Firstly, i really don't think 4k vs 5k really makes a difference on a 27" display. Secondly, you can't just charge double the price just for slightly better built quality. Samsung and Huawei really make high quality displays.
Function over form is my funda.

I currently use the Cinema screen (1440) which I purchased 11 years ago when I moved away from Windows. I purchased an 11” MBA, wireless kb, trackpad and mouse. It has all worked flawlessly for 11 years, it all still looks new and modern. I am about to go to M2 MBA and 27” Studio. I paid $1000 for the Cinema Screen in 2010 and never regretted it. This new 5k is about $1600 which is about the same price in constant dollars and I don’t need to fiddle around with add on camera, speakers, mic etc. It is all there. I will turn 80 soon so this might be my last set up. I am sticking with what has served me well. The 5k will be great for my eyes. I have seriously studied the Dell 2723QE 4K which looks very nice too but in the end I will use this for a lot of years as I have my last set up. Now I must find a use for my Cinema Screen! It is still awesome and like new still. The Intel MBA (3 years old) already has a new home ready. Really enjoyed your review. Well produced and very helpful.

I still use the 2007 30" Cinema display -- with windows 11 (and 10 and 8 and vista and xp and 2000) and it works great! Never in the last15 years have I missed having any control over the display. It has been flawless and no matter how often I look at the studio display or the pro display, I have to say, why would I?

Update. It turned out that the head of school at our church school needed a computer upgrade so she got the entire set up, monitor, MBAir, kb, trackpad, mouse and optical drive. It was exactly what she needed. I got a deduction!
My M2 MBAir plus Studio monitor and new peripherals all work so well. I added a Samsung SSD as my Time Machine. The monitor sits on a low level aluminum base which includes more front facing ports for USB A and C, card reader etc. it’s really a perfect set up for me. Update: I paid nearer $1300 for the monitor. Got a “refurbished” deal from Apple.

Waking them up, plastic, poor speakers etc. I really wanted a monitor that was plug and play, with no fuss on the Mac. My favorite setup was always the 17 inch MBP and the Apple Cinema Display. This basically replicates that for me with a 16 inch MBP and the Studio Display.

There is a big issue with the display that reviews have not yet addressed. No its not the unacceptably horrendous webcam. The issue is that the monitor runs its own operating system (IOS) to manage the camera, microphone and speakers. Like any device running a consumer based operating system, it can't be run indefinitely without restarting it or you run into issues. If you don't restart your iPad or iPhone for weeks or months you will eventually experience all kind of issues. I got my studio display on March 18. yesterday my camera started acting up, then the microphone and speakers would stop working sporadically. After hours with Apple support it was determined the monitor needs to restart. BUT there is no way to do it, it has no power button and no way to actuality shut it down or reboot/restart properly. So the only way to do restart the display is to unplug it from the power source for a minute and plug it back in. We did so and its working fine again. However, doing it that way means you are crashing the build-in OS rather than properly restarting it. That of course can potentially damage the display just like crashing your computer every time you want to restart it.

great review, the display is nice but honestly, for a screen in 2022 there should be more. 27” it’s too small, normal IPS it’ too old tech. bleeding should be a NOGO in 2022… i really hoped at least for a 30” display for the price of 1600$. The built in camera & spatial audio sound system is not the reason why i would buy this. sure, apple discontinued the 27 imac so they needed a replacment, thats the reason why you get a cam & a soundsystem in this screen. Apple makes more $ with this strategy, buying the mac studio + mac display. i was really excited about the display but thats too expensive and a too small screen with too old tech. if i need 3 monitors for my macbook, why should i buy 3 screens & all with built in cam & speakers.. that makes no sense…. i just wantedt a bigger screen for my macbook from apple for a fair price. discontinuing the imac 27 was not a great idea..

27" is totally fine, not too small. And according to you, Apple shouldn't have released the Mac Studio and Studio Display since it overlaps with the 27 inch iMac instead replacing it with an Apple Silicon 27 inch iMac, and then people would crying for an Apple branded display and the mythical standard desktop that sits between the Mac mini and Mac Pro. Is that what you want, right?

    @wingsley 2 роки тому

A lot of valid criticisms here, but whether internet commentators approach this from an Mac-centric point-of-view or a Windows-centric one, there are a few key items that a clearly missing from these reviews: (1: There's talk of how there are many other aftermarket alternatives out there, but there isn't really detailed coverage on 5K (or 4K) high-quality Photoshop-level monitors with VESA-mounting options and the ability to pivot 90º for use in "portrait mode" (great for DTP work). (2: if you want Apple's VESA-mounting option, you have to choose it when you order; you can't VESA-mount a monitor that's ordered with a standard mounted. Not mentioning this is a major omission. (3: There's also no mention (maybe there should be) of how using a non-Apple monitor with aftermarket accessories (add-on webcam, desktop speakers, headphones) can actually be a better setup. I've been thinking about LG's 32UN880-B 32" UltraFine Display Ergo, which isn't 5K but still has the ability to pivot. I could then add a webcam and speakers, and probably have a comparable setup for several hundred dollars less (and probably throw in a good desk arm for VESA mounting).

I'm really confused by the reactions to this/its price. It's basically the 5K 27" panel from the iMac that everyone's wanted, but in a nice Apple enclosure for $300 more than the creaky plastic of the LG Ultrafine. There's not really any 600 nit, 5K displays that compete with this price, are there?
Sure, ProMotion 120 Hz would have been nice, but is that even possible? HDMI 2.1 which has more bandwidth than Thunderbolt (48 Gbps versus 40) tops out at 4K 120.
Mini-LED at this price point would be unheard of. Samsung has a QDOLED monitor coming out, that's only 30% as bright (250 nits) and 30% the amount of pixels (1440p versus 5K). The only mini-LED desktop monitor I'm aware of is ASUS' which is 4K and costs $4K. 4K is also a decent step down, 8 million pixels versus the almost 15 million in 5K.
Monitors are just in a rough place right now. Laptop and phone sized panels have amazing tech at great prices, but right now decent monitors are just expensive if you also want high resolution. I know gamers prefer high frame rate, but I don't think that's most of Apple's market (they've said developers are their largest pro market, and I'd certainly take resolution over frame rate any day).
A 5K ProMotion 120Hz mini-LED version of this would be like, better than the Pro Display XDR in almost every way and likely cost around the same.

It doesn't serve MacBook/Mac mini users since it is too expensive, and Mac Studio users don't get HDR or high refresh rate but get speakers and a noisy webcam in favor of Center Stage which is less useful on a desktop than a tablet. Seems like Apple just didn't want to make a larger iMac but wanted to charge that same price for the monitor minus the mac, keyboard and mouse/trackpad. Great build quality but too expensive and a feature set that doesn't really address any segment of mac users perfectly.

This monitor has 218 PPI which is the same as most of the Apple computer displays (XDR, Macbook displays, this one etc.). macOS is finely tuned only for this PPI, everything below will look noticeably worse because Apple is not applying any text anti-aliasing anymore as 218 PPI is sharp enough for clean text. This "choice"/limitation is what makes text macOS looking ugly at other PPIs (even on 4K 27''). This means that if you want external monitor with a clean, crisp text on macOS you're limited to this as an entry-level monitor (+ old LG Ultrafine 5K). This also means that your monitor will look much better (the text clarity/sharpness, not monitor itself) on Windows and Linux than on macOS.

Thank you for elaborating on the Studio Display’s usability with Windows. Any workarounds for changing the brightness of the display? Max brightness would be unusable for me, even as a Mac user primarily. 😞I have a Magic Keyboard. Could I plug that into the back of the display to change the display brightness while on Windows? Just spitballing.

@The Tech Chap: PLEASE HELP!!! Sorry I am repeating same comment in all your videos. But it's urgent. All i do is competitive programming on some websites like Hackerrank, leetcode and Codeforces. I also watch Netflix and prime. I am looking for device with decent battery backup, comfort and portability, AND NO HEATING ISSUES whether I am keeping the device on table or on my lap or inside a blanket. It's performance and DEVICE TEMPERATURE should remain stable whether I am in my living room or in my toilet. I HATE HEATING OF DEVICE. Now which device would you recommend.
    1.iPad /Pro/Air 11 inch or
    2. Macbook Air or
    3. something else.
    Please once again my priorities:-
    1. NO HEATING( Not even if there is an apocalypse). My skin s sensitive to my current laptop. And I swet and develop rashes when it's temperature rises, I am unable to keep on my lap or on my bed for more than half hour and I hate it.
    2. It should be highly portable and comfortable to hold.
    3. Decent battery backup.
I WILL BE REALLY REALLY GRATEFUL IF YOU CAN GIVE ME A SOLUTION?

Was considering this. Using a MacBook myself and a Windows machine for work. But the brightness adjustment issues on Windows mean this really isn't suitable for me.
I have a separate webcam anyway. But I thought it would be nice to have everything integrated in the monitor. And not just the webcam, but also good speakers and a USB hub. I'd happily pay a premium for the Apple build quality as well. But I was already on the edge considering the price (was browsing Facebook Marketplace to look for used ones), and then the brightness issues make it a no-go.
The LG UltraFine 5K also seems quite popular. At least, prices for used ones are also quite high. So.. not sure about that either.
Guess I might end up with a 4K screen instead.

If the studio display has the A13, either it hasn't been optimized or it isn't as good as the A14 chip in neural engine/ISP tasks.
The new M1 chips should have the bandwidth to able to that processing to the display.

Apple should have axed the internal speakers and camera and the A13 chipset and upgraded the panel to a 1000nit and 100-200 local dimming zones for 1599-1999 dollars. Studios already have speakers and webcams! Apple matched a display for casual home users with the fastest small Mac ever, not a good idea. If Apple wanted a display for the casual Mac mini or macbook users it could have been the same panel as the M1 iMac.

5K is 77% more pixels than a 4K monitor. Until literally any other manufacturer starts caring about pixel count and density, this stands alone as the only option for people who want that crispness. Some people just really want more pixels. Your ultrawide has size and specs, but less than half the pixels of the Studio Display. In a day and age when people are buying higher megapixel cameras every year, it’s weird to me that creators don’t seem to care about actually seeing those pixels on their screen.

Dell and Iiyama did care, they have offerings of the 5k display available at $699 based on the exact same LG panel. They've done so since 2017. IIyamas even comes with the front glass and aluminium build if you can find it in your market.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider 2 роки тому

@@Thetechchap As far as I know, the only other current 5K monitor is the $1299 LG, and the only other major manufacturer to attempt at a 5K monitor was a $2499 Dell. 5K is just not a mass-market part and hence difficult to do it for cheap. Like I said, it's nearly twice as many pixels, so everything needs to be beefed up considerably. Also, 120 Hz is impossible over TB at 5K resolution, as 5K is so much more intense than 4K that it is still at the very edge of what mass market technology is capable of with current standards, which is why it's expensive. If they did 5K w/ HDR and mini-LED, it would be a great monitor, but that would be a $2500+ monitor, and at least at $1599, some people might buy it. Whether it's right or not, it's a question of do you want shiny new display technologies, do you want greater than 4K resolution, or do you want something that doesn't cost in the same ballpark as the Pro Display XDR? The market shows that you can have at most two of the three, and I feel like this product should be evaluated in that context.
