This is a really good and informative review. It’s balanced and considered unlike many of the other reviews I’ve seen. If you take into account the excellent build quality, the superb display quality, the higher brightness, plus all the extra features, it’s clearly a high quality monitor with an expensive, yes, but still reasonable price tag.
The biggest problem is the Studio Display isn't as good as my MacBook Pro display. I think they hit the wrong sweet spot and bundled some features in there that most studio pros don't care about, all to hit a higher price point. Extra processor with webcam? Nice speakers? Most will already have better speakers in the studio, like reference monitors. I know I do. They should have removed the speakers and processor and hit $1000, or made it $2000 with no speakers/A13 and had a mini LED that matches the spec of the MacBook Pro.
Another reason for they extra thickness of the frame is due to the internal power supply. You can only make a power supply so thin. Apple did not want a external power brick so they redesigned the power supply.
The Studio Display is disappointing. The new MacBooks have better displays than the Pro Display XDR despite being a lower price. I think people would've been really excited if Studio Display was $1999 but had MiniLED and 1000/1600 nits.
Studio Display is awesome, pricey but having 5K resolution with true 2K retina it is: FINAAALLLY! And no who ask for 32" or says 4K is the same, simply don't understand how retina works.
I think the reason no other manufacturer offers displays with high-quality aluminum enclosures and other premium design features, is that Apple somehow was able to stop them from doing it. They probably told LG how they wanted the UltraFine 5k monitor to be so it wouldn't compete with future Apple monitors that were in the pipeline.
what about samsung? apple can't stop them , still they are creating ugly plasticky gamery 4k monitors , the market doesn't care about quality product just only small percentage of mac users so there is no need for the other companies to create high end 5k displays
i doubt that. few companies have invested in metal tech the way apple has. it's a signature material that they have been perfecting and iterating on for years.
gotta admit that they look DAMN good. can gaming monitors out there get any uglier? can everyone adapt to, if not Apple's, at least dell's minimal design? not every gamers want space ships on their desk
To be honest, most people dont care how nice a monitor looks on your desk. They are using a monitor for the screen 99% of the time. I do agree though, a lot of monitors are ugly RGB vomit.
Have noticed - very subtle albeit - shadowing across the monitor of the studio display, more so toward the edges. Especially noticeable in the highlights of moving images. An easy test is to move the window around quickly if Premiere Pro, or Lightroom. Again, minor issue to most, but concerning as it appeared to be a part of the image at times.
Awesome comparison Max!! I wish Apple would elaborate more on the specs of the ASD. Been looking for monitors to go with my Late 2021 16" MacBook Pro M1 Max for over to weeks..... no luck. Everything I've looked at has a mixed bag of spec's for my needs for FCPX. The ASD is looking more & more desirable everyday. Only thing is if a jump on it, Apple will come out with something nicer in the spring.... As always, Thank You for all your hard work!! 👍😊
Nice job gentleman, I am very pleased to have picked up a previously owned Thunderbolt Display for $300 in excellent condition to use with my 2019 MacBook Pro and my 2017 iMac . My anticipation for the newest iMac is palpable 🥳🥰🙋🏽♀️!
You still didn’t mention response time and refresh rate , it looks like you’re not allowed to talk about it, but now I got it I will go with LG ultra-wide, it is less built quality and PPI than apple’s but way better form factor, response time and refresh rate
it would be great if apple made a studio display that was 32 inch. maybe next iteration. having tried a number for 4k options i finally saw the light and got the studio display. total game changer.
I have been saving my money to buy a 5K 27" Studio display to replace my 2K 27" Cinema display on my M1 Mac Mini. I should be able to spend the $2,000, with the better stand, in about six to ten months. That would make my purchase around February 2024. I can't afford $6,000 for a monitor.
I'm just disappointed about the contrast ratio of this display. I wish further development could go into the neglected 5K panel, as 1040:1 is just really lame by today's standards. As I write this, I'm using an Apple display made over a decade ago -- and it has a contrast ratio of 700:1.
A lot of people hate on the studiodisplay but it is actually a really good value! please keep making mac studio content, your's is way more in depth and unbiased than other youtubers
I'm really not a fan of Apple's trend toward making speakers that are more bass heavy and quieter. I will take natural clarity and overall power over boomy bass any day (bass seems like a crutch to cover up bad sound). My 27" iMac had nearly perfect sound for a built in setup. Has anybody compared the loudness to a 27" iMac? Like if an iMac was 10/10, how loud is the Studio display? Btw, that webcam is terrible for a monitor of this price with a built in a13 CPU in it! Apparently Apple says they are aware and are working on a firmware fix. Should be interesting. Also should be doable UNLESS they put a really crappy sensor/lens in it, in which case no amount of software tweaking will fix it.
I'm holding out for a new 6k 32" solution. In the meantime I'll just use the Studio mac with my old 27" 5k iMac -- I just need to figure out the best way to hook the iMac for display-only purposes.
i thought they took that function away after apple realized they were losing money on the display market? Let me know if you find a way, im very interested in this
@@purplekrakenyut Yes, Apple removed the option when the 5k iMacs were released. I believe you can "screen share" though that would require using the iMac as a computer as opposed to a dedicated display. There's also Luna Display, but not sure how well that works.
@@purplekrakenyut That's pure BS. Do you have insider knowledge that this is the reason? I mean, how were they "losing money on the display market" when they make no retina displays (until this month)? If people were buying entire computers to use them as displays, Apple would probably think that's fantastic! Especially since again, Apple had no displays on the display market to lose money to.
@@garfieldirwin The reason target display mode was killed was because at the time (2014) there were no cables with enough bandwidth to drive a 5K display.
@@77dris I honestly don't know, but there's little doubt Apple could have rectified the situation with a little engineering work. Guess it just wasn't a priority for them.
I saw something about someone suspecting that Apple may make an external GPU. If so, I would expect that to be put inside this monitor. It would basically allow future iPhones or iPads to be your laptop and the “dock” to hook you into heavy duty power as needed.
I’ve been breaking my head, no one is mentioning the wattage output of the usb-c ports? What is the power? If I would like to charge my iPad pro simultaneously? Thank you in advance for the first repliers!
I myself don’t have the equipment to test the Studio Display’s port wattage, but I can make a logical deduction. Bear with me here. We know that Apple says, with the Studio Display, “you can even fast charge a 14 inch MacBook Pro”. Now, from various sources, I’ve found that the 14 inch MacBook Pro draws 73 W in order to fast charge. That means the Studio Display can deliver at least 73 W of power. However, Apple doesn’t say that it’s capable of fast charging a 16 inch MacBook Pro, and those draw more power (and come with a 140 W adapter instead of a 96 W). So we can assume it can’t deliver much more power than that.
Anyone who would enjoy a cheap dell monitor will not appreciate this display. Anyone who would appreciate apples design and build quality won’t care about the price. It’s a hit for sure.
What else is new in 2022, just a bunch of winey babies complaining about the price of this new monitor. The "my $300 4K monitor is BETTER" crowd simply don't get it.... You need a 5K panel to properly scale 2560x1400 x4 to get "retina" clarity. Too many people say "eh, I don't care..." but I have bad eyes and NEED the clarity and I can't imagine how somebody wouldn't notice the difference. It's a HUGE difference if you ask me. So the 4K is only an option if you're running at 4K not in HiDPI mode or scaling at 1080. Yes, the LG is cheaper but actually looks like crap side by side, not to mention the ghosting and cheap plastic and wobbly stand. Of course though, the 5K iMac was probably the best bang/buck that Apple ever produced, but for someone like myself who uses Mac Pros (or Mac Studio) this new Studio Display is legitimately the BEST option, PERIOD!
@@Watchandlearn91 this is why is getting so tiring watching all these UA-cam videos that basically for the most part seen the same all the time. It comes down to need. Didn’t know about the data speed limitations of the XDR. That was really useful! I really liked the larger size of the XDR, but with data speed and built-in speakers, the studio display seems like a much better monitor for almost everyone since we aren’t looking at HDR content most of the time we are using the computer. It’s not like the web or any software/app interfaces use it. I like the accurate colors and image quality and the sharpness, but realistically, I could also just be fine with 4k 32” probably and less accurate colors and less color depth.
My question which nobody has been able to answer yet. The studio display has 3 x USB-C at 10Gb/s, fine. My question Is; can you use one of these ports as a 10Gbe Ethernet and if yes, what adapter is to be used?!
2:17 most monitors these days come with matte coating pre installed so i think you meant lower contrast + less reflectivity. Glossy = more reflectivity and better contrast. Look up Dave2D's eve spectrum monitor video if you want to see the comparison. Yes that means apple charges extra couple hundred bucks to add matte coating while the entire monitor industry does it out of the box. Meanwhile, PC gamers would love more glossy monitor options but some reason, they decided to completely get rid of it but hopefully it'll come back. There are a few glossy office monitors though but not many.
What Apple does is not a coating, and not as coarse as a traditional matte treatment. They etch the glass surface itself, to break up reflections without introducing the image quality compromises of matte plastic or an additional layer of coating. That special process is why it costs so much. But the cost of adding it is more than I would pay.
@@onbquo you should check side by side of the apple displays. Their "nano-texture" makes the image quality look worse than the cheaper glossy model. it does downgrade the image quality
@@brightboxstudio Even if apple has their own method of creating these anti reflective displays, the end result is the same which is less reflective + worse image quality. I will always go for the glossy over their anti-reflective since it's much cheaper and has better image quality
@@loldatfunny There are major differences between a matte screen, a glossy screen, a glossy screen with nano-texture etching, and a glossy screen with anti-glare coatings. They cannot all be lumped together, because the end result is not always the same. Matte loses the most contrast, glossy has the most glare. Glossy with etching is effective, but too expensive. Glossy with the proper coatings is a good compromise between contrast and glare, and the coatings are NOT all equal. I have held up different phones against glossy laptop screens with different coatings, and some are much better than others.

Same panel can have different brightness level in different TV. For example, Sony QD Oled TV is expected to be brighter than the one that are being produced by Samsung, and both use the same Samsung panel. This is due to a heat sink that Sony is using in the panel. The simulated HDR is due to some software tweaks and the A13 Bionic. The Mac Studio base model is the best deal.
If you bought more than one Studio Display to have extra real estate, will audio play from all of them or just the primary one?
You can configure it to your desire.
Another reason for they extra thickness of the frame is due to the internal power supply. You can only make a power supply so thin. Apple did not want a external power brick so they redesigned the power supply.
Thanks For your awesome quality content and insane dedication,I love your videos,Keep up the amazing work🔥🙂!.
The Studio Display is disappointing. The new MacBooks have better displays than the Pro Display XDR despite being a lower price. I think people would've been really excited if Studio Display was $1999 but had MiniLED and 1000/1600 nits.
@productivity and…?
Imo the biggest minus is the 60hz refresh rate of the Studio Display... I would have bought it but 60hz is simply underwhelming
For games...maybe. Everything else should be fine. With that said, with the price of the ASD I do agree, it should have had a higher refresh rate.
Would it be a good deal to buy a 24 imac m1 instead of a monitor for macbook pro max?
Haven't even watched the entire video, but this is the video I needed to watch today! Great work Max + Team!!
Thanks Mark!
lmao 6:29 😆😂🙌
I just wish the studio display was 32 inch
Sudio display is a real 10 with a LUT? Adobe RGB colorspace is 90%?
Thanks!
Hi Max, do you think Apple will release an update Pro XDR display in June? I'm really looking forward to that!
I heard it was gonna be 7k.
Fantastic review guys. I’m on the fence and this is tipping me to the 5K
Who is the Mac studio for?
Thanks! Just the kind of comparison I was looking for.
Thanks for review, where did you buy that t shirt?
How the ... you managed to make the blacks of the XDR to look grey?
Wondering if I can live with a 16” MacBook instead of a 27” (currently iMac) just so I can enjoy gorgeous hdr movies
🔝🔝🔝 Congratulations you've won today's random selection, text me now I have something for you
Great review. Can you also add the speakers' URL to the description?
I can't find that awesome wallpaper in you library... Wait they have to be purchased?
Those future iPhone needs to ditch lightning connector if they gotta be used for a dock.
You’re thinking too much
Tada!@@AndersHass
@@dskidz99 now they just need to use a standard that can handle PCIe tunneling lol
Still waiting for the updated Pro version
Saying it's the best options it's really not saying much. Considering you need 5k you only don't have many choices
@@Watchandlearn91 this is why is getting so tiring watching all these UA-cam videos that basically for the most part seen the same all the time. It comes down to need. We got an XDR in our studio because we could do that because we could pay for it by getting more business. That being said the majority of people will be fine with a 4K monitor. People that need the 5K could do this one and probably be okay with it. Or if you going to Apple referred store right now I’m going to 27 in Shai mac for 1299 which is an insane deal if you don’t mind using intel for the next 2 to 5 years. In The end it all comes down to need. People will chase tack and not improve their skills. Get the best you can and what you can afford or invest in yourself and buy something maybe you don’t think you can afford and go get more business
@@Watchandlearn91 Then that's why there are other monitors for people don't NEED 5K. It's like the 4K crowd would rather this monitor don't exist, which would screw us guys who NEED a good 5K display. It's like a car guy saying trucks don't need to exist.
@@Watchandlearn91 People can use 4K all they want. I have them too and they are frustrating compared to my 5K's. What resolution scaling are you using, or just running natively at 4K without scaling?
@@Watchandlearn91 Doesn't sound like 5K is too necessary to you. I spend about 50-70 hours a week in the studio on mine and feel physical eye pain when running 1440p scaling on a 4K. Apple 5K doesn't strain my eyes. I'd pay more than $1,600 for this new screen if I had to.
The dealbreaker for me is that it is a 27" screen.
As I´m used to a 32" (a Philips) the step down is a bit to far.
Hi is there a USB thunderbolt hub so I can run 3 x studios displays with just one cable to my MacBook Pro m1x
Why not add touchscreen to it, now that its powered by the A13??🤔🤔🤔
Thanks, I am buying XDR
So iPhone 11 and this display use the same chip, how does that explain the difference in thickness? I mean what kind of explanation is this.
🔝🔝🔝 Congratulations you've won for today, text me now I have something for you.
Great job man, you made my mind up.
MaxTech please upload in 30fps or 60fps
uploading video in 24fps is sooo low, video stutters
My question
Is; can you use one of these ports as a 10Gbe Ethernet and if yes, what adapter is to be used?!
COMPARE THE NEW SAMSUNG GALAXY BOOK 2 PRO 360 WITH MACBOOK AIR 2021
What speakers did you get
2:17 most monitors these days come with matte coating pre installed so i think you meant lower contrast + less reflectivity.
It's not a matte coating. What Apple offers is different and also many matte coatings makes image quality suck.

Almost 1M subs, Max!
Great review
Strange that it doesn't have a power button. You have to unplug it to turn off the display.
I guess you can spend 400.00 for an adjustable height stand, 90.00 for a riser, or .25 for a book at a garage sale.
This monitor is just 2014 overpriced tech.
Studio display is too small. I’m using a 32” display, which is much better than dual 24”.

There’s two of you! Never realised!
How did you connect the speakers te the XDR.
Studio display here I come
Does anyone know what software he uses to check how hard the cpu and gpu is running
In my opnion, it's clearly Pro XDR is a little bit better, the problem is, it's not a little bit expensive, it's MUCH MORE expensive. I think Studio display is enough for 99,8% of people, even video editors
Where can I find the little monitor shelf that you sed to raise the monitor? Thanks!
The studio display is NOT a 10 bit panel. It's simulated 8 bit FRC. It's the biggest difference in cost and you should know. Try to find true 10 bit panels under 2K, I dare you.
I love how He doesn't compare the studio display to anything but an Overpriced XDR and 5 yr old LG. There are much better options out there in 4k. Also the webcam and speakers still definitely don't compare to dedicated devices. Especially the webcam. The stand options where height adjust bumps it up to 1999 and non user removable power cord have no reason. But it gets an edge being 5K, and APPLE design, but its a niche product and I wish Apple had a monitor providing value to the majority.
Thank you. This is disappointing. Apple is literally driving up prices for no reason and harming their best customers. So sad.
@@zt9233 Yes and APPLE messed up so bad that MAX tried to justify it by Inflation. But an important rule in manufacturing is that the Production costs decline as Time goes on, Apple sells its older Iphones for cheaper for the same reason. For some reason, this rule was conveniently ignored by MAX.BTW they are not harming all of their customers, apart from a small group who needs a 5K regardless of the Price, there are also people thinking of it as the Cheapest APPLE display they can get for their desire for APPLE products.
The internet: “There are much better options when you……. Lower the PPI by half, Lower the colour accuracy, reduce the brightness by half, put a flimsy joystick under the display complete with ancient OSD control, drop the professional design and change to a gamer teenager look, etc. Etc. @@jackyharuhiko what are you talking about? There are 500 dollar monitors out there with 170 ppi, 10 Bit 99% sRGB color accuracy, 500 Nits etc. Obviously worse but also 1/3 the price. Yes, build quality is much worse but who cares most monitors are against a wall and you rarely see the back of it.
@@jackyharuhiko Everything is not a gaming monitor, for Example Dell Ultrasharp is really good professional monitor.
Since it's been 2 years, I wonder if Apple will treat the 6K Pro Display XDR like this new 5K display but instead of putting an iPhone's internals inside of it they put an iPad Pro's internals inside instead. I'm REALLY needing a new iPad but I just have this feeling like they're going to update the iPad Pro this year and it might make more sense to wait for the update and then pick up a cheaper last gen iPad Pro or cough up the dough for the newer model if the upgrades seem worth it. I wanna see that M2 goodness!!!
Compare the Asus proart displays with mini led, they have a 32" 120hz version
🔝🔝🔝 Congratulations you've won today's random selection, text me now I have something for you
@productivity You are correct, It's mini led and 120hz which could be a good pair for laptops with high refresh rate mini led displays such as In the 14 and 16 pro
After you get it and have some time with it, you realize how epic it is. My calculations put each inch of height adjustment with the stand is around $100 (4-5 inches), and I'm so happy I paid the Apple tax on it. With the stand its the coolest thing ever; PAY to get the stand and like this video, its a mini XDR in many ways. For a dual monitor setup and a laptop to the side too, its a great size.
For these prices, both of them should be touch screen and apple pencil compatible
