VERY helpful video! People new to skating keep asking me what they're doing wrong, and all I say is, "bend your knees." This is a much more thorough explanation of "bending one's knees." Thank you!
Thank you so much for this Coach. Much appreciated. I’m going to skate tomorrow and looking forward to implementing everything you taught us in this video. Once again. Thank you.
Omgosh so excited to find this video. I am doing Adult Basic level 4. I am 57 and have to build slowly, this is perfect to help build strength and flexibility. Can't wait to try on the ice.
Do you warmup before you skate? A good warmup should help this issue. It could be a few things and I’m not a doctor but common issues that cause this are lifting the toes after each push causing the tibialis to work harder (that’s the shin muscle) it gets like a repetitive strain fatigue from being used. Or it can also be shin splints. A warmup for this muscle would be to walk on your heels (in shoes) before you put your boots on or even do some toe raises. Standing flat footed lift your toes off the floor in reps of between 10-15 once or twice depending on how they feel. If you’re still growing this can also be a cause of pain on the muscles as sometimes muscles don’t grow as fast as the bones… they will catch up 😀 I think a good warmup will do the trick!
Hello, I’m an older guy learning to skate and play hockey. I notice when I try to get good knee bend, my knees fall inwards. So my skates are shoulder width apart but my knees are still under my head a bit. Is there anything I can do to correct this problem? Thank you in advance.
It could be your feet pronating, that’s often corrected with orthotic insoles, it can also be that the blade is positioned off centre on the boot therefore encouraging the weight to your inside edges, re-aligning the blade foxes this (not common but something worth checking!) if you only had this issue in skates and not in shoes it’s either the boot or the way you bend. It can be ingrained from childhood how you bend, it takes a lot of patience to change the habit but sometimes I need to ask skaters to think about their knee bending over their little toe. Look too down as you bed and see where your knee naturally moves to…
Tricky to answer as it depends what level and what discipline you are doing? Arguably the best blades are the titanium or alloy blades that are super light weight, there’s also been some new innovations in the size and shape of the blade to assist cleaner turns and deeper edges for dancers.
@iskatecoach Thank you. I really like your videos. I'm an adult skater. I can't jump anymore due to a knee issue (that originates in the glute) so I'm learning to ice dance. This topic is very important to me. I like skating instruction videos with no music, it allows me to focus fully on what's being taught.
This is what i want! I was looking for tips for bending my stiff knees. Thank you so much ❤
Great tips! I always scratch my toe picks going backward, and I’d definitely try this next time in ice!
Glad it was helpful!

Hi coach, I am a beginner skater and it seems that I always get shin pain while i skate, within 10 minutes. What do you think is the issue?

Hello i have a question. What kinde of blade is excellent for figure skate?the best in the world.thank you

Not me using the plastics rentals 🤒
Easy to bend, as not much support in them!?
I want to watch this but can't - the music is a major distraction.
Noted 👍🏼 sometimes the videos are so flat without music but I’ll be aware of the levels on the future, thanks for your honest feedback.

I love ice dance too, I have lots to share for dance, what dances are you working on??
You’re brilliant!! But. Who ever filmed you. Get someone else. Very annoying shaky video.
Yeh this was filmed without my gimbal as the battery died that day 😬
Thank you so much for your tips!!!! great channel!!! Thank you thank you thank you
