YES! That was most beautiful version I've ever heard and so well performed by Bea. I have always regretted she never recorded this song on an album anywhere. But that scene, at least in my view, should have been an Emmy award winning moment. She knows how to convey such emotion and whimsy in her singing. Truly a wonderful moment.
dorothy singing what'll i do was a very much needed moment for her character. throughout this season the jokes about her looks and her inability to find men were absurdly higher than any other seasons, but this scene squashes over all of it and puts dorothy in a situation that takes her already established talent for singing and pumps it up ten fold; in this moment she is finally given a raw and earnest moment to show her elegance, her poise, and her beauty - this scene is hers, she is the main attraction of this scene; nullifying any jabs at her beauty from up until this point. it's gratifying when the character who is always picked on gets their time to truly glow. this scene BELONGED to dorothy, it was beauty, it was elegance, it was justice for her character.
Also what I really liked about that scene was the pianist was really kind & inviting, giving Dorothy the opportunity & encouraging her as she started to sing. The whole scene was just so well done. :)
Sometimes people forget that Rue wasn't really a slut, Betty wasn't really dumb, and Estelle wasn't really that old. But, the jabs at Dorothy's looks, it was really how Bea looked. I'd hope she never took any of it personal, but it did sadden me a bit that her looks were the butt of the joke when in reality she was so beautiful and so elegant and talented.
