As a goth myself, at least around where I live, people don't really care too much about it. Goth is actually a pretty mainstream style over here. So is alternative and preppy. The wonders of living in the Midwest.
As a fellow Midwesterner, I can attest that this is true. When there isn't much to do in your little city, one tends to express themselves extremely, if only for the entertainment value. I also find that these cliques are extremely loyal to one another, more so than in urban areas, and just generally have a better moral compass overall.
As a goth person people do give me weird looks in public. I've had people give me extremely nasty looks and I've even heard people talking about me. And I'm genuinely goth. Clothes and all.
Yeah it's real. It's just... not like this weird panto lol ❤. Some people really do have a weird satanic panic thing lingering around and clutch pearls near you while you're just buying some milk.
Same. Have you ever had religious people approach you and insist on “Praying over/for you”. Like they act like they’re doing a mini exorcism. Its weird. I’ve had it happen twice
I live in LA and have identified as goth since the mid 90’s. I used to get all kinds of harassed back then. I had to throw away an expensive collar in ‘97 at an airport before they’d let me on the plane. I’ve been followed by security, kicked out of stores, searched unnecessarily… I was even kicked out of a gastroenterologist’s office after berating me about my inappropriate attire. I’ve been chastised, criticized, scrutinized, ostracized, scandalized, satirized all over the way I chose to dress and, honestly, it sucked. But that was a long time ago. Goth and metalhead here (but I'm from Germany, so I don't know how it'd be in America) ✌🏻 First of all, yes, you can consider her looks goth, because goth isn't just a clothing style, but a lifestyle. Our clothing and accessoires are wonderful to represent our taste and way of living, but it's also important to know that Goth is a subculture based on music. We don’t know whether this character lives like a Goth or just dresses like it, but either way I think the reactions in the video are a bit over the top. From what I've experienced there indeed are people who keep their distance and get suspicious, but there has never been an issue with shop employees or security anywhere. Depending on where you are people have become fairly open-minded and even compliment for certain items of clothing (especially when self-made) or makeup. Of course, there are also some dunderheads who ridicule us, but honestly, you don’t have to be a Goth to be made fun of

As a former security officer in the contract and corporate sectors, I can say that you are correct. A security officer is an agent of their employer, with the same power to arrest as a private citizen (citizen's arrest). The also can be sued for damages if they are wrong (unlawful detention, kidnapping, etc.).
I’ve been screamed “emo” at and barked at for wearing alternative clothing and makeup multiple times, (so has my friends) I would say that it depends on where and what country. But from my experience, you DEFINITELY get judged.
This is a very good example of how to present an issue the worse way possible. A little background from my side: I have multiple tattoos (they are well done and very pretty designs with animals and flowers mostly), I wore dark / alternative clothing most of my life, I have raspberry colored hair with an undercut, I love to wear dark make up with unique accessories and I love every aspect of my look and it makes me happy when I look into the mirror. But... Unfortunately I met heavily judgemental people who had mean comments on my appearance with no previous conversation. I had security guards following me around until I finished shopping and left the store (even though i didn't look this hilariously suspicious like the girl in the video). I met sellers in shops who didn't even listen to me that I was looking. One time for example I wanted a nice dress for an event and the lady in the shop told me straight into my face that I won't find anything there and I cannot afford it anyway while looking up and down on me with her eyes with "that" disgusted look (I found my dream dress in another store a few days later where they were super helpful and very nice btw). But happened before in a pharmacy, on public transport multiple times, on the street even and many other places as well and yes I met people who assumed I was the biggest criminal on the planet or "sinner" who needs to look more "feminine" to be successful in life. I was even spitted on once on the street and one guy stopped us with my friend to ask if we are part of a cult. And unfortunately you can have these kind of negative feedbacks unprovoked from family members as well or no support at all emotionally, no "safe space" which I think is a bigger issue than a random stranger making comments on your black lipstick. Fortunately though the world is much better when it comes to alternative appearances nowadays, but you can still find people who are not affraid to be heavily judgemental and usually in the most public places possible. I think everybody has the right to look the way they like and makes them feel comfortable in their own skin, also I never understood this behaviour because beside that it's disrespectful what exactly they expect? I'm very lucky that I can live and work in a safe and accepting environment now but that was not always the case. I hope the younger generations won't go through as much as mine did and they can express themselves freely.
As a citizen of Trinidad and Tobago, I am in need to inform you that KFC is basically a religion for us. We are glad you are joining this cul- i mean culture, thank you.
Actually here in the UK, goths get treated terribly. Back when I was goth, I was followed closely around stores, followed by people who would call me names and try to hurt me physically. I was humiliated in shops and fast food places, etc etc. It causes a lot of gothic teens to SH or experience suicidal thoughts. It made me an angry person who started to intentionally lash out at people. It caused me to have a mental breakdown and do something terrible to my own face..but I got better. I've had a much softer look since, such as pastel clothes and pastel pink hair. The pink hair still makes people stare at me like I'm a freak. The UK is horrible for judgemental people and horrible, badly brought up kids who can cut you to the quick with their words.
@@MYCLEM4T1S Yes, it's very sad and really horrible. The poor girl didn't even do anything wrong. The worst that could happen to a couple did happen: one survived and the other one did not.....
So as a former goth teen I can say I was stared at often and told I was going to hell but that was the worst I delt with. Most people stare and move on 🤷🏼♀️
Only to her Goth daughter, though, as it would seem. In the same breath she uses to defend Winnie (Goth daughter), she complains about how she wishes Becca (her non-Goth daughter) would be more like her sister and complains about how people naturally assume Becca's a good person (as if she thinks that if Winnie has to be endlessly harassed and judged, Becca should be too)
Found it ironic that Winnie was being discriminated by a member of a discriminated community, let alone that he discriminated her the same way members of his community have been and I'm guessing still are.
As a retail worker, we would 100% get fired for stopping random people thinking they stole stuff. Best case is they have something but you still could get fired for stopping them without a direct reason.

When I was in highschool, either my freshman of sophomore year. I was walking from lunch to the gym, a middle school girl started waving at me calling me emo girl (in a friendly way). I was so confused as to why and waved back tp be polite and went on my way trying to figure out why she thought I was emo. Figured it was my clothes which consisted of a black tshirt (don't remember what was on it) black jeans, a pair of combat boots, and a black backpack with buttons pinned to it. I wasn't wearing makeup and I didn't have an "emo haircut". Again one of my most confused moments .
7:56 OK SO I’m goth, and yes, people bark at me, call me dumb shit so yea they think it’s a big deal when I’m in my average fit But we are not stereotyped to be criminals
Goths are not painted as criminals but wow the amount of attention my sister gets for dressing like that, both positive and negative, is not an afterthought
Actually the looking around thing is a lot more normal than you might think. Especially when you feel like you’re being watched. Seeing how the goth gal is constantly being watched solely based on her looks, it’s no wonder she’s always watching her surroundings. Because if you’re being watched, it makes you feel uncomfortable. When you’re uncomfortable with something you’ll want to avoid the situation. you do bring up some good points as always though. I personally don’t see goths or emos as suspicious by default but I can only speak for myself.
Did nobody else notice that the security guard said someone stole makeup but the goth girl said “I didn’t steal any lipstick” when the guy never said it was lipstick, that just makes her look guilty.
Can we discuss how ironic it is that a black security guard is treating a minority like a criminal? Like no freaking way that just flew over everyone’s head.
I remember when I was in middle school till now I dress emo/gothic and when I was in school people will tell my mom that I dress like I worship the devil and I’m a bad kid. Workers do treat you like that but not even all the time depends where you are at. I experience but idk if others have. People still pick on people who are goth but the ones who do are the fake gothic kids and other “normal” people. I got made fun of liking the Wednesday show even if it was popular cause people joined the band waged and “liked” it. But it’s not that common to get picked on for dressing gothic or emo anymore but people still pick on you. Sorry for the long message I just wanted to put this out
when i go all out, wearing my victorian goth dresses and accessories i do get judged and looked at in a weird way but ive never had problems in makeup stores 😭
Fun fact, if anyone other than an ON DUTY police officer tries to falsely imprison you, you're well within your rights to physically defend yourself. That security guard would have gotten tazed. 😂
I'm not as goth as I used to be but back when I used to dress like that and had that sort of vibe people would sometimes treat me weird. Like I've been told multiple times that I come across at first sight as intimidating which I've always found so strange cuz I'm like the least threatening person unless u giv me a reason to be. I've not been accused of stealing at shops but I've had a couple weird experiences where this lady who worked at a shop was convinced I was trying to buy a vape when I wanted razors, they were next to each other behind the counter and she was foreign and I pointed to it as I said it and she got mixed up and even when I tried to tell her I don't want to buy a vape, she was trying to ID me and every time I had to go into that shop she would give me mistrustful looks. And I was warned by several people not to go to London looking like a goth cuz apparently goths get mugged. But I was a teenager and not taking shit I went anyway and had no problems, I think the older generations think it's a bigger deal than it is.
My friends and I both dress in darker clothes, and we went into a fancy store in the mall here where I live. Well, we kept getting suspicious looks from the workers, and when we went to leave the ladies at the front said she had to check our pockets. Neither of us had bags on us, so of course we turn our jacket pockets inside out and my friends mascara fell out. And they tried to pin us on stealing from their store, even though they finally realized they didn’t sell that brand of mascara. It was dollar tree brand.
As a former security guard in the uk im not sure how American security guards work but over here even if the EAS gate was malfunctioning we'd still ask to see a receipt in the customers bag regardless of how there dressed its policy to ask everyone for proof of purchase and explain for the inconvenience the alarm has been malfunctioning infact depending on company or shop it will be more of a reason to stop and ask people we always thank them for their cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience specially if its a shop that is targeted by shoplifters
Yes, this is still a problem. My aunt was going to throw away all of my black clothing because she said it would turn me into a school shooter or something, and my mom was on board with it. If it wasn't for my father stepping in and stopping them, they would have gone through with it.

As a punk person yeah there’s stigma around dressing that way. When I was in school, there was a rumor I was gonna 🔫 up the school. But literally nobody ever took it seriously like this. I had a million other stigmas put on me, so I really didn’t care. I was more concerned about being judged about being in wheelchair than judged for wearing a chain on my belt. You’re treated this way for being goth sure, but like only by immature kids usually. If you want to go for a more stigmatized style go for something like, let’s say, scene. Again, not awfully stigmatized. But more right than that.
What really bugs me is that this Dhar Mann video is implying that goth people go through the same prejudice as a black person from the 50's, which is baffling.

In my country store guards can’t even touch clients. Unless those clients are attacking someone. They can’t even touch person bags. Only look inside. I remember in my country my friend visited my small city and my neighbors were like “wow your friends have such cool style! They must be from capital city” (they are)). But then when they visited second time some old alcoholic lady screamed bad words at them. You never know with people. Some might judge people for gothic look or colourful hair. Some might be completely fine with it. But harmful stereotype is there.

The most I get these days is just the occasional stare. I don’t mind that at all.

Which is why i have learned Loss Protection doesn’t want to stop anyone at anytime.
I’ve been screamed “emo” at and barked at for wearing alternative clothing and makeup multiple times, (so has my friends) I would say that it depends on where and what country. But from my experience, you DEFINITELY get judged.
This is a very good example of how to present an issue the worse way possible.
A little background from my side:
I have multiple tattoos (they are well done and very pretty designs with animals and flowers mostly), I wore dark / alternative clothing most of my life, I have raspberry colored hair with an undercut, I love to wear dark make up with unique accessories and I love every aspect of my look and it makes me happy when I look into the mirror.

I love how she's not even goth
She was giving clean goth 😭
Yeah, the UK is something else, strangely enough. Then again, I think every alternative should know the story of Sophie Lancaster..

7:56 OK SO
I’m goth, and yes, people bark at me, call me dumb shit so yea they think it’s a big deal when I’m in my average fit
But we are not stereotyped to be criminals
Dhar mann clearly doesn't understand subcultures that well mainly because Winnie isn't even goth she just dresses alternative.
even the police wouldn't handcuff someone for stealing a lipstick, they'd just a warning and a slap on the wrist
Goths are not painted as criminals but wow the amount of attention my sister gets for dressing like that, both positive and negative, is not an afterthought
Worst part of the video was when the goth girl’s sister acted like she was traumatized by the situation so she could get free shit.
these twists are so insane and so subtle, i can barely tell when they happen😭
As a goth this pisses me off sm, SHE DOESNT EVEN LOOK LIKE A BABYBAT. SHES NOT EVEN TRYING

Can we discuss how ironic it is that a black security guard is treating a minority like a criminal? Like no freaking way that just flew over everyone’s head.
Black people can discriminate too
Black people are some of the most classist folks i have ever dealt with. I wish I was kidding. So I believe it.
As a metalhead for 25 years I can confirm that 100% people judge based on looks.

He's a real one
I would agree with you. Yeah I used to be a Dhar mann fan. Dhar mann is really getting boring.
