Making friends: Try not to make friends but join groups with activities that you enjoy. Over time you will find friends there. That is really hard in time of Corona though.

Exactly, there are interesting clubs (Fablab, RC Club, etc.) or activities (sports, dancing,...) Where it's easy to meet freinds.
Cannot be overemphasized: Learn the language! People I know from SA/Botswana think they will be fine because of English - complete misconception. Other than that: Feel welcome and make yourself a home.

Lovely video! Wonderful to hear another perspective of an international living in Germany. I loved the tip you gave about instead of focusing on finding friends focus on finding belonging. I am going to try this. Ive been here 12 years and am struggling in the social aspect. I agree with you that living in Germany is wonderful offering many new cultural experiences to learn and enjoy. Maybe its to late now, but when your employer tells you, that you loose your job, he has (by law!) the duty to tell you that you have to contact the "Agentur für Arbeit" as soon as possible (you have max. 2 weeks, otherwise you loose money!) and also he must give you the time to contact the "Agentur für Arbeit" personally!.
Never too late, someone else will benefit from this comment. Thank you.
Just to make it clear: the primary task of the employment agency ("Agentur für Arbeit" or online: www.arbeitsagentur.de ) is to (try to) keep you employed and find you a new employment. For that reason you have to register as jobseeker as soon as you are informed about the termination of your job, usually within 3 days ! The only exception is, when your contract ends in more than 3 months, then you must register as jobseeker 3 month before the end. Attention: this also applies vor fixed-term contracts. So it might be possible you have to inform the employment agency just one day before you start your 3-month job.
I was born in South Africa but grew up in Germany and I’m really missing Germany right now 😭😭

I would actually suggest watching movies and series that you know in German, without subtitles. Subtitles are a crutch. Sure, it's harder, but you'll be surprised how much quicker you start to pick up things.
Plus there are no subtitles in the real world, meaning it's fantastic for those listening skills.
True, this can also work for others.
maybe alternatively use german subtitles so you hear the word and can read it at the same time. Also, might be good idea to watch movies first you already know
@@fetB real life doesn't have subtitles, meaning listening might not be as strong. Plus German subs and dubs do not match as one is a translation of what is said, and the other is adjusted to match the mouths. So won't really help.
But definitely watch content you already know.
@@spongen984 well, if the subs are translated, they are virtually useless anyway. I'm talking accurate sub aka those for hearing impaired.
But to the point, im agreeing with you that watching with native subs is a crutch because you end up only reading your native language, whereas if you use proper subs in the foreign language, you got a back up and the spelling of words, which could immediately eliminate confusion.
For example, lets say a word is mumbled or sounds similar to your native language, you're more prone to associate it with the native word even though its spelled completely different and doesn't have the same mean, you know. Sometimes reading is better and sometime hearing, and if real life had subtitles, the option of a written reference while hearing/speaking, surely would help. Ultimately, to conquer a language its about actually understanding; how it is formed and the spelling is a big part of it.
I mean, take the english "there, they're and their" which sound virtually the same and as a new learner, you might think they are the same word, but within writing, you can understand that they are actually very different.
@@fetB no I mean in Germany those are different too. Subs and dubs are never the same, not even for hearing impaired. Which is distracting and makes it confusing.
I found German spelling to be very consistent with pronunciation, but I am lucky to live in a dialect-free state in Germany. But this is how I learnt German. Moved here and then complete 100% immersion.
Learnt very quickly, and today I have citizenship. (German is pretty much the only language I speak now) But, each person is different. Was just sharing my experience on what worked best for me. Maybe there's someone else who can get help from it.

Nice video. I do so much agree with the customer service in Germany. Maybe we should 'revolutionize' customer service? I just don't know exactly how to do it. I have lived in the USA for so many years now that I am more and more aware of these customer service challenges in Germany.

i have watched several of your videos and please, keep you open mind and your positiveness.
If you are emploeyed in germany and the company is shutting down or you just get fired, the company is forced by law to inform you that you have to go to the Agentur für Arbeit immediatly.
And it has to be written in the dismissal. If they dont, the "Arbeitsamt" should pay your fees from the first day and tries to get the money from your former employer.

The Agentur für Arbeit (unemployment agency) has also the biggest list of vacancies in Germany and you can enter your profile as well, all without any fee.
It’s odd that your company didn’t give you that info about collecting unemployment. In the U.S. it’s typical for a company whether they close or lay-off their employees that they give you a severance package and their HR dept usually gives you info that directs you to how each state handless unemployment claims too. Germany must handle these things differently. Oh well, this is another reason for ppl leaving their country to live elsewhere in the world should do their research on employment, health benefits, etc. I hope you’ll find another gig soon but for now keep giving us good content.

It is a must for German companys to inform you, that you should go to the Agentur für Arbeit as soon as possible to ask for money (Maybe the information is only one sentence.) By the way, it is something, all "older" Germans know anyway and it is the same procedere everywhere in Germany. It is something, parents tell their children ....... I am sorry, half a year is very hard.

C1 😨 I watched an english C1 video on yt. It was so difficult. I knew one or two of the vocabularies. My grammar is even worse but I think that isn't a topic at all in C1 I guess.
The Agentur für Arbeit is part of the unemployment insurance you (and your employer) have to pay from your salary. I'm surprised you didn't ask about the stuff written in your pay check.

4 what is the congress about? I answered
Then she asked about my budget for purchasing some of the products... I answered, No as it was stated in my application but she was going back and forth with me, I stood by my words and she later said something that I couldn't get so I asked her to COME AGAIN and she said IS FINE without saying anything again, she scanned my Documents and gave my receipt to me
Please is that a RED FLAG?

Yup if it’s one thing I know about living in Germany for 10 years & being married to a German woman there are SO many rules, even when it comes to crossing the road, very early in the morning, nothing moving anywhere but people still wait for the green walk light. It’s crazy to anyone from anywhere else just look at German people thinking that they do as they are told by their government, they never question anything, they just accept rules are rules. If people see you doing something very minor which might be against the rules random people will come up to you in a very unfriendly manner & TELL you to stop. Don’t get me wrong, there are good & bad things but the population certainly follow the HUGE amount of rules without thinking about freedoms plus the documents/paperwork you have to do for everything is crazy. There are a lot of people who work their entire lives in an Ampt which is a government department & there are many of them. Trust me.

@@tebogop8818 yup, that’s why I was so glad to get back to England. Where things take a much more common sense approach & people don’t seem to think they can act like police & tell you what to do. The service, in shops or wherever was very unhelpful & I felt it was at times unfriendly. As soon as they knew you where not German there where issues. Also for some reason they seem to think they are better than everyone else. Of course I’m only talking in very broad opinions & the individual person can be very polite, helpful etc but as an overall experience they can be very arrogant. I actually liked Germany but as you can see from what I’ve written it certainly does have its issues & they are mostly with the attitude of the general population towards others & that they all seem to be brainwashed.
I don’t have the audio option for German on Netflix and I’ve changed my whole device setting to German but still on Netflix it’s English?

Hi, about the rule u mentioned it’s normal, it applies almost every civilised world which is a good thing. Other wise it created chaos!
The other thing is customer service, it depends where and what kind of environment you are in again it applies other part of the world too! As a flight attendant I have been many part of the world. Yes I’m agree with u in some of the things u mentioned about in Germany! Customer service in Zara LOL… let me tell u my experience here in Frankfurt. I went to a fitting room with couple of clothes. When I return it back to the guy who stand at the fitting room door,he said to me can you fold it? I said to him that’s your job not mine, if I do your job why they employed u then,can u tell pls? Also can u show me a description which says that customer needs to fold after returning from fitting room pls.The guy face become totally red, i think it’s his first time someone told him with the straight face ,he became silent then I walk out!!!

Which account do you use to send money to South Africa and how is it in tax?
1. Wow, interesting that we are both in Bayern but you had different rules. I had to do an eye test and a 1st AID course and we both those I could go to the Zulassungstelle (traffic Dept) and also had a German license in 2 weeks. 2. regardless of your C1, you have less chances of finding a job if you don't have a rare skills. Germans do right by their people first and don't really employ foreigners for jobs that millions of their people can do like marketing, but if you have rare technical skills it's another ball game. This is ofcause different from province to province. You have more internationally focused provinces like Berlin & Humburg, there you could even work with no knowledge of the language. 3. There are 2 African licenses recognised in Germany, namely Namibia and South Africa.

Living in Germany is not easy. If you want to move here, you should first inform yourself properly. Reasons that speak against it I list times. Of course, there are also positive reasons but I rather list points that make you think.
1. The unfair tax policy. The system is designed for the really rich and big industrialists. To
comparison Switzerland or Holland are tax many times better. If you consider that Germany belongs to the 3rd - 4th largest industrialized countries but the median net salary is about 1800-1950 euros. You don't have to be the best in math to see that there is an extreme imbalance.
2. the high additional costs which exceed in large cities over 50-70 per cent of the net salary.
3. a general conservative mood in the population and in the media.
4. generally conservative parties that govern Germany and corruption in Germany is hardly
punishable in Germany. Whereas in other countries such actors end up in prison. See various studies on corruption in Germany.
Nevertheless, form your own picture and try to understand the points.

How long are you in Germany? I agree with you, probably very different from person to a person person. Some people live in Germany very long but in their heart they are Anti-German even if they don't say it openly they never feel it home. You know better than I do.
I love Germany even I don't live there, I like to hear people from other skin color sayings I feel at home their, I love the German language, I love the German culture, I'm blessed in Germany, and I want that the Germans saying we from Africa are good for Germany, that both sides can say I don't mind that our children and their children are best friends. 👍🏿👍👍🏾

It’s not as safe as Germany and it’s not advised to walk alone in the night regardless of your skin colour. You can walk anywhere but just be cautious and you’ll be fine.

Great issue! I fully agree that it needs an explanation. I got complaints from friends from Central and South America as well. The observation is true but often comes as a prejudice. The clue:
Everyday conversation in Germany is efficient, straight and honest.
Don't greet a German the English way with "How do you do!" or "How are you?" unless you are really interested in the persons health and current feelings! Greeting with a casual "How are you?", unless the person is a close friend, may cause some embarrassement, like entering into one's comfort zone. Be warned that if the person is very polite, you may get a complete answer to your literal question - to your own embarrassement - together with an explanation, about health issues or bad mood.
In Germany, the perfect customer service is competent and quick, so as not to waste the customer's time. Just perfect business, with the best intention and far from being rude.
This applies to phonecalls for an enquiry or an appointment, but also to shops, public transport etc. No initial small talk and come right to the point.
To visitors from many other countries this style may feel cold and unfriendly. But that's the way and don't take it personally!
