If I didn't already have the LG 5K I would definitely choose the Studio display. However, I don't think the Studio 5K is enough of an upgrade over my LG 5K to justify the purchase.
Right on! Not enough to update. I’ve heard that Apple might release a Pro version of the Studio Display which could potentially have Pro Motion with higher refresh rate and HDR. That one seems more of a justifiable upgrade over the LG 5K.
@@ChopsProduction Pro Motion is 120hz, and 5k 120hz is not possible with thunderbolt 4 (4k120hz is the maxium) Maybe apple can come up with a way to use 2 thunderbolt cables to connect a 5k120hz display.

I appreciate it. We really care and want to do the best job possible. We also like to have fun and have energy in our vids but it annoys some people lol.
@@MaxTechOfficial I don't mean to diminish the channel, but I personally think your older video style contained a nicer balance of energy and professionalism. It was right around the time when the first M1 systems were hitting the market.
6:55 The difference in "HDR" is only because UA-cam is allowing HDR tone mapping metadata for that Studio Display. Thats just browser related. Do a test that is browser independent....get real HDR material and play it with something like movist pro that can tone map and then compare. Im sure the new display is better but its not as far as the youtube video is showing.
Yes, I think a fairer comparison for native contrast would be playing the same SDR video on both monitors. In the comparison in this Max Tech video the LG Ultrafine looks weird because it isn't tone mapping.
You’ve been knocking it out of the park with all these videos and details you’re uncovering during a VERY exciting time for the Mac. From one Max to another, keep it up!
@@Alperic27 All very good points, but honestly when buying Apple computers, buy all the Apple accessories. You'll have less issues to worry about. Bad audio can be resolved by getting true external speakers. Just my opinion. Yes, Apple's stuff is very expensive, it's a money grab, no doubt about it, but Apple's technical support is excellent. What happens when that LG monitor stops working? LG support is horrible.
If the browser allows for HDR play back, then Mac OS is using apple EDR tone mapping. So you can consider this a HDR display for media consumption, it’s just not hitting the 1000 nits requirement for HDR content creation, so apple didn’t count this as a HDR display. And this should be better than most of those crappy HDR600 displays on the market.
When I watch HDR videos from UA-cam on my 2017 iMac I get the HDR version. I’m not sure why the operating system thinks my display is HDR capable because it’s obviously not. It doesn’t look very good.
Yea and worse than Mini led on 1 year old apple devices and oleds on budget phones. This ain't 2018 anymore, it costs so much and it's not even 120hz(budget phones do OLED 120hz lol). It's not even about gaming, it's about responsiveness and not getting ripped off for really cheap manufacturing.
This is completely wrong. EDR tone mapping doesn't make it a HDR display at all. Windows does tone mapping too, and with no dimming zones all that is happening is the color and brightness getting remapped to SDR format.
I liked the fact that you brought some light to this display despite the popular trend, but sadly I cant really agree on it being acceptable. One would expect some improvement from a display that came 6 years ago, but a similar pricetag to say the least. Although it does indeed have several improvements to the LG, theyre heavy dealbreakers like the non removable cable, or lack from a decent stand that can honestly turn a decent display into a shame of nowaday's displays. Youre paying way more than a display that came 6 years ago, and getting minor improvements with mayor dealbreakers.
I disagree. I think the Studio Display has a lot of features that distinguish it, if you're using an Apple computer. If your work relies on accurate colors, the Studio Display will pay itself back in no time. I don't have $1600 to spend on a display, so the Studio Display is out of the question. I am looking for a 5K display, so, naturally, I'm considering the LG Ultrafine 5K. However, I can't tand the wobbliness and subpar build quality. You may feel ripped off by the $1600 Studio Display, but I would feel ripped off by a $1000 display that's made out of plastic and wobbles like that. I think a $1000 display should have great build quality. Especially since it was released at $2500. $2500 for plastic that wobbles like that? That's a ripoff in my book. I'm a hard typer, and I also write a lot behind my desk. I've been using two LG UltraGear monitors for the last few years, and I absolutely hate the wobbling when I'm writing. I could, of course, invest in a sturdy Vesa mount that doesn't wobble, but that's expensive as well. Everyone values different things, so whether a price tag is worth it, depends on those things. We should accept that.
@@ThomasVanheldenjust buy a normal mount that bolts to your desk. It's ridiculous to have wobbling monitors when a perfectly sturdy arm can be bought for £50. Clamps and bolts are very basic technology. Also five years ago a 5k monitor was really extravagant because they had to invent it and create an entire new product. It's all about the screen. Now it's much cheaper. Very few companies make 5k monitors.
@@jambononi What you call "perfectly sturdy" wouldn't qualify as sturdy in my book. I've owned many monitors over the years, and I've always been annoyed by the wobble when I write and type. Granted, I'm a rough writer and typer. The Studio Display is the first display I've ever seen that doesn't wobble, even with my rough writing and typing. Even if you were to invest $300 in a premium monitor arm that genuinely doesn't wobble (even in my book), it would still look nowhere as elegant as the Studio Display Stand. It would ruin the entire aesthetic. Also, every time I would want to adjust it, I would have to mess with clamps and bolts. Ugh... I also move my display around quite often between my office/study and my living room table. I can't install an arm on my living room table, so I do need the display standard. I believe a discussion like this lies at the root of the difference between Apple and non-Apple consumers. I think Apple users care more about details and aestethics than non-Apple users do. To each their own, as far I'm concerned.
@@ThomasVanhelden I am an apple user. It just doesn't really make sense that you would opt for years to have something that wasn't functional at all for your use but then paint this picture of aesthetic and Apple users etc. But as long as you're happy now with the apple monitor. Didn't mean to get in your face about it or anything.
I use LG 5k. I totally agree on shaky stand even worse when I extend it. But other than that I’m satisfied with this over the years. I guess proper vesa mount will be better than stand comes with it
I'm pretty sure a better Audioengine stereo speaker and a Logitech StreamCam is cheaper than the difference between that and the Studio Display. Plus you don't get to be bogged down with Apple's stupid arbitrary limitations like non-interchangeable mount/stand and that stupid "non-removable" power cable. For the price and "pro" alignment, I expected much better from Apple.
Thanks for ur comprehensive reviews on the Studio and Studio display. Many of the other UA-camrs were lazy and delivered generic reviews. Will be interesting to see how Apples software updates will impact the performance of these 2 products. Looking forward to your updated reviews…
In 2004, I paid close to this price ($1300.00) for a 20 inch Cinema Display with a resolution of 1620 x 1024 & a built in hub with FireWire 400 & USB 2.0. This display offers so much more.
The build quality on the LG 5K display is very poor compared to studio display. Look up “LG 5K USB type c broken” and you’ll see that tons of people have their USB C port break within a year or 2 of purchase. Happened to me after 2 years. Studio display’s build quality and design is way superior than the LG
What am I missing at 8:02? The LG looks much better to me? The mountainside nearest is just black on the Studio but on the LG, I see some detail? For reference, I am watching this on a 27" 5K iMac 2019 model.
I can confirm everything he said. Have had the LG for the past couple years, and have now the Studio Display (without Nano Texture). Compared to the LG, it is less reflective, has a much nicer build, speakers are on another level (but still not good enough that you wouldn't want a nice pair of Audio Momitors). What really disappointed me is the integrated camera. I think the bad quality makes it unusable for anything but simple facetime calls to your friends. I'm professionally working from home, and I'm definitely setting up a better camera. Overall, for me it was worth the upgrade from the LG.
I read an article on The Verge regarding the Studio Display. They were able to disconnect the power cord from the back. It just needs a firm tug; it’s not magnetic.
I have the exact same thoughts as many others. There is just not enough of a difference to make the move from my existing 3 LG 5K monitors to the new Apple Display. The camera really needed to be so much better. I rarely use the internal speakers so that made no difference. And while the 600 nits brights is nicer, so far professional looking to use this monitor for color accurate grading are out of luck with this monitor. Just like the Apple Pro Monitors. It's a great monitor...just not a pro-level monitor.
@@eurihub If you wanted to, you could not use a chair or desk for an even more minimal set up. That doesn't make it a good idea. Just get some small, good stereo speakers that blend in with the rest of your setup and they will blow the socks off of either monitor.
@@AGuy-vq9qp Why not? I use my 27" iMac speakers and they sound better than any computer speakers I've ever owned. No need to clutter up my desk and spend more money on something that isn't necessary.
I really like the Studio Display.. kinda exactly what I asked for.. a more affordable HD monitor from them. BUT, the built in power cord, living with cats and dogs, makes me very nervous. I bet there's an aftermarket for kevlar braided cable covers for them lol.
Thank you!…finally someone did this review the correct way and compared the Studio Display directly against the LG UF 5k. Hey other reviewers, 4k is NOT a relevant option in macOS because the scaling creates visual artifacts. It’s shocking to me how many other reviewers have missed this point entirely. Well done!
Man, I want to invest in a monitor that will give me proper HDR, at this point. With the advent of Samsung's QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) panels and a lot more bright miniLED panels coming, yes the Studio Display is amazing in so many other ways but I don't think it will last more than 3 years at most on me before I start wanting the shiny new thing again, because of the lack of 'proper' HDR. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Check out the Alienware qdoled. It’s seems to be about as perfect of a monitor as you can get right now for less than the studio monitor. Linus has a video on it.
@@Elemonator meh it’s not very good. 250 typical brightness. Dated design with a chin. Curved and an ultrawide. It’s just a different set of compromises.

Nice Review! I liked how you went into many different aspects and showed now overall the Studio display is simply a superior product. What I would also note is one reason the images look so nice on this (and pretty much all Apple displays) is the work they put into calibration and custom drivers. Plus this thing even has an SOC (A13) in it for DSP and other such things.
All standard Mac Display stands are Vesa capable, all they require is a drill, and tap. I have altered imacs since 2005 to use vesa. And the still attached foot is handy for storing the keyboard or a drive up off the desk. The engineering skill level to achieve this is beginner. The only thing to know is that the aluminium Apple uses work hardens so, drill with confidence, not slowly. A backing piece of wood will help avoid shrapnel capture in the hinge. Mask tape the hinge just in case while your drilling and tapping. The cost of the mod is about $20 for the tap, and the cost of the drill and bit, both of which can of coarse can be used elsewhere for other projects. Best thing is the original Mac stand is still attached for non vesa use.
Nice video, easy to see how much better the Studio Display is. Build quality, image quality and twice the data rate on the ports. Easily worth the extra. Still wish the ports were all thunderbolt though.
@@MaxTechOfficial The Verge, Tom’s Hardware and many others tech articles referred to you last video Mac Studio teardown… As would Will.I.Am say, “ I hope you’re ready, Great Times Are Coming “ 😎😅
MaX, keep knocking out good videos. Hey, by the way, found out from trial and error that the studio display will work with a PC as well that has a USBC connection, but not Thunderbolt. With a USBC connection, you will be able to use the awesome speakers, camera without the Center stage feature and mic so everything works flawlessly. You will need to connect it to a Mac to adjust brightness and instal Firmware updates. When connecting it to a PC with Thunderbolt, you will only get a picture.
I did see better colors and sharpness in the Studio display, but I don’t know how well calibrated both of your monitors are. That being said, I don’t know if you bumped up the contrast levels of the Studio display on purpose for contrast comparison or if you lighting and angle of view didn’t do justice to it from the video, but although the Studio display certainly showed more contrast and sharpness, the details in the shadows and darker areas are way way better in the LG display, I am not talking about sharpness, I am talking about the amount of detail I could see in the shadows, the image in the LG display looked more natural, more neutral, flatter, which in my opinion is better if you want to do editing. But again, I don’t know if just the video didn’t do justice, your lighting condition and how calibrated your monitors are.
The thing about the Studio Display is that its value is great only when you compare the display to an LG UltraFine. There aren't really very many other displays to which it can be compared. Way more attention has been poured into 4K displays, and I do wish Apple would have released one with a high refresh rate and other features commonly seen on the variety of other 4K displays on the market. 5K panels are so seldom utilized, there really has not been a collective effort to bring them further; and it's easy enough for Apple to tout their new display because it's 5K and basically nothing else is. Doesn't matter if the panel is a several years old, when the display boasts a higher pixel density than most others on the market...
Great review! Better speakers, brighter, better microphones (the LG sounded tinny to me), better charging, better color (the LG looked like it had a yellow cast), better design. I started watching this assuming I’d leave with the impression the LG was a better buy, but I’d definitely pay up for the Studio Display.
You will always get better standalone speakers. If sound quality is so important, get dedicated speakers and an amplifier for them. The sound will be superior. It should all be about the display, connectivity to that display and budget.
Inflation is not a good way to compare technology. The tech industry develops fast that what cost $1000 5 years ago would cost cheaper if it is built today. Extreme example: watch "How bad is this $5000 PC from 10 years ago?". Display technology doesn't develop as fast as PC, but it's still fast.
The turnaround for these videos are nuts. You guys have to sit down for a podcast, I’d love to hear the work process (the hours and delegation) and how you come up with ideas for some of your tests that no other channel considers or does in depth but I always manage to find answers to my Apple related questions from you guys. Also shocked at the quality of the webcam difference, thought the software update Dave2D was talking about would fix the studio’s webcam.
Thanks! It was a long workday. 8am to 11pm with a 1hr30min break after that then then I came in 1am to 4am to shoot the benchmark video myself. Vadim and Angelika came in Saturday to edit the display and benchmark video. Tomorrows iPad video and breakdown was being edited by Angelika as vadim and I were shooting it.

Nice review, agree in most part except the sound. The Studio Display sounds completely dull compared to the Ultra Fine. I don't understand why the bass sound is so heavily overemphasized. The Apple sound reminds me of the CC Audio Tapes played with Dolby B which was noise cancellation but also dropped the higher frequencies completely.
Idk if you have a SD (Studio Display), but I do. The sound is night and day. The SD sound is amazing for what they are; full, rich sound that immerses you in the content your watching with the beautiful picture quality. I have the LG 5K, and while it’s okay, it does not even come close to comparing to the SD.
I agree with you. Clarity and loudness always is more important than bass. Boomy bass is just a crutch used to cover up weaknesses and generally makes music less "fun" to listen to.
@@Enidx10 How does the SD compare to the 27" iMac? I LOVE the sound on my 27" iMac and was hoping they wouldn't destroy the new monitor with dull, bass heavy sound.
@@77dris according to Apple, the SD sound system is the best in any Mac, period. I don’t have a 27” iMac to compare it to, but I’ve seen comparison videos and it seems that that is indeed the case, the SD sounds better
There is no BootCamp anymore so Studio Display is a bit problematic with connecting to a Windows PC, somewhat a deal breaker for people who need both OSs.
It’s all relative; in 2004 I paid close to that much ($1300.00) for a 20 inch aluminum Cinema Display, with a resolution of 1680 x 1024 & a built-in hub with FireWire 400 & USB 2.0. This display has a WHOLE lot more.
Well, not really. I'd say that they are about the same. You can't compare technology from even a decade ago and then say the newer tech "has more". Technology is constantly improving and as it does, prices should come down. The Apple Cinema Display you used to have would be the same grouping as this display so pricing should be similar and the new one should have better specs. It's like comparing a new Canon R5 to a Canon 5D original and saying the R5 should cost 2x more because it has a lot more. They are both the same model range (though the R5 does now cost 2x as much because of crazy inflation the past 5 years).
@@77dris Well, for 1 thing, it’s a larger display. The 23 inch was $2000.00 & the 30 inch was$3300.00; Apple worked with Nvidia just to make a graphics card for the 30 inch-it sold for $600.00, as a BTO option. So, yeah the tech constantly improves-which constantly lowers the price of development & I still think the new 27 inch is much more, than that 20 inch. Could this 27 inch exist had that 20 inch not come along before? Not as likely.
The 30 inch Cinema Display and even the 27 inch, later the Thunderbolt were game changers for the time. Especially the 30 inch display. Monitors in 2004 looked very different and 1440p resolution?! Crazy stuff. This ain’t the same
Appreciate the detailed comparison. This helped me making a buying decision and to also compare basic value of one device’s features and performance vs the other. Thanks.
I have the studio display connected to my 14" MacBook pro. While some people have complained that the studio display is only 60HZ, I really can't feel a difference between the 120HZ display on my macbook and the 60HZ panel on the studio display. I also have a PC with a 165HZ display. I still can't feel a difference in non-gaming tasks between the PC display and the Apple Display. In essence, HFR is not necessary for 99% of users on the studio display.
For those looking for a 27" 5K Mac-compatible display, it appears only Apple has one. Checked LG's website and the 5K that used to be there is not currently available. Maybe all 5K production is going to Apple and maybe LG will have a flimsy stand version sometime in the future but .... 5K is 5K, most of us love it and don't want to go backwards to 4K and Apple is the only one producing one. Dell's older 5K (they said they came out with a 5K first) is no longer available either. I believe Amazon still has a few LG Ultrafines but once they sell them they're gone.
Brightness doesn't effect the need for a matte coating. Dark mode, for example, becomes a mirror if you have bright lights or a window in front of the screen. Right? Is it worth $2300 when adding the matte coating along with height adjustable stand? What's the competition at that level?
Blackmagic Disk Speed Test for my Sandisk 2TB Ultra: LG 5k is 400MB/sec and MBP 16" is 830MB/sec. Which is why I would just plug it into the MBP if I am transferring huge amount of data. Don't need to buy a faster display, LOL. don't vibrate my desk when working, so the sturdy stand is totally wasted. HDR display just showed blacks going to very dark, so I actually preferred the non-HDR of the LG. And for reflectivity? I have a properly controlled environment so it's another "don't care" benefit, just like the metal back of the screen and the clever boxing. All in all, I rather spend the difference in price on any number of tech toys, but hey, that's just me.
So, plus for the LG, cost, replaceable cord, and I can do my hair without breaking out a mirror? Monitors are for pictures, and the studio display looks so much better, plus build quality. I just wished it used the mag safe cable though, for sure. As for upping brightness? No, it's got a better backlight, so better bright but also better regional dimming for better blacks. Very impressed, and really it costs about the same as a base 27" imac, and it's not a throw away screen, so a better buy. A base Air and this would make a great dockable workstation for light work. I have a high end air with 8core gpu and 16gb ram, so I'm going to see how that works for me for sure. Thanks for the video, great review and comparison!
Great video!! Personally I still feel this would be a better monitor minus the camera, mics and speakers A13 chip for $1100 or $1200. If we are going modular then just go modular. Instead you get speakers which are OK but most won't use over their current dedicated speakers, a webcam with a totally unnecessary Center Stage feature that is in my opinion is less useful in a desktop display and which most mac users probably already have an iPad for this feature. Of course the build quality is stellar and totally unmatched by any other display on the market but seems like Apple should just sell a 27" iMac and make a truly modular display that is more affordable for budget mac users (MacBook Air and Mac mini) customers and one that doesn't give Mac Studio customers a bunch of features they don't want and won't use. I've been dying for Apple to start making displays again. I broke down and got a 32" LG Ergo 4K for my M1 Mac mini and while the build quality isn't what I'd want, it does have a nice adjustable arm can rotate to portrait mode has pretty decent picture quality and cost me less than half of what this Apple Studio Display costs. I guess I'll wait for a version 2 of this monitor that is mini LED, 120hz promotion a better webcam experience and ... well don't care about the speakers I already have dedicated speakers. I feel this current version while nice is just too pricey by including the A13 and a mediocre webcam experience and spatial audio that most people will never use. It is too pricey for budget/entry level users and not premium enough in its feature set (while including uneeded/wanted) features for more Pro users. Still seems like Apple wanted to charge iMac 5K prices minus the mac inside, keyboard and mouse. Either make an all in one or make a modular display, I feel like this is a product that tries to straddle the fence and doesn't serve anyone optimally. I feel like Apple could have just stopped making the small screen iMac and just had the base model be 27" that had and M1 Pro option instead of giving us a 23.5" model which feels really small in 2021-2022. Don't get me wrong I love the M1 iMac, I got one for my son, but if Apple wanted to streamline the number of models it sells while still adding the Mac Studio to the lineup that would have been a better route to go. We will see how the full product lineup looks from a feature/price point once the transition to Apple silicon is complete but I just feel if you only want a single iMac model just make the bigger all in one and then make a truly modular option for Macbook/Mac mini/Mac Studio users.
The 2 most important devices on a computer are the man/machine interface, i.e. the MONITOR and the KEYBOARD/MOUSE/TABLET. You're rally way better off spending a bit more on these than on the latest CPU/GPU etc. ...and I NEVER use in-built loudspeaker. Instead I get a amp/dac and a external pair of stereo desktop speakers. Voilà: I do not just get only a workstation, I got a hifi device with great sound quality plus my own private cinema with a superb screen!
You guys are giving the internet a master class on how to review very hot/expensive products. Also providing us a clear/simple idea of them, so we can make a smart buying decision. Thanks PS.: waiting for a video on how Max put together the Mac Studio! Congrats!
Its a simple first impressions, not a review. He hasn't actually used this panel for more than a few hours, possible a couple days. Also he doesn't even go in depth to test the color accuracy or proper HDR content playback.
Do you remember how Apple said you could "order the Studio Display with the tilt stand and bring it to your local Apple store to install the height-adjustable adapter?" Well, forget it. I set up a Genius Bar appointment and then called just to be sure they had the part. I was told that (1) I must come into the store first, (2) the appointment is treated as a repair ??? and they could then order the part, and (3) when the part comes in, you schedule a visit again. What is really bad (in Seattle area) is that distribution doesn't even have the part!?!?! When I ordered the Studio display, the height-adjustable version (+$400) would take another 3-4 weeks and I didn't want to wait. Anyone else running into this?
Great video Max. Wonderful to see you guys topping 900K+ subscribers - you're on a roll to a cool million! The Studio Display looks pretty cool. Wondering how well it will hold up long term...as it appears to be using a similar panel to the one in the LG 5K display? How has your LG 5K held up? Mine started developing severe ghosting and banding after a few years : ( Seeing some reports of folks online with similar issues with their LG 5K + plus some 5K iMac owners too. Hesitant to push the order button if this could be an issue in the future...
pls compare to 4k to 5k, and explain whether for ordinary users who can get great LG Ultrafine 27" 4K display for around 350 bucks, is it worth getting 5k
I have a Dell 27" 4K monitor and it's pretty weak compared to my 27" iMac. The 27" iMac display has 2x more resolution (5K is twice 4K) and while that isn't a huge issue it is noticeable. But also, the colours and accuracy of the iMac is way better and more consistent. I went through 4 of the Dells (their best 4k panel) and all of them had issues with the colour temp not being uniform.
The display isn’t horribly overpriced, it’s just that way too many consumers feel like it’s a consumer-grade display. It’s really not. It’s a high-accuracy monitor *marketed* as a consumer-grade display. At the School of Vet Med, radiologists either got iMacs, LG 5Ks, or Asus ProArts because of their high contrast ratios, very high brightness, and very crisp resolutions. A few black vs white pixels can be the difference between a false negative diagnosis or not, for example. However, it’s in human nature to be used to whatever you use daily. I used to use a 144Hz 1440p panel with high contrast ratios daily because “it’s crisper, it’s smoother, it’s got better color accuracy,” etc., etc. that is true compared to what I daily drive now (1600p, 60Hz). However, it’s what I use more because both it and my computer are mobile now rather than stationary. So, I’m used to it and don’t miss the other monitor in the office. Contrast ratios are much horrible, but again, it’s what I’m used to now.
Wonderful video - you gig deep, I dig this !! - But where can we get your amazing wafer / silicon wallpaper ?? It's not in your adobe stock collection... Thanks for the excellent work !!
I enjoyed the videos boys, keep up the consistency. I'm really surprised how nice the Panel is having no local dimming, I think the difference in the comparison is that the Studio lets you use HDR meta data. Gonna clip details in dark but damn that is a huge difference, actually impactful though I'd recommend a OLED at these prices base on the display alone but the webcam, speakers, mics, all add up and it kinda makes sense why it cost more but I would like to see a version without all these extra stuff. I can see them switching this monitor to OLED in a few years because thats where the industry is heading with QD already brining the price lower than highend MiniLed
This is such a useful review! Thanks! So if it picks up UA-cam HDR, it will also be able to do Netflix’s Dolby Vision (which is gorgeous on my MBP)? (PS: the HDR on the ASD looked mostly like very dark darks, while the LG showed still some detail in the darks - but this is probably due to the video perhaps)
I can't wait for LG to release something new to blow the studio display away. The fact that a 6-year-old monitor is keeping up with the studio display is more impressive to me.
A small clarification - Apple reps have claimed this is a new panel. Other than the extra 100 nits who knows what else is different about it but that is the official line.
If I didn't already have the LG 5K I would definitely choose the Studio display. However, I don't think the Studio 5K is enough of an upgrade over my LG 5K to justify the purchase.

@@MaxTechOfficial I don't mean to diminish the channel, but I personally think your older video style contained a nicer balance of energy and professionalism. It was right around the time when the first M1 systems were hitting the market.
I agree as well. This is what a review is suppose be. Great review!👍🏾
Still, the conclusion that that display is woth 1600 bucks was silly as it's clearly not.
@@lawrenceandrews4367 Yes but you can still display HDR content and it can look better than non HDR content as long as the tone mapping is correct.
Yeah, it was strange that host didn't know that.

@@musicelect google apple EDR technology, you will understand the reason.
@@shinoMusic local dimming or the ability to display 0 nits true black is never the requirement for HDR.
Youre paying way more than a display that came 6 years ago, and getting minor improvements with mayor dealbreakers.
i agree
Unless you want a "clean apple look" the most partical thing is to get a good quality arm (Egotron or such).
Thanks for ur comprehensive reviews on the Studio and Studio display. Many of the other UA-camrs were lazy and delivered generic reviews. Will be interesting to see how Apples software updates will impact the performance of these 2 products. Looking forward to your updated reviews…
I’m hearing the bad camera quality on the display may be due to a software issue. I look forward to seeing how the camera looks after an update.
In 2004, I paid close to this price ($1300.00) for a 20 inch Cinema Display with a resolution of 1620 x 1024 & a built in hub with FireWire 400 & USB 2.0. This display offers so much more.

For 2004 that display was way above its time. Astonishing.

LG seems to have a aqua colour cast on the white Google screen. Needs to be calibrated I suspect
That’s what I noticed as well. I also noticed the Apple screen is set up darker. Couldn’t that be fixed to make them look even?

I don't know either of the two monitors. But if they don't provide an almost identical image, they are using the wrong profile or need calibration.

Same with me. I updated because of the unstable stand.

I read an article on The Verge regarding the Studio Display. They were able to disconnect the power cord from the back. It just needs a firm tug; it’s not magnetic.
Apparently Apple’s official support documentation states that the power cord is _not_ removable.
Power cable is actually removable but its not pretty and most likely voids warranty
Great comparison, Max! Am upgrading from the LG 5K UltraFine to the Studio Display.
This is the review I've been waiting for.

Congrats on content..its hard to standout when everyone reviewing the same things .. You only one thats diff .. Keep it up
I did see better colors and sharpness in the Studio display, but I don’t know how well calibrated both of your monitors are.
They were clearly not set up properly, or they would be more or less identical.
Exactly my thoughts. Disingenuous review really.

Been watching since you had over 100k subs. You're now close to a million!!
Yes, exactly my opinion.

Thanks for the video, Max. I found the studio display camera sharpness disappointing. Have a nice day.

I’m glad I just sold my LG 5K and went for the new Studio Display…

Use binaural for your sound tests - higher frequency spectrum microphones will give us more bass
The microphone is surprisingly good. I can’t really distinguish much between the mic on the screen or the mic you are using on your videos
And our mic costs $550 connected to a $350 recorder lol
I just got the LG used eBay love it great sharpness looks great.
Of course it's not.
The sound quality of Max studio display is so clear ! The camera and mic is also real good in it! 👍🏻
Camera is shit, just look at footage from new M1 macbooks.
Wow, that's a pretty significant difference in how the panels look. Thanks for that! And the LG webcam is quite decent!
Hold Up: The LG Ultrafine DOES have ambient light sensors for automatic brightness as a FYI
I think if it had all that taken away it should cost around $900
The 2 most important devices on a computer are the man/machine interface, i.e. the MONITOR and the KEYBOARD/MOUSE/TABLET.
You're rally way better off spending a bit more on these than on the latest CPU/GPU etc.
...and I NEVER use in-built loudspeaker. Instead I get a amp/dac and a external pair of stereo desktop speakers.
Voilà: I do not just get only a workstation, I got a hifi device with great sound quality plus my own private cinema with a superb screen!
the mac displays speaker are really good for normal works and even some proffesional music!
You guys are giving the internet a master class on how to review very hot/expensive products. Also providing us a clear/simple idea of them, so we can make a smart buying decision. Thanks
PS.: waiting for a video on how Max put together the Mac Studio!
Congrats!
Its a simple first impressions, not a review. He hasn't actually used this panel for more than a few hours, possible a couple days.
Also he doesn't even go in depth to test the color accuracy or proper HDR content playback.
@@Smile.911 If you recognize it is a simple first impression so why made the criticism of what is lacking?
As a ultrawide monitor user, I find it hard to move back to 16:9 scaled monitors unless it's at least 32" in size.
Which monitor do you use?
@@KhanJoltrane LG 38" at work & 34" at home
32" is the minimum nowdays. 27" display, especially at that price that is rather ridiculous choice.
@@dexio85 very niche lmao, 27 is way more than enough for most people. I don’t think I’ve seen many monitors in offices bigger than 24 still lol
Mine started developing severe ghosting and banding after a few years : (
Seeing some reports of folks online with similar issues with their LG 5K + plus some 5K iMac owners too. Hesitant to push the order button if this could be an issue in the future...
pls compare to 4k to 5k, and explain whether for ordinary users who can get great LG Ultrafine 27" 4K display for around 350 bucks, is it worth getting 5k
no its not worth getting 5k, at 27" the difference is not that noticeable.
Great comparison video, this really helps a person to be able to make a good choice (imho) between these two monitors.
Details, details, details as always!
Can you compare apple's studio display vs Alienware QD-OLED display
He won't :)
@@dexio85 but why :(
Great Video. Look forward to getting one !
Omg i thought at first it was going to be a hard choice… after your video it all makes sense! Wonderful video!
agree totally worth it!
What is the giveaway max?
I can't wait to see the Studio Display vs the 2020 27" iMac, I bet they are different.
Thanks for being on top of things! You are my new favourite Apple channel! 😀
Apple’s display will also have a better resale value. So it’s worth to spend the extra money over the LG.
Liking the content man. I really enjoy your reviews.
LG even packs an expensive OLED monitor in a plastic housing. That tells me enough.
A small clarification - Apple reps have claimed this is a new panel. Other than the extra 100 nits who knows what else is different about it but that is the official line.
