Learn to Ice Skate: Skill Progression and What to Learn Next!

  • A month or so ago, I got asked by one of my subscribers: "Marcel, you have all of these great tutorials on how to learn a specific ice skating skill, but how do I know what is the next skill that I should be learning?"
That really got me thinking about bringing out a video about a skating skill progression, and this video is the result.
While you will still improve if you haphazardly work on various skills every time you hit the ice, you will progress much faster if you focus on a specific skill each session instead. And even though everyone learns a lit bit differently, knowing which skill is a good bet to learn for your next progression will also help you build a solid foundation of skating skills, rather than jumping about to skills that you may not be quite ready for, and end up being frustrating instead of progressive!

    What to learn:
    1) Skate forward
    2) turn- upper body leads direction
    3) bend more+front foot leads
    4) choose specific skill and practice
    5) hockey stop, then crossover
    6) skating backwards
    7) turn from backwards to forwards
    8) advanced: tight turns, hip openers, one leged
    Important:
-focus on one skill at a time
-have grip in the ice so you trust the ice more
-practice and repeat, also off the ice works

Danke Marcel! Mach weiter so!

Marcel, thank you so much for this video and all of your videos. I really love your focus on progressions and specific practice when it comes to skill building and teaching. Not only is it making my 7 year old Gideon better but I’m improving too and passing those skills onto him, plus I feel like I’m learning how to speak German as well! Loved, subscribed and dedicated student from USA MI in the Marcel School of Hockey👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸. Please keep up the OUTSTANDING work!

Thank you very much 💚 for me as an intermediate/pro it's again a good possibility to go into more details. When I started I wish I could learn from you as well.
In my experiences it was always a real accelator to have a group of friends so in love with ice skating as I was. So having fun and play some catching games is really helpful because it's more intuition and loose more anxietys. For me it was always a little challenge to "be cool" and try all the things the others wanted to do and I spent so many hours and days on ice I learned so much out of it. Today with ice freestyle skating the same thing... There are always people better than you and those random situations driving fast and have to make fast decisions is a great exercise even for mental health. Ice skating has so many different factors that you can use for your whole life. That's why I still love it after 2 decades of driving. I wish I learned ice hockey too but I was just in public places and have done my best. For sure I learned throught friends that played ice hockey and they learned from me the freestyle stuff and yeah... Fun is the most important thing and not thinking to much. I love your videos so much. Your awesome man 💚 thank you so much 💚
