    already downloaded the app, it looks really good and is easy to use! 👍 one question: you have so many Axel videos and in the App it says that a course is coming...are you going to delete the youtube videos then? or only move them to the app/restructure? because some videos are short and really helpful, so I dont want them to get lost, I learnt so much!!!

    • @iskatecoach
      @iskatecoach 11 днів тому

      Hey thanks for the app download! Anything on UA-cam will stay 👍🏼 the axel course is coming soon! It will be on ice drills (last count I had was about 30 different drills!) and they will all address different parts of axel. It will be coupled with off ice exercises and teachings and can include a video analysis service alongside so I can check your progress and suggest which drills you need 👍🏼

    Does it count as a combo change foot spin if the scratch spin leg doesn't cross down in front? (just next to spinning leg)

    • @iskatecoach
      @iskatecoach 11 днів тому

      Yes well technically it’s not a ch age of position so therefore not a true combo spin. The free leg placement is optional it’s still an upright. It’s just good practice to have the free leg crossed to get the weight over the axis 👍🏼

    Does backward stroke have more tips besides all these mentioned in this video? I struggle more to pick up speed while skating backward. Thanks.

    • @iskatecoach
      @iskatecoach 17 днів тому

      Yes, well tell me more is it when crossing or when just pushing like backward strokes? I find it takes a bit of time to get comfortable with leaning in the direction of travel, your body weight should be very slightly ahead of your skates. Pre bend or “charging” as I call it is the key!

    • @1yjshu
      @1yjshu 15 днів тому

      @@iskatecoach I meant at just pushing/backward strokes. I did lean too much forward instead of leading with my shoulders. I also feel awkward to lift the foot through/swing forward after the stroking. Thanks.

    • @iskatecoach
      @iskatecoach 15 днів тому

      Yes turning the foot in to get more of your edge involved in the push will help. As will a zig zag pattern in the stroke so you can push side to side more. Balancing with the free leg forward on one foot will also help you get comfortable 👍🏼

  • @KayceeEnerva
    @KayceeEnerva 17 днів тому

    Any tips to avoid leaning forwards

    • @iskatecoach
      @iskatecoach 17 днів тому

      Yes try to think about pushing through your hips when forwards and when backwards think about pushing through your shoulders a little more than your hips. Engaging your core is key to stopping what a call diving into pushes. Sometimes I put a glove on my skaters heads to see if they can push without moving their head, you could try this too 👍🏼

    I was trying these today and our coach said to pivot your hips and they often reference our hips but i find that hard to figure out (like my hips are telling me they don't do any of those things lol) so i just stood up on the carpet and tried the entry but putting my free leg forward as you say near the start of this clip and i felt like...yup that is probably pivoting my hips but its easier for me to understand what to actually do with my body. Only discovered your channel tonight so havent tried any thing on the ice yet but i like how you focus on one thing that you can do and straight away know if you are doing it or not, (ie my leg is either on front of me or it isnt). It was tips like this when I was learning to ski which i found really helpful, more than an instructor telling me to turn my hips this way, knees that way and look straight forward. I think for me anyway, what works best is a coach telling me one thing that I need to do to improve technique, and one thing that is easy to see for myself if i am doing it or not, ie putting a leg forward. I think putting the leg forward is causing my hips to pivot as my coach was saying today, but for me it is easier to understand what I need to try and make my body do lol. I think thats probably the magic to anyone teaching anything though, is to figure out the best ways to make something that may have numerous components to it, simple into one thing that has a side effect of causing your body to do most of the other things. Or simply focusing on the thing that makes the biggest difference, so that people can get started on actually doing the manoeuvre, then from there it Is easier to work on any other things to improve it, as long as you have the main bit. For me in skiing i had instructors tell me to put my hips here, my toes there, and at the same time my shoulders somewhere else and my knees somewhere else then look somewhere else and i was like wtf! I cant concentrate on my hips, knees shoulders and eyes all at once. Like i needed to learn some things wherre i just had to do one thing which would as a consequence, bring all the other bits of me into line lol. And i found ayoutube video by two us or canadian ski champs. Body something and not sure the other guys name, and the only two things they talked about for improving intermediate turns, was 1. Using poles taps to turn (i think because it helps turn your body at the right place?) and to always be able to feel the front of my leg pushing against the front of my ski boot if i was leaning forward enough. 10 years later I cant tell you how many falls just doing that has saved me from, and how many times after not skiing for a while and getting on ice steep terrain, just calming my mind, and thinking "poles" and "leaning forward till i can feel the front of my boots pressing my leg", has gotten me through. Im no expert and never will be, just blacks on a nice soft snow day and blues or reds otherwise, but what skiing ability i do have i put almost 100% down to those two simple things. Easy to remember and you are either doing them or you aren't. There is no question as to whether my poles are touching the ground or as to whether i can feel the front of my boot cos im leaning forward. These are the sorts of techniques I want to learn when (re) learning to ice skate in middle age after doing it in my teens and early 20s

      Hi Kim that’s so true, simplifying terms is something I try to do often, even turning sentences into single words as prompts and using language to say things the right way. I’m very conscious of it when I teach so thank you for your kind words and I hope my channel hopes you further 👍🏼

      @@iskatecoach I think his injury is minor. He got it two weeks ago, and now he seemed walking as normal, though he said that he felt dull pain. I saw the hope of his recovery soon. Can he skate again as in the past? I also heard of another woman. Her injury was more serious. She practiced waltz jump and had got injury along her shin up to knee. She had stayed crutch-bound for half a year. Later I saw that she jumped as normal like healthy person. ..

    That's a bad impression of first-time skaters. First, you need to wear those tan colored leather rentals without any padding, at least three sizes too large. Next stand on your inside edges so deep you're practically walking on the boots. Finally, don't slip the feet forwards and backwards, just take three marching steps forward and then trip on the toepick and face-plant.

      @wlchan7211 Місяць тому

      Will the posture "stand on your inside edges so deep" not cause ankle sprain? Even gliding on edges so deep may also cause ankle sprains, ? If ankle sprains occur, will it affect ice skating training after recovery?

    • @rickr530
      @rickr530 29 днів тому

      @@wlchan7211 I'm not sure if my comment went over your head or if yours is going over mine. Just to clarify, I'm not recommending how to skate, I'm describing the first-time skater behavior I witness every week during public skate. I do see at least one person each time just about walking on the inside edges of his boots, partly because the rental skates have a support level of 0 to 3 depending on how tight you get the laces, and partly because the size is way off. No ankle sprains in sight, though, just loose and floppy boots.

      @iskatecoach Місяць тому

      Yes they have recently included it which I’m very happy about 👍🏼 although only inside to inside and outside to outside, the opposing edges I would teach at the same time and probably again as a more developed skill later as when a skater adds speed and flow they often need reminding of the skill. Prepping the push and not ‘diving’ forward, or loosing a nice close foot position for the step 👍🏼
