The airlines keep complaining about pilot shortages but are unwilling to invest in their own cadets like they do in Europe. Self-inflicted. They should have some skin in the game and cover a majority of the pilot's aviation education if they're serious about solving this problem, because I'm not spending $100k+ for a "maybe".

I am an optometrist, I encouraged my son to avoid being any kind of doctor. He is now a first officer for a major American carrier ( 737 air craft). Yes, it is expensive but after bachelor's degree one can get a job. Yes, getting enough air flight hours is expensive. However, you avoid the expense and years in medical school. Compensation is better than most medical specialties. Pilots have union protection. Doctors are being treated like trash by hospital companies. If you can swing it, avoid medical school and be a pilot. This is my warning to the next generation.

Two careers that are pampered by their employers, Doctors and Pilots. If you don't want to get your hands dirty, become a pilot like your son. Compensation is good and the Pilots Union protects you from Medical Mal-practice lawsuits. 😉

Nice video Garrett! I’ve been a controller at Miami Center now for 16 years now and it’s always nice to see the other side of the operation especially since we aren’t allowed to jumpseat right now due to COVID restrictions. Sorry for the Wx delays. Welcome to South Florida in the summer. That combined with pilot shortages is just a recipe for huge delays. Stay positive and hopefully it will start getting better soon. Take Care!

They did it to themselves! In 1990 I started to go after it after getting my license at 16. Due to all the hours needed all the tickets to get on my own and the overall cost it was almost an impossible journey. $100,000+ for a job flying twins at $40,000 starting pay. If Delta had a school and pay for the tickets I would be flying for them today!

Same here. I wanted to go to the AF, but didn't join. And flight college was expensive, and my family was poor middle class. I saw the news, all these boomers in the American airlines class learning to be a pilot. But if you listen closely, they already have the 1500hr requirements done. So it's not like AA is going to give me 1500. And is there really a shortage? Everyone wants to be a pilot. This is like the IT field. Say we need more IT but it's saturated.

I got Privates Pilots License a little over 2 years ago and would love to still get my IFR/Commercial/Multi and maybe even my ATP one day. Thing is at 27 years old I’m not willing to go 75K-100K in debt for a job that only has a starting pay of 55K-70K (depending on the company).
Airlines imo should instantly look into programs for people with only PPL’s and helping them get through the rest of their training. I love the aviation industry, but the up front cost to get in the right seat is absurd.

Don’t rush it, just go at a rate you can afford, and stay out of debt. I started my PPL at 39. I’m now 42 and just got my commercial two weeks ago and multi two days ago. Some airlines have had ab initio programs, but the selection ratio is not favorable, with so many people applying. So the barriers make it harder at first, but better in the end. They need to reduce the Total Time requirement for RATP though. I think buzzing around in a 172/Cherokee flying day VFR in good weather, just to build time is a little silly.

There are many ways to become an airline pilot without spending 100k as most think. You are able to get through to your CFI rating for around 45k with a private flight instructor, etc... After you achieve your CFI rating, you get paid to fly and build your hours from Commercial to your Airline Transport Pilot License. Therefore it is not 100k as it would be at a school where you are paying for the additional hours that are not always being replaced with instructing. And on the topic of pilot pay on the job and maybe rough conditions for some newer airline pilots, anybody in this career should just enjoy flying and their job no matter the conditions.

I’ve been saying this for years. I have been obsessed with aviation since I was a young boy, and began flying at 15.
However, when I realized the financial commitment to flying, I realized I couldn’t do it. I went into computer science instead, and make more than a captain does at most airlines to. The airlines at LEAST have to start paying for training, and they’ll be full of pilots. Heck, I would leave if they paid for it.

All this nonsense of not being able to find qualified candidates for positions is corporate redirect and deflection from the underlying root cause that every one of the "news" articles published by the "corporate citizen" are espousing. . . . . which is to OFFER A HIGHER SALARY!!!! No one wants to mention THAT little consideration however. They'll just keep serving up sub-par customer service and tell you all that they cant find qualified help. Exactly... The biggest barrier to getting there is the cost of all of it. I even tried for the United Aviate academy, and it would be a great academy except for the fact that it's still $75k and they're based in Arizona, so if you don't live there, you also have to pay out of pocket to move there and somehow find a place to live and keep up with rent (good luck with that in this economy, by the way).. All while they expect you to attend this academy full time, 5 days a week... If you aren't wealthy, or have wealthy family who's willing to help out, I just don't see how this is possible.. These airlines need to start recruiting into these academies and paying for the training at the very least, or if not, then FAFSA needs to start providing loans to do this, because there's no way in hell that Sallie Mae or whoever is giving $100k in loans, even if they're student loans, to anyone in their teens or early 20's, without a cosigner at best.

I am from Nigeria and I have always wanted to become a pilot but it is very expensive to go into flight school. Airlines should be able to sponsor flight training and then they can have an agreement with the pilot to work for them. I believe that’s also a solution to the pilot shortage issue. I’m 33yo, I had a very successful career in solar for 12 years, was a Director of sales at Tesla, VP of Sales for another reputable solar company and in 2019 I started my own company that was successful for 13 months until covid hit. I checked so many boxes throughout my 20’s that I thought would make me happy but I wasn’t, I was miserable. I was very good at my job and had more experience than most people in the industry because solar was still relatively new as an industry, but I couldn’t even fake the passion towards the end. At that point I started to notice how fake my friendships were. They were all just competitive sales guys waiting for their chance to move their chess piece. In the end though I had to risk everything at the chance that the universe just hasn’t aligned just enough for me to see that path that so many are lucky to see at younger ages! I admire those that were 12yo and said “Im going to be a nurse. Or I’m going to be a lawyer.” And then they didn’t hesitate for a second lol full on lawyer by 25 lol So I resigned from my company half way through 2020, spent the next year with family still as lost as I had ever been. This time last year though I had business ideas but nothing jumped off the page yet and fear started this creep in. So I had to just do the responsible thing as a 32yo man with no job and bills to pay… I packed my suitcase and I bought a one way ticket to Cancun, Mexico 😂 Tulum to be exact. Moved into an Airbnb down there and did some crazy psychedelics and spoke to amazing people and got tan and happy and energetic again. Then the energy charged my visions and passions. I wrote down the most ridiculous requirements for a career lol like to the point that they almost seemed unrealistic. Things like ability to move to any climate or any part of the world if I want too.. ability to change things up if I get bored… must have bragging rights lol like sound good on a business card or parties, something to really be proud about.. had to be something I have memories of as a child in one way or another… could it be portrayed in a movie or video game? Can’t be a 9-5, has to have earning potential into the multi 6 figures… and a few other ridiculous requirements lol I just said fuck it’s it’s my one life and I’m not settling. Took me 1 day until it hit me all of a sudden after seeing a UA-cam video pop up randomly cause I wasn’t searching anything.. the video said Top 10 best jobs as a helicopter pilot. Bingo! I knew it before I even watched the video. My Dad is an ER doctor and did medFlight for a number of years when I was a kid and one of my favorite memories as a child was 4th grade parent career day where one by one you introduce your mom or dad and they briefly describe what they do for work.. Mrs. Whitney called out my name and said it was my turn so the whole class and other parents all walked outside to our playground and soccer field when off in the distance you start to hear the bass filled flutter of the propellers getting louder and louder as the MedFlight Helicopter landed directly in the middle of our soccer field, just Sparky the Pilot and my Dad almost like a super hero stepping off that helicopter in his white lab coat and stethoscope beneath the flight vest. Sparky shut off the engine and I don’t think any of the other kids or parents got their turn that day cause the next hour was spent letting the kids sit in the cockpit and put on the helmet and stuff lol it was the best thing a kid could ask for. I know my Dad was the super hero that day and I’ll forever respect him and other doctors for what they do… not the fact that I could be a helicopter pilot for 1 year of schooling and less than $50,000 and have great earning potential and all those boxes checked! Game on!
So long story I know but, now I’m at The college of southern Nevada enrolled in an associates degree in aviation technology - Commercial Pilot. All my gen Ed courses were transferred over from 10 years ago so I only have about 22 credits left and i can graduate with my hours flying all included and an instrument rating. You can do fixed wing or heli in the same time frame. I finally have that energy and passion I dreamt of! I just had to be more afraid of
Not finding it, than I was to go
      Looking.
Cheers to you and anyone else that read this! I hope that if you’ve found your love and passion in life then I admire snd respect you and if you haven’t found it but are willing to go looking then I admire and respect you aswell!

The FAA needs to look into the training programs and find ways to cut back on the hours. I passed my PAR written and will start my flight lessons tomorrow! My school makes me have to pass the written before I can even start flying at Middle Georgia State Univeristy. I’m stoked!!!! I wish that we ran our program like in Asia, where you only need to have a PPL and get training at the company then become a 2nd officer with on the job training. It would definitely speed up a students way to the flight deck and help the shortage. They don’t have this issue overseas.. but I was born and raised in North Carolina so I will continue my instrument and beyond back in NC! Let’s go!!!!!

I love all the guys complaining about how much it costs. If you really wanted it, you would’ve found a way, like I (and countless others) did. Unfortunately, I was born 15 years too soon and my career has been a battle all the way through whereas these people coming through now are essentially having a six figure salary immediately handed to them right out of school. They have no idea how lucky they are. When I started at a regional I would literally not eat meals because I was out of money. I survived on peanuts pretzels and water for days at a time waiting for my next check. So I’d like to see some young people with perspective coming through, realizing how good they’ve got it and not complaining about a damn thing.

As much as I wanted to be an airline pilot as a kid, I'm so relieved that didn't pan out. As it is, I'm not required to take the clot shot to keep my job. Those poor pilots were and they're dropping like flies, many of them mid-flight.
I'm so relieved I never entered the industry, even though it crushed me to initially be rejected on account of being on the autism spectrum.

There’s no pilot shortage. If airlines pay for the training they would have zero issues with applicants lining up to Learn to fly. People either don’t have the financials to do it or just plain don’t bother because of the cost and why would they? The world just shut down for almost 2 years. Can you imagine taking a loan out for training and the next recession happens? Shortage means there’s no qualified people to fly and that’s just not true. I’m sick of hearing it

We should follow the European training model. The 1500 hours to ATP requirement is just not practical. And if you compare the US to European pilots, it seems there is no quantifiable safety benefit to the 1500-hour requirement. If we don't do this soon our whole commercial aviation system is going to collapse.
