PSA! Don't build everything all at once as this could cause bugs that prevent from certain things appearing after construction, like storage, furniture and cosmetics. Instead build 2 - 3 things at a time, periodically leaving the crafting bench and confirm what you actually build is there! Should you choose not heed this warning you will get missing items in your house that stands out like a sore thumb, IE levitating mannequin because the table did not spawn under it!
Back in the day, i started skyrim, started to geather stone from a rock and left for school. When i came back i never needed to get stone ever again. Probably the best idea i ever had
I have just started Heljarken Hall and did your mining and tea break trick, my character ended up with 3046 stone because my neighbour dropped in some Christmas treats! Double whammy! I always build one of the towers to have a great sniping balcony and lookout point.
Skyrim: Extreme Home Makeover Edition Thank you so much for making this video! I'm getting ready to build my first home and needed a good starter guide that was informative without being an infodump. This is exactly what I needed! Btw I let my character mine Quarried Stone while I was watching and ended up with ~1,000 stones by the end. Figure that's not a bad start. At least her arms got a good warm-up for all the iron she's about to mine..
I really wish this video had been around when I built my first house, great shout on getting all your stuff together before you build and then saving, for some reason that never occurred to me .... Really good video, but if you don't mind me saying as good a video as this is, I think you should be concentrating on videos to get more subs
Thanks brother, I always wanted to do a guide for building your Hearthfire home since my first time building one, when I looked on YT for help, all the other guides are tbh utter crap so as I was building heljarchen I thought why not, plus I know these don't bring in subs but I want to have a comprehensive guide list for people in the future, but yeah you're right I could be making more popular stuff and I'll get round to it at some stage, just happy bumbling along at the moment
so... the enchanter and alchemy towers are not necessary and the kitchen/greenhouse are important (to get butter and plants). Other than aesthetics I don't see any reason to go with the enchanter or alchemy towers ever and the only real choice is the last wing.
Excellent vid! One tip to any new folks too, you need a lot more materials than you think! Sometimes, you'll just have to build it one room at a time. I've also had problems with Valdimar and Gregory not showing up. I can't imagine what happens to them, but there are times they've never made it...lol. Can't wait for your mods showcase on this. I'm eager to see that "adventurer's basement"! I have to have a kitchen in at least one of my homes, because they do respawn food and you'll get some good stuff in there like crostatas and butter and honey. I feel like the kitchen and the greenhouse are the best bang for your buck in a home. And the greenhouse will come in especially handy if you follow TO's alchemy guides!
Thanks a million, I'm just sitting here trying to work out how to do the mod showcase plus the crafting hall (as I call it) may have to do two vids, one showing the hall then the next dedicated to showcasing the mods ... anyway there may be a greenhouse or two on show ... there may be a kitchen on show also ... who knows ? .... Any thoughts on the thumbnail for this vid ? It's a little different from my usual stuff and I can't decide if it works or not
Thanks for the feedback, I need fresh eyes as sometimes when you're too close to something you can't see the wood for the trees ... I like it and well done for the CoC spot !!!!
I kind of took a chance on this, there was nothing skyrimish that was suitable and I wanted to try something that was a bit more friendly if you know what I mean, thumbnails are important and I'm trying to ramp up my click through rate, even though I like my other thumbnails I want to see if something softer works and cute can be good if it works, question is if you weren't subbed would you have clicked on it ?
Extremely helpful video. Still worth noting that you can buy lumber at your steward too 👍 But of course steward becomes available once you build small house - but to build it lumber you have on start is enough.
About the logs. You are able if are in good standing with the lumbermill owner/worker to use the mill yourself. With Lod all it takes just chop some wood. If you are into immersion that is. Its better this way as you save money by doing it your self.
Like you, I have Lakeview as my family home. Winstad is for Alchemy and Hjarchen is shared between enchanting and smithing; it only makes sense to me in my own sort of roleplay head-space. Anyway, the bedroom, kitchen and trophy room are in the family home and I like to pretend that I'm entertaining guests there with the trophies displayed there; I make up stories for each one. Winstad has the aforementioned tower of purpose with a greenhouse to accompany it; I don't know if the Hatchery only works if a kitchen is built or not though. As for Hjarchen: the enchanting tower, armory and storage room are there "for the sake of getting in some work done in peace"; I also have my acquired Daedric artifacts there (displayed or otherwise). If I was savvy enough, I would make my own mod to allow the following to occur: 1. Modify the bedroom so a player can adopt all 8 default orphans 2. Have the basement accommodate the tower-based compliments without having to build the towers themselves 3. Allow for a sub-basement to be made for the smithing forge Here's how I see it being laid out: 1. The bedroom would be divided with a wall between the two doorways-- one side for the boys and the other for the girls 2. The Alchemy-side would be where the ladder and sub-basement (I'm getting there) are, enchanting is where the divine altars would be with two enchanters being there (the staff enchanter along with the default one if the Dragonborn DLC is enabled) and the biggest section would be the new library to accommodate more bookshelves 3. The sort-of doorway in the basement where a vampire coffin can be built and placed would open into a spiral-staircase leading to the smithing forge, but said coffin cannot be built; a fake wardrobe (like Hjerem in Windhelm) might be acceptable though. It's necessary to double the size of the house because I completely forgot to say that all of the non-tower rooms can be built (both options on all 3 sides) and an option for an actual roof or balcony can given to them while building said rooms; the only exception is the greenhouse (sunroof available to compensate). There is also a touch of realism here: the sub-basement would also allow for a sort-of ventilation system to be built with the use of Dwarven metal (their locations being pretty much everywhere) while also acting as a kinda furnace for the house when it gets that cold (Hjarchen Hall makes the most sense) and I call the whole thing "One Big Happy Family"; I still have a few other details to work out though.
Damn mine nearly same 😮 Lake has bed trophy kitchen cuz it made most sense as my main home. And lydia the steward. Hjall enchant armour and armory And windst is my mages retreat. Greenhouse alchemy and library plus fishery is a must cuz roe is so hard to farm
I don't know if it's on others but they legendary edition on the PS3 if you decorate the small house when you convert it you'll keep an end table to the right of the door as you first enter

My only complaint is you didn’t include any convenient mining locations in the video for iron or corundum. It would have been nice to have just included like “there’s an iron mine here (highlight on the map) where you can get Iron for free”
With the fishing add-on getting anything other then the Windstead Manor is not worth it, i used to like Lakeview a lot up until i got tired of the constant Giant Spawns always killing my Live stock, as well as one side of the house is facing a mountain, while the other one is facing a necromancer shrine! Furthermore its special production ability Apiary is overshadowed by the Greenhouse Wing that gives you 2 respawnable bee nests! While on the other hand Windstead gives you infinite Fish via fish breeder, which in turn gives you infinite alchemical ingredients, like the overpowered salmon roe! that makes the most OP potions in the game!
The grain mill has to be the most disappointing one. You can put different fish items into the hatchery and see it grow, which is cool. Even keep tame slaughter fish. The apiary provides bees and honeycombs. Fits the aesthetic too. Grain mill = flour... Yay?
Has anyone ever just built a small house and leave it at that. I always end up building one as a small house, usually Winstad, an just build the outside stuff. Now there's plenty of nice looking CC player homes but I still build at least one fully built hearthfire house just for all the storage/organization it provides.
named timestamps throughout the video would be nice, especially when im coming back to this video several times just to find what a specific wing looked like.
So. . . Errr. . . I don't have a giant wall around my house at the same location? I wanted to build the three towers there as it gives a castle like vibe, and there's no option to build the wall?
Great detailed video once again. What followers do you recommend to become steward, while taking into account that there also need to be a few left to become Blades and marriage candidates?
I always add tough ones like Mjoll and Jennessa, I never use them as followers they're there to protect your property, Mjoll is a good choice as she's essential, but for example you could marry Mjoll and have jennessa as your steward, if you become thane then you'll also get a housecarl so your house will be well guarded when you're away ... glad you liked this one, I was in the middle of doing a hearthfire mod playlist when CC dropped new content but I'll get that up as soon as I can
I'll be doing that one next, I just want to check out the secret escape route, something seems a bit off with that and I need to spend a bit of time checking exactly how that works
In the smithing area is a pool, if you go down the ladder (or jump in) there's a tunnel entrance under the water that takes you out into the docks, use it and see what I was talking about, something seems off with it
I was disappointed to learn they all shared the same architectural style. It's too bright for my taste. See how it has no windows, but there's so much light inside somehow.
I've screwed up my entire chances of getting the trophies for the hearthfire dlc. I rushed in before watching a damn guide and now it's impossible (unless I play an early save or start a new game) to build the wings! Master architect trophie is what I am aiming for. Never thought I'd hear Jackfrags doing a Skyrim tutorial! Cheers!
It isn't a glitch. Randomly, one of the 3 houses becomes available near the start without doing the required quest etc.
I never knew that, thanks
@dike If you didn't have that one offered near the game start, you will have to complete a quest for the Falkreath Jarl.
