the thorns on the rose is my favorite line of this song as well. Billy Joel wrote some of the most beautiful songs - music and lyrics - of all time. Thank you for a great reaction!
A friend of mine commented on this song: it is a sad ballad, a lament, that apparently doesn't match the strong beats on the piano... but it's as if these strong beats represent his despair about the end of the relationship.
Im so happy to hear and see someone react to this song. I sang this sing in choir and to hear those words in chords and sing it with sensitivity always gave me shivers. I live this song, both in Billy's voice and in choir. I would say its one of my favourite coir songs ❤❤❤

BILLY JOEL IS A REMARKAB;E MUSICIAN.
He wrote this song for Elle McPherson. His soulfulness is a gift that helps me express in this song.

"New York State of Mind" is FANTASTIC!
He's a story-teller, musically ❤️
Billy Joel is a treasure. One of the genius songwriter/storyteller talents of our world. ✌️🌺
He had a tumultuous relationship, with one of the most beautiful women in the world at that time! Her name is Christie Brinkley. I suppose that could be the inspiration to this masterpiece from 1989!
Elle MacPherson. He likes models. And they like him!
He’s gonna be so revered, not that he isn’t now, when we no longer have him with us. Hopefully it’s a long time away, and maybe I’ll go first?
My favorite song of his. I also like scenes from an Italian restaurant a lot.
I love your sweetness! You make a good point about how singers can sing songs as heavy as this & then have to move onto another song so seamlessly...
Listening with my eyes closed it reminds me of a old Irish folk song.
I cry every time I hear this song. The sound of it just rips my heart out!!! You are so precious, Harri, for your sensitive and sweet nature. 🥰❤️
Vienna is another song you would love. And Billy said it's one of his favorites.
"matter of trust" is a good song & "The Stranger" "Honesty"
So deceptively simple, yet so powerful. One of my absolute favorites. Just intense, and feels utterly true. Offering another person your heart opens you to hurt - again. But it’s the only way to love. So special.
So sweet to see the best of music being rediscovered.
Such beautiful poetry and so beautifully delivered.

Billy is a true masterful genius. He writes in every style of music. In the song Zanzibar he crossed jazz with rock.
He wrote this song regarding his relationship with Elle McPherson. He was in his 30’s, she wasn’t even 20. He knew there was no way it would last. Shortly after they split, he started his relationship with Christie Brinkley. He met her at the same time as Elle, and she was more his age.

"Every time I've held a rose, it seems I only felt the thorns" such beautiful lyrics that sum up the love/hate in a relationship that can happen.

I am not sure that I go to Extremes is a fun song in content, being that it is about a manic-depressive but musically it is upbeat at least.

He nails life in his lyrics
"Our Italian Restaurant " is uplifting and great song, Harri.
Its a very sad song about regrets and cheating on your wife.
Or, "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", which is the actual name of the song

such a great song writer/piano player. Joel started out as an amateur boxer, and skilled enough to make the Golden Gloves tournament.
He took piano lessons from age four and the teacher also taught ballet too and he would get picked on by other kids when going to his lessons carrying his musical books.
