Is actually suggest finding somewhere quiet and practicing falling as suggested. It will quickly teach you that it doesn't have to be bad or painful. It's like when learning to juggle it's a good idea to deliberately throw the ball up and let it hit the floor. Do that whenever you get really frustrated and it will remind you that it isn't bad at all.

I'm 42 and have recently started learning to skate for the first time. What stopped me from learning before was not wanting to fall, hurt myself, and look stupid/be laughed at. What changed is:
    1. I stopped caring what other people think so much (this may be age related!)
    2. My 4yo son started going skating with my wife, who is an excellent figure skater, and I wanted us to go as a family
So far I've been just three times, but am enjoying myself and didn't fall today :) I watched a fair few tutorials and this is the best I've seen! Thanks Julia

I started just this weekend, I'm 29 so kinda late to the game? But hey enough patience and I'm sure we going to be flying round soon.
I fell flat on my butt in front of everyone, it didn't hurt close to what I thought it might, and no one acted like I was a fool.
Keep it up man, never to old to start something new!! Goodluck! 👍

Theres one difference that some people don't know about ice skating and roller balading\skating, it's that in roller skating you push with your toes and in ice skating you push with your inner parts of your feet.

At 42, I got an opportunity to join an ice skating class in St. Louis as we don't have a rink back in the country where I live. With Google, nothing is secret anymore and the reason for this comment is somehow through their algorithm they featured this video in my list as a surprise.
Glad to learn from you coach. I enjoyed every bit of your session. I'll try these in my next session. You were clear, crisp, and slow in coaching that made me clearly understand the lesson. Summarising at the end was the cherry on the cake. Thank you so much for your free online lesson!

I’m in my mid-20’s and I’m fairly active/healthy because I cross train with a lot of different activites and exercises but I’ve struggled with skating so much. Makes me scared like no other thing has before haha! Falling and the speed scare me. But my goal this year is to go to some public skate sessions and learn to be less fearful on the ice and do some self-teach UA-cam lessons. Then, when I find time, take some adult beginner skating lessons at my local rink! Excited to watch more of your videos ❤

Among other channel who teach about skating, you are the best.
You explain the basic concept clearly that people could easily understand. And those concept (Forward Swizzle, Forward Stroking, Backward Swizzle, etc, I just watched your other videos too) are so complete that beginner could remember.
    All is perfect.
    😅
    But,
    I couldn't follow your tutorial.
I could only move forward a little and know how to stand up after fall.
It quite easy to get momentum and keep stabilize, using your suggestion, magic table. Hehe.
I try it and it work.
It might get people attention because I keep my hand in front of me like you do.
    🤭
But I am struggling to stand up with only 1 foot.
It seems like I couldn't make a pivot on my shoes, it kind of lean left or right, even if I tie it up tightly
And also, I failed to perform dip shape. It seems like the shoes too high and prevent me to lean my foot in order to do dip.
    😭

Hey Coach Julia! I am so glad I found this video after a random search. Today was my 3 year old daughter's and my first attempt at skating, The did this in a neighborhood canal by the lake so basically not in the usual controlled rink environment. Your tips where very helpful. I did fall 2 times however I managed and will go again tomorrow till I get it right. Send more tips for when skating outdoors. The out doors is what we have due to COVID all centers are closed.

I am so glad you found my video helpful! I would love to make a video about skating outdoors or skating on 'natural' ice, but unfortunately, living in sunny california, in a valley, I have never skated on natural ice! I had a chance once in Montana but I chickened out. I do hope to find another opportunity to experience that.

You included some helpful information on falling safely and getting up. Everyone talks about keeping your hands off the ice and not getting them run over. I don't know how often it happens, but I've heard of a few cases and it's bad. Of course, especially as you get more daring, you can't always control the direction of falls.

Yeah, I have seen a few nasty cuts at the rink, so Safety First! 🙂

I just became 12, and i live in Brazil. I always wanted to try ice skating, so first im practicing with my rollerblades about the basics of the basics. How to walk on it, do simple turns, you know, the basic. It might be really different when i finally try out skating on ICE, but im really passionate about this. I'll start doing ballet to be more flexible, improve ln my skating skills, then look for an opportunity to skate on ice, if there even is something like that here on Brazil lol. I loved your video and your tips, they were extra helpful!❤
