I think it was a nod to Paul Kossoff from Free. He died of an overdose after Free had achieved success with All Right Now and Paul Rodgers was the lead singer. He was a shooting star along with many others.
As usual, Jamal has the most empathy of anyone and feels the loss and expresses it very well. I appreciate the depth of Jamals reactions.

This song seems to be a comment about the ups and downs of success. Many artists can fit the description of Johnny. But it can be a picture of anyone who rises to sudden fame. James Dean comes to mind. Some do manage to overcome and live on. The fact that Ozzy Osbourne is still living, is insane considering his crazy story.

Paul Kossoff, who was Paul Rodgers' band mate in the group Free, died of a heroin overdose in 1976, a year after this was released. He was just 25 years old when he died. It's a big reason folks used to think this song was about a single person. It was basically about the pitfalls of being in the world of rock and roll.

Jamal, thanks for laying out the truth about the stories in these songs. These so called "pop stars" seem to die alone in a drug induced stupor all too often. 63 here man and no friends. Had plenty but when things went south for me, they all kicked me to the curb. Fair weather friends I call them. Then they want to make the excuse that it's because of me, to help ease their own conscience. Meanwhile I was there for them through thick and thin, always. I say screw 'em, I'd rather be alone than have fake ass friends.

You hit the nail squarely on the head, my friend! What this song is about is making the statement that the music industry can be difficult to handle for someone that is not prepared for it. people wishing to get into it can be swept along into the depths of despair, as they try to figure out how to make it work. And if drugs and alcohol enter the picture, as it does for way too many, it becomes even more difficult to deal with. Many have ended their lives because they were unable to pull out of the path the business takes them on. Others, realize where that path leads, and have the strength to turn it all around. Those people take one of two roads forward: stepping out of the limelight and living the rest of their lives quietly, or taking charge of the way they deal with their careers in the business, making sure to end any practices that are destroying them.
The lesson of this song is that you must know what you are getting yourself into before jumping in. You must think ahead, and see where it can lead, then decide for yourself which way you should go with it. The wise ones usually enjoy a long and prosperous career, if they can make sound decisions on the path they need to take.

Although the song is "fictional" it's a generalization of the many rock stars who died young. Paul Rodgers (lead vocalist) wrote this song as a "warning" to other artists not to fall into the fame trap. A year after the song was released, this song hit home. Former Free bandmate, guitarist Paul Kossoff died of a heroin overdose. He was only 25.

See the doc 'Soaked in Bleach' about Cobain. People high on heroin NEVER shoot themselves. It's a high like none other. U don't ever want it to end, let alone permanently.
