  • Some people know her as Amy Farrah Fowler from The Big Bang Theory or as Blossom, but Mayim Bialik is also a neuroscientist, mom, and a self-proclaimed aspiring “super Jew!”
    Here she is to break down what you need to know about the Jewish holiday, Sukkot.
    Sukkot is an eight day fall harvest festival that comes just a few days after Yom Kippur. As Mayim will tell you, it’s a bit of a strange holiday (“stranger than not watching TV on Shabbat” and not eating “pulled pork and crab”). Jews typically erect temporary huts outside and invite friends to come eat meals inside of it. Also, Mayim will explain how Jews go to synagogue and wave around a collection of leaves and grasses (known as a lulav) in all directions. Oh, there’s also a weird little lemon called an etrog. Enjoy!

      I still remember when you made a vlog of you and MANFRIEND making that tent on you backyard deck patio back in 2017. It's funny in a way, because when I had a dream about you and MF in December,2017, I was like who is this guy!? He's HOT! So I went and cross referenced alot of you various vlogs(GROKNATION, UA-cam, FACEBOOK, etc.) and like low and behold there he was walking across the deck and opening up that storage bin that you keep the tent parts in. I saw you try to but it together last year on INSTAGRAM(?), and you look like you have a tough time doing it. I guess being (5'-4.5") buts you at a disadvantage. I'm (5'-9.5") by the way. I read somewhere that the ideal height difference for male/female couple is 5 inches.......I'm just saying.....you know....Penny for your thoughts.

    I love her down to earth explanation of things. She is a treasure. As a "Ben Noah/ friend of the tribe" who observes some Jewish holidays and shabbat, she helps me with the "why" questions. With her being a scientist, it really bridges the gap on some things. (In my opinion). This helps me think about full conversion.

    I don’t think this holiday sounds weird at all. Especially after you explained why the different aspects for the holiday mean what they do. It could be said of any religion that their observances are “weird”. We don’t always understand what is not our “normal”. This seems like a nice way to be grateful for food harvest, spend time with family and remember that in the total of creation we humans aren’t the end all be all.

    I was browsing a bargain basement store that sells Amazon returns and found what I thought was an outdoor bamboo mat. Printed on the cardboard box was “Sukkah” and since I had never heard of that I looked it up. And now I’m here learning all these interesting things about another culture and there is nothing more fun than that. Thanks for sharing your heritage.

    This is a comic skit about sukkot from an outsiders point of view. Actually, Sukkot is a deeply religious time when the Lord comes down and tabernacles with His people after passing judgment on them from Yom Kippur. It's a time of rejoicing and yes, they pray for rain because as an agrarian society the rains come over the winter months. The Songs of Solomon talk about them too.

    a bit more Sukot for you : The Ushpizin:
    Avraham left his homeland and arrived in the Land of Israel.
    Yitzchak encountered enemies as he wandered over the Land of Israel. Yaakov fled to Haran, returned to the Land of Israel, and went down to Egypt.
    Yosef was sold by his brothers and wound up in an Egyptian prison.
    Moshe was hidden in a basket in the Nile River, grew up in Pharaoh's house, continued on to Midian, and returned to Egypt.
    Aharon his brother wandered together with him for forty challenging years in the desert.
    And the life of David was full of wars and rebellions.
    Our forefathers lived transient "Sukkah" lives without permanent homes. But despite all their wanderings and trials, they built and improved themselves in order to teach, to educate, to do good and so became significant figures, powerful and eternal. They did not put everything on hold until "after the crisis", until "after the corona". Just the opposite.
    They understood that the time is now, that life is lived within the maelstrom. Instead of waiting for peace and tranquility and then begin to do great things, they knew how to focus on what was important even while the world around them shook and trembled.

    Actually Shmini Atzereth, the 8th day, is Biblical. In Israel no one dwells in the sukkah on the 8th day. The dwelling in the sukkah only lasts for 7 days. The 8th day is a separate holiday which is actually celebrated indoors.
    Outside of Israel you have actually added a ninth day, Simchat Torah, which actually doubles up on the 8th day, Shmini Atzereth.

      Hey Katie! I’m not sure by your comment, but I hope you mean to share the video for educational purposes and not for you all to participate in the holiday yourselves, as that’s become a common problem and is offensive. I know a lot of Christians get interested in Judaism because Jesus was Jewish, but he would not have participated in the holidays we celebrate now and our culture has changed a lot since that time! Educating others to be understanding towards Judaism is so great, but it’s also important to understand that Judaism and Christianity are completely different, and Jesus would not have celebrated how we currently follow Shabbat or any of our holidays and customs. I’m in TN and we have a lot of churches visit on Shabbat for education, and that’s great! :) I would suggest, if you’re able, to attend an actual synagogue (when it’s safe) or get in contact with a Rabbi as that’s the best way to help educate on Judaism and also have the opportunity to ask a Rabbi questions. I hope my comment does not come off as offensive towards you, I’m just unsure on what you’re intentions are for bringing this into your youth group. In the South I’ve noticed a lot of churches tend to pick up on our Holidays and will visit synagogue for education, but only for them to go off and practice our things on their own which is not right and extremely offensive :/ Also, I’m not sure what area you’re in, but around here we have several nights a year where our Rabbi, an Imam, and several Christian clergy members will get together to discuss certain topics (my favorite from this past year was on Angels in the different respective religions), and that would be a great thing to attend and bring members of the church to! I think most synagogues have something like this (at least where I’m at), but if not it’s a great thing to start up with a local synagogue (and mosque)!

    • @honeybones5028
      @honeybones5028 3 роки тому +1

      I hope you didn’t take any offense and I hope I read your message right! What I was meaning is sharing videos is great but doesn’t give room for questions that can be answered by someone Jewish actively there, and it’s best to make a visit to a local synagogue or attend an open discussion night to really be able to have Christians and Jews engage in active dialogue and discussion about Holidays and how things have been translated and interpreted in the Torah and bible! :)

    You know what would be really cool is for "Sheldon and Amy" to do a series like"Fun with Flags". He starts with the Fun With Flags intro and says he's sad, you ran out of flags. What can we do next?
    Amy says you can help me Jewish holidays, but he's resisting. You tell him a little about Hanukkah, and he says "That can't be right" But, Amy has a Parallel Bible with Hebrew and two other translations. "Look, Sheldon. There it is, in plain Hebrew, Greek and English!"
    "Oh, I'll never understand. But you know what?" "What Sheldon?!" "Hang on now, don't be angry. I don't understand. But. I'll help you by asking questions about religion because we ran out of flags." "I love you Sheldon." "Oh, I know." 🖖

    Mayim, I enjoy these videos very much so thank you!! Would you be willing to talk about the role of the Rabbis in Jewish culture? I'm under the impression that religious writings, such as the Torah, need some context to be properly interpreted. It's my understanding that Rabbi's study that context and offer guidance so the true message isn't lost. I do worry that some people read everything literally which leaves room for a lot of dangerous misinterpretation (this may not be such a problem in the Jewish community?).
    Also, I was raised Christian and I don't understand the relationship between the Old Testament of the Bible and, say, the Torah (which I believe is only the 1st 5 books of the Old Testament). I'm having trouble understanding the Talmud as well. Do you know if the Old Testament stayed true to the original Jewish books?
    If you find these requests unwelcome, please let me know and I'll cease. I mean no insult.

      @shayndlgreen3356 3 роки тому +1

      Thats a great question! Most people misunderstand the role of rabbeim (rabbis). A rabbi is just anyone who has rabbinic ordination which means you have studied a certain area of Jewish Law and have passed tests to show your competence. If you want to pasken (interpret the laws) there is a lot more study involved. This is why are are some differences in adherence among the sects of Judaism (chassidim, misnagdim, sefarfdim etc.) HOWEVER there are certain rabbis who have come to be known as experts in their fields and their word is usually accepted throughout the Orthodox world. For example - ashkenazi women will typically cover their hair with a wig while many sefardim don’t hold by that ruling and will cover their hair with scarves.

    • @shayndlgreen3356
      @shayndlgreen3356 3 роки тому

      Your question about the Talmud is a little more complex. The five Books of Moses, the Prophets and the Writings are the Tenach - Old Testament. The Oral Law was ALSO given at Har Sinai but was passed down orally rather than being written down and codified. The Talmud is an explanation and expansion on the Torah. There are many Mitzvos (commandments) that were given but there was no explanation on how to observe these commandments. For example - it says to “afflict your soul” on Yom Kippur but we don’t know exactly what that means without the Talmud, but it also says if you don’t the punishment is death. Maybe that means standing on your head. This is how we know the Talmud was given at the same time as the rest of the Torah. When the great Talmudic scholars realized that the Jews were going to be exiled they wrote down and sealed the Talmud and Mishna so it would not be lost. The rabbis today use the Talmud to pasken (rule) for example - when electricity was brought into homes the rabbis studied how electricity works and realized that these devices cannot be used on shabbos because it causes a spark which is forbidden. This ruling applies for all sects of Judaism regardless of denomination. (Note - a local rabbi could NOT make a ruling like this. It would typically be left to the Gadol Hador - the greatest Talmudic scholar of the age. Today it would be Rav Chaim Kanievsky in Bnei Brak Israel) I think there is a great misconception that rabbis can make up what the rules are. This could not be further from the truth! Everything is sourced in the Talmud and major decisions like the one about electricity are heavily studied and debated before reaching a decision.

    • @shayndlgreen3356
      @shayndlgreen3356 3 роки тому

      Lastly (and I apologize for going on so long) I just wanted to address your question about the Talmud like I said before - the Old Testament is just another way of saying the Bible. It includes Torah, Prophets and Writings or Tenach as it is more commonly called. The Talmud was the Oral Law also given at Sinai. I stress this because I think it is one of the most misconstrued aspects of Judaism. And it is also the difference between Orthodox Jews and secular Jews many of whom sadly do not believe in the divinity of the Talmud. Thanks for your question and your patience!

I don’t have anything but palm fronds either. Can i celebrate like,,, spiritually or something? It’s not like i can just ignore my parents and do whatever i want. Should i though even though I’ll probably get whooped

      I recommend getting involved with your local synagogue. My family was very reform, and I was the only ultra orthodox in my family once I decided before my bar mitzvah even. I celebrated Sukkot at my synagogue, helped them erect the sukkah there. Surely your parents would be ok with that.

      Rachel Grabowiecki respectfully, I’m not Jewish. I would consider myself that follows Christ, but part of that is recognizing that the Torah is an amazing thing and should be a light to us. Along with the amazing feasts and traditions. Along with learning Hebrew which a lot of Christians don’t bother to do, there’s so much more meaning in those words that our English translations could never capture. Thanks for letting me know and giving me suggestions:)

    Strange? And the Rabbi fights with the Cantor (often a revered tenor, not the regular guy) over the Prayer for Rain, because the whole furshlugginer thing is umpteen dozen and squeventy verses long, and the Rabbi wants to get back to the service, and...
    Every year. And they've been having this fight, reminding us that the bimah is a stage, since before the Romans left town...

    My biggest concern is how to learn Ibreit. I never was by-lingual and do not comprehend it. (I am now 70. Is there even a chance?)
    I would bet that you are at least trilingual.

    Just love her too. I wish she would talk slower so I could hear everything she says. She presents her religion so very well. I would love to talk to her, when she is not in a hurry. So funny and interesting. If you are ever in NC please contact me I'm on the coast, not far from Myrtle Beach. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

      Of course you can! Anyone can convert to Judaism if they honestly desire it. You need to see an Orthodox rabbi to undergo this process.

    What torah did you get invite the spirits of your ancestors into this tent with you? I am pretty sure that in Deuteronomy it says have nothing to do with people who talk to the dead in any way shape or form. Deuteronomy is in the tour correct? it sounds to me like what you're talking about is some kind of new age Judaism that has nothing to do with the true heart of being a Jew. Yes Jews live by rules because that's the law that God set down however unfortunately no one and I do mean no one that is a human can live up to all those rules period this is why the Messiah had to come and die and pay for our sins I would suggest that you read the Torah go to Isaiah 53 and you will find it the story of Jesus is very real and very clearly told in the book of Isaiah. I would suggest that you ask God to take the blinders off so that the truth of who Jesus is can be revealed to your heart because he is the Son of God and he did lay down his life so that all could be forgiven he is the one and only true Messiah.

    Circumcision is not for no reason at all, it is for the biggest reason of all, it is a command of God and the males mark of Abraham's covenant, to be one of the descendants not cast out🙂😉
    The jewish holiday is not as God gave it to us as shown in Exodus and Devarim/deuteronomy. Succoth is 7 days.
    Devarim/deuteronomy chapter 16😉
    13 “You must observe the Festival of Shelters[c] for seven days at the end of the harvest season, after the grain has been threshed and the grapes have been pressed. 14 This festival will be a happy time of celebrating with your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows from your towns. 15 For seven days you must celebrate this festival to honor the Lord your God at the place he chooses, for it is he who blesses you with bountiful harvests and gives you success in all your work. This festival will be a time of great joy for all.
    16 “Each year every man in Israel must celebrate these three festivals: the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Harvest, and the Festival of Shelters. On each of these occasions, all men must appear before the Lord your God at the place he chooses, but they must not appear before the Lord without a gift for him. 17 All must give as they are able, according to the blessings given to them by the Lord your God.
    The reason I show this is also to see that adding to God's already perfect 3 festivals is not kosher and the sages violated the law.
    Deuteronomy 4 New Living Translation (NLT)
    Moses Urges Israel to Obey
    4 “And now, Israel, listen carefully to these decrees and regulations that I am about to teach you. Obey them so that you may live, so you may enter and occupy the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. 2 DO NOT ADD TO OR SUBTRACT FROM THESE COMMANDS I AM GIVING YOU. JUST OBEY the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you.😉
    We may not speak to the dead, we may not at all.
    Deuteronomy chapter 18
    A Call to Holy Living
    9 “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there. 10 For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering.[a] And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft, 11 or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you. 13 But you must be blameless before the Lord your God. 14 The nations you are about to displace consult sorcerers and fortune-tellers, but the Lord your God forbids you to do such things.”
