Cooper Rugged Trek VS Mickey Thompson Baja Boss Tire Comparison

  • This week I've got a tire comparison for you. I'm comparing the Cooper Rugged Trek VS Mickey Thompson Baja Boss. The first thing you notice when you see these tires is how similar they look. That’s because Mickey Thompson is owned by Cooper which will soon be owned by Goodyear, coincidentally. Cooper actually calls the Rugged Trek a Rough Terrain pattern but I call it a Hybrid. Both tires compete directly with the Goodyear Duratrac, Nitto Ridge Grappler, Yokahama X-AT, and Toyo Open Country RT. The Best Applications for this tire are jeeps, trucks, and SUV’s that spend most of their time on road but like to go mudding or off-roading on the weekends. Both have features that would make them perform better than a run of the mill All Terrain tire but not as good as a Maximum Traction/Mud Terrain tire.
Let me know if you would take the Cooper Rugged Trek or Mickey Thompson Baja Boss off-road in the comments.

Matt is probably the best tire reviewer on YT. I've watched enough of guys who don't know what they are talking about and not even prepared to show the country of origin or size or 3PMSF emblem. Then I've watched this silly guy shouting and yelling in a dark basement without enough lights to see the tread. So amateur. Matt is low keyed and personable and knowledgeable. Wish he was in my town and I'd go to his shop for all my tire needs.

Just installed a set of Mickeys on my Ford F250 6.7 diesel this morning. Ok, any new set of tires will feel smooth and quiet as they have a full tread compared to worn treads. So the Mickeys are quiet and smooth on the 15 miles I put on them after I had them on. I'm sure they will crush dirt, snow, gravel, mud, and grass all-day long.
Edit: I've had them on for about 3 weeks now. So far, still smooth and quiet. We haven't had snow yet but I have no.doubt they will be super. Plan to go to either Monument Valley or Jackson Hole later on so they will run through snow or snow and dirt.
I was able to drive to the most remote town in the loeer 48, Jarbidge, Nevada. I drive out from Southern Idaho, running 40 miles on paved asphalt before it ends abruptly into dirt track for 20 miles. The dirt road wasnt anytbing bad, well graded, but had some step sections going to Murphy Hot Springs. Thr tires gripped very well and i was in full control at all times. I drive through miles if switchbacks woth no sliding and raised my confidence several notches. No drama and basically a non event to Jarbidge and back.
We had some snow over Thanksgiving and Christmas. Nothing big, just maybe two inches and slush on the hardtop. It gripped fine. I coukd break the rear loose if I tapped on the 925 pounds of torque from the dieselgl8ng around corners but it held in reasonable driving without any drama. Not any test if deeo snow yet, but i have no doubt it will not let me down. The ride is quiet and continues to be well mannered even as i drove 700 miles to california coast and back.
I think I've found the perfect all terrain tire. Thanks for your great review.

Great review of the tires and especially the comparison between them. I didn’t know Goodyear was going to purchase Cooper. Keep up the good work and make more videos, maybe one on balance and how different ways to use weights for different types of wheels with or without tpms, correct inflation for tire size. Some people don’t have paved drive ways for chalking. Thanks for helping and all the glory to the creator!

I put on the new Cooper Rugged Trek on my truck 3 weeks ago and have been off-roading every weekend here in the mountains of Colorado. First of, these tires are super quiet on the highway and provide an extremely smooth ride. Off road has been great. We've been climbing up and down logging roads and off shoots at 40+ degrees and the tires get us right up the path with limited slippage. I was quite impressed. I highly recommend trying these tires much more then this guys "low try".

I was at my local tire shop today getting tire's for the car. Sitting right there in front of me was a 275/60r20 Rugged Trek. For those who may be interested in this tire, it IS 3PMSF rated....at least in that size. I'm in Wisconsin and will be looking much harder at this tire seeing it's 3PMSF. That said, I'm pretty set on the Mickey's.

Great review, thanks. Here's my thoughts. Pick up is a 2018 F150 Screw 6.5 box w/ Rancho 4.5" lift. I went from the Falken Wildpeak AT3W to the MT BAJA BOSS. Both sets 35x12.5 20, also both are 12ply. First thing is the Falkens are a great tire, quiet, good traction on/ off road. They out lasted any other tire I've ran by atleast 2x and I've run lots of different brands. I run alot of gravel daily, about 200 miles each day. If not for worn ball joints the FWP tires would have no doubt lasted another few months. I average about 3 months on a set of tires. The FWP had 40% tread after 6 months. Unfortunately they cupped and developed vibration issues. My fault, not the tires fault. Took awhile to source parts for my front end.
Because the FWP were unavailable I went with the MT BB. So far I'm impressed by the ride, grip and noise although they like to chuck gravel. I'm on Canadian Rocky Mountain roads and the constantly changing terrain requires a tire that will adapt quickly. Ice, snow, gravel and asphalt, I get them all every day.
I find the MT's are a little better on ice / snow traction than the FWP. Time will tell if the MT's will out perform in wear, I'd be surprised if they did.

It seems that Cooper Tires is releasing not-too-expensive off-road tires in exchange for their off-road features. The Evolution M/T and the Rugged Trek tires are made not to replace the STT Pro and S/T Maxx but a cheaper alternative to those who do not need the super serious off-road capabilities and the Armor-Tek3 sidewall protection. (Powerply and Armor-Tek3 are the same) Probably, in my opinion, Cooper is starting to cater to customers who, dare I say it, wants have their trucks look tough but do not go off-road. Don't get me wrong, these tires can perform off-road.
Thank you for sharing your insights and observations, Matt! Greatly appreciated.

The MT’s come nicely rated for weight and is fit with a ton of tech, enough for 15 tons more. I’ll be sending 6 of these as I expect their sidewall to handle Texan rainy season just fine. I had not considered this brand and had actually not remembered it yet and your review jogged the quite old memory. Thanks!

Running 295 70 18 Baja Boss AT on my 2015 Duramax. First week in I'm so impressed with ride quality and noise. These tires are amazing so far. We have been getting alot of rain lately and wow again, with traction and braking is outstanding in rain. Towing my 32 foot rv feels great having smoother ride, now just to see how they last..

More info: I came from running 295 70 18 Toyo Open Countrys At2. They got noisy and hard rubber after 3 years with 30,000 miles on them. My truck road so rough and always ran my tires as low psi possible with annoying tire monitor. That was 55 front and 60 back. Also wet traction was scary always put in 4wd in rain. I had 8/32 from & 9/32 tread life and just had to buy new tires. Very happy I with The Baja Boss at, it's for sure a huge upgrade. They ride so much smoother it's amazing, it night day difference. I’ve been shopping around for quite some time for a nice off-road tire and preferably three peak snowflake rated, i’ve been focusing in on Mud tires like the Cooper SST pros Hankook Dynapro MT and an Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MT, but none of them have the three peak snowflake rating which I think would be nice to have on my next set of tires for when the snow starts to fly. and I believe the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT is going to be about as aggressive tread pattern And depth of 18.5/32 with keeping the three peak snowflake rating that I’m going to find, think I’m going to give them a try. If anyone has any info or comparing any of the four tires I just listed feel free to Comment.

Hey Matt.. another Great review. I have had the RT, Ridge grappler and now the Yoko X-At. I went hybrid for better off road grip when pulling a trailer onto the jobsite and in the snow up north trips. The X-AT is not snow peak rated but handled it just fine. When I hit around 20-30k miles on these Hybrid they start to get a little loud per my liking vs my AT tires. The X-At and Ridge Grappler have been my favorites for all around. The Cooper looks less aggressive and might be the quietest vs the others and might be closest to an AT tire. Do you test any tires on a truck. Thanks for the reviews.

@@CampusautoCo okay well thank you for taking the time to respond. The Aussie off-roaders seem to love Maxxis. I would love to try this Baja Boss AT, just a little concerned how much the 80-lb weight of a 37 x 12.5 x 17 might affect my JLU Rubicon. I’ve been leaning towards getting a relatively lighter 37 such as the Grabber ATX, Cooper AT3 XLT, or just upsizing the KO2s that came on it. Thanks again for your knowledge and expertise. I love your channel. Take care Matt.

They are super heavy but I think that is a strength plus they might be targeting custome HD Trucks. Aussies know their stuff. If you lose a tire in the outback, you might die! Thanks for watching!

@@CampusautoCo you’re hilarious🤣. Definitely don’t want to get stuck in the outback. So would the 37 inch Baja boss AT be too heavy of a tire for a JL Rubicon to daily drive without causing too much wear and tear or completely killing driving/braking performance ?

This is the review that I tried to submit to Cooper but since I compared my Discoverer At3's vs the Rugged Treks and I had some issues with the AT'3's they wouldn't allow it.
I wouldn’t normally do a review with only 1000 miles of use so I will come back down the road to update. The reason I am doing this is because these tires have exceeded my expectations in cornering especially in off camber turns as well as wet driving in comparison to my previous tires the Discoverer AT3’s. I was able to drive with confidence for over 50 miles this week while having downpours from Hurricane Ida in NJ at speeds up to 65. My old AT3’s were horrible in both the corners and rain. They were so bad in rain I was afraid to go above 50 on the highway because they hydroplaned. This seems to be the exception but was my experience. If the Rugged Trek’s perform well in snow I will have hit the trifecta of tire attributes that mean the most to me! I had used p275/60 r 20’s for the AT3’s and now am using the LT 275/65 r20’s for the Rugged Treks so with the almost 2” taller profile, 1/2” wider width and almost 20pounds per tire increase in weight I did lose about 2mpg which is to be expected but the other performance so far exceeds my previous tires I am fine with it. Oh and the pictures in the description don’t do these tires justice. They look great! I actually had a friend ask if I got a new truck! LOL!!!
