Apple went out of the way to engineer the power cord to not be user removable and also engineered a special tool to remove it.
That's what Apple does best
Classic Apple.
Apple; The best company at sucking every penny out of their customers. And I'm one of them

@@user-mz3ni8yu4v u love their products so much u dont mind they treat their customers like crap?
I'm surprised they didn't offer a 'Studio stand' with cutouts allowing you to place the Mac Studio on the base of the stand and thread all the cables through it... for $399 extra dollars
Why Not $999🤔
"Sir, you're hired."
why any power cable at all? why not go beyond, and let it be powered by the thunderbold/usbc and no need for power cable at all.
@@sebastianjuppscharwachter9022
$999.99 + California tax, so that'd be around $1240.99 for a stand..
Don't give these ass-hats at Apple anymore ideas.
@@KermitOfWar That's the funny thing. That's what apple did with their prior stands a few years ago lol
I think Apple fixed all of what they consider mistakes from the last display. Removable cable, removable stand, vesa mounting, any user repairability or customizability that might have snuck through
what do you mean, there is a VESA option that - unlike the PRO XDR - does not cost extra
Yet they've added it to their user repair program.......hmmm
@@reginaldbowls7180 their user repair program is as good as banging your head against the wall, this has been proven by pro repair technicians over and over again
Well, they should've soldered the power cable so that it's definitely not removable. Also, it shouldn't work with a Windows PC.
@@Chopper153 No. If it didn't work with Windows, then they should be sued.
As a professional photographer & filmmaker considering this product for my production team, this definitely helped me make the decision to NOT move forward on picking this "studio" monitor up yet. You made great points on the features that you'd expect in 2022 for the price range....and Apple has delivered an underwhelming product on this one. If you have a bunch of cash to burn, this might be a fun purchase. Otherwise, you can move the needle for you and your business a lot more by investing the same money towards something else.
What monitor are you considering that has the same color accuracy for a lower price point?
I'm running windows. I ordered the Asus PA32UCR-K and should have it by the end of this week. Its essentially the cheaper version of the UCX. I couldn't find any reviews of it, so will see how it goes. I just hope the quality is great all around. The specs looked great given that I won't be doing much gaming. Mini led, HDR1000, almost 100% coverage of the core gamuts (sRGB, Adobe RGB, DCI-P3), very accurate, etc. Hopefully the lack of reviews mean everyone is busy being productive with it.
@@johnolin are you joking? There are tons? The Huawei Mateview does the same and it’s a 10 bit panel lol
Get a 4K Eizo, never look back.
@@the_irav The only Eizo I could find that was close to having equivalent specifications as the Studio Display is the Eizo CG2700X. It's 4k instead of 5k and maximum brightness is a little lower, but it does have built-in hardware calibration and that hood would be useful. However, it is twice the price of Apple's Studio Display. The Eizo would look good on my desk, but work wouldn't pay for it 😕
I love how he's avoiding "It's not a good deal" so hard and I was almost angry that he's so diplomatic, just to end the video with "No, it's not a good deal.". :D

@@SF-li9kh It doesn't suck, it's just not worth the money

Yeah I was so irritated by the lengths he was going to to make excuses for Apple. Like you can make those same excuses about any terrible product... But then he finally admitted at the end that it's not a good deal.
The nonremovable power cable is absolutely absurd. They actually went out of their way, and spent R&D money, to design a new, worse cable when they already had multiple options for something good.
@@sys-administrator Just like iMac? an already working design? Or like literally every other monitor in the past decade? I can't remember any monitor other than old CRTs having non removable cable
@@sys-administrator This comment screams "I don't know anything about tech other than what's shoveled directly to me as true".
@@sys-administrator The option to remove and - if need be - replace it without having to take the entire monitor to an Apple store which around here requires an appointment and a couple hours of my valuable time. How would I have designed it? I would not have too. Because it has already been done. In fact Apple has done it. They actually went out of their way to make it harder on their customers. Wow. Design can have value..... Poor design can destroy it.
they definitely just want more people signing up for apple care. somehow just using a proprietary connector that allows the monitor to be extra thin wasn't enough because that would mean people could just buy a new or used cable and not have to pay apple to swap it out.
@@sys-administrator 6:55 question's literally already answered in the video.
Thank you UA-cam algorithm for sending me Marques. Your reviews seem to be truly unbiased, sharing the good and bad in a very clear, concise way that I really enjoy. Well done sir!
Great presentation and I agree with the fails on no mini-led, no ProMotion, power cord not removable, stand not upgradable, poor quality web cam, and no Face ID given it has a A13 chip even if it was used for 2FA. I also think they missed an opportunity to have multiple monitors work in tandem with audio and possibly even the web cam. This is the company that comes up with great useful features, although neglects a lot of them, and this crazy expensive monitor really only has some trivial additions. It's like the team that designed the Studio Display was designing the old MBP which took away man things Pros, and frankly even general users, wanted while not long ago a different team created the new MBP with things Pros do want and the Studio Display team ignored it all. This display is the victim of the same thing that gave us the Touch Bar. i.e. Apple ignored it, then had to come up with something to say they weren't ignoring the Mac, look the new MBP, it's all the things that no one asked for or wanted in a MBP. Yes I'm aware that had some exaggeration. However, I equate these things to the one button mouse desuional logic which is like a virus Apple can't cure, it always pops up somewhere. Frankly $400 for a single not uncommon function is where Apple shows itself as a greedy corporation like that $19 display cleaning cloth or the $1000 stand. Yes people pay for elegant designs, but there is a point when you're just milking customers because you can. If the stand had more of the functionality of RA-HS3111, which lets you control the position of a monitor in 3 dimensions independently, but they gave it Apple style and the one thing missing, fine tune height adjustment, I'd be OK with $400 - $550. There is actually another thing missing from the RA-HS3111, a quick release at the VESA connection to the monitor, but I've given up on Apple making monitors or AIOs with removal stands.
Thanks for the sanity MKBHD!
and i wounder why?
the display could cost 1k more and the same audience would buy it.
maybe even more if it came with all the premium stuff people with this money expect of their products...
Apple marketing logic:
"We don't send chargers with the iPhones anymore, because of environmental reasons."
"If your power cable breaks, you have to send in the whole thing!"
(I would even consider myself a fan boy. But some stuff they do makes me puke. It's just greedy.)
Maybe it's the green agenda that resulted in this decision. Thoughts go like this: Because previously they said power cables were not included due to waste concerns, this monitor they made it permanently attached in case someone tried to call them out for including a power cable. "But it's permanently attached, we had to include it!" 🤦
I have a 10 year old Thunderbolt Display on my desk, the power cable is in perfect condition (as are the other cables, which are known to crack). I've never had to disconnect it from the back of the monitor, even when moving the monitor between office and home and back.
@@fmarinosfromafar9512 ok
Yes it is after all consider your a new Mac user in the U.K. and you purchases the top of the range Mac Studio for example for £3999 and get it home only to find that all you get in the bus is the computer and a power cable.
You them go back to the apple store and to get a screen, stand, trackpad, keyboard, mouse and of course they then force you into purchasing the apple care, so that’s another £2065 (for the basic screen and stand) you have to pay and nearly £3000 if you want top of the range.
What a rip off…
Lol du hier xD
The fact that the M1 iMac 24in with a 4.5k display exist for $1,300, which is a full computer makes this a terrible deal. I was at an apple store and my sister said "So this display is more than that computer? That makes no sense".
Exactly, and the iMac 24 really is very capable!
Don’t worry, Apple will fix this problem…By raising the base price of an imac to 2000$
hey i am not that into tech but why would people buy a 5k lcd monitorsfor this much price instead of 4k oled as in general oled has way better colours
@@mac.fk14 just to flex. and say look at me I have a apple product I’m rich 🤑

thanks for such a honest review! I keep my late 2013 imac for now..great colors and experience even if its not even a retina....(but costs only 10%)
I like mine. I agree about the power cord - don't know why they couldn't have used the same design they did with the new iMacs - with a magnetic closure. But it works great with my Mac Mini, I like the additional USB-C ports and it's worked out great for me.
Unremovable cable is ridiculous, it's almost like apple wants right to repair regulation to come into law. It truly serves no purpose
They literally engineered the most satisfying power connector I have ever used in the M1 iMac, and they decide to not use it
I think sometimes they just intentionally make some aspect of their product design completely ridiculous just to get free exposure and coverage. Because the monitor is otherwise so unremarkable, it has ended up being the most talked about aspect of the device.
@@diverman1023 not only did they decide not to use it, they went out and spent money to develop, test and build a completely different (bad) solution.
This didn‘t save them money, it cost them money, that is the insane part.
@@liamness I'm convinced this is the case, same as the $1000 stand (any serious user would just get the VESA mount, but the publicity is priceless)
Apple neede to be fined for this
The old 27" iMac retailed for $1799 and had the same identical panel (just a 500 nits instead of 600) as the Studio display which costs $1599. For an extra $200 you got an entire computer plus keyboard and mouse. The price of the Studio display is ridiculous, shouldn't be more than $1000.
Yep, Apple has dramatically increased the price of getting an equivalent machine as the now discontinued 27" iMac.
The thing is, there’s an entire Apple silicon computer in there. It just can’t compute
exactly, you know they're making even more money off of this than the iMac FOR SURE and they're hoping their fans just eat it up. And honestly? A lot of them are. I've seen way too many "this is such a good monitor oh my god" videos considering just how bad this monitor actually is. They usually have really weird conditions about what is good and what is bad like plastic makes a monitor unusable, if it's not 5k instead of 4k it looks pixelated lol. It takes a real weirdo to really prefer this monitor above other options
@@EricLS They really should've given it like...Apple TV capabilities or something. For it to have an A13 and 64GB of storage onboard and not be able to do that standalone is ridiculous
or get $700 wheels
Thanks for this video! You did a great job dumbing it down and keeping it engaging! Are there other monitors with similar specs that have built-in speakers? I have a weird desk setup and the thought of adding more cable clutter to it with speakers is enough to make me go with the studio display.
No display speaker is as good as a real speaker. Unless you don't care about sound quality.
You got my thumb’s up on the last sentence. 😂 Great review.
It seems like Apple is testing what people are willing to pay for at this point… the fact that it costs nearly the same as an iMac 5k did is laughable.
at this point?
i thought they were doing it on purpose like 3-4 years back…

At this point? This is what they always do, the sheeps are still buying, so no problem for then

Love your commentaries. Thank you
LTT summarized the Apple Studio Display pretty nicely - "an LG Ultra Fine 5k Display Expensive Edition". 😆
ok
and also "less practical"
Haha, fully agree, the Pro Display XDR I would say is actually worth the money but I can't keep the same statement for the new studio display.
The LG is literally only $300 cheaper and it’s built way more on the cheap with it being fully plastic with no metal or glass. Plus, when you watch videos side by side, the Studio Display has way better color accuracy and contrast.
So yeah, it’s the same thing for $300, and that extra $300 is used to make an inherently better display and experience.
Without the removable Power Cord
I love the brutal honesty in this one! 👊🏻 Without ProMotion and mini LED, it’s a hard pass. And that’s a shame, because the monitor itself is beautifully designed. It’s a very “Apple” product, I suppose.
4K pro motion option with mini-LED would make more sense for a $1600 display to me but maybe that's asking too much? Spending $1000+ on a display in 2022 and seeing that terrible contrast rubs me the wrong way
With those two things alone, the money wouldn’t be able to fly out of my wallet fast enough. Seriously. I would pay the $1999 for the height adjustment ability and all.
they always left out something purposely so it can be an upgrade for the next model
@@NuggetsXInfinite the LG 4K 144hz display is the same brightness as this, has way higher frame rate, is similar in color accuracy, and does have support for hdr 600 and has local dimming. All for 800. This is a horrible deal in all but it being 5k and pretty looking.
Hate to disagree, but it’s an easy pass. So easy I’m not even thinking about it I’m just buying it. Yes you could buy the LG 5K monitor… But as I said in another comment, if you sneeze too hard it’ll shake rattle and roll. It’s built like crap. But if you can recommend a monitor to me that is way better than this monitor that isn’t made out of plastic crap… Please let me know so I can consider it.
Thank you for this Video @MKBHD because I was on the fence and didn't know which way to go!!!
WOW. I am a fool for thinking that the adjustable factor came with the display..only for you to say its a $400 upgrade fee associated to have it do that..I'm floored lol. I highkey was thinking of getting this to add to my apple eco-system lol, but after watching this, I am definitely going to be thinking this over for a while. THANK YOU for your honest review!
This video perfectly shows my main BIG problem with this monitor (and some other decisions apple made in the last years). Everything that stands out as particularly "great/good" are things that don't actually matter for the monitor as a monitor. Build quality, feel, a build in UI with a good chip, good speakers... all nice, but everything that matters for the actual product as a MONITOR is just not good enough for the price (and the add-on prices) Apple is asking for. Yes it feels good, but i almost never touch my monitor, yes it sounds good, but for a desktop i always use external speakers or headphones, yes it's well made (except the cable), but i never had a monitor breaking because it's plastic... what i actually want in a high standard productivity monitor is amazing peak brightness, a higher refresh rate for more pleasant reading and scrolling (let's be honest, gaming is not what apple is focussing on), an amazing panel with accurate colors and close to the best blacks and maybe some comfort features like tilt, swivel, height adjust and rotation if you don't put it on an arm... and none of that is what this monitor stands out for.
It honestly feels like Apple spend tons of time and money to develope a shiny new product with lots of features, but failed to develope the core feature set to a point that actually feels well done. It's like a bog standard monitor with with some Apple-Glitter slapped on it.
I don't even think Apple spent too much time on this one, given that users have already reported problems with their web cams.
Thanks for writing, so I don’t have to do it again - 100% with you on this one, the power Cable, yeah I get the point, but I never broke on, and if you buy 1600 worth of display pets should not be allowed in the room or trained well anyway. - Most likely it’ll be a work space. Bazels are something I might add. To bis for these days, and the hole display is do much, because of all the features I don’t wont. iPhone 11 had a small footprint, for being a phone, better cameras and a okay-ish speaker. Why the hell is that display so thick when the stuffed a whole computer in the iMac 27” and even less into the 24” inch?
cool, good for you. build quality isn’t important for everyone, just because it’s not for you doesn’t mean it’s not a good product. I’d prefer to have a better built product that lasts longer! ♻️
@@calebjankola8728 Great how you managed to completely misinterprete my comment... congratulations.
I never said, and never will say that build quality isn't important. It definetly is, very much so. But this is not "better quality", it's more material waste without any other purpose than to "look good". It's a "good-enough" monitor for money you pay for a "very good" one, because it's shiny and cool. There are tons of monitors with less features and "worse" materials, which still have amazing lifespans, don't break, have replaceable stands and cables AND are much better monitors... and without a mediocre webcam, storage and a chip, a fixed cable and "good-enough" speakers that will end in a landfill once the monitor is dead. "♻" (if you honestly believe this product has to do anything with the environment and cycle lifespans you are dumb as bread, sorry)
My complete comment was about Apple setting the wrong focus for too much money. I didn't say anything about quality or that i don't like the superb machining, but it's a dumb monitor. It failed to be the core product it's supposed to be, for materials and features that don't really matter.
I disagree. There is no other 5k monitor with the built in features at this price point.
If you take into account the $400 stand option for height and tilt adjust, you find yourself comparing a $1999 monitor with a $1299 and $589 option.
I got a 27" IPS, 144hz display (with a stand!) for fucking 130€. I don't care how well Marques argues for 12 minutes, people who buy Apple products are getting robbed hard, and consenting through the whole thing.
Agreed. I run two Dell 27 inch curved monitors, both height adjustable, tiltable and easy to remove stand for a VESA mount. Both cost a combined $450. I get it, people who need color accuracy for their work cannot use what I'm running but Apple charging a premium for basic QoL features is robbery.

Amazing review. Literally I don't need to do any more research now. I won't get it for now because I need the money to pack all the juice I can into the mac studio. Funny how the Dell alternative you listed only cost around 100 bucks more than the stand upgrade for the studio monitor. So that killed it for me. I'm a big fan of the apple design functionality and I couldn't have put it better my self when your describing apples combination of unique features on products. For this to be a good deal, I think it'd need to be 120 Hz (or higher), have height adjustment in the base model, a better camera (not necessarily an excellent one, but something better than that), and of course a removable power cord. Considering Apple's done all of this before I don't think that's a huge ask, it just needs to be put in one device

@@rodrigojds that’s how Apple operates. Churn out half finished hobbled garbage, next year the S version gets another essential feature that the competition had 5 years previously.

So basically replace everything "special " about it 😂😂😂. Might aswell cancel this product. it doesn't need to be 120hz , it either needs to be a better panel (brighter with better contrast) , and has to have basic vesa mount & cable not magsafe just a removable cable and stand . I have one of these, mainly because apple colour on the screen is really accurate if you work in print like I do. I wish they would have given us just 2 more inches though, it does feel smaller compared to my old iMac 27 because that was taller. Great review, thanks

This has been my fundamental problem with Apple's design philosophy through the dark ages (butterfly keyboard era). They're intentionally choosing to under-design a product that _could_ be insanely competitive despite the fact that they'd still be able to line their pockets if they just made something better. Every power user is just going to be resentful of the limitations here despite them being the very demographic they're targeting. They finally made Macbook Pros a legitimately compelling product again, and this feels like a huge step backwards.
How are they selling an _entire_ Macbook Pro with better screen tech for $2k and then turning around and selling this monitor for $1600? Their pricing/spec philosophy is conflicting with itself. Sure, it's a "nice" monitor overall, but the design decisions to get it here are clearly shady and minimally competitive. Ultimately, I hope this product fails so that Apple does better next time. $400 for a few inches of height adjustment? Get the absolute fuck outta here. Just _make a great monitor_ and charge the typical Apple price for it.
Issue is that they got halo product that are there to make lot of money, like the mentioned MacBook. Then they got this display that they know will not sell a lot and is just there to say that it exist, that use repurposed components from their others device. Like the 1000$ stand or wheels, this is a design statement and if some dumb rich minimalist buy it then that's an added bonus. We are there comparing price, they are just waiting for that one guy that only know one store, the apple store.
@Male Sensitivity the entire M1 lineup (at least the M1 macbook air and pro) have all been shockingly good value, or at least worth their price if used to their extent. This monitor simply does not meet expectations for a studio monitor in 2022 as Marques states. It fails to produce a display beyond the basics (60hz LCD IPS) excluding its 5k resolution.
@Male Sensitivity The stand(s) and power cable are blatant shortcomings that very clearly have profit-driven motives behind their design. They're 100% anti-consumer and sacrifice actual usability/flexibility in favor of predatory pricing and repair practices. You could argue that for almost any of their products to some degree, but the last few years have generally been an upswing for the value of their lineup. The new MBPs and iPad Air have been actual showstoppers, which makes this monitor feel that much more egregious by comparison.
Yeah Apple has a serious problem beliving it is a Botique design company. When it is a tech company that focues on making tech for non tech people. How ever it doesn't necerly wants to limit it's profit to the 1% it also wants their prices to be low enough for meanstream or even the poor in 1st world contries to buy them.... Basicly Apple has no real audence on paper yet it has Apple fans and are 1 of the reachest companies dispite their lack of focus.
For one all in one devices are always cheaper than getting separate devices (MacBook vs a display)
The studio display is larger, brighter (600 vs 500) and pushing more pixels (5k vs 3k)
The studio display isn't the new pro display. Hence why it doesn't have mini led.
8:13 lol, i see what you did there 😂😂
After 1 year of owning two of these displays, I have to say they are the best displays I ever owned. In our office I am the only one with this display, others all have an HP panorama display that‘s about as expensive. Funny thing: Whenever I‘m in my HomeOffice my colleagues use my Apple display instead of their larger HP. I don’t know wether it’s because of the higher resolution (despite being smaller) or the better colors or the uniform lighting without light speckles or the joy of using a display that doesn’t wiggle whenever you touch the table. A solid aluminum display with an excellent screen seems to be worth something.
But HP's panoramic display is, you know, a panoramic display, it's an ultra-wide monitor, and Apple's one is not. And if you really have problems with monitor stability, you can try using a desk/wall mount, it will cost less than $400 and will allow you a wider range of position adjustment.
@@randomrandom7208 Our whole office is full of panoramic HP displays. And still… my coworkers prefer to use my smaller display. And my desk ist standing in the middle of the room, no way to use a mount.
@@HalixCH I wasn't trying to convince you that a panoramic display is better, I was just pointing out that it's an expensive feature (even if you don't really need it), so a direct comparison isn't entirely fair. And yes, no matter how good the desktop mount is, it is not a solution for all cases.
Great video. It’s the build quality that makes it difficult for me to bother upgrading my display which is Apple’s LED Thunderbolt 27” display. That’s built the same way, all metal . . . built in speakers, camera, etc. Oh and I can remove the power cable. LOL
I don't even want to talk about how sad it is that Apple is ripping customers off just for simple features like an adjustable stand.
When you can get OLED monitors for less than half the base price, anyone would have to be mad to buy this.

As someone who owned an Apple Thunderbolt Display with an unremovable cable, it gives anxiety to know such an expensive display also has one. The cable on mine deteriorated over time for no reason to a point where the display would constantly lose signal. Had to throw it away since it was out of warranty and the amount Apple was asking to fix it could be used to buy a non-Apple display brand new.
LOOL and Apple wants to reduce e waste. 😂😂 They only do things that benefits them
My Thunderbolt Display is still in great condition. I look after my stuff.

For me, the 400$ stand convinced me to buy another monitor. Such a basic feature that's actually mandatory if you don't wanna develop health problems, should be included in the base version.
Buying another, I discovered other monitors look like shit on Apple unless you trick the computer to think it's an Apple display through software. Nice.
Exactly the reason why I am “stuck” with Apple monitor. You really can’t go with other monitors (except the one approved by Apple, and even then it’s not the same crisp).
How do you trick the computer?
I might have actually been interested if that stand was included, even though it sounds contradictory to say that I'd probably rather have an updated and improved iMac 27" anyway (which is non-adjustable, height-wise). And that's partly because the all-in-one system is something of a statement piece, a bit of furniture almost, but mainly because it just looks neater. On that note, I think it's horrible the way you can see cables with the Studio Display if it has been lifted-up a little; couldn't they have supplied some kind-of clip that goes into that slot, to force the cables to route through the gap as high-up as possible?
I've never heard of people having to get apple displays with the monitor.
I brought the 28 inch bezeless Samsung (no idea of the name) and it looks clean as fuck on my mac. It's worth noting that you can control screen brightness from your keyboard which is something most other non-mac monitors don't support. If you work in a bright environment during the day and then use the same screen at night it's nice to be able to tone down the display.
I'm thinking that's not a big deal. If you are doing color critical work then you may take extra steps to control the ambient light.

For that extra $400, I can buy a extremely superior arm mount with more actuation action...this whole monitor, even from a monitor buying stand-point, IS AN AWFUL DEAL.
Exactly...
You could literally buy an oled TV and mount it to a monitor arm for that kind of price
Yes you could-- but then you will not have a stand if you ever want to sell it or use it in a different way so they save on material and cost and you still pay the same. They should just make all the monitors cheaper and make a vesa style stand for 199 which is sold spectrum. Like the Eve spectrum
As someone who is currently in the market for a high resolution monitor (or two) to pair with a Macbook, this just makes no sense. I can't daisychain them. No high/variable refresh rate. No HDR. A pretty average brightness. No flexibility in the stand. A camera that's worse than my MacBook's.
Apple seems to have a REALLY big problem with continuity in their products at the moment. The Pro Display, Studio Display, and M1 IMac all have pretty much the same form factor, yet use three different stands, and three different power cables. They release a dedicated monitor that has a worse panel then the iPad , iPhone, and Macbook. It seems like they just roll a dice to decide what product they'll release each year, and with which features, with no thought to iteration and normal upgrade cycles.
The camera will apparently get fixed with a firmware update.
Maybe they will release a stand adapter that seems to be in line with Apple design philosophy
How is brightness average when everything he compared it to has lower nits? Wouldn’t that make this better than average, actually best in class? Btw I think this monitor is ridiculous, but that doesn’t change the fact what you said wasn’t accurate lol
how is 600nits average brightness? average is 350, maybe 400.
I agree with you. I really thought they had completely turned the corner with Mac design, but this screen being worse than my MacBook Pro's display is hugely disappointing. Here's hoping they will make a revision of it soon, but it took them so long for even this one to show up that I'm not optimistic about "soon." I suspect the real reason they didn't want to make it better is because then it will be pretty much an affordable version of their XDR display. And they really thought that adding an extra processor and nice speakers would make up for the price, but we don't care about any of that lol.
Thank you. I was on the fence about buying a Mac Studio and watched several "middle of the road" reviews. This was wholly accurate, backed with receipts. Sorry Apple - I'll wait.
